Help Needed
Leniency on whose part. All I'm saying is that some places do it by the book and don't play copied discs. Not so long ago my sister in law asked me for Luther Vandross "Dance with my father" for a funeral and the Vicar sent her away to get a legit copy when she gave him the copied disc. It's not me that makes the rules so don't come back at me like that. It's just a word of warning of what could happen.

Help Needed
Hi Nev, Just a word of warning. Check with the Vicar if it's OK on a copied disc. I've had more than one occasion where music supplied for weddings, funerals etc had to be on a legit release. (PRS and all that). Steve

Bobby Valentin
Another recent post on here spurred me to write this and ask the question: Has anyone been offered, bought or found at a venue, a copy of Bobby Valentin - Use it before you lose it on Fania over the last few months. I put it up for sale in the Sales section the other week and had a buyer. When I went to find the record to scan and post on, it had disappeared from my box. The last time I had it was in August when I copied it for my radio show. I have since DJ'd at the Skeggy weekender in September and Prestatyn in October and, although I didn't play it, it would have been in my box. If anybody has any information or can shed some light on the missing 45 (there may be others too as I don't look in the boxes very often) then please PM me. There may even be a small reward. Thanks in advance for your co-operation.

Frankie Karl: Rarest Label?
A respected collector is looking to replace his copy and has been quoted £750 by a certain dealer in Northern regions... without naming names of course

Frankie Karl: Rarest Label?
Kev had quite a few things. Most of my stuff came from John as I only lived down the road from him and nearly always got the pick of whatever was new in stock. Marisa, his wife would always say "Here's George Michael" when I pulled up. Had hair back then, stupid hair at that!!! Anyway, think my copy came from Jim Wensiora in the late seventies which all fits in with the stats so far. I'm still eager to know which was the first release though (or rather design) as there seem to be more and more differences of opinion surfacing. Thanks for all the info so far chaps

Frankie Karl: Rarest Label?
Nice one "64"... Must admit though that the whole reason I put the scan up was because I've only seen a couple of "reds" but with a different design to this one. Probably need to ask Andy Dyson if his is identical. Cooooeeee... Mr Dyson, over to you

Frankie Karl: Rarest Label?
Glad you said that Andy. Always thought it was the rarer of the bunch. Was thinking about selling but now I'm in two minds.

Bobby Valentin
Obviously this has come into vogue and fetched a fair chunk on the recent Manship auction. Got an absolute gem of a copy with no marks on vinyl or label, no writing etc etc just as it was when it came from Mr anderson at Soul Bowl. £700 post paid to UK. Let me know any interest.

Unexpected Writing On Labels - Any Stories
Bit of coincidence this topic. Just posted something in "Look At The Box" - Frankie Karl : Rarest label format which has the note "To Vivian. Love always Frankie Karl". So who was Vivian I wonder. Bet Frankie never gave devaluation a thought and was just glad to see one of his records come off the press. Also have Judy Street on Strider which is messaged To Mum... love Judy Corner (her real name) and that actually came out her mothers attic about five years ago!!!

Frankie Karl: Rarest Label?
I'm already getting the feeling that this is a real left fielder!

Frankie Karl: Rarest Label?
Scanned this out of my box and wondered how rare / valuable it was compared to the usual Philtown labels you see it on. (Zoom in and note that it's autographed too. Wonder who Vivian was?)

Modern (Early Modern)
Need to get a cam belt fixed OUCH... expensive stuff. Therefore, would there be any interest in such things as : Mind & Matter Under Your Spell M&M Records M- Corey Blake "How Can I Go On Without You" Capitol Ex+ Connie Laverne "Can't Live Without You" GSF Ex+ Sound fine on the decks and the labels are absolutely mint. No noise, cue burns etc, just very very slighlty used. May have other stuff to along the same lines. PM me if there's anything you want in the same style. Steve

Richard Searling
Many of Richard's "discoveries" were in fact discovered by John Anderson of Soul Bowl and then leaked to Richard to gain maximum exposure. Court Davis has to be a favourite along with Al Scott "What Happened To Yesterday". Superb stuff. However, does anyone remember the phase that Richard went through where he covered things up using cartoon characters? Phantom Janitor (from Hong Kong Phooey)... Top Cat (Larry Houston) etc etc and who could forget (not cartoon related) James Mack & the Chicago Gangsters (Roy Dawson - Over The Top). And what about the time he played Holly St James for the first time at the Casino. I was there and even went up and asked him what it was because he really panicked as it cleared the floor. Don't even think he covered it up but look at that tune now... what a floor filler and what a DJ. Probably the most influential ever IMO of course. (Stick the tenner in the post Richard)

The Guardian's Laura Barton On Tobi Legend
"great arrangements and great lyric writing are just three of the main casualties in this day and age and some of these areas will go the way of dry-stone walling if we're not careful." Oi Dewhirst.... I'll have you know that dry stone walling is alive and well. In fact there are many a Sunday voluteer dry stone waller that have come across bricks, broken bottles and sticks while under taking their art. Now you couldn't make a song about that could you?

Weldon Arthur McDougal III RIP
Sad, sad news... but I have to say that I'm annoyed. No doubt we will see many submissions on here regarding Weldon's sad passing. What a shame I didn't get the same response only a month ago when I posted a request for questions to put to Weldon for inclusion in a Manifesto article. I was hoping to get people involved and all I got was one comment about Weldon's photographs. Nobody could obviously be bothered at the time. Well I hope you all can now!

Philly Re-Grooved - The Tom Moulton Remixes
You are quite correct Sebastian. This is where the confusion arises though: I kinda class Tom's mix as the original release that everyone knows. He has done a much longer mix with more of his trademark strings which is the one that I was talking about... so it's A Tom Moulton Mix re-mix if you like and that's the one that I don't think has seen the light of day yet as a CD or vinyl release. Of course I'm always up for being corrected if anyone knows different! Steve

Philly Re-Grooved - The Tom Moulton Remixes
Certainly the Trammps and the Philly Devotions have been tweaked by Tom. He sent me mixes months ago. I'm not aware of the others having been re-mixed bty Tom though. That said, even he can't remember everything he has done. Don't think either Trammps or Philly D's have come out as there is a real chance of Volume 2 of "A Tom Moulton Mix" being released and they may well appear on there. Steve

Jimmy James - Hey Girl - Uk Pye
Usual story though Steve. How often do you see 'em now and that's how John works. If he doesn't have a record through his hands on a regular basis he'll auction it. Also it may have been requested as an auction item by the seller! Who knows

Philly Re-Grooved - The Tom Moulton Remixes

Martha Reeves Getting All Cocky In Record Collector
I remember doing an interview with her a few years ago and asked her (knowing that her voice had gone) how she had developed "that vibrato style". Her reply was "That's talent my dear". If I could find the tape you may hear me make an apology as I choked on my beer in a rather expensive Manchester hotel.... and believe me, I was more concerened about my beer than her comment

Philly Re-Grooved - The Tom Moulton Remixes
Seems Tom has many other things up his sleeve too. "A Tom Moulton Mix" Volume 2 is on the cards and will feature some unusual (ror Tom fans anyway) stuff. There may also be another "Motown Box" Vol 2 which, although not entirely remixes, does see Tom adding his touch to stereo mixes of previously mono only releases. He's also working on an album of Phil-La of Soul releases, one of which I mentioned previously but still can't let the cat out of the bag. Needless to say that there is a cracking beat ballad on the label from 1967 which may at least give you a clue. Answers on a postcard or just post below and I'll let you into the secret. Hahahaha Steve
