  1. Agree Joan, any DJ playing tunes they don't like is DJing for the wrong reasons.... If you can't play from the heart.... don't play at all....
  2. Not sure that most DJs would be able or want to play across genres Chalky, most are specialists in one style and have very defined boundaries with very little scope for crossover (and I don't mean crossover as a style)... I thought Soul Sam was brilliant at Lifeline on Saturday... played across all styles without losing the floor...everything from Billy Butler - I'll Bet You to Gregory Porter - 1960 What.... best set I've heard him play recently.
  3. Not so far Jordi, but I'll be surprised if it doesn't get a 12" release pretty soon... I predict this will be huge....
  4. As good as R. Kelly is, I think this puts things into perspective......
  5. It's not your question that bothers me, however tired that may be.... It's your statement.... nearly all DJs will have played Frank Wilson.... that bothers me.
  6. Are you for real....???
  7. Absolutely....great tune for the ££'s
  8. Nice version of 'No Limit'... I shall have to invest in a copy..
  9. Quite right... CD decks are not usually standard equipment at Northern events, so it's likely that the promoter knew the score.... I guess that vinyl could have been borrowed for the occasion (there was plenty of that going on at the recent TOTW reunion)... but what would that have really achieved other than a change of complaint.... DJs borrowing vinyl rather than the CD gripe...

Have to say you have to give respect and credit to Don Costa for the production and arrangement....but it's more showtime than soultime...

It's very rare that I agree with you Pete... but have to say you are 100% right on this.... Div's record from a time when DJs should have know better...
  12. I'm not sure what's meant by balance here... Are we talking about known oldies to lesser known and unknown plays... ...or styles....ratio of Northern to Modern to Crosssover to Funk... ...or care in the community If the latter then Mick H and Andy D get my vote..
  13. It's exactly the same take Glyn. When I picked up my first copy of the Contemplations I compared it to Rock Candy to find there's no difference. If I remember correctly the master references in the run out are (not surprisingly) also both the same. It was quite some time after Rock Candy had been played before the Contemplations 45 surfaced, and it still remains to be pretty tough 45 to find.
  14. So are you saying that Ian Levine still has all of his original Mecca plays on vinyl ? Hardly likely is it really......come on...
  15. You also don't get it.... the music currently being played by Colin Curtis is not legacy, Blackpool Mecca tunes, however great they still sound today...it's fresh, soulful dance, keeping with the ethos of an original scene that once had respect for progressive DJs that moved the music and the scene onwards... Many of these tunes never made it to vinyl, and plenty more never even made it to CD, being available as downloads only.... limiting new music to vinyl only plays as a few would demand is ridiculously restrictive, and for what purpose ? Quite frankly I sometimes wonder why most would feel the need to cut previously unreleased 60's tunes to an acetate or carver when a CD is far more practical, and can often be of better sound quality.... it's a technology vs. tradition thing more than anything. If you feel you need to strengthen an arguement by comparing Winstanley to Curtis, then I'm afraid you've already lost.
  16. Not perverse, just technically challenged.... ... though whether Sam plays off the original CD format or from a carver cut from the CD he owns, the key thing is that he's still playing fresh music....
  17. ...now there's an idea..... Chalky get on to it sharpish.....
  18. You're living too dangerously Bearsy, you should get yourself to the nice and safe Lifeline more often.....
  19. The point is still being missed here, there's no condoning playing reissues, bootlegs and copies, regardless of DJ status and history. It's about facing facts. Oldies, revival nights are a different scene, where the playlists are now so obvious and predictable that nobody should really care, be surprised or idignant when or whether the well established tunes are played off CDs. It's no longer important..... that train left the sation years ago. The DJs on the revival scene almost entirely play (the now 'safe') tunes that more the progressive DJs discovered, championed and moved on from long ago. Another point that's missed here is the difference between absolute DJs and collectors who DJ. Absolute DJs generally turn their playlists rapidly and have very short term 'collections' because the important thing is to keep moving forward with fresh music..... and that costs, part of the cost is managed by selling off old plays. The result of which is that absolute DJs don't have the vinyl to cover oldies/revival nights, but most don't care because they're not interested, and the ones that sign up to play at these nights generally do so without original vinyl..... and because some led the way, playing fresh music to earlier floors, then they should be given more respect and not put into the same pigeon hole as the wannabe oldies DJs whos playlists are borrowed. What is important, in contrast is the true progressive scene which absolutely does care that only original format tunes are played, and we should be rightly protective and vocal about that.
  20. I couldn't agree more...you're bang on about the circus.
  21. You couldn't be further from the truth.... Colin Curtis has continued to play original records, though maybe not of a style that you personally would 'shuffle along to'. There are two completely different points in this thread. 1. DJs playing reissues/boots and blasphemously from CDs... If you're gonna attend an oldies, revival night featuring original DJs then don't expect original vinyl.... it's not strictly required for the crowd that the promoter's aiming to attract. 2. Inspirational DJs that shaped the scene, and continue to do so, should be shown a lot more respect.
  22. That shows how much you know..... Colin Curtis is still inspiring dance floors and listeners alike with great, obscure, and under-played music.... Not sold out by any means....still keeping to the traditions of fresh soulful dance music as he always has.... The shame is that the underground soul scene of the time you're referring to has stayed largely in the same groove and is for the most part absolutely ignorant of some incredible soulful dance that shouild be the real lifeblood of a progressive soul scene....
  23. Probably Ian Levine's best.....
