  1. That's pretty accurate, but it should be pointed out that following his Hajj (pilgrimage) to Mecca in spring 1964, Malcolm (by then called El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz) altered his views on separation and race and advocated working with sympathetic whites to overcome racism. Ironically, this approach may have been more threatening to his enemies (of whom there were many, and in many places) and (IMO) it hastened his assassination.
  2. A wonderful record, but not particularly rare. (The represses generally play better than the wavy-line original pressings, btw...)
  3. The Archie Bell versions are great. That Bamboos record is OK (instrumentals don't generally do much for me) but it would have been a whole lot better if the horns weren't so painfully out of tune on the part after the "make it mellow" bit.
  4. Does anyone know if the usual delta numbering system can be used for dating LPs as well as 45s? 11457 means 1956 I believe, but looking at the LP, it seems a bit later than that.
  5. Barbara Lynn put on a fabulous show at last May's festival in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Incredible. And she was really sweet too.

The Paul Jones on Ace and Miltone are the same person - a late '40s LA R&B singer.
  7. Yes, "Henry Hull" is Carl Hall.
  8. Seems to be true - $3M bid for record collection is a fraud.
  9. I think Moerer sold at least 10 copies for $500 recently.
  10. The winner also recently bought this er, attractive earring. I reckon that has the best collection, anyway but it may not be for sale...
  11. Does anyone know what's happened to the Sixties Detroit forum? It just seems to have disappeared along with some of the other content although the main site still seems to be there. There were lots of interesting and detailed threads there with some great photos and scans.
  12. Thanks for the interest - it's now on hold.
  13. Thanks, Paul. I'm really interested if anyone can date Archer records from their AR- numbers. (Like dating Rite or Monarch pressings.)
  14. Sure is - and rare too.
  15. Does anyone have any dating information for Archer (AR-) pressings?
  16. Denbo, There's only one version that I know of - the vocal version. It was recorded by Chess in April 1960 but was unissued until 1968 or 1969 when it was issued on this Blue Horizon LP. Chess issued it in 1970 on the LP Whose Muddy Shoes (LP 1537). I've never seen a 45 of it.
  17. For sale. Full mp3 (direct from the 45) here. Best offer over £200 by tomorrow morning gets it.
  18. Dave - she lives in Finland and records for a Helsinki label, Timmion Records although I believe that her last LP has been recently licensed to US and UK labels. That ought to increase her profile a lot.
  19. Nicole Willis is American (from NYC).

  22. Frank Howard's version was the original - it came out in 1967 and Al's was issued in 1971. The song was written by Larry Lee, Nashville guitarist (who later played with Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock) before he joined Al Green's band. (I can't remember if he's on that live 1972 Al Green DVD.) However, Al remembered the song's origin a little differently during this promo interview - Al Green talks about "Judy".
