  1. maybe it is abuse but its still a negative attitude in my eyes to my opinion that a certain record is played too much and not too my taste rather than positive debate about that subject ...its the kind of thread which would make people stop using a forum and it happened to me which is why i brought it up....and ive often seen you remove posts because they are negative ,abusive or whatever you want to call it as far as how many posts are positive or negative then yes maybe there are more positive than negative so maybe 'constant' was the wrong word....maybe i should have said that i wasnt surprised pw was getting a slating from some on here for daring to say anything about northern ...which is really my point...why do some people on here think its a bad thing that a famous person is speaking about northern?...
  2. just seen on fb that elaine from the northern soul film will also be on bbc tomorrow.....maybe pete wont be the son of satan now he's possibly doing it to promote her new film ?...its at 830am so will be at work and miss it unless its on you tube or bbc site later
  3. i dont think its a case of people not handling others with different views mike.....for instance in the thread on what tune do you not like to hear played out i posted another shout for 'just loving you' and was told i knew nothing about music, was mentally retarded and probably had a lighthouse cd in my collection..now you may laugh but hardly constructive debate and as i didnt know the poster it wasnt banter....
  4. i agree a forum would be boring if we all thought the same..its just it seems to me whenever anyone 'outside' the scene trys to do or say anything that may have something to do with northern soul they are almost automatically shot down ....amy whinehouse recording a soul album...duffy using northern soul dancers in a video....the soul boy FICTIONAL FILM NOT A DOCUMENTARY ...paul o grady, pete waterman or anybody else famous 'promoting' and speaking highly remember of the uk soul scene....and sadly some of these ARE the most popular threads (except ovo/boots ofcourse!) and that kinda proves my point i think..... dean
  5. numbers could be declining for all sorts of reasons...too many venues or the fact none of us have the spare cash we did 5 years ago so have to pick and choose!! as far as pw goes..ok hes made money out of shiot music (not the first!) and said some stupid things and maybe tomorrow on bbc he will do the same BUT there might also be some in their 20s watching it who are board with todays shit and think WTF is that...they might like what they see and hear despite what pw says aboout wigan blah blah blah...if they get on line and start checking out tunes and venues etc surely thats a good thing...or do you wanna keep this precious scene to yourselves untill theres no one left with the legs to actually dance....some may come and then leave as it wont be for them...others will be bitten like some of you were after TOTP ...or were you all into it before that and everyone after was a twat? is he cashing in ?....i think he just loves soul music and if he is so what.....many on here do nights without paying djs....sell bootlegs...t shirts...mugs...and loads more tat...aren't they...and anyone whos bought anything with a fist on it are helping them... sadly the constant negativity on this site is why so many people i know no longer post dean chairman of the pw fanclub
  6. well im always dancin...if its 60s!....but on the whole would agree more ladies dance than blokes....maybe now theyre older those blokes who once danced but dont anymore are a bit self concious while the women dont give a shit just wanna have a top nite out...although i think in the south west its probably equal certainly at go go children and soulfusion possibly has more women!! agree their are more male djs collectors...doesnt make us better rthan those few women who do it too but think males are more likely to collect/hoard in any scene/hobby accept collecting shoes/handbags! dean
  7. but dont be put off!...thats the best bit,you will always be learning ...you will always be wanting another tune...nobody knows/has everything...great! basically anything other than originals , when you come to sell...normally to buy bigger tunes...will be only worth what you paid..if youre lucky!...unless two twats get on a bidding war on ebay!...buy originals at the right price...especially not so well known tunes and you could make a profit... but like most ...first get all those big tunes you want that you will probably never afford on original...best on reissue on labels like grapevine and kent... most of all enjoy!!! dean
  8. im entitled to my opinion as you are...didnt say it wasnt good musically ...said i didnt like it..two different things mate....i apprciate gary barlow can write a good pop song dont mean i wanna fuckin hear it...i hear just loving you at least every month,as im out every weekend and thats too much for me.....tone deaf ? nope ,played guitar ,bass and drums....mentally retarded..now youre just being ...well you....to be honest most of my plays, buys and fave dancers are uptempo 60s and rnb.... as for the lighthouse cd,it probably has more in common with just loving you than anything i own... sorry for the language 'mods' but being told im mentally retarded, tone deaf and know nuffin about music does tend to piss me off a bit! dean

my first year on a scoot and the rallies too...happy daze!....remember that disc but not seen one for years..had the 'patches' one a while back..sold on ebay for a couple of quid too dean
  11. i suppose to 'normal' people 40 - 65 year olds getting banned is news...doesnt happen at most tea dances..we all know of course 40 - 65 years olds on certain scenes are still getting up to no good...thankfully!! dean
  12. agreed and i did mention this to the seller that even if the record had never 'stuck' or popped for them on any deck (which i find impossible to believe) aswell as the dozens of light scratches that did not affect play there WAS a scratch which could be felt so it was by no means ex condition dean
  13. hi rod...to be honest thought about naming and shaming but didnt even think that i may be able to get help from ss!...stupid really,doh!!...but in the end got fed up with seller saying they didnt think there was anything wrong and as it played 'ok' on one deck just decided to keep it and check it first everytime i played it out on other decks.... cheers dean
  14. i also bought from a seller on here who desribed the record as ex,it had a you tube clip which wasnt the item for sale but also said it had been selling for upto $300 on ebay wasnt in manships book and i liked it a lot so went for it...when the tune arrived it had numeruos 'light' scratches through havin no sleeve at one time or another i would guess and a nasty 5mm scatch which on one of my decks (and a friends) 'stuck'...on the other it popped... the seller did answer my message but told me they used it regular and never had a problem withit and thought it was ex....they implied i was lying and thought it was strange when i was asking for a only partial refund......i didnt want a full refund as it was from europe and after checking popsike and seeing NO sales anywhere like £300 and them telling me they had played it out on various decks without ever having a problem i had a feeling if i sent it back it would never reach them...if you know what i mean!...after about 4 messages back and forth i gave up....told them i would put it down to experience...a couple of weeks later they messaged me saying they had some new sales coming up soon and would maybe do me a discount on one of them...they were good tunes but to be honest well over priced so needless to say i didnt bother.. i have played the tune out but have to check on every deck i use and chringe a bit when the 3 or 4 pops are about to be heard ive also had tunes on ebay that were not as described and both have been refunded in full... BUT this is also the ONLY time ive had a problem with ss sellers ... i will continue to buy from here with confidence...but i buy a lot of tunes and dont have much cash to do it so sellers......once bitten twice shy...you lose in the long run dean
  15. sho bout to drive me wild- al robinson-pulsar demo-£20....brilliant slightly funky edged northern...as played by karl heard...just picked up another one of these so... ...paypal as a gift and free post in the uk cheers dean
  16. good post pete.. yes they look sad and will be embaressing if non soulie friends see it and think thats what im about...it doesnt piss me off and i dont think it threatens my part of our scene.....i go to kings hall once a year and have a great time ,never been to blackpool and even before this video dont think i ever will.... how long will these big weekenders of same old tunes to the same even older faces last do you think?...surely most oldies fans wanting nostalgia have got to be getting on a bit now...in maybe 5 years i think most of these would have stoppped going out,the youngsters getting into it through these events will still be young and hopefully will by then be looking for more soul than whats on 'goldmine sevens' and attending smaller venues playing 'newer' selections...i hope its kinda ironic really....as has been said these events are more like a social to a lot of people and they just wanna dance to records played at wigan etc....i wonder how many would get really nostalgic and still go if the alnighters started at 12pm and dindnt serve alcohol!! dean
  17. good review of what sounded a good night...although been to 'the dam' 3 times and always had a good time!!...next time gonna have to take in the soul club....and the 19th may 2012 is the weekend after my 45th so sounds as good a time as any !! dean
  18. while i agree there are maybe too many nights ,especially in some areas i obviously dont agree with an advertising restriction mate as go go children in bristol is a monthly night.....we have been on the first saturday now for nearly two years and coming upto our 4th birthday some local promoters think of us and dont clash others dont and do.....if you know what i mean! its a shame when it happens not just because we lose a few but because i would like to go to their gigs too!!....luckily for us we are close to bristol centre and bristol being what it is we can attract enuff people, non travelling soulies and WELL BEHAVED NON SOULIES to cover costs at least and have a good night... i always advertise on soul source, maybe it helps ,maybe not i think you have to use every form of media you can nowadays...forums,flyers,posters,facebook and word of mouth the only answer to nights clashing is down to the promoters...as nighters especially rely on travellers i dont think there is any need for any new nights (...as i said on the south coast thread when some thought it was a good idea to have another nighter)... those that are on need to work together and try and have their individual nights (like we do) on the same 1st or 3rd friday or saturday of the month, whichever it may be.....with all the internet etc we have wouldnt it be great if all the big allnighters at least were all on different weekends right through the year...obviously with booking venues this wouldnt be easy to start with but after a while who knows...it can be done but would take compromise occasionally i believe next year will be even tougher...bidds im sure was only quite because it so close to xmas...i know i would have rather been up there than the local night i went to (even though i had a good time) but stoke for me is an overnight stop and 3 times more expensive when all is considered...i hope to be up NYE...and if i still have a job and mace carries on....next year too, lets hope so dean
  19. richard knight and watson and the sherlocks are brilliant bargains!...watson has a crackin b side too dean

good post...the cd i have of the philly station was definately aimed at the black side of town!....the jingles are mental...FAST jive talkin...with the fashions of the day.....cant imagine many white americans catching most of what they were saying!!...reminds me a lot of the pirate stations in the big cities of today talking patios and aiming for the jamaican parts of bristol, london etc
  21. Spacehopper replied to a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
not sure if i agree with that to be honest....put next to motown most of what we call northern is TOO BLACK which is precisely why it never made it back then and only got plays on the black stations and clubs and not the whit IMHO...colleges would have played some but a lot of more gargage/soul or as ive heard it called 'phrat' rock
  22. Spacehopper replied to a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
played in clubs in the black areas of all major cities and radio stations...got a cd at home cant remember the jock but its from philly about 69...loads of stuff on their i recognise including jingles by carl holmes with snippets of soul dance number 3!! alongside the bigger tunes by james brown etc... ....remember they also had the bands playing live at their clubs as most were locals in places like detroit chicago and philly....in the 70s my parents used to go to the U.S bases in norfolk ,my auntie was married to a black american and most of the crowd were black dancing to smaller soul bands over from the states, not the big motown acts..sadly shes forgot the names now...will try dig out some pics when i go up at xmas dean dean
  23. Spacehopper replied to a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
ofcourse a lot of the stuff we call and dance to as northern would have been played on the beach scene and at teen hi school dances back then....think i would have rather been at the black underground and probably illegal rnb and soul clubs though!....kinda like a lot of the dodgy reggae clubs ive been to and played at in the past!! dean

while i think we can all feel a little sense of pride in keeping soul music going and giving a new lease of life to records and artists which didnt get national exposure back in the day i think we also have to realise we were not the first people to play and dance to this music!... ...whatever it was called..black rnb and soul music was definately being played and danced to when it was being made all over the states...if not why are the so many records about dance crazes!...check out the condition of some of the records coming over from the states that have sat in boxes for 40 years...theyve been played and danced to alright!...its great having a mint record as a collector but theres also something about having a record with a little wear,a little history of other people way back enjoying it too... ...and as has already been said its great seeing feedback on you tube from both black and white memories of dances and tunes its not so different today...there are clubs all over the uk and states playing hip hop and dancehall reggae which are on small independant labels and will never make it into the charts...but those artists are huge in those areas although unknown to the wider public...its nuffin new and like i said we were not the first...although they danced very different of course...they would have danced in couples!! dean
