  8. ha ha just heard to day i will be playing at camber sands in the soul room...played there (and hemsby, same organisers)before and am looking forward to it BUT do agree alot of rally goers are not as polite as those on soul scene and while northern is loved for the most part it is the cd buying nostalgia types who also like a lot of other genres at weston a few weeks back stayed in the soul rooms which were ok although didnt really hear nuffin i didnt know....way too much alcohol , testosterone and right wing politics STILL in the other rooms...always feel like it could kick off (which it did last year !) ive never had that at northern venues but at camber the soul room will be wicked...lots of djs who also play on the soul scene and a dancin comp with some good movers although i first heard soul from my dad and then my alnighter going older bruv it was the 80s rallies where i really first did alnighters etc inc tiffanys..saw edwin a few times and eddie holman, mary wells,jj barnes and a few more but it was right wing skins that made me leave...got another lammy 6 years back and love it although if i came down to my scoot or a couple grand worth of my vinyl there'd be no compition, scoot would be gone. and on the 24th sept will be at the gloucester alnight and not the woolacombe rally...only do a couple of rallies now where years ago would only miss one a year so to sum up while the scooter and soul scenes can be very similiar they can also be worlds apart dean
  9. not bought nuffin for about a month and wont be either due to new gearbox and seat for me lammy... anyway went a bit mad over the june/july,not sure what 5 were last but i think... baby jane/otis clay dear lord above/debbie and the lads backslop/baby earl im hurting/buddy giles thats a friend/harrold burrage dean
  10. surprised only one shout for 'duke'...not just the big artists bobby bland and buddy ace but the lamp sisters , paulette parker and doug banks...MOST are cheap too !! also the other southern label not mentioned backbeat released a few crackers personally couldnt name a fave tho ohh atlantic anyone ?/ dean
  11. dont normally judge before watching/listening but it does look a bit shit BUT none of us OWN northern...people can do what they want...maybe its someone jumpin on the possible future bandwagon maybe its a theatre luvvie who also loves soul..i dunno ,dont really care either to be honest...lifes too short and when this and all the other films, plays and books are done with (cos none of them will be classics) im sure there will still be djs playing great american (and british)soul music for us to dance to:D and thats all that matters... dean
  12. current spin for me is ronnie mitchells 'hang loose' have to take the pitch down a bit for that... also gloria jones 'heartbeat' 'tainted love'or little richards 'i need love' actually quite a few 'okeh' releases (vibrations, sandi sheldon etc) dean
  13. i think with these 'overpayed' classics you have to remember the first time you heard it...just cos you may be bored with a tune it doesnt mean its crap....if ya didnt like it then...fair enuff thats your opinion...its a good job we didnt all like the same stuff... i love it but dont get that excited when i hear it out anymore, saying that if anyones got an original they wanna sell me for a couple of quid i'll take it off ya hands:D dean
  14. to answer the question i dont think the majority of big djs are playing for themselves but for the promoter who books them cos unlike the majority of soul sources who are COLLECTORS most people 'out on the floor' (especially of a certain age) are nostagia hunters.....our guests have told us they loved playing go go cos they can play sumfin different...at MOST clubs if the dj didnt play the big tunes people wouldnt dance....wouldnt come back...djs wouldnt get booked again... we at go go children play a lot of different stuff,in fact im probably the only one who puts some classics in to keep the nostalgia hunters happy,we are 'lucky ' that being a soul desert in bristol we do attract a lot of young people who dont know all the old stuff but just love good 60s tunes..and love to dance and not talk...so we can throw in the unknown without clearing the floor...most of the time !! but do we get any guest slots ?..other than the other bristol nite 'getting together'....no!...im out most weekends and HAVE had slots at most of the local nites..had people dancin and a lot of good comments...but hardly any returns, only one in the last year and a half....im not bitter or bothered (although i love djing and seeing people get into my collection)...its just how it is...too many djs ...most clubs only 3 or 4 nites a year....you do the maths.... dean
  15. was only talkin bout this the other day...top 500 gets looked down upon but flick through it and theres probably a couple hundred not being played....which 4 pros you all talkin bout...they did a couple dean
  16. avnt seen it yet...when i do,will i be slagged off on here if i admit to watchin it on a bootleg dvd ? cant see it being released in bristol pm me if you sneaked a recorder into kings hall.. but only if you were not behind 600 lovies in big hats!! dean
  17. this was me... what condition my condition was in-betty lavette spoiled child-gary brown baby jane-otis clay bump ball-combinations live on-jb troy tailor made for me-edi trip fool to fool-shep find me somebody-bobby womack love factory-eloise laws (requested) you dont mean me no good-jelly beans thats what i want-syng mcgowan do you still love me-cookie jackson aint what i do-peggy paxton the queen-big ella big mama-the experts a little bit hurt-julian covay elijah rockin with soul-hank jacobs second set.. leave me alone-ray agee what more-zz hill mama-ruth brown dont give me your love-dorothy berry just another girl-four pros lend me your hand-kindly shepherds dear lord above-debbie and the lads backslop-baby earl originals ofcourse, mainly classics as most of the other dj spins were semi known... dean
  18. yes the seller is morally wrong but im sure he would say business is business....if its not stated original i always check manships book and ask the seller the questions...if they dont answer then i take it as a boot.....
  19. talking of clashes ive just had a thought....why dont the promoters come together and use their residents to have a REAL clash...reggae soundsystem styleee....one room...two systems (to avoid any confusion with whos playing at any time) ...and whoever keeps the floor busiest wins...the loser packs in his nite...a bit tongue in cheek and would never happen but would be interesting to see who had the bottle to do it !! dean
  20. sadly i think this will never stop while there are punters out there.....its human nature that some people just dont give a f*** ! aswell as the scooter scene, northern has been having a bit of a revival amoungst 40 sumfins for the last few years , looking around stoke last week i did wonder how long events of this size will go on without youngblood (yes i know there were some youngsters there, inc one who must have only been about 12,great dancer he was too !)...i suspect not long ...so i think the future is smaller and less nites without so many clashes....as has happened in the south west this year speaking for ourselves at go go children in bristol.....john started our night because there was no strictly 60s nites in bristol and while we welcome the few travellers we get it is more of a "local thing for local people" a lot of which are too young to remember or even know about the 70s scene.. we ran on the 3rd friday for 2 years without hardly any clashes, when we lost our venue we could only get a saturday night and tried our hardest to find a regular date that didnt clash with other simaliar nites in the south west...emailing all promoters to ask for their future dates.(although this was also because me and nicci are regular dancers at riverside, wooten hall, bridgewater and soulfusion.and didnt wanna miss any nites:yes: )..although the 1st saturday does clash with one of hot buttered soul nites in bris im sure mike would agree both our music and crowd are very different as for the other bristol nite 'getting together' which does play 60s aswell as 70s we both try our hardest to HELP each other out..maybe this is because we are ina bit of a soul desert down here in bristol...you northerners dont know how lucky you are with so many punters... sort it out FFS !! dean
  21. irene...stuck on my baby...smash rosco and barbara...could this be love...old town cheers dean
  22. bristol is a bit of a soul backwater.....despite yate being just up the road as is goucester which has always had lots of soul...i suppose our main claim to fame was the discovery of i'll hold you/frankie and johnny in a little shop in st pauls BUT we do get a lot of youngsters at bristol soul nites because there are not so many dads (and grandads) dancin:D so maybe this will be a soul city of the future.. i think with the exeption of manchester there doesnt seem to be many BIG soul cities...maybe too much competition from other genres, bristol has always had a big reggae following which bred both trip hop and drum and bass 'stars'.... dean

  25. umm would like to say its cos of knowing the breaks etc but c'mon we didnt know the breaks years ago either and still danced....i think it is more to do with age...most cant dance all night without a rest anymore so pace theirselves by dancin to faves europe and america have younger crowds who seem to be how we once were...as does go go children in bristol where only half the crowd are 'soulies' on the scene over the age of 30,the rest are in their twenties and hardly know any of the tunes but are well up for them as long as they are quality dancers....rnb,northern,funk,ska or beat and remember we all get a little bit more....'not so good as the old days...this would have never been played at wigan!!' as we get older....... or maybe jus cos there are not so many drugs being taken now
