Lookbacks
hi dave...i write some of those terrible reveiws of my 'shared' promotion but make no apology for it !....if its half empty i write it,if no one dances...i write it ...if its 'wicked' and people shout for more at the end ..i write it ...and my playlist..i write it...its not bullshit its a true reveiw of the night which hopefully may make some new punters give us a look...Bristol is a bit of a soul backwater and there are no other nights like us in the area.... one of the other residents 'john stapleton' also puts up his playlists but the other two residents do not come on here and only a handful of soul sources give us a look so we dont have pages of replies....there are soul fans outside of soul source remember give our lookbacks a lookback.....with an open mind you'll have a good time @ GO GO CHILDREN 'another' dean

How Instrumentals Have Dated
what about the joker...dont hear it now but still love it and the original is still bloody expensive !...and thats not that all night band wigan joker shit !... remember my dad had little quennie early 70s and i use to plat it aged about 5 long before id heard of northern...sliced toms still great and theres a REALLY bad cover of that and possibly the worst instrumental cover is ive got something good on soul galore i cant imagine it ever got played out down here in south west still hear hank jacobs ..awesome !....and fortune teller version is gettin spins...one ive started playing is fast steppin/flame n king bad...wicked ! nothing wrong with a good proper instrumental as opposed to a backing track with the vocals left out...if ya know what i mean dean

Cardiac Arrest Northern Soul
although i think im right in saying thats a different beat again, more of a 'southern' atlantic kinda otis/sam and dave stomper....but then who cant dance to otis ...however fast !
-
Cardiac Arrest Northern Soul
by the way ive been playing the mobs version of open the doors lately and been told on more than one occasion its too fast...what !...for me this is one of those tunes that is impossible for me NOT to dance....
-
Cardiac Arrest Northern Soul
i agree with whoever said it was the beat and how you dance rather than the speed of the tune... i can dance to most four to the floor rhythms its those that are on the back beat or after the beat if ya know what i mean !...not sure of the musical term even though i played the drums for years examples would be heatwave, who who song and higher and higher, too many fish in the sea..the kittens tune mentioned and as long as i got my baby jackie day...i think ..havnt played it in a while where as if the drummer hits that snare four times on the beat im in heaven ...and can normally keep up !

The North South Divide
a lot of the points raised are spot on....dont get passed stoke so not gonna compare with up north for soul niters and unlike the 80s when i went to every rally dont go to that many now but the ones i do go on are more alcohol fuelled with scooters and 'the social' being more important to most than the music.....this then also means there tend to be more OF THE SAME oldies played... at our local rally in weston last year i heard frank wilson 6 times over the weekend in two venues...this year it seemed to be alfie davidson 5 times ! most of the nites will be like this (maybe they are the 'on any format 'venues?)...hemsby and camber have top soul rooms though...not just cos ive played them either !! but think they are all scooter loving soul djs rather than soul loving scooter djs.......never done hip shaker but must say im suprised , for some reason imagined it too be better as far as niters ..not many down here in the southwest.....the riverside niter hopefully will be the first of many...mainly uptempo 60s stuff with lots of semi known although still a few 'soul nite oldies' ...tunes aswell as punters ! but a great nite without loads of doubles ...and good dancefloor manners dave thorley tried a different approach at berkley though which sadly wasnt supported...more unknown and towards seventies.....although still some classics so should have been supported more IMHO, was a great venue... most of the soul nites here in the south west have good dancefloor manners.....but not many youngsters its true......Bristol however is different will always get enthusiastic youngsters with drinks but normally leave them on tables once told...and never any bad attitudes or trouble...this is after all , as banksy put it 'the mild mild west'... will avta get up north soon ! dean

Info On Studio One Lp
i have an album i bought about 15 years ago and have only seen on an auction list once in that time...a good friend and reggae collector told me a story about it when i bought it..... its called'best of studio one vol 4' and is a canadian bootleg and was called vol4 after the 3 canadian heartbeat lps....it was obviously mastered off 7" singles as you can here the hiss on the fade out so common on a lot of studio one JA pressings despite the vinyl being in ex condition... the story goes after coxsonne heard of it he released an lp called 'pirates choice' with remixed versions of the tunes... anyone seen one before ?...any idea of its value ? cheers dean

Was James Brown The Godfather Of Soul?
JB the godfather ?.....well he did to time for trying to kill his mrs with a shotgun didnt he ?...dont know about cutting horses heads off but still a dodgy dood ! but seriously yes hes funk rather than what we call soul but its all branches of the same tree really and although i dont really do funk i DO like JB so he must have sumfin different....get on the good foot...superbad...popcorn wow ! and then how soulful is mans world or please please me... and then the rnb of night train ! musically he was a genius...saw him live at a festival in bristol few years back...what a buzz he created...packed marqee and even 15 year olds were getting it.... on the whole i prefer 'northern' artists but along with marvin and stevie you have to recognise their genius and influence (even prince's stage act) and i think thats why he deserves the title of the godfather..... and he was cool as fuck and could dance... i mean you only have to say JB and everyone knows who you mean !!

Our Music
bloody 'ell.....havnt read most of the posts on this thread as theyre going off on way too many tangents for me to keep up ! this is my 2 pennies worth....as far as the first post saying because of the internet too many tunes are going abroad...i was only thinkin earlier while trawling thru ebay and all the various dealer sites how much music was coming INTO the country ! its a global market as with everything else.....and thats a good thing...should we send all the lammies back to italy and india? ofcourse not.....people often talk about uk youngsters not getting into the scene enuff....so i welcome the world waking up to this great scene...if nothing else in 20 years time when there COULD be lots of collections for sale to pay for our old age there will still be a market and we wouldnt have wasted our money... and at least we talkin bout sumfin different...not the old OVO topic

Cds
not this old chestnut !!... no cds at soul nights/nighters...and its because the music is so important....if you allow boots and cds everyone will have those big tunes you travel miles to hear a certain dj play and that moment when you here that intro youve been waitin for before runnin back to the floor mid conversation will not happen.... and you dont have to play those same old original vinyl tunes either, thats just safe (bad) djing...there are lots of wicked tunes not getting enuff plays as the baddy in the incredibles said....when everyone is special.....no one is ! dean
