This Weeks Original Mastercuts On Starpoint With Ian Dewhirst
Well it wasn't exactly 2 weeks off. It was more like a none-stop marathon around the U.K, with me attempting to catch a bit of sleep in-between events and being booted out of hotels for 'unruly behaviour' LOL! So following 2 lectures in Bristol and Brighton, the Luxury Soul Weekender in Birmingham and the North Lancs Soul Festival in Morcambe I'm only just recovering! Note to self: must pace myself better in future! But hey - what a 2 weeks for music! I'm fired up for the next year's worth of Original Mastercuts shows now. So much stuff to listen to as well...... So back in the saddle behind the wheels of steel again for the first time in 3 weeks folks and boy do we have a show for you coming up LIVE @ 2.00 pm this Sunday afternoon - Soulful KILLERS all the way folks....... Ron Hall & The Motherfunkaz * Patti Austin & James Ingram * Tyrone Dixon feat John Davis* Dawn Tallman * Glenn Jones * Krystol * Raydio * Barbara Mason* Barry & Glodean White * Perry & Sanlin * LTG Exchange * Debbie Taylor * The Pioneers * Alice Clark * Ike Perkins * Jean Shy * Lee Garrett * Lowrell * Martine Girault * Barry White * Tiffany Villareal * Peace Of Mind See you @ 2.00! Your Favourite Compilation Lp
Yep, that sounds par for the course LOL. Don't know where I got the energy for 2 all-nighters and an all-dayer every weekend then a shagging marathon on the Sunday night. No wonder I was always knackered 'til the following Thursday............ Ian D

Your Favourite Compilation Lp
Have to agree with you there Pete. That's what happened when Dave Godin rang up in '74 asking if I wanted to compile a Northern Soul Stax LP! I said yes, of course, and then I realised I wasn't exactly working with the best core material. I'd rather have done the Southern one to be honest......and I was equally as scathing when Ace brought out the recent Stax meets Motown comp........ Ian D

This Weeks Original Mastercuts On Starpoint With Ian Dewhirst
This week a very, very hung-over and knackered Ian D broadcasted LIVE for a beautiful Sunday afternoon session from the Luxury Soul Weekender @ Birmingham. Not pretty LOL.... There's a bit of a streaming issue on a couple of tracks but otherwise OK for an outside broadcast and definitely gets better the further you get in if you 'scuse the expression......... Anyway, the sun was shining and everyone had the chance to sit on the terrace, soak up some Soulful Sunday afternoon killers and wonder if life could be any better as we do the usual Original Mastercuts trawl through the various eras touching on some pumping House, smooth 80's, Oddballs and Oddities, Modern Soul, Crossover, Vintage Soul and some pure Soulful delights from the last few years. Lp's Vs 45's
Will do Baz. I'm pretty sure I've got a handle on what you like....... Ian D

Lp's Vs 45's
Agreed. We were spoilt with the sheer quality of these two - two of the most successful 'themed' Soul albums ever made. Early Millie never disappoints........ Ian D

Lp's Vs 45's
I've got some other bits and pieces up on Discogs but I think these are probably the ones which will appeal to an older Soul audience. I'm still going through stuff so when I have a mo I'll stick some more up. I do have thousands of 45's which I still haven't got round to sticking up yet with quite a bit of Deep stuff in there so If I see any up your street I'll give you a shout...... In the meantime it may be worth having a trawl through here all LP's and 12"'s that I've listed to date (if you don't mind wading through a lot of Disco, Jazz-Funk and Commercial gear: https://www.discogs.com/sell/list?seller=Mastercuts Best, Ian D

Records That Defy The Rules Of What Is Soul
Funnily enough he was on TV AM last year on one of the rare occasions when I happened to be watching and they invited viewers to e-mail with any questions so I actually sent 'em an e-mail asking about "Can't Help Loving You" but they declined to answer me LOL....a shame as it would've been interesting to get a response. To this day it's still one of the greatest orchestrated productions I've ever heard........ If only the Invitations had been singing it instead....... Ian D

Northern Soul: Music, drugs And Subcultural Identity
Please give him my regards next time you talk to him. The last time I bumped into Andy was in a record shop in Camden in the 80's. He was always an intelligent guy as was Psycho from Leeds, who was my best mate in the 80's but I haven't seen hide nor hair of either of 'em since......... Ian D

Ever Bought A Record Blind?
Loads. That was half the fun when records were cheap enough that you could take some chances. Best period was the early 70's when you could buy 20 U.S. cut-out 45's for a quid or get Soul Packs for a similar price! Some I have bought blind include Willie Hutch "The Duck"/"Love Runs Out", Lenny Curtis "Nothing Can Help You Now", Al DeLory "Right On", The Pointer Sisters "Send Him Back", Ronnie & Robyn "As Long As You Love Me (I'll Stay)", Si Hightower "I Know You're Leaving Me", Clyde McPhatter album with "Please Give Me One More Chance" etc, etc.... Northern Soul: Music, drugs And Subcultural Identity
That wouldn't be the notorious Andy Wilson from Harrogate would it? He of the long black leather coat, curly hair, constant dribble and uncompromising attitude would it................? Ian D

Stevie Wonder
Yes, what an absolute pile of crud that was. I remember being in Los Angeles when it came out and watching all these poor black people rushing to the stores to get hold of a copy as the stores couldn't keep the shelves stocked up fast enough as it was the fastest-selling Motown album of all time. What on earth were they thinking? I remember thinking when I heard the lyrics to "Knocks Me Off My Feet" that you'd have to be blind to get away with lyrics like that...... Ian D

Ian Levine - The Northern Soul Radio Special
Cheers Malc! I said I'd post this a week ago but got overwhelmed with other stuff so mucho thanks! Best, Ian D

Which Tracks For A Compilation
He won't go far wrong with the Wheel, Torch, Mecca, Wigan albums for the obvious ones from the early era as they're probably a good place to start - they've done incredibly well - at the last count they were up to 40k apiece - 160k total which is incredible in the current market, so they're pretty popular. However, they only reflect the Sony/BMG back catalogue so I'd add some of the obvious Kent and Goldmine releases plus that 'Soul Satisfaction' CD from Universal is pretty good too...... Ian D
-
The Superlatives - The Movement - Soul Intention
Yep, loving the full record Phil. Now that I've heard the whole thing I take back the 'messy' comment. True 100% Northern Soul mate! First legal release on "I Still Love You" too! Ian D
