Any Records Recorded Or Released Under Suffrance
I was always highly sceptical of Dave Godin's insistence that Irma Thomas's 'Anyone Who Knows What Love Is Will Understand' was the one-off perfect take on the single and messed up on the LP version - as a 'protest' by Irma. Er..right Dave. I think It's a nice fantasy that people have about soul singers coming into the studio all spiritually fired-up and doing one incredible take. In reality there was probably a lot of sitting around and things going wrong, not to mention drugs, booze and personal conflicts going on.

Any Records Recorded Or Released Under Suffrance
A lot of Motown material seems to have been a case of Berry Gordy telling singers and groups to record this or that track. Of course, this led to artists like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye insisting upon more control over their careers. Wasn't one of Martha and the Vandellas biggest hits recorded under duress? I seem to recall Martha Reeves saying she tried to sound bored on the record. Jimmy Mack perhaps?

60S Uk Soul Releases
I believe they were a group of session musicians not an actual marching band. You would have problems marching around with a Hammond organ and a piano to be honest.
-
60S Uk Soul Releases
Yes, I presume there must have been deals with companies e.g. Goldwax to release a certain amount of tracks. As for 'Condition Red' - well, it probably fuelled many a youth-club night. They played it at our school discos sandwiched between Terry Jacks and The Wombles!

60S Uk Soul Releases
They were the foundation of the UK's obsession with rare soul and latterly what became Northern, but what was the reason why certain Soul/RnB records were released in the UK? OK, Tamla Motown was set up as a conduit for selected material from the Detroit label(s) releases, and UK Sue seemed to exist to reflect Guy Stevens' own personal tastes. PYE seemed to concentrate on the blues stuff, but what about others? Oriole, UK King, Stateside etc. Were their releases chosen becasue they were regional/national hits or because they just caught the fancy of some record exec? Some of the Stateside releases for instance. Baltimore and Ohio Marching Band b/w Lapland/Condition Red (Only made 94 on the US charts. Does this justify a UK release?) Mary Love - Lay This Burden Down (Didn't seem to be a success in the US charts, unlike 'You Turned My Bitter Into Sweet' which probably led to the 1965 UK King release) Same goes for: The Sharpees - Tired of Being Lonely; Vernon Garrett - Turn Back the Hands of Time; The Fascinations - Girls Are Out to Get You; Dean Parrish - Determination; Alvin Cash - The Philly Freeze; Darrell Banks - Open The Door To Your Heart b/w Our Love (Is In The Pocket); Rufus Lumley - I'm Standing; The Invitations - What's Wrong With Me Baby; etc... Why some records and not others?

Reasons For Uk Release?
Just curious. What were the reasons that a US Soul/RnB record would be released in the UK? OK, Tamla Motown were a conduit specifically for the Detroit label(s) releases, and the UK Sue label seemed to be based on what Guy Stevens liked. But what about other stuff? Was it because they were regional or national hits in the US or did someone decide this was what the budding soul fans in the 60s wanted?

This R&b Thing ?
As a fan of Black American music I've always found a lot of Northern 'classics' far too pop and asinine for my puritanical tastes, whereas 50s/early 60s RnB is (with a few honourable exceptions) an almost pure Black music form. Mind you, after hearing the 50th sax solo of the night, I do get a bit worn down...

Were There Any Older Guys At Wigan?
Maybe...I was at school with a guy who regularly went to Wigan when he was 13. Mind you, he looked, dressed and acted a lot older.
