The 60s mods link is pretty obvious to anyone familiar with the history of the scene... and it's always been my opinion that the mod revival did a great deal to keep Northern alive and kicking through a lot of the 80s and even influenced a lot of the more R'n'B-style or slower sounds that were popular at Stafford and other nights. This, as i've discovered, is an opinion that produces mixed opinions to say the least! Major reason that i think that i'm at least partly right is, from my perspective as a one-time Edinburgh Mod, for a long time the only events that seemed to be held in Scotland (and almost entirely in East coast Scotland for some reason...) were often organised by people with some link to the mod scene and which attracted masses of like-minded young punters, a lot of whom are still in the scene to some extent today. Ditto Stafford and the newies scene. Could not believe that a nighter would get away with playing slowies and R'n'B-style music - very avant garde! - but again as a mod i found it naturally very acceptable. I mean Arthur Alexander, Stewart Ames, Roy Roberts, Tommy Navarro, Exits and masses more - fantastic sounds! Mind you, there were always loads of mod revivalists who did and do hate soul. So why be a bloody mod in the first place then for pete's sake?

I noticed Bob Carolgees from Tiswas was also selling his socks on Ebay a while back. Second-hand socks? Mmmmm

Have personally gone from total 'MUST be an original 45' 60s-soul fascist in my youth to 'who cares as long as the sounds are all right' knackered old geezer. Still have two minor problems with DJs using Cds or Ipoddery though: 1. I remain scornful of DJs lapping up praise for playing tunes that they've got from a download or off some CD they paid £5 for in HMV or wherever. People who've gone to the time, trouble and money of tracking down and playing a rare 45 deserve respect! 2. And...paying (often quite a lot of) entry money to a night that features an excess of Cds and/or poddin' kinda rankles But on the whole the sound is still what counts!

Stardust 45 has an inferior sound quality (at least the copy i heard did...) to the LP. Looks cheap, sounds cheap and it is cheap.

Well I know a lot of them and some of them used to be mods!

After reading Too Darn Soulful, I simply got the feeling that Nowell simply wasn't interested in the post-Wigan era since it had no personal relevance to him. Probably a bit too slow and too much R'n'B as well. Much preferred the book 'The In-Crowd' anyway...

This track first appeared for widespread consumption on the RCA compilation 'Jumping at the Go-Go' in the 70s, which was one of the best NS compilations around prior to the appearance of the Kent LPs.

Percy Sledge's 'When a man loves a woman' has a terrible backing. When Sledge heard it, he insisted it had to be re-recorded - only for the first verson to be released (and become the first 'deep soul' number one record).

Bought various items in Oxfam and the like if they had US labels or otherwise looked interesting and they all, without exception, were total junk! C+W, folk, etc. Bought a record in a charity shop by a group called the Emotional Upsets because its title was 'Maintain Your Cool'. Was it the same as the Volumes track? Nope! Oh, well one day...

Do I Love You is certainly up there, especially since it's remained ultra rare despite rumours of THOUSANDS being found in the same warehouse that the Lost Ark was stored in. My candidate would be 'You Didn't Say a Word' - incredible record!

And don't forget to tell your mate to 'splash it all over' with Brut...

Depends who it is doesn't it? I was very impressed with Lorraine Chandler, Popcorn Wylie and Eddie Holman when I saw them but other acts less so... Events like Hemsby where they try to get people from a diminishing roster of 50s acts at least demonstrate that if you do want to see original performers you better hurry up 'cos they won't be around too much longer.

Hendrix didn't come to the UK 'til 1967 so it wouldn't have been 'early sixties'. As far as i am aware there were 'nighters at the Flamingo Club from '62 onwards and there were 50s jazz events ('raves' as they were called!) that were all nighters too.

Jackie Edwards and the Chants for sure. Busty Springfield stuff - What's it Gonna be?, Dusty in Memphis. A lot of 'beat' groups released quite acceptable soul-type material - the Action, Spencer Davies Group or the Small Faces, fr'instance . A lot of UK soul is a bit 'chicken in a basket' for my tastes. And don't forget Soft Cell!!

And what about 'Hey Sha Lo Ney' by Mickey Lee Lane one wonders?

Ha! Classic! I always enjoyed Morecambe because they had that Beer Keller place where pissed-up scooter types would be serenaded by an accordion player doing his versions of various soul and reggae favourites. At least when he wasn't being interrupted every 5 mins by drunken idiots making 'announcements' like: "Ah, feggit. Feggin' scoo'er boyz, ya fugger. Fug-it!" Etc...

Big deal! I once played football with Depeche Mode then two weeks later against Chris Evans, also I went to school with John Leslie. Actually, on reflection none of this is anything to brag about!

All e-bayers should be extra wary of 'phishing' e-mails supposedly coming from them or PayPal warning about alarming situations like someone jacking into your account or similar. They're trying to get your account information so just ignore them! Always ask Ebay or PayPal to confirm they sent you the message.
