  1. Do i feel a 70s soul disco revival on the horizon?
  2. Unless a collection has a lot of niche market music (like soul, garage, rockabilly, psych, and other stuff), I tell most people that the larger the collection, the less overall it's worth. It's a different animal altogether and perhaps not a great comparison, but I know of 4 large hordes of LPs and 45s within a 2-hour radius that are full of chud music. The owners think they are sitting on a goldmine. Not.
  3. To circle back to the original article, in addition to doo-wop, there are (at least in the midwest U.S., and likely elsewhere) several genres which are basically impossible to sell. Part of this stems from the economic crash in 2008. Most general rock records (60s/70s), not Beatles or specific genres like psych, garage or rockabilly plummeted when the economy crashed. These records have been bringing 25%-50% or less of what they brought 5 years ago, and this has been further been expanded upon with the latest USPS postage rate increase in January. Also, 50s rock in my part of the world is impossible to sell. By this, I mean Elvis, Ricky Nelson and that sort of stuff. I don't even touch it when offered it. I get calls from people wanting to sell me big band, classical and 50s pop, to which I tell them there's no market and to donate it to a charity. As one woman said to me on the phone: "But they're such wonderful records." I said that may be true, but nobody wants them, and those that have them, are dying off and wanting to get rid of them.
  4. Hi Pete, I picked this one up a few years ago. There are some excellent tracks on it.
  5. I'm curious if there was a lot of unreleased material? Anyone know? Cheers.
  6. I would also add that whenever possible, try (unless it's so rare) to get records in as close to M- condition as you possibly can. They play better, look better, plus if you ever get in a pinch and have to shift any, they'll be much more appealing to others. I would also echo one of the previous posters about some really excellent sounds aren't that expensive. I just picked up a stack of mostly M- 45s last week where a bunch of them were $6 US, a few $8 and none more than $15, and they're all danceable. Cheers.
  7. Excellent tip! F] Learn to appear convincingly deaf when someone want you to play Diana Ross
  8. The lp arrived Friday, and I gave it a complete listen today. Color Him Father and another track or two good, but the album as a whole has several naff covers and some duff fillers. Great to have for this track alone. Got it for $14 U.S. all in for a EX- original.
  9. A nice little pile of mint gems were purchased recently in one go (all U.S. pressings). The Lorelei/S.T.O.P. 10. Tell him to buy a download or a reissue 45. I'm all for charity, but I would never use this tactic. I also agree with the other person that pointed out that if the stock copy is cheaper, play that. Maybe he's use this tactic enough times that it works. I used to have a guy that would buy records off of me who was always asking if I'd throw in some empty 50s/60s company sleeves with his $5 purchase. As if!
  11. Also, if you have a setup to DJ at home, try to practice with fading songs/using the mixer and headphones.
  12. Make sure you know how to operate the equipment! Thankfully on my first go, someone gave me a few good tips which I still use (and I ain't telling!). Cheers.
  13. I paid $82 for a M- copy + $4 post.
  14. After nabbing (but waiting for it to arrive in the post a M- Marlena Shaw Wade In The Water 45 this week, I just picked up this little gem from another record collector in Minneapolis in M/M- condition. Really chuffed to have this one added to the collection.
  15. @Dave, Found it. Thanks again!
  16. @Dave, Cheers. What LP is it on?
  17. Hello, I just heard this recently and really enjoyed it. I assume it's on 45? What's it going for? I did a few brief searches and didn't find one. Many thanks!
  18. I just picked up a M- copy of Wade In The Water, so this fits in nicely!
  19. @Dave, Here's the link to the record fair. It's on 27 July. https://rare-az.org/pages/exhibitors.html They have a list of record fair vendors. My favorite is John Dixon of Bendover, Inc. Cheers.
  20. Dave, Having lived in Phoenix a couple of times, the best thing I can tell you is to make sure you have a refreshing beverage in your hands at all times in the summer. It gets bloody hot. (110 degrees is 110 degrees -- even if it's a dry heat.) Zia Records used to be worth a nose about. There's a regularly scheduled record show (check recordshowsofamerica.com) there. Other stores showing up: Stinkweeds Records, Revolver Records. Looks like most others have closed. Cheers.
  21. Good grief, they don't clean any of the records? Methinks they would grade better in some cases (but maybe they're doing it to cover up scratches?) I use a soft chamois cloth I place into a container of water with a few drops of washing-up liquid in it, apply it (but being careful of the label), wipe the side dry with another cloth and flip it over. It takes all of 10 seconds.
  22. Can someone post the link to the BBC iPlayer for these? Cheers.
  23. @Stacey's Dad, my wife and I stayed at the Ambassador East fall of 2011 on a visit with my wife for an anniversary trip to Chicago after really enjoying the hotel at SoulTrip. Unfortunately, the hotel has been sold, redone (but they still have a pump room) and now is a Public Hotel. Not the same.
