FROBISHER REVIEW - 30TH OCT 2004

FROBISHER REVIEW - 30TH OCT 2004

So, having seen Steve make it through to the next phase of the X Factor, we decided to make a quick dash down to the Frobisher.

The October edition brought us those two young gents from Todmorden: Tim Brown and Ginger Taylor.

Arriving around half-nine, we found Dave Box, one of the resident DJ’s, doing the early shift. A few of the tunes he played in this hour included: Topics, Enchanters, Dynells, and a good raft of 70’s: Newcomers, Paul Thompson, Bill Harris, Charisma Band, and Channel 3’s The Sweetest Thing. That was one that Fred really enjoyed, and at the time it was played he was singing the praises of his DJ partner, by saying what a fantastic record collection he had built up over the years. Next one was the electrifying Cashmeres – What Does It Take To Win Your Love. A few versions of that have been played over the years, but I still rate the Junior Walker original as the best, and there’s a version by BJ Thomas which is also very good. Dave played the ever popular Because Of You by Jackie Wilson to a full dance floor, and then handed over to Ginger at around 10.30pm.

Ginger played a mixed bag, including a few 70’s, a bit of Motown, some oldies, and a scattering of more recent tunes. He kept the dance floor busy through the hour, playing: Carstairs, Futures, Phyllis Hyman, Joy Lovejoy, Harold Melvin, Norman Johnson, Temptations, Marvelettes, Garland Green. The highlights for me had to be Rita and the Tiaras (Classic and rare oldie), Bill Bush (dance floor packer), Buddy Miles (underplayed 70’s), and the Hamilton Movement (great tune).

Tim took over from Ginger, and his highlights were just about everything really. Vanguards, Patrinell Staton, Soul Communicators, Delegates of Soul, Bobby Rich, and Sam Dees' alternative take on Lonely For You Baby. Also, Deep Dark Secret, Dee Dee Sharp, and Frankie Beverley – Because Of My Heart on Rouser. And he played more requests than you can shake a stick at: Robert Tanner, Fluorescent Smogg, Hayes Cottons (Black Wings), Mac Staten, and, for me, Little Willie Foulk – Look Into My Heart. Tim finished off with JJ Barnes’ RicTic relic – Please let me in, leaving a perfect platform for Fred to follow on with an hour of oldies.

Dave finished it all off, keeping the crowd dancing until the end, and by that time, the drink had kicked in big style, and he managed to get me on the dance floor, shuffling about to the Ascots – Few Feet From The Gutter and Jimmy Wallace – I’ll Be Back.

As usual, the mix of music through the night catered for everyone, making it another enjoyable night. I’ll leave you in the hands of the Lager Lout for his summary.
JB

Before I start on this, I’d just like to say that in no way is this a piss-take, as I’ve known Tim for years and have always regarded him as a good friend. So, really, it’s a tribute to the excellent 60 minutes worth of music he played that night. Knowing Tim, I reckon he’ll enjoy it rather than hitting me with a law suit!

To get the gist of this, if you know that great 70’s track by Benny Hill, then you’ll see where I’m coming from::::

You can hear them old beats pound
When you’re on the stomping ground
And the clattering of those wheels of steel
As they spin round and round

Chorus:
He marched into the Frobisher
Rare Soul wrote on his chest
His name was Brownie and he was the
Finest DJ in the West

Now Brownie loves his Northern
And a bit of Modern too
Not right fussed on the all night sesh
Prefers an eight till two
The crowds were always good to him
And I mean it most sincere
That’s why Brownie gets his booking there
Same time every year

(Chorus)

Now Brownie on arrival
Made a beeline for the bar
All the way from Todmorden
Half hour in the car

He tempted us with his Lewis Clark
And his tasty Bob and Fred
And when they heard the plight of his Larry Wright
It nearly knocked ‘em dead.

They all swooned over his mega tunes
And he said if you see me right
You’ll have drum rolls in the morning
And stompers through the night
We knew once we’d sampled his first half hour
That he’d got top notch stuff to play
Thanks from all the Frobisher
You’ve made our flipping day.

They won’t forget Brownie,
‘Cause he’s the finest DJ in the West.

Look forward to seeing you next year Tim.
Cheers – The Lager Lout.

From John – I liked it lout, but you’re gonna have to get out more. I’ll agree with everything in the song, but point out that I think you’ve cheated a bit as the records mentioned in it he didn’t play that night.

Lout – OK, fair point, but he could have played ‘em all on another night. Plus I don’t have the writing talents of Holland/Dozier/Holland or Smokey Robinson.

John – Yep, yer right – get the beers in!

Pat Brady joins Soulsville Team

Further to the recent success of the Soulsville 1st Anniversary, we are pleased to announce that Pat Brady has agreed to become a resident DJ at the monthly Soulsville nights in Leeds city centre. We are also pleased to welcome John Parker (Holgate SC) as resident, and with his superb collection he adds considerbly to the strength of quality behind the decks. Pat will play the first of his monthly sets on Friday, December 3rd and then again kicking off 2005 on February 4th (No Soulsville in Jan 2005). Were also lucky to have the company of a certain Mr Brett Franklin as guest on December 3rd, playing out hot on the heels of his famous opening set at the Ducie Bridge New Century Warm-Up session on the 27th Nov. The policy will be to build on what Soulsville has achieved over the last year musically, and try to get the mix right between the much-loved, underplayed, rare and current big sounds across the 60s and 70s. If you havent been yet, expect a tight little cellar bar, with a low ceiling which adds to a cracking atmosphere as the night builds. (please see full details in events section) We look forward to seeing some of you Soul-Sourcers coming down to see us, and make sure you say hello! For further information please contact: Jamie Hartford: jamien1@btinternet.com 07739 917972 Rich Buckley: richard.buckley@granadamedia.com 07799 846629 Keep It Soulful.... Jamie&Rich

Motown Legends Weekender 2004 Thanks and dates for 2005

Grab of news/thanks from the Motown Legends Website on recent Motown Legends Weekender The Motown Legends Weekender took place at the Hemsby Holiday Centre at GREAT YARMOUTH during the weekend 29th October - 1st November (Friday to Monday) 2004 "One big party at Pontins with our Motown Legends Weekend. Top line artistes, top DJs and late bars." is how it was billed and would say its fair to say that it lived up to that 14th to 17th October 2005 are the dates for your calendar for next years event! MOTOWN LEGENDS SOUL WEEKENDER 2004 The organisers and staff at Pontins, Hemsby, Great Yarmouth would like to say a big thank you to all the people who made last weekends event such an overwhelming success. We had FIVE stunning performances over the 3 nights of the weekend. Miracles member Tee Turner got the crowd going with his opening set on Friday evening he should have sung "Sharp dressed man" ! and what a voice this guy has, watch out for his solo CD release. The Velvelettes were "really saying something" with their set on Friday evening getting the crowd of 1,300 people dancing and swaying to their classic Motown tune's. UK Motown had released their new compilation CD to coincide with their UK visit. Well worth checking out. The Miracles were absolutely superb on the Saturday evening and with Sidney taking Smokey Robinson's lead vocal part if you closed your eyes you were taken back 30 or 40 years to the Heyday of Motown's golden era. Tee, Dave and original member bobby Rogers kept the audience spell bound after they sang hit after hit. Again immaculately dressed and moving on the stage in harmony a truly wonderful performance. On to Sunday night and Special guest original Crystals member Lala Brooks joined with our main man Richie Pitts to sing an outstanding set of classic soul tunes. For me the outstanding "Show and tell" and duet with Lala on "Back together again" were show stoppers. A radio show for BBC Radio 2 was recorded live in the Queen Vic by broadcaster Bob McClure "The Lost&Found show" , we will let you know when that is going to be on air, All in all a great weekend, we are coming back to great Yarmouth in 2005 over the weekend of 14th to 17th October and you can reserve your place's now either by booking on line at www.pontins.com or telephone 0870 604 5606 from http://www.soul-weekenders.co.uk

Born in Baltimore MD Billy moved to Brooklyn as a young child Where he was later to meet the other members of The Invitations. He sang baritone on the all the classic Invitations records including “What’s wrong with you baby” and “Skiing in the snow” and on the later Silver Blue recordings “They say the girls crazy” & “Look on the good side”
Billy toured with the Invitations in the UK during the mid 1960’s and was at the forefront of U.S. Soul Groups making the trip across the Atlantic to appear at clubs like The Golden Torch and The Twisted Wheel. Valerie Simpson - The Collection (CD release)

Motown owes much to Valerie Simpson. In the late 60s, she and husband Nickolas Ashford penned "Aint No Mountain High Enough" and other glorious classics that turned Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell into pops most beautiful double act. They went on to achieve greater distinction for a series of excellent compositions, often in partnership with "Joshie" Jo Armstead. Among the many artists to record the teams songs were Ray Charles, Maxine Brown and Chuck Jackson and the solo Diana Ross. So this raft of Simpsons own recordings - combining her 1971 debut album on Tamla, Exposed, with 1972s follow-up, Valerie Simpson - makes for fascinating, uplifting listening. Gospel-infused soul prevails, especially on the opener, "I Dont Need No Help". Its a cappella intro sounds like a cry of freedom from the 25-year-old, already pigeonholed by Motown solely as a writer. Sweet melodies, tender lyrics and a beautiful climax sign this as one of the albums eighteen Ashford and Simpson compositions. The two went on to cast the 1984 floor-filler "Solid", and that tracks slick sound is foretold in The Collections shimmering production. Simpsons voice isnt up there with say Aretha or Brenda but its still authentically musical and demands to be heard. For the Bronx-born singer, love conquers all: on slowies like "Back To Nowhere" and "World Without Sunlight", Simpson adores her man. On "There Is A God" and others, she lauds the Lord. Ballads and mid-tempo arrangements are order of the day, but there are also uptempo tracks. "Sinner Man "is a Tamla tornado of sitars, trumpets, bongos and guitars. A cover of "We Can Work It Out" has a slow-blues opening, a trippy mid-section and a brass-fuelled finale. "Drink The Wine" is an irresistible force, evoking primetime Gladys Knight and The Pips. Motowns house band, the Funk Brothers, provides a perfect pulse here and throughout. ------------------------------------ Valerie Simpsons "The Collection" on Universal is out now in the US (available on Import through www.amazon.com)
