Sad News : William Morris - Invitations RIP
I have just received news that original member of The Invitations William “Billy” Morris died last week age 66 after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Baltimore MD Billy moved to Brooklyn as a young child Where he was later to meet the other members of The Invitations. He sang baritone on the all the classic Invitations records including “What’s wrong with you baby” and “Skiing in the snow” and on the later Silver Blue recordings “They say the girls crazy” & “Look on the good side”
Billy toured with the Invitations in the UK during the mid 1960’s and was at the forefront of U.S. Soul Groups making the trip across the Atlantic to appear at clubs like The Golden Torch and The Twisted Wheel. The funeral will take place today (Monday 15th Nov.) in Brooklyn N Y our thoughts are with Billy’s family especially his wife Zan.

Etta still has it goin' on
Etta James may be 66 years old. Her two sons who tour in her Roots band may boss her around some, and she may mix a few more ballads into her show than she did in her wilder youth. However, the reigning empress of rhythm and blues has still got it goin on. James brings a voice more powerful than whole horn sections, a musical command honed by 60 years in the business, and an attitude guaranteed to make the uninitiated blush. With that length of service, plenty of performers would be content to let their classic records do their work, but James is still busy touring and recording.
Etta, born Jamesette Hawkins in 1938, began performing with a church choir as a child in Los Angeles, and was discovered when she was 14 by band leader Johnny Otis. Her first recording in 1955 was a reply to Hank Ballard & the Midnighters’ “Annie” but "Roll With Me Henry" was considered too suggestive and re-titled "The Wallflower." By 1960 she had signed with Chess Records in Chicago. James took her inspiration from powerful male vocalists - John "Guitar" Watson and Ray Charles. As a child she had a male vocal teacher. "He said, `You might be little but you got to push those words you sing, not from your throat but from your stomach, " she said. She followed that advice and her powerful voice has carried her through a prolific musical career that included a string of hits that made the R&B Top 10 in the 1960s and crossed over to the pop charts as well. Despite hard times, including a battle with heroin addiction, James continued recording and performing for the next three decades.
She has been honoured with 12 W.C. Handy awards, the top honour of the blues music industry, and two Grammys, one for lifetime achievement bestowed in 2003. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. But her soulful ballads that raced up the charts in the 60s - "At Last," "All I Could Do Was Cry," "Dont Cry Baby" - only reveal a corner of James talent. Let loose, she gets a groove going that will drag you out of your seat, whether shes covering the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic "Born on the Bayou" or breathing fresh life into the Rolling Stones "Miss You." Her most recent album "Blues to the Bone" reaches way back to blues classics from John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed and Robert Johnson. However, James took some heat when she chose to record “gutbucket songs” such as "Driving Wheel," "You Shook Me" and "Crawling Kingsnake." In response, she said - "I always wanted to do those songs, and Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton really turned on the motor and brought the blues back," she said.
Martin Scorseses recent PBS documentary on the blues also inspired her, she said. Musically, James has never been afraid to roam. Shes tackled jazz standards. She nailed hip-hop with "Get Funky" on her "Stickin to My Guns" album. She even makes Bob Dylan groove, recording "You Gotta Serve Somebody" on her "Matriarch of the Blues" CD. Currently, James is working on a new album whose working title is "Lush Life," a song made famous by Nat King Cole. More info at: www.etta-james.com

Georgia Soul - Overflowing with ......
This site has been up in the Reference Section Soul Source links section for a fair while nowand at the time was a worthy addition as was impressed by the amount of info and the way it was delivered. Unfortunately with the amount of quality soul related web sites it means that sometimes there is just not enough hours in a day to get round all the quality ones regularly. Often its not till something specfic actually drags you to the site (in this case the "delphi" label listing ) that you catch up with fresh content and are reminded what a worthwhile site it is All listings are easily navigated, one click away from the home page index, plus other content such as an lengthy article by Brian Proust, a label gallery which contains over 100 plus scans, a review section featuring reviews of related cds, other soul website links and more
A main requirement of any worthwhile site is that it is updated regular, and in this case it is and its very regular almost weekly, all the update details are listed, as well, so if a regular visitor you can get to the fresh meat quick and easy. The only minor criticism (and I stress the word minor) is the use of anti-right mouse click script ( cant really see the point of this nowadays, in old days it may have protected content, but nowadays doesnt really do much protecting and does affect the user friendly feel of site. Get rid would be my shout)
Final view: It was a worthy entry in the weblinks reference section on Soul Source here, and now its a .... updated worthy entry! Check it out recommended!
site trivia: Always after news of fresh or updated similar sites such as this and sure so are many other soul fans, so any pas ons of info be more than welcome

Plinston Nov 5th Event Overview
Considering that we were expecting only around 100 in, due to it being Bonfire night and the Hembsy Rally being on, we were more than pleased to welcome 260 through the doors.
All of whom were up for dancing from the start. The night was, in the opinion of many that I spoke to on the night and who have phoned and emailed me since, one of the best yet (so if you werent there you missed a belting one!)
The atmosphere was electric, the people great and the music outstanding with the across-the-board policy working well to get even the most sore feet grooving.Guests Sean Chapman and Dave Halsall did fantastic sets in The Ghetto! and Sean also in the Main Hall where a sea of dancers greeted his every selection. It says something for Sean when he managed to keep the loyal Ghetto Crew upstair with him whilst Soul Sam was ripping up the dance floor in the Main Hall. (I am sure Sean will post his own comments on the night here when he gets back from Italy!)
Mr Halsall surprised many with an excellent selection of the great and the good in Modern Soul and has earned a deserved return trip to what many consider one of the best modern rooms in the South.Needless to say Taffy, Nathan and Soul Sam delivered their usual quality sets which saw, as always, The Ghetto! grooving as only they can. DArcy in particular was a very happy and VERY sweaty man by the close :-)In the Main Hall the atmosphere was buzzing and again an across the board policy of oldies, newies etc went down well with the Soulful and the dancefloor groaned under the weight of slipping and sliding leather soled feet. Fingers and Hammie were greeted with the usual warm embrace by the Plinston regulars, Soul Sam (making another venture into the main room from The Ghetto!) played one of the best sets he has done, according to many, and as stated Sean Chapman really brought the house down, even despite his dubious dancing and obviously doddgy T-shirt choice!!!!! I finished the last hour with a mix of classic oldies, quality 70s and a few sixties newies and ending the night with Im On My Way to a handclapping acomplment from those still with enough energy to so so.
The Mojo Room saw busy action all night and I last got a chance to spin my R&B selection in there to an apprecitive crowd. At this rate we may even convert Soul Sam...or maybe not :-)))))In short, a great night and roll on January 14th with Ginger, Mischief and Dave Flemming guesting...be there or miss out on one of the Souths best nights!
TheBigO
* So many fun things to report but will just note a few here:
Soul Sam in a red stetson hat at the end in The Ghetto! spinning The Whole Damm Worlds Going Crazy and dedicating it to the Us election; Sean Chapman mincing, that is the only word we can use, all night to the Toons, Taffy standing with a handbag outside the Ladies trying to look OK with it; the girls outside having a cigarette and trying not to look like naughty schoolkids; Tim Brown getting really p***ed off at the number of people telling him that the rare Constelations track he reviewed was an old Plinston spin; myself and Sean being caught in some very dubious poses (see photos elsewhere)...the list is endless so feel free to add

Sad news Ray Charles
Just seen on BT homepage that Ray Charles has passed away. Another Legend leaves us.
Music icon Ray Charles dies
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ray Charles, who overcame childhood poverty, blindness and heroin addiction to help create soul music and become one of Americas most beloved singers, has died at the age of 73 after a long fight with liver disease, his spokesman says.
Charles died at 11:35 a.m. on Thursday at his Beverly Hills home, the singers longtime publicist Jerry Digney said. Family members and co-workers of the legendary entertainer were with him when he died.
In one of his last public appearances, the singer-songwriter turned up in a motorised wheelchair for a ceremony in April conferring historic-building status on his longtime recording complex in a rundown part of Los Angeles.
Visibly frail, his voice reduced to a whisper, Charles demeanour then was a far cry from the wildly enthusiastic performer known to millions of fans for more than half a century.
A prolific musician, Charles has been off the road for almost a year so that he could undergo a hip replacement. Unspecified complications forced him to scrap plans to resume touring with a performance in New York last month.
Charles, a pioneer of soul music whose biggest hits include "Georgia on My Mind" and "Hit the Road Jack", was a multiple Grammy winner who had been blind since the age of 6.
While known as "The Genius of Soul", Charles music included standards, R&B, country pop and jazz.
More Internet Soul related thievery
Many people will be aware that there are several soul fans, who go round photographing going ons at soul events. These photgraphers often put in a lot of time and effort taking these photos, and of course there are all the expenses of doing this such as travel etc that has to be covered.
Obvisouly many soul fans are interested in seeing these photos so many authors do allow them to be diplayed via web sites free of charge. And sure that many appreciate this and are grateful to then for allowing this to happen
Now should be no problem with any of the above, yeah? Well there is actually, had word that yet again someone is more than happy to rip off other soul fans. work, time and effort. It seems that photos put on public display by one of the best known scene photographers Dave Leedham are being downloaded, printed off, then laminated and sold on to soul fans.
Now while copyright law can be a bit grey on subject of images and selling on, but surely no one can think that they had any right o do this. The authors of these photois are often well known and respected and part of todays soul scene.
For someone to then come along , download them, print them out, laminate and then sell them on is yet another example of just what w******s are out there.
Crap like this is just taking the **** and is pure thievery.
if on web or out and about do spot likes of this going on please pass on details
On This Day - A post by Karen
Its a v.sad day. Ive had many comments over the year saying how much he is missed, how things dont seem the same without him, and how much he was admired and also many from people not realising how much he did for our scene. HOW TRUE.
I would personally like to say a big thanks to many for being there for me - I think they all know who they are - if I list them - be a long list! Without them I dont know where Id be. Even if you werent fortunate enough to know Randy or have only heard of him, Soulgate will show you what sort of person he was. I remember telling him how some thought of him as their hero - he looked bemused and just said wish I was your hero! Of course he was! But he was a hero to so many others too. He might be gone from here, but he is certainly not forgotten and never will be - as so many of us will keep his memory alive.
Randy - still missing you, Karen B x

Over the years she had sung on many albums including Michael Boltons Soul Provider, Billy Prestons Its My Pleasure and Quincy Jones Back On The Block. July Newletter part 3- All things dmsc
Here we go, another view on dmsc going ons, first thanks to all who showed last Friday at the Springfield. All feedback from main room was it was a good one.
friday 09 July 2004 - Natural born Monkey
This event marked the two year point of DMSC, as such were hoping for a cracking nite with best of last two years. however think fair to say while main room was up to usual standard sound wise and as always at the end of the night had the usual feedback, overall this didnt happen.
Turning up at springfield led us to the first (and not the last problem of the nite) someone had eaten half the dancefloor, turns out a overnite leak had caused damage to a third of the floor, which had been covered with carpet. With a bit of "changing rooms" carpet moving action, did manage to reclaim a bit more of the floor but was fair bit reduced. Unavoidable and apoligies go out.
main room
Onto main room, numbers down a fair bit, clashes with other events, the fact it was on a friday, reasons perhaps. Due to amount of events now at stage where avoiding any clash with similar or close by events is impossible. Such is life, as we feel we are the only ones in this part of the world offering what we do, have to just shrug and crack on
Dj wise, running order went like this - Steve T/Mike h, Mark Speakman, Keith Williams, Andy Killick, Robbo, Steve T - had a extra hour compared to last one due to later circunstances, and as the nite finished had the normal feedback from both regulars and new discoverers. Thanks to all guests
Playlists hopefully should follow, thanks to all djs -
usual "all over the place mode" dealing with going ons (see below) so unfortuantely missed a fair bit,
Mark Keith and Andy have said will send playlists so just a few odd hazy memoreies , George Jackson - I dont have.. , Utopias, Parasians - Twinkle little star, Rees Flores -Tell It to My heart, being just 4 quick ones, never realised that Andy Killicks Lou Pride cover was one Shifty used to play till Nick told us
all era room
The normal line up less Phil Blacknel who couldnt make it, Pete Bangor, Chico were joined by Steve t, after the last one were hoping numbers would approve. Unfortunately due to the low numbers the hotel requested that we close early
as said apoligies to nite on all those who attended for this room, and all the djs, explained reasons and the run up to it on the nite,
final view , due to a email recieved felt a need to bash out the full story - apoligies if of no interest or too dep but due to email thought needed to put it down
At 1000 the management of the hotel asked me to close the second room, I asked them why and they said, due to the hotel being so busy they had to use the second room for breakfast the next day and thus had to set it up. They had staff waiting to set it up. Due to the numbers using the second room, and fact they had staff waiting for the sole purpose of setting up the second room, in order to save paying staff up to 1am they were asking if possible to close it. I wasnt happy about this after discussion we agreed to look at situation again at 1030.
At 1030 the numbers hadnt improved, I suggested various work arounds which included us setting it up, however none were viable.I asked the views of co-promoter Steve T, the djs from the all era room, I then made the decision to close it as requested by the hotel management.
Understand that there were people not happy about this and all who complained were offered their money back. While this was far from ideal and not happy with it myself one bit, it was felt this decision was best for the event. I could have said "no way", however felt that this would have damaged the good working relationship we had with the hotel and damaged the event and could have led to us no longer using this venue. In past a flexiable approach has worked both ways and while the second room future is now being decided, if had insisted it stayed open am sure that in future it would no longer have been available to us. It was far from ideal espically after time and effort the djs put in.
Thats what and how it occured, far from ideal and am first to admit it however hopefully even if you do not agree with decision on this matter, by reading this are at least aware of the facts and my thinking behind the decision.
crowd and laughs
somehow learnt how to differate between a authentic 60s denim jacket and a replica
digital camera was took out of retirement and failed to work
Crowd wise, good as alwasy to meet up with many regulars, Nick G won the "Nick brown" "Out of the blue" award, was good to catch up with member 001, Graham and Liz deserve a mention, as first time to say thanks to both for recent hospitality. Nods to all rest, and thanks for showing up. Also good to see fair few fresh faces and hear their feedback
Final View
As always thanks to all djs - always check that they all enjoyed doing it and all did, and great feedback on all spots
half a dancefloor gone missing, overnight leaking roof, numbers down, major problems with all era room, clashes with events, occcurances jacking me off before hand.........
and still despite all this at end of nite had the now usual feedback,
(and as far as i was concerned) still went home with that monkey glow, after two years it onwards and upwards
Saturday 04 Sep is the next one - 100% booked
details soonest
transport will be sorted out if there is a demand for back and forth to keele niter
Future of Monkey
simple as far as am concerned back to the old **** off attitude.
dj bookings - in past we had two top class regulars Andy Rix and Rob Thomas - due to Andy Rix taking a break from dj-ing this had to change -
our policy is 3 main spots
- 1 top guest/monkey dj,
- 1 rotating regular Andy Killick or Ritchie Andrew,
- 1 monkey dj member spot
and myself and Steve and others filling in gaps
we are compling a list of long term future monkey djs and future dates
in past we had likes of Carl Willingham, Mick H, Bob Hinsley,Jumping Joan, Chic, Chico, Mark Speakman, Kev Spittle, Robbo, Colin Wood, Anne A, Ritchie Andrew, Keith Williams Andy Killick, Johnny Jones, Steve Jenks
all have walked thru door as punters and of course havent forgot that there are even more djs in the regular crowd and hopefully be getting chace to hear them soon
Along with guests such as
Keith Money, Ion, John Weston, Andy Dyson, Dave Rimmer, Dave Thorley, Brian Ellis,
(apoligies if missed anyone its getting late)
and then throw in the policy of quailty rare soul, we like to think are offering a selection and variety of djs and quality rare soul that is unmatched round this part of the world. This is simply what we are going to continue...
