Black Lion in Manchester: Zero Tolerence Plays, review and more -Shirley

The promoters of The Lime Street at Duckinfield made a few changes to their monthly soul night in May. Firstly the promoters themselves were rearranged the contacts now being Sid Jones, John Purvis & Joan Livesey the resident DJ line-up was re-vamped slightly to the format above, what else, oh yes they moved from Duckinfield to that Great Northern Soul Metropolis of the North West, Manchester.
Review of the new soul night at the Black Lion in Manchester.
New Venue Alert 08/05/04 - ZTSC Black Lion Hotel, Manchester
Guest DJ: Carl Willingham
Residents: Eddie Engel, Jumpin’ Joan, Alex Jones, Sid Jones, Colin Wood
The promoters of The Lime Street at Duckinfield made a few changes to their monthly soul night in May. Firstly the promoters themselves were rearranged the contacts now being Sid Jones, John Purvis & Joan Livesey the resident DJ line-up was re-vamped slightly to the format above, what else, oh yes they moved from Duckinfield to that Great Northern Soul Metropolis of the North West, Manchester. They also decided to give the whole set up a catchy name Z.T.S.C.!!!! more on that later.
So firstly the venue, situated in a room over the Black Lion Hotel at the corner of Chapel Street and Blackfriar Road in Manchester. The room has a bar at one end and a small raised stage area at the other whilst in between there is ample seating (no wise cracks about my ample ar**e thank you very much) and a central dancefloor, size and capacity? well let’s just say that the room is on the bijou side and leave it at that, all adds to the ambiance don’t cha think Records on decks about 8.00 ‘til late.
Now what does that acronym ZTSC mean well for those less anorakky soulies, oops sorry I mean not as well informed or (more likely) those soulies who couldn’t give two hoots about the vernacular of the record collector, ZTSC apparently refers to the letters & numbers found on vinyl. This code reveals to those in the know all manner of information such as the year of pressing, the records origins, the location of the pressing plant, the contents of the record plant workers sandwiches…….blah, blah, blah…… don’t know ‘bout you but I tend to look for more obvious and easier clues like the ones usually to be found on the bit of paper stuck onto the centre of the vinyl. Artist and title are usually enough for me and I gotta say I find this method of identifying a record much easier on the old brain cells, not to mention the old eyes )) hmm!!
I can sense some of you may be losing the will to live with all this inane banter about ZTSC markings still I’ve managed to get in five references to ZTSC, (six and counting ))) It’s called subliminal advertising I think and if this crude tactic gets any of you to come and have a look see at what this soul night is all about it’ll have been worth it. Quite a few soulies turned out for the ZTSC’’s (still counting) inaugural event, and of these soulies many had travelled a fair distance, some had made the journey from Mansfield and one soulie had even ventured from as far away as Cambridge.
Now what other music could fire up emotions to such a degree that they lead to soulies traversing the country every weekend for just one night out? I know when I mention our travels to “normal people” they consider Col & I to be slightly crazy, and not just for the distances we can go over any given weekend to get to and from a soul night, I’ve also noticed “normal people” don’t seem to understand how passionate we soulies are about the whole scene or is it just me that is actually crazy ))
Enough musings, back to the job in hand. What is the relevance of ZTSC and what does it mean? Well it simply stands for Zero Tolerance Soul Club, clever stuff eh, eh?!!!! ) And now I’ve revealed the acronym, the music policy has probably become a little clearer, yup that’s right the music policy is that there is no music policy, it’s really all about unashamed out’n’out across the board great Northern Soul of the lesser played variety. It’s the sort of soul night where DJs are DJs and soulies are appreciative. So for those of you who would like to know if the DJs delivered a good cross section of spanking toons John, Dawn & I managed to jot down a few toons played so here are the playlists – apologies in advance for any omissions, errors or mis-credits on the list, it’s bad enough trying to work out what I wrote down without the added fun of deciphering someone else’s notes especially at a later date. (there now I think that’s the blame for any inaccuracies nicely shifted on to John & Dawn )))

A Tale of Two Citys -D Troit Comes to Manchester

Have been passed on word of a upcoming exhibition coming from US to Manchester soon, The exhibition originated at Gigantic Artspace, New York, and has been expanded for Urbis, Manchester. D Troit Curated By Trevor Schoonmaker Thursday 20 May to Sunday 18 July, 2004

The press release is below Website has more info, pics etc at http://www.urbis.org.uk/levelone.asp?page=134

D Troit Curated By Trevor Schoonmaker

Thursday 20 May to Sunday 18 July, 2004 at Urbis, Manchester.

D Troit is an exhibition that features ‘downloads’ of contemporary art, film and music from ten artists and one music journalist to examine the unique creative culture of the American mid-west city known as ‘Motown’, ‘The Motor City’, ‘Detroit Rock City’, ‘Techno City’ or simply ‘The D’.

D Troit makes powerful connections between the music, politics and social history of Detroit, featuring video, photography, illustration, contemporary visual art, paintings, lightboxes and an extensive music soundtrack, accessed through Apple iPods in one of the UK’s first uses of this new technology as an exhibition medium, to explore the tragic degeneration and the creative regeneration of Detroit. Ten artists and a music journalist use their connections to the city to make powerful personal and didactic statements about Detroit.

In the first half of the twentieth century, Detroit was the very model of the modern industrial city, a booming metropolis drawing a new labour force of poor southerners (often black) and immigrants in search of a good paying jobs in the city’s automotive industry. The brutal combination of ‘white flight’ from the city to the suburbs beginning in the 1950s, which further escalated after the 1967 race riots, when 43 people died, 1189 were injured and over 7000 people were arrested, the recession of the 1970s and the cutbacks in the automobile industry saw the decline of Detroit. Over that period, Detroit was transformed from a thriving city to an architectural shell of desolation and decay, as seen in Eminem’s film 8 Mile.

At the same time, Detroit is the birth place of some of the most exciting music being created anywhere in the world – the city is synonymous with a vast array of musical genres from the Blues, RnB, Berry Gordy’s Motown sound, punk, garage, rock, funk, techno, house and now, the sound of the blues-influenced White Stripes as well as a whole host of new independent bands like The Von Bondies and The Detroit Cobras.

D Troit features a 20 hour-long homage to Detroit’s musical heritage, specially created by expatriate Detroiter, the music journalist, Mike Rubin. Having written for Spin, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, GQ, The Village Voice, Rubin co-edited Motorbooty, the Detroit based independently published satirical journal described as ‘the only good fanzine in America’ and ‘the spy of the rock world’. Rubin’s epic journey through the rich archives of music with the ‘Made in Detroit’ brand features tracks from John Lee Hooker; Motown artists like Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye; Aretha Franklin; The Stooges; Iggy Pop; MC5; Parliament; Funkadelic; Eminem; Kid Rock; The White Stripes; The Detroit Cobras right through to minimalist techno artists like Derrick May, Jeff Mills and Plastikman.

To complement the exhibition, displayed on the ground floor project space, Urbis has also commissioned a video project by DJ Elliot Eastwick, exploring the historical and contemporary musical influence of Detroit through a series of live interviews with British musicians, producers and DJs Elliot Eastwick comments, From cottonopolis to motor city, Manchester and Detroit are forever twinned in the eyes of Music lovers, my documentary film looks at the influences both cities musician’s have had on one another D Troit is curated by Trevor Schoonmaker.

The exhibition originated at Gigantic Artspace (GAS), New York, and has been expanded for Urbis, Manchester. The exhibition proved hugely popular with audiences, many new to visual art who were fascinated by the show’s musical credentials, and its opening party attracted the likes of David Byrne, founder of Talking Heads and Lee Renaldo of Sonic Youth. D Troit features the following artists: Susan Cook: Video montage of family home movies and 1967 race riot footage examines societal ambivalence and expectations and how the past, both real and subliminal, affect the present. Doug Coombe: current rocker and music photographer exhibits his haunting photographs from the off-limits interiors of the vast abandoned architecture from Detroit. Mark Dancey: Former rocker in the Detroit band, Big Chief and the co-founder of the influential underground culture and music fanzine, Motorbooty exhibits his celebrated satirical illustrations.

Andrew Dosunmu: accomplished music video director exhibits Hot Irons, a poignant documentary about the world of African-American hairstyling, as explained by five Detroit hairdressers in preparation for the "Hair Wars" convention. Tyree Guyton: Work from the Heidelberg Project, a community revitalization art installation, which has drawn international attention to the plight of Detroits forgotten neighbourhoods. Kenjji: Drawings from the Afro-Futuristic WitchDoctor comic of black empowerment, a work for the urban disenfranchised.

Kenjii is also well known for his album illustrations for Planet E Records. Thom Klepach: Lightboxes investigate the beauty of Detroits culture despite rampant corruption, discrimination and environmental degradation in the urban centre. Kyong Park: Video project narrates the unofficial history of Detroit over the last 50 years: urban clashes between the inner city emptiness and suburban bliss, and the struggles of grass-root activism against the collusion of political and industrial controls. Mark Powell: Mysteriously striking spur of the moment photographic and short video portraits of the people of downtown Detroit. Thomas Rapai: Paintings of eerily isolated motels engage the quotidian images of middle America and embody the fallout of Detroits utopian ideal and the modern automobile industry. Mike Rubin: Music journalist and editor of Motorbooty compiled a historical overview of the finest Detroit area music of the last fifty years. Entitled 313 Jukebox, the sound installation totals 14 CDs and nearly 20 hours worth of music.

Trevor Schoonmaker: Brooklyn based independent curator and co-founder of the art-consulting agency, Associated Projects - www.associatedprojects.com. Schoonmaker most recently curated Black President: The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2003). Black President is currently on view at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and will travel to the Barbican Art Gallery in London (September, 2004) Elliott Eastwick: Elliot Eastwick started out as a glass collector in 1991 at Manchester’s Hacienda, moving on to be a DJ there. He developed the club nights Yellow with Dave Haslam and Hard Times plus he’s played at Gatecrasher,The End and in South Africa, Serbia, New Zealand, USA, Moscow, Chile and Hull. He writes for radio, TV and journalistic credits include Mixmag, Jockey Slut and Muzik. TV credits include This is Music (ITV) and Faking It (Channel 4) and various shows for BBC3. He co-founded the label, Paperecordings.

As a producer/remixer, he has worked with Underworld, Moloko, The Beloved, Twisted Nerve and Wall of Sound amongst others. Elliot also has the dubious honour of playing the last ever record at the Hacienda.

NORTHERN SOUL @ THE PLINSTON! - MAY 7TH REPORT

Thought Id take the time to write what I hope will judged a fair report on last nights event, having recieved feedback from around 30 or so members, and to answer the questiosn that were raised. The turnout was approx 400 and The Ghetto! was superb, rammed to capacity (and beyond!), a fantastic atmosphere and a truly BANGING night had by all. The choice of music was out of this world, with Taffy, Nathan and in particular Soul Sam, Arthur Fenn and Dave Welding doing blinding spots. The Mojo Room saw its dancefloor busier than ever before and again a good cross section of toons was well recieved by all who ventured into The Little Room With The Big Sound. Now, onto the Main Hall, which according to the feedback was really only 50/50 recieved due to the catalogue of problems we had on the night, which I will try and address all the questions raised now. It started off great and looked set to be as blinding as The Ghetto! but we were hit by a number of sound problems in a row: deck channels going down on us meaning having to resort to the standy-by mode with slightly less output, a mixing deck that decided AT THE SAME MOMENT to go down on us causing the drop in sound quality we experienced thoughout Arthur and Daves sets (that tinny sound in case you were wondering) and a number of smaller problems that we did get sorted after time.

To be honest it was a chance in a million that all 5 things would occur on the same night at the same time but it did and our apologises for that. The Security were dealing with an incident outside in one of the neighbouring car parks and hence the reason why we had a problem with spillage not being mopped up and dealt with as quickly as it should have been. We had even invested in a new techno way of absorbing and drying out spillage quickly which we didnt get a chance to try out.

So, in short, in the Main Hall we were hit by a number of seperate problems that in themselves would have been dealt with quickly and no-one would have been the wiser but due to them all occuring either at the same time or in quick succession meant that it did cause us problems. So, to reassure those that have called us and to all members and friends alike, we will be having a meeting with the Plinston management this week to sort out a more rapid response to spillage, upgrade the sound system to eliminate any potential future problems as experienced last night and to get the club back on the right track again. Our sincere apologises to any members whose enjoyment was tempered by events and we hope that this one-off clitch in the usual smooth running of the Plinston will not be held against us and that we may welcome everyone back on July 2nd to a Main Hall free of problems. With all that said we have recieved many calls and emails from people saying what a great night they had and just how great The Ghetto! was and we are grateful for the calls of support and understanding.

Any comments are always greatfully recieved, not just binned!!!, and can be sent marked for the attention of: TheBigO at nh6tsmafia@aol.com.

NEWS IF TRAVELLING TO THE PLINSTON!

Seems my posting worked then as weve gone through almost 200 tickets in less than a few days! Looks set to be another great night so if you are travelling PLEASE get a ticket from the Box Office (01462-672003) or reserve one from us at the usual contact address to avoid having to wait to get in or, worse, being turned away. We are very pleased to have our special guests joining us for this the 2nd Plinston of 2004: The Dome supremo and owner of tasty suits Mr Alan Handsome Handscombe who will be gracing the decks both in The Main Hall and The Mojo Room and spinning some of his little beauties that have got them grooving at the Tuffnel Park venue over the past few years; Arthur Fenn needs no introduction to most and will be in both the Main Hall, meaning Soul Sam will only be in The Ghetto! for this night, as well as The Ghetto! and a varied and exciting selection of tip top toons is expected; finally Mr Dave Welding is the Midlands best kept secret as far as we are concerned and should surprise a lot of people in both the Main Hall and The Ghetto! with his knowledge and collection that he has amassed over the last 30+ years on the scene. Dave has turned both Taff and myself, and countless other name DJs, on to some blinding obscure and not-so-obscure gems and so we are pleased that we have been able to give him the wider exposure he deserves and thus be able to doth our cap in his direction - a genuine guy and a tip-top soul boy. Of course The usual Suspects will be behind the decks as always and Keith Hammond and others will be there to help you part with your hard earned readies via the medium of merchandise :-) Probably my last post before the event so have a great weekend all and see ya next Friday for the usual Happy People Party that is the Plinston :-)

Going Green - A review plus by John Pugh

Thanks again to John for giving us the ok to pass on one of his reviews, which was originally pushed out on the soul talk email list.
Going Green - A review plus by John Pugh
Over time newly discovered tunes, or their nearly cousins, those inspired revivals of some forgotten oldie or former three spin wonder appear, and are taken to the hearts (and dancing feet) of our scene. They are at the most basic level, the very lifeblood of our scene.
These tunes have two basic routes to Niter glory. Either they come through by virtue of being in the hands of the right DJ, or they build slowly from the soul nite scene, sometimes taking a couple of spins, other times taking maybe five years of repeated playing. Of course there are always exceptions to this but they are few and far between.

I can't speak with any real authority on other regions but in our part of the world we have an overlapping track record going back to the early years, of clubs who are either totally dedicated to the cause of finding and breaking, or those who did so less aggressively, but still made a valuable contribution (We also have developed in the last twenty odd years an equally obsessive nostalgia circuit, but let's not go there !)
Every soul fan knows that wonderful, almost religious, experience of being grabbed by a new tune. The particular shade of soul is irrelevant. The fact is that when it hits you, it hits you in a way like nothing else does, and is something a bunch of us have talked about for so long we all know our parts of the conversation better than a West End actor knows their lines. We're told it's the same as the high religious fanatics get, an adjustment to brain chemistry, but felt somewhere approximately three feet lower. I don't know who first coined the phrase " a ' bit of skin' tune", but what they were referring to was how, for some strange reason, some men feel this pleasurable feeling in the region of their perineum, the tissue that occupies the space between ' front and rear outlets ' for want of a better expression I've no idea if women get this, those female soul addicts I've asked have always given me a blank look, or worse. The feeling isn't reserved for purely new tunes, just great ones, but it's definitely at it's strongest with the first few hearings or when you haven't heard it for ages. It's only enemy seems to be familiarity, and probably explains why some of us get really angry when a former 'tingler gets revitalised and then played to death. One of my old tinglers was the Young Brothers. In it's hey day for me it was equivalent to applying a nine volt shock to the sensitive region, but a few months back the luck of the draw meant we heard it every time we went out for months on the trot.
Now it's like getting up in the morning and finding your cars battery is flat. The sparks have all gone, but don't despair people  because like some batteries, if left alone for a while they seem to find a small charge again. It's never like it was, but it's enough to notice.
Sorry, wandered off the point of the posting, again. Friday nite saw our
latest incarnation of the chase. Currently held at The Green in Darlaston,
it follows in the long line of local legendary clubs like The Wheatsheaf in
Walsall and The Wagon & Horses in Wolves etc, and in terms of profile takes
up where the Cross Keys in Hednesford left off.
Sometimes you come across a tune you think fits the bill. Your best efforts
lead you to believe that it's a virtual unknown. Now comes the hard part.
You're obviously impressed enough with it, but is it instant enough to drop
into a set at a major venue ?
There's no real way of knowing until you hear it through a big system for
the first time. At home I've tried many a time muting the speakers and
lamping up the volume through the headphones, which seems to be the nearest
type of sound that replicates a venue, but even that is a poor excuse. We
all have things which we love at home that just don't sound right in a club,
and vice versa. So what do you do ? In most cases you either bite the bullet
and play it at the first opportunity, or carry it around for months in your
box waiting for the right nite, the right crowd, etc.

This is where venues like The Green really come into their own. They are if
you like " the third way ". Sometimes referred to as collectors clubs, or
more slanderously as chin strokers societies, they offer you a chance to try
out these sounds to an audience not chomping at the bit for handbag Oldies
and youth club sub disco fodder. The promoters of The Green actively pursue
the policy of " Play the tunes here that you don't play elsewhere ", which
can mean digging out that rare gem that you always mean to play that gets
lost amongst all the requests for today's popular sounds that fill the
floor. Equally it can mean it's a near perfect platform for that B side
you've always thought deserved some attention, or an album track that gets
cruelly ignored because of our love of the 7" single. As you're reading this
last couple of sentences I'm guessing that for some folk certain tunes are
jumping to the forefront of your brain, potential choices you'd like to try
on the deck.
If they are, the good news is that unlike the more formal " gotta get 'em
dancing " clubs, the route to dj'ing at The Green is quite open. They even
put it on the flyers, saying if you think you've got something worth sharing
with the rest of us just come down and have a word with Woody & Lou. If they
agree you'll find pretty soon after you'll be given a chance. Considering
how many folk pointlessly pester the promoters of the major venues for
spots, I'm staggered at how few folk can see that they'd be much better
spending their time building a reputation through clubs like The Green.
After all most good promoters are much more impressed with word of mouth
recommendations from folk they trust based on actual recent sets, or maybe
I'm wrong ?
Two things I feel I ought to mention. Clubs like this are always on the
borderline of financial viability. They need the support of collectors and
fans alike, so don't make a prat of yourself by going up to Woody at some
other venue and asking for a set. Paying your measly few pounds admission is
not only the first step to getting the chance to play some tunes there, it's
a key factor in keeping clubs like this alive. Remember that the other lads
and lasses that get up to play their tunes want some feedback, and they are
the same folk who will listen to you when it's your turn. The second thing
is if you're worried about somebody jumping on your new sounds and you
missing out, I for one will make it known that you were the person who first
spun them, and I can be quite loud about such things. If it's gonna happen,
it's gonna happen where ever you play them, and the folk who go to the Green
ain't those sort of folk. There's no recording equipment hooked up to the
decks, no portable tape decks positioned by the speakers. We all know how
hard it is to find the things, so we treat others how we want to be treated
ourselves.

On Friday Max and I did our stint (a miracle in itself after Kev Spittle had crush fractured nineteen bones in my hand half hour earlier - made all the funnier by Ken Onions saying with a totally straight face " Er, don't think he knows you've got brittle bones, that's how he shakes hands with everyone" alongside Woody and Col Kidson who provide the back bone of the club. I guess that the bravery building effect worked. We played four or five tunes the following nite at The New Century Niter that otherwise we would have had in the category of " shall we risk them or not". We can't know for sure, but having heard them loud, and seen the reaction from fellow devotees, it certainly bolstered our confidence in these tunes. I'm gonna write something about Saturday later, so I'll let you know then how they went over with the Niter dancers.
For those who like this sort of thing, here's our plays, or at least the ones I can remember, a mixture of acetates, cover up's, forgotten oldies, album tracks and tunes we don't often get a chance to play, plus a few Staffordy dusties at the end, for them wot like that kinda thing and fancied a bit of a boogie before Zebedee said time for bed ! the ones that are unlikely to be known too well I'll add a little description so you can get the idea of the broad reach of this magic little club

D. B. Productions - Messing With My Mind (vocal) - unissued.
DXM Studio powerhouse traditional NS styled dancer. the inst. flip is phenomenal like the detroit insts that GH played at TOTW, like Michigan move etc, and is the one we more often play.
"Laura Lee " - Never Gonna Be The Same - unissued
similar to the detroit classic 'way you been acting lately'
unknown female - Clock On The Wall - unissued Bell Sound acetate
sorta '100 club meets stafford' type thing, 60's builder, from known detroit writers.
J. B. Willingham - Don't Wanna Be Hurt No More - unissued Associated acetate
sort of big cityish bb builder, this has a lovely quality to it, a haunting catchy melody with superb vocals, when I first heard this I thought I'd heard it before, maybe there's another version to it ?
John Lucien - We Got Love - Columbia Music acetate (poss. unissued)
not to be confused with the other newie being spun with the same title, that's Teddy P, this sounds more like an Okeh Major, Billy Butler or Walter Jackson, deceptively somewhere between mid pace and uptempo.
Johnny Henley & Weirdest - Ooh Baby - cover up
one we've been playing for a while, known to some, so time to uncover soon, usually a dance first time you hear it tune, imagine a cross between cant get over these memories and that aussie version of I'll Be Around
Teddy Randazzo - Young Girl - cover up
the artist name says it all, similar to most of the stuff he produced on all the artists he worked with, nice bouncy midpacer.
Bettye Swann - I Got The Love - cover up
girlie vocal dancer, catchy as crabs, bears a resemblance to BS recent biggie, but it's better than that !
Fabulous Peps - Gypsy Woman - Premium Stuff s/s wdj
known but great version of the classic Curtis Mayfield song, done in a detroit style, complete with quaint slightly off key moments
Detroit Five - The Heart Of Town - cover up
nicked an old TOTW cover up name, that's how much I rate this probably detroit gem. we think it's the bizz !
Gene Redd prod - Do You Really Think He Cares - Media Sound acetate
alternative unissued version of Carstairs hurts me boy
artist unknown - It Really Hurts Me Boy - white label
almost ditto, 'cept this is a female answer to Corsairs
Ted Taylor - Somebody's Always Trying - Okeh
Jock Mitchell - I Got To Know - Impact wdj
perfect r'n'bish detroit, deserves attention that it's not getting, at least we've not heard it anywhere, maybe you know different ?
Jackie Beavers - You Can Have Her - SS7 wdj
old catacombs spin, driving r'n'bish edge to it, worth reviving we think
Cleo Randle - You Got Everything - Sta Set
quite well known but not often enough heard imo, an always mean to play, typical 'better out loud than at home' sound, what e used to call a 'firestarter '
Lou Rawls - Dead End Street - Capitol
had a U.K. '66 series without the spoken intro since I was a kid but always wanted the spoken intro one on 45, and thanks to mike hughes I recently got this one with the intro so thought we'd try it as we know there's some that like the wordy beginning tunes
Keanya Collins - It Ain't No Secret - Blue Rock wdj
another old Cats powerhouse stomper that got flipside plays later, cruelly ignored, so we've put it back in the playbox
Patron of Arts - True Patron of The Arts - Page One
former yate spin in the 70's, this is gonna go again, GH just got a copy, you have been warned, sounds like a powerhouse detroit inst. US copies have different credits, as the queen city band, so that's what it's known as,better at +4
Teddy & Fingerpoppers - Soul Groove ( part 2) - Arctic
virtually forgotten, former floor packing stomping inst flipside to pants vocal.
Ty Karim - Only A Fool - Roach
better flip to I Aint Lying. where IAL sounds like an early years spin, OAF is musically much more suited to plays amongst the 80's sounds of totw etc.
James Shorter - Ready For The Heartbreak - La Beat
staffordy sounding detroit mover
Lovelites - My Conscience - Lovelite
Supremes - Stoned Love - Tamla Motown
alternative 4 minute version, spoken intro, big brass middle break, dunno if anybody noticed it was different, except the dancers who had to dance longer
Girls & Diana - Fall In Love With you Again - cover up
an old albrighton cover up that we'd forgotten about, came to the fore on the back of the Diana & Her Girls one that broke out big (wonderful to me)
Kay Mc Murray - Girl With A Broken Heart - cover up
another old albrighton cover up, played for mr onions, instant 70's floor tune
Four Tops - You Got To Forget Him Darling - Tamla Motown
brilliant album track, had spins in Scotland a few years back, don't think anybody's ever persevered with it down here. although released in '72 sounds mid '60's
Luther - Don't Wanna Be A Fool - Cottilion
Wee Gee - Remember The Love - wdj
two nice 70's oldies that got revived at albrighton, don't hear too often now
Joyce Lawson - Love Uprising - Mutt & Jeff
the ' party mix' version, happy bouncy version of the NS classic tune, spun for one punter who unbeknown to us hadn't come this nite (we thought he was in !)
Eddie Parker & Lorraine Chandler - Love You Baby
not a dodgy 'stuck together in a studio' mixture of their two versions but a genuine duet. when Lorraine's vocal comes in it's a real 12 volt tingler !!!

Hoagy Lands - Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand - Atlantic
classic tub thumping Cats 60's stomper, that roger banks sometimes spins at mod doo's, so he told me recently ( not that I go to any you understand )
Ron Baxter - This Is It - Ole
the start of the 'send em home sweaty' crop of old faves and requests
Isonics - Sugar - Kammy
Bobby Valentin - Use It Before You Lose It - Fania
both above played 'cause "somebody" doesn't get the latin totw stuff
Stewart Ames - Angelina - J & W wdj
Timmie Williams - Competition - Mala
Little John - Just Wait & See - Go Gate
Jades - Where It's At - Nitelife wdj
Thornton Sisters - I Keep Forgettin' - Cuppy
Matt Lucas - You Better Go - Go - Karen
Vince Apollo - I Bear Witness - Pentagon
"Steve 'God' Mancha" - Since You've Been Gone
similar to his Groovesville slower sides, this is a gorgeous ender from THE man, though credited to the group - at plus 10
Deneice Williams - Cause You Love Me Baby - CBS
one I used to end with years back, sounds better now than it ever did, could now be played mid set and might go if a few more tried it, big budget mid tempo, magic production with mega vocal talent to boot !
(just thought, had Carl Holmes Soul Dance No. 3 in my hand, dunno if it got played, not that it's important but this one lad asks me every time I see him, and I keep forgetting )

if you want to know more about The Green and future dates there get back to me or Max and I'll try to pass on info john@solemole.fsnet.co.uk

Lifeline 17 Apr 2004 look back (2 for the price of one)

After last weekend adventures at The Mill on the Pier Wigan Niter and New Century/New Untouchables Brum dayer to be honest a weekend at home seemed most inviting. But as had the ticket, plans to meet, and the memories of the last one still in my head, Saturday nite saw me doing that bloody drive to deepest yorkshire yet again.

plus a view by steve p afterwards
Getting better only drove past turning 3 times this time, thru the door and straight away could pick up that buzz, buzz being that feeling that often look for at weekends. Some events have it, some only have it now and again, some had it once but no longer, and there's those that never had it. When it hits you it just tells you in for a top nite.

Place was packed again, set up as last time with the main room sounds and djs comimg thru loud and clear in the front room. Again soul fans from all over the place Fair old contingent from round North Wales coast , loads from North West, Midlands, the bit between Midland and London, Kent, North east, East coast Scotland, Yorkshire...maybe easier just to say all parts of this island.
Main room wise, well dj line up may have given you a idea of what was gonna be dished out.
Quality rare soul, taking in full range of styles and eras. Current, don't hear a lots, classy revivals and so on. Main room was buzzing, packed, buzzing and hot!! with floor busy.
Was a problem with floor being a bit glassy, seems this could have been due to the condensation, with the heat and sweat being cause, well thats what someone said and it sounded good to me
As sound was both rooms hard to keep track of what was given out and by who. Think Cliffe Steele was away cause of illness, with Kitch standing in, not sure who was on earlier on though.Kitch and Andy D were on the case when was in main room, followed by guest Soul Sam (or was it Butch before). Sam gave out a fairly wide mix, stuff like Hamilton movement, Fluorescent Smogg, King Moses - Got this feeling -Margaret Little — Love Finds A Way Joseph Websters knock knock song My Love Is Strong, goes pear shaped now can't suss this one out was it Jerry Washington on tk label Glades, titles gone, -"waste your time" or something ? whats score on this, not sure if heard Sams annoucement right and thought heard it again later. Someone help me.
As said Butch was either before or after, Mick H was then also up and at them, and don't even think asking me who finished
Honey & The Bees, Tolbert , Jean Wells, Butlers, Sensations, Betty L & Bobby A, Eric Lomax c/up, Hank Hodge being just a few grabbed from memory

odds
on the scene - latest issue out now and was being passed on

mags - dunno whats going on but in last week or so must have read 7 or 8 or more different mags, and still couldn't get away from them tonite with latest issues of Soul Up North, Shades of Soul and SKM all on offer. Shirley gave us a personalised lesson on how to complete her "hard as nails " quiz in SUN and even after the tution still only managed to get just the one right.

events - lots of new venues being flyered and talked about. Buzz word seems to be quality soul

monkey - fair old amount of regulars knocking around ( though due to gap its hard to remember what some look like:) hopefully be able to pass on that fairly important news on may event very soon

after 7 - main room shut and decks in back sparked up, mental note for future use that Mick H has "happy to be "

Nods - loads of catch/meet ups, fair few who knock around here and lots of laughs

endnote - well after 8 weeks since the last one,to me seems the second was as good as the first, dunno offical figures but seemed like another sell out.
My view simply another cracker.
Hats off go to all the lifeline team, promoters djs, door people , Rodz and Chris and all who were involved
next one think was said 8 weeks time

Mike, the title of it would be "Don't Waste My Time" from 1976. It seems to be very popular at the moment. Nice tune.

Re: Jerry Washington
Slightly popular to say the least Dave. Great record and it could almost have been written to follow Joseph Webster on Crow in a set which is one of the reason's Sam was desperate to get it.

Sounds like it was another cracker just a shame we had to pull out at the last minute as we were both really looking forward to it.

It's hard to say Mike as you said it is on Glades a TK subsiduary so you wouldn't have thought it was that hard but apparently Sam was after it for years with no joy, and after Steve Gaurnori played it at Yarmouth a couple of weeks ago interest has gone through the roof with the crossover boys so demand would be quite high. Sam did tell me that he did pay quite a bit for it because he was desperate to have and the seller didn't really want to sell, but he didn't mention a figure and i didn't ask.

John

Not much help i know but....

.. a lot of help john!
think the term "interest gone thru the roof" says it all, its when the interest has sunk thru the floor that I can make a move:)
thanks again
worked well to my ears

as chalky's said iv'e wrote reveiw and play lists a couple of titles and labels missing as i didn't quite catch them as i wrote it whilst dancing at the same time. e.mailed you a copy hope you got it .all in all a bloody brilliant night music top notch, not one complaint as far as im aware, floor got a bit slippey all the sweat from the dancers soon rectefied by opening a door, made a change to go to a nighter and not hear any of the top 500 most played out oldies good as they are it's time to give them a rest ? if more promoters took note of what mike and andy are achieving the the scene would be better for it as they've proved the dancers want new quality sounds plus underplayed oldies long may lifeline continue to be just that ,the countries no1 upfront venue. can't wait till june get your tickets know cause it's gonna be another sellout.

Lifeline review & playlists from Steve Phillis
Big thanks to Steve Phillis for the following review of the last Lifeline all-nighter....

SATURDAY 17th APRIL

2nd LIFE-LINE ALLNIGHTER — SHERIDANS - DEWSBURY

O.K. just how do you try and write a review on what’s probably the best upfront niter since Stafford, a venue the scene as been crying out for, for the past 10 years or more. A venue where the dj’s aren’t afraid to play something new and different well here we go.

Arriving early with Mick H the doors were due to open at 9.30pm but many people arrived early as it was a sell-out, by 10 pm the place was buzzing; the record bar was crammed to capacity with both dealers and punters, the main dance floor was jammed solid and the atmosphere was electric.

This reminded me of the same atmosphere you got as you walked through the casino doors, we even had the condensation dripping from the roof, the floor was packed too capacity with dancers from every corner of the country, London, Edinburgh, Norwich, Manchester, Notts, Leicester, Wales etc. Everyone there all to listen too what can only be classed as the best and rarest new sounds in the Country, The dj’s on the night where Nick Stevenson, Mick H, Andy Dyson, Kitch, Butch, and guest Soul Sam. There must have been near on a million £’s worth of vinyl behind the decks the music policy upfront new 60’s 70’s and rare and underplayed oldies, and that’s just what we got.

What followed was a true soul fan’s dream come true, 9 ½ hours of pure soul the crowd knowledgeable and appreciative gave every dj and record the recognition they deserved, for those people who haven’t been I say open your minds and visit this venue, as the records that are played here are the oldies of the future. The atmosphere on the night was the best I’ve sampled at a niter in many a year.

Not one person I spoke to had a bad word to say about the music or the dj’s, some people may think me bias as I’ve known both Mick and Andy for more years than I can remember, special mentions to Gilly ,great to see you out again mate also to Dallas daughter of Fran who gave me her top 5 and with both mellow souls and Mac Staten in the top 2 there’s a future for the scene yet, also a special mention to Mandy and Wendy who greeted on the door, these girls worked tirelessly on the door also Chris and Rodz whom without their cooperation the night wouldn’t have been possible.

The spot’s where brilliant one after the other big sounds, unknowns, rare oldies, each received with enthusiasm from the floor, which was packed solid right up till 7.30am then we moved too the record/chill out room until 9.30am. This is by far the best niter in years get a ticket for Junes event and see for yourselves, what is the dj’s play list’s the calibre of which you’ll never see at any other niter in the country. Thanks to Mick and Andy for the sight the inspiration and the guts to put on such an excellent night. This venue is a breath of fresh air too the scene as there are far too many niters you go to play the same old time tested top 500 played out oldies I say too everyone open your minds and ears visit this brilliant venue as it really is the scene’s life line

Rating 100% pure soul

PLINSTON MAY 7TH UPDATE

Latest news from the Box Office today is that they are no longer reserving tickets on the door for picking up on the night due to a change in policy. Dont have the full details yet but if you dont have a credit card then drop us a line at the 6Ts Mafia, along with all the names of those who want one put by, and we will sort it this time. The buzz on this one is huge and growing and looks set to be another packer so dont delay - be sure to put yourself where the action is on Friday May 7th! In addition the latest Trading Cards are out there, after a cock-up in the design stage (see elsewhere for the scan), and features The Plinston Family Movie and the July Trading Card reveals all on Roger Banks secret life :-) TheBigO nh6tsmafia@aol.com
