Review: Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - Jazz Cafe

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings at the Jazz Cafe, London on Friday 9th January 2004
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings at the Jazz Cafe, London on Friday 9th January 2004
Fellow Soul Source, James Trouble is the DJ tonight and he plays a blinding 2 hour set to warm up the crowd. At 9.30pm, 8 men walk onto the stage looking more Reservoir Dogs than funk musicians, in their black suits, ties and white shirts. The Dap Kings are the house band for Daptone records and are made up of musicians from The Soul Providers and the Mighty Imperials, both of which gained recognition for laying the music behind Desco Records’ legendary catalogue of funk 45s and Lps.
The show commences with two hard instrumentals to get this Friday night crowd moving. As they begin to play “The Cassella Walk”, Dave, the trumpet player and MC walks over to the main mic to speak. “Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Daptone Super Soul Revue. We are the Dap Kings and we’d like to introduce you to a funky and dynamic sister. The star of our show, the No.1 funk sister. Miss Sharon Jones!”
If you’ve seen this whirlwind live before, you know Sharon Jones is not one to waste time. With braids in her hair and a black baby doll dress, the five foot tall stick of dynamite backslides between the horn players, grabs the mic and declares that she has something on her mind she needs to share - cue her first single ‘Got a thing on my mind’ - a beautiful fast and tight track which was an overnight hit in the US. Spicing it up in the bridge, she shouts, “ got a thing on ma mind Mr Bush! Tell me, tell me, if the war in Iraq is over why don’t you send our brothers and sisters home!”
Men are still on her mind in the next song - a cover of ‘What have you done for me lately’.
“Miss Jackson did this song but i’m taking it and making it funk!” A mood brass section starts the song, the rhythm section kicks in and Sharon starts singing in a way only a great funk singer can ... “What have you done for me lately, I ain’t talking about last year, last month, last week, or yesterday. What have you done for me in the last second... huh!”
Next up is a gritty version of “Things Got To Get Better”, written by James Brown and originally sung by Marva Whitney. It’s here I realise that Sharon’s voice is more akin of the higher range’s Lyn Collins and Vicky Anderson but it works brilliantly on this track.
Sharon was born in Augusta, Georgia in the late 50s. As she shares with the crowd a story of her and her brother as kids practising the moves of fellow Georgian, James Brown, the Dap Kings take us into their third song and final cover, “There was a Time”. This gives Ms Jones the perfect opportunity to showcase her own floor work - the JB shuffle, mash potato, jerk, camel walk, boogaloo and finishing with the “Miss Sharon Jones”.
By now no one in the Jazz Cafe is standing still (except for the couple sucking each other’s faces off next to us!) The incredible wall of sound generated by the Dap Kings sounds as fresh now as it was when the godfather of soul played the New York Apollo 30 odd years ago.
Giving the crowd time to cool down, the next song is ‘Ain’t it Hard’, quickly followed by some audience participation for ‘Give Me A Chance’ as Sharon drags punters willing and good enough to dance on stage, encouraging them to “Shake the thang your mama give you!” James where was Annie! This also gives the guitar and bass section of the Dap Kings a chance to shine.
‘How Long Have I Got To Wait’ is followed by ‘You Make Me Feel Good’ and Ms Jones introduces each member of the Dap Kings, their respective tools of the trade and the reasons each one of them “make me feel good”. Tonight the band worked through most of their repertoire laid to tape, ‘Make It Good to Me’, ‘Got to Be the Way It Is’ being my favourites, and a few numbers I haven’t heard before including “I’m Glad” and ‘I Ain’t Paying’.
With each ensuing song the temperature continues to rise in the Jazz Cafe, Ms. Jones winding the room tighter and tighter with her tireless Dap Kings. She finished the show with ‘I’m Genuine’ (remember folks they’re American do genuine rhymes with serpentine!) and we head of into the cold night air shaking the thing our mama gave us.
The Dap Kings were:
Drums - Homer “Funky Foot” Jenkins
Congos – Fernando Velez
Guitar - TNT
Guitar - Al
Bass - Bosco ‘bass’ Mann (writer and arrange of all songs)
Tenor Sax - Otis Youngblood
Tenor Sax - Neil Sugarman (of Sugarman 3)
Dave Guy - Trumpet and MC

Footnote:
We spoke to a Daptone rep on the night who was selling their catalogue of 45s. Sharon Jones’ version of ‘Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)’ is not set to be released on single yet but it is likely to be on their second album (date of release unknown).

Southern Soul

The South are always complaining that there isnt anywhere to go locally... well, they are wrong! You do not have to travel to London to find a decent soul gig with rare soul. You do not even have to travel to London for atmosphere! See, there is this amazing newish nighter born from two deeply passionate men down Portsmouth way. I know, your saying... well, not sure what they are gonna play.. dont wanna visit a new gig if they play the same old shit over and over... OK, I hear you!
So, here are a few of their playlists. The dancefloor is 100% wood heaven with a good dosing of talc. Blimey I hear you all say! And NO! That was not from the guest DJs, that was from the RESIDENT lads. Steve Csordas and Dave Abbott. Two hugely, fanatical, passionate guys whom deserve a lot of attention. Foremost because of their passion for taking the soul scene forward instead of patriotically paused... who are patrons of some of the best soul nights around the world and who care about the scene. I implore, all those that are the south to patronise this soul event as they do yours. 2004 dates are: 23 Jan Colin Wood and Eddie Engel 27 Feb Andy Faulkner and Simon Bridger - slurp 30 April Pete Hulatt and Molly - yippeeee 25 June & first anniversay Nige Shaw and Cookie and Guest 25 Sept Alan Hanscome and Ady Lupton - Dome? No More George Jackson Soul Nites

This was posted up in the forum by David N, but as David has posted regular over the last few years info on this nite, thought worthwhile moving it to news section. Best of luck with new ventures, apart from a rep as a great nite, will miss your flyers:)

No More George Jackson Soul Nites
Davids post

After three years we have decided to call it a day with George Jackson!, so I am afraid there will be no more events for the foreseeable future. Thanks for the support from all those that attended and to all our guest DJs. Anthony, Gareth, Mark and myself will continue to seek out great soul records and perhaps one day we will put on more great nights. In the meantime, for any that are interested I shall be playing at Kev Moores Grapevine Soul nights in Brixton, no doubt spinning a few GJ favourites.
Best wishes,
David Nossiter

Current plans are to let the top DJs have 2 spots during the night in forthcoming months, similar to the 100 club.Febuary will be the start with Carl doing an early spot and a later spot.

We did incur minor problems with the sound system on the first allnighter which has now been sorted.A big thanks to everybody concerned up and down the country that has helped out getting this venue up and running. It is mainly word of mouth that brings the people back to Ashby.Feedback phone calls emails etc have been very encouraging.

The December 13th gig went very well although we walked away £50 out of pocket. We left next morning with huge grins on our faces knowing we have a special venue here.At the end of the day we are just normal soulful people that dont look to make a profit out of it,but provide the entertainment that the midlands was missing since Bretby allnigher shut down.
We will continue to keep the event running all year, and thanks again for all your valued support.
All The Best Steve Wileman (South Derbyshire Soul Club).

LOTS OF LOVE AND BIG THANK YOU

To ALL of YOU who came along to my Surprise Birthday Party last nite, organised by my daughter, Theresa with help from Taf and Lisa.
Big Thank You to Michele (dj at Greenwich on tonite) for her spot, everyone commented on how good it was, which it was (also for keeping the secret even when we went out the other nite!). Also to Taff, who always keeps everyone happy, even when my family requested other music.

To everyone who couldnt make it or my daughter forgot to ask, you missed a great nite, e.g. DArcy, Trickster & Etsu in Japan, Dolly in Labour!

Hoping I wont forget anyone who attended BIG THANK YOU TO - Terry Cozens, Tony Wildman & Jackie, Kez & Barry, Kay & Mark, Mike & Liam, Trish & Paul, Toby & his wife, Chantelle & Hubby, and everyone else who I have probably forgotten - very sorry.

One person on everyones mind last nite, WHO WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN, & of course, couldnt attend, RANDY COZENS. x x x

2003 UPPERS & DOWNERS

Still missed by so many on the scene his memory is kept alive constantly everywhere i go through the records djs are constantly playing and crediting to him.The turnout at the funeral & the subsequent all-dayer tribute was immense and showed what so many thought of this great guy.Always in our thoughts and in our music.

The highs of the year for me were Dean Parrish at Cleethorpes and of course Maxine, great as ever, the Plinston 1st Anniversary and going from strength to strength, managing to get Butch & Mick on there for January16th.A thought for the new year-Have fun, keep it soulful whether its 60s 70s 80s 90s or Y2K ITS ALL SOUL THE MUSIC WE LOVE.

Hi Taff, lovely to read what you said about Randy, I have had few people say to me how things arent the same without him, I certainly know that too. Many of us will always miss him just as much as we loved and cared for him, I know you would agree with me on that. I hope the new year will be good to you as well as others. Im going to listen to all singing all dancing now and hoping a tribute will go out to Randy who did so much for the scene and hoping that will always be remembered. He will certainly always be in my heart.

6Ts at the 100 Club January 10th 2004 - first play!

Message from Harboro Horace

Get your twinkling feet down to the 100 Club this Saturday January 10th ......
1.30-8am if you want to hear one of the greatest northern discoveries of all time.

Think of one of the top three classic northern instrumentals that have never had a genuine vocal. Then imagine a full male soul vocal group giving it all theyve got over the top of it.

This was recorded at the same time as the instrumental and has laid dormant for 35+ years.

Be among the chosen few to hear and dance to it on its first ever public appearance.

Funk Brothers - Manchester and London 29-30 Jan 04

Hi-Just wanted to see if you could possibly pass the word on that the legendary Motown studio band, The Funk Brothers, will be playing two dates in the UK with guest vocalists Steve Winwood and Isaac Hayes.

The dates are Jan. 29th at the Apollo in Manchester and Jan. 30th in London at Royal Festival Hall.

We will be playing some predictable Motown songs but also some off-the-beaten track Motown and non-Motown songs the guys played on like "Function At The Junction," "Here Come The Judge," "Cool Jerk," "The Flick," and others.

Its usually not good form to go on websites to promote commercial ventures but in the case of the Funk Brothers, it falls more into the realm of a good deed as theyve waited four decades for the recognition and awards they e now receiving.

There are other European dates also scheduled on the tour which can be found on our website: www.standingintheshadowsofmotown.com

All the best, Allan (Dr. Licks) Slutsky

Smoove Groove - Modern Soul In Dublin

Saturday 31st of January 2004 sees the first night of what will hopefully become a regular feature of the Dublin Soul scene. Smoove Groove kicks off upstairs in The Legal Eagle (aka The Bar) on Chancery Place, beside Dublins Four Coutrts at 8:30pm with resident DJs Joe Moran and Paul Davis plus guests Honest John, Danny Duggan, Lisa M and Paul Duffy. This promises to be a cracking night with Smoove Grooves from the 70s, to Y2K choons. Its modern soul all the way and hopefully will become a monthly night with lots of excellent modern DJs lined up for future nights. For more info on this and all the soulful happenings in the Emerald Isle check out the website http://homepage.eircom.net/~dublinsoul or email dublinsoul@eircom.net or pauljdavis@oceanfree.net. It may be winter outside Big Daddys Soul Shack

It May Be Winter Outside But In My Heart Its Spring - Seasons Greetings From The Big Fellow........
Firstly I cant believe the huge number of hits my recent posting on the bootleg issue got, its fantastic to gain mainly support for my comments so thanks for that, all we need to do is Keep It Real and we should be fine.
2003 has been a fantastic year on the rare soul scene with many of the venues doing really well, some might say that there is a little too much on at the present time but one thing is the scene is possibly the most busy it has ever been over the past four decades and long may it continue.
Im really looking forward to 2004 as there are already some very tasty events to look forward to during the early part of the new year in particular the second New Century Soul Club Allnighter in Manchester on Saturday January 31st, this time in two rooms and if the massive first event was anything to go by it is hoped that the 700 plus people who attended will return with a friend and then this venue will be without question one of the leading Northern Soul venues in the country. 9pm through 7am -
DJs include TIM BROWN, MICK H, DAVE RIMMER, JO WALLACE, GARY COPE, KIDDO AND MYSELF IN THE MAIN ROOM AND RUSS WINSTANLEY, DAVE EVISON, STEVE WHITTLE AND BRIAN RAE IN THE DOWNSTAIRS SECOND ROOM which also hosts the after show party for Paul Sadots Once Upon A Time In Wigan production which ends its Manchester run and the start of the UK tour, so very much a Wigan Casino flava in room two that night.
The New Century event will run on the final Saturday every month throughout 2004 and there are some outstanding DJs booked in to play at future nights. Again thanks to everyone who attended the first Allnighter back on December 6th, it was simply a magic night and has set the venue in a good position to be able to grow to a bigger and better event. Plenty of soul gigs to attend over the Christmas period so have a fantastic time wherever you end up, also if you fancy a good soul night out check out
THE LIME STREET CLUB, CHAPEL STREET, OFF KING STREET, DUKINFIELD NEAR MANCHESTER ON SATURDAY DECEMBER 27TH - FROM 8PM THROUGH LATE, WITH DJS ALEX JONES, EDDIE ENGLES, SID JONES, MARK BICKNELL AND VERY SPECIAL GUESTS MICK H AND BIRTHDAY GIRL JUMPING JOAN - ADMISSION ADVANCE TICKET £4.00 OR £4.50 PAY ON THE DOOR PLUS A FREE SAMPLE CD FROM SID JONES TO THE FIRST 50 THROUGH THE DOOR FOR FURTHER INFORMATION TELEPHONE 0161 330 6267 OR 0161 338 7294 - A fantastic little soul night well worth a visit, good sound system, cheap bar, nice dance floor and used but not abused music policy.
Last but not least the massive Midnight Hour soul weekender is only a few weeks off now and bookings are well over 2000 so if you plan on going i would suggest that you get your bookings in now rather than miss out on what promises to be a huge event, details can be found here on Soulsource so check out the details as soon as you can. I trust you will all get what you desire this Christmas, mines a George Pepp if anyone can help....................... still cant complain as my wife Jacqui paid for a couple of recent Ebay wins as part of my Christmas present so i love her to bits.
Respect and big up to Mike Hughes and all at Soulsource, thanks to all the promoters who have booked me this year, big thanks to Chris Waterman and Lee Crank of The New Century Soul Club for having the faith in me to play at few tunes at their bright, fresh new venue in Manchester at the CIS and for supporting my radio show on Solar Radio,
SORRY IF I GO OVER THE TOP SOMETIMES ON CERTAIN ISSUES AND TOPICS CONNECTED WITH OUR SCENE BUT I ONLY DO IT AND SAY THE THINGS I SAY IF ITS WRONG OR OUT OF ORDER, WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER FOR THE REST OF OUR DAYS SO WE MUST RESPECT THE MUSIC, THE SCENE AND EACH OTHER IF WE ARE TO CONTINUE THIS AMAZING JOURNEY, ITS WITH US FOR LIFE GUYS SO LETS AT LEAST TRY TO GET ON EVEN IF SOME OF US CANT, LETS KEEP IT REAL AND STAY TRUE TO THE ORIGINS OF THE SCENE AND LETS MOVE ON AND FILL AS MANY VENUES AS WE CAN THROUGHOUT THE UK, IF NOTHING ELSE THE MUSIC DESERVES THAT RESPECT.
Its about people, its about sharing the whole deal, no one person is bigger than the music and we must at all cost let the scene survive and blossom because as Dena Barnes said If you ever walk out of my life there be tear drops and heartaches..........imagine life without this beautiful scene of ours.....I cant. To all promoters, DJs, collectors, dancers, record dealers in the land you, we, all of us make the scene what it is, there may be petty politics from time to time, we all dont agree on certain aspects of how the scene is run and worked but what we should all have in common is a passion for what we do and how we do it from the local 200 capacity venue to the monster events they are all keeping the whole thing going and im proud to be a part of just about the best cult music scene in the world.
Happy Christmas -
Keep It Real - Mark Bicknell.

One of the earliest and also the most worthwhile northern related web sites has been subject to a major revamp along with a new name Northern-Soul.com (aka Soul-a-Go-Go!) being the new name and domain, with new features, look and feel. It looks like it will build on its well deserved reputation and status as a regular worthwhile visit site click here to visit Always rated Martins site, as may have noticed theres a lot of northern related sites out there In attempt to seperate wheat from chaff, how about using comments to pass on your best rated sites

Plinston Contact Info!

Hi Brothers&Sisters, The family and I jet off this Friday for the rather nipple freezing -40c and 6ft of snow that is Minnesota at this time of the year for Xmas, where the wife and kids can sample the delights of the Mall Of America and I can be found, as usual, knee deep in shite, dust, the heady aroma of dubious leaf products from the staff wading through the racks of 45s and Lps that my little source has in his warehouse. Whilst Im away anyone that needs info on the forthcoming, and looking to be a sell-out, Plinston bash with Butch and Mick Smith guesting should call the lovely Kay on 01438-236808 where she will impart words of wisdom and answer any queries you may have. Have a lovely Xmas everyone and heres to a successful and soulful New Year for all clubs in 2004. Now, wheres my thermal jock strap?......
