Billy Valentine - We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue (Flying Dutchman / Acid Jazz)

Billy Valentine - one half of the Valentine Brothers of ‘Money’s Too Tight To Mention’ fame -  and Bob Thiele Jr have been working together for some time, writing songs for amongst others Ray Charles, Joe Cocker and Axwell from the Swedish House Mafia.
During the 2020 - lockdown and the protests around George Floyd and on behalf of BLM - the pair started working on an album of politically relevant covers from soul music’s past. The first fruits were this stunning version of Curtis Mayfield’s ‘We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue’, where Billy is accompanied by The Larry Golding Trio and Blue Note Records recording artist and very special saxophone talent Immanuel Wilkins.
It stunned both me and my partner in Acid Jazz Records Eddie Piller.
It was something that should have just been a diversion but the results were stunning and an album’s worth of material was recorded featuring amongst others Jeff Parker, Joel Ross, Theo Croker, Pino Paladino, James Gadson and Linda May Oh.
Bob and I had been working on the Flying Dutchman catalogue at Ace Record - It was of course Bob's father's label and he working with his father’s legacy for the first time - and he felt that this record could sit proudly and appropriately alongside that catalogue and that it should be the first new release on Flying Dutchman since 1976. Myself and Eddie offered to release it on Flying Dutchman via Acid Jazz, a collaboration between two classic labels.
The album is coming next year,  but for now there is a limited one sided 7 white label 7-inch available from the Acid Jazz online shop.

North Broad Street Records: Lovemasters - If You See Kate / Let’s Stay Together (NBS007BL)

North Broad Street Records (NBS 007BL). Release: 3rd September 2022

E. Mark Windle, 22 August 2022.

As North Broad Street Records goes from strength to strength, September will see the arrival of the seventh vinyl release in their series of quality previously unissued soul recordings. NBS 007 takes us to the Windy City for two fine tracks by the group who previously gave us a northern soul classic on Jacklyn Records.

A key figure in this particular origin story is West Yorkshire record collector and DJ Dave Box. When Dave passed away in 2018, the UK soul community lost a vital connection with some of the finest Chicago soul artists of all time. Boxy’s involvement on the soul scene goes further back than most—Normanton Baths soul nights from 1967, the all-nighters which followed in the early 1970s, and in more recent years, the Wilton and Frobisher events. Dave’s close friendship with a number of recording artists culminated in some UK stage appearances which discerning soul fans had only dreamed of experiencing. His commitment to the scene was unyielding, and the legacy continues with this latest release by North Broad Street.

The Lovemasters are of course best known for their solitary 45 release “Pushin’ and Pullin’ ”. Considering the record has been known to soul fans and collectors for decades, it’s ironic that the group’s history has only come to light in relatively recent years. In 2009 the late, great Chicago collector Bob Abrahamian managed to track down and secure an interview with founder member Edith Andrews for his Sitting in the Park broadcasts, ensuring that The Lovemasters’ story was documented for posterity.

By the time Edith Andrews had formed The Lovemasters, she’d already amassed a lengthy resume of singing and playing music. Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Edith’s love for singing started at school, and her musical ability was nurtured through her teenage years at the Chicago Conservatory of Music where she studied piano. Entry into the world of secular music involved singing doowop hits of the day by The Spaniels, The El Dorados, and The Dells with her classmates, before leaving high school and forming The Tonettes with three of her white co-workers from First National Bank in downtown Chicago.

The girl group fell short of signing to Chanson due to parental concerns over contract wording, and inevitably The Tonettes drifted apart. Determined to stay in the business, Edith placed an advert in the Chicago Defender in 1967 in the quest to find vocalists for a new group. Male or female, it didn’t matter: as long as they were as serious as Edith about trying to make it in the music industry.

Four replied, and three got the job:  James Simmons (baritone), Michael Vonse (lead first tenor / falsetto), and Ronald (Ron) Murray (bass / baritone). A name was chosen—The Toronados, in line with the usual custom of adopting automobile makes of the day—and rehearsals commenced. Within weeks they were approached by a local booking agent looking for a support act for a young Tyrone Davis who was still signed with Four Brothers at the time and due to perform at a ballroom venue on 63rd Street. The Toronados fitted the bill perfectly, and performed mainly Motown covers on stage that night to an appreciative crowd.

Regular gigs followed. Over the next couple of years the addition of musicians Rich Sansky on drums, Willie Riser on bass, and Phil Crow on lead guitar completed the group. Now known as The Lovemasters, bookings took them to some pretty interesting venues around Chicago, including Cook County Jail and a detention centre for boys, but also out of state for the first time to St. Louis, Missouri and various clubs in Iowa.

The Lovemasters’ signing to Jacklyn in the early 1970s was the result of an introduction by a mutual friend to local record producer and businessman Johnny Haygood. Operating from a record store at 2200 East Seventy-Fifth Street, the Jacklyn label was one of Haygood’s many enterprises, named after one of his daughters, and essentially a vehicle to promote the singing talent of his stepson, one Darrow Fletcher. Outside of the family circle, a couple of ‘significant others’ were also associated with the label. Singer-songwriter Johnny Moore and his record producing, song-writing partner Jack Daniels had first worked together on Four Brothers and Bright Star material before arriving at Jacklyn. “Pushin’ and Pullin’ “ was the first record on the label to be credited to Johnny Moore, and was based on a popular dance craze of the time.

That was to be the group’s only release for Jacklyn, and with limited airplay the record languished. The Lovemasters’ contract was due to expire, and with no real sign of success with Haygood’s venture, most of the members agreed to split from the label (though Edith did appear on occasional later recordings for Haygood). That meant hitting the road again for a few years before returning to the studio, this time to cut a demo for Curtom. Curtis Mayfield was impressed enough to sign them but the writing was on the wall—Curtom’s halcyon days were on the wane, and there was no immediate call for the group to record. With The Lovemasters locked into the contract with Curtom, they were unable to record for another label. A few more gigs in the city followed, but eventually Edith and the boys called it a day in 1977. Curtom as a non-starter was part of the issue (the label eventually closed in 1980), but all admitted that a rest was overdue from years of hectic weekend performances. Ten years was pretty a reasonable tenure for any group.

Fast-forward twenty years. Over that time, Dave Box and wife Val were visiting Chicago on a frequent basis, record hunting and strengthening relationships with the likes of Chuck Bernard, Jimmy Burns and other industry professionals. A chat one evening over a catfish dinner with producer Jack Daniels led to the exchange of a telephone number for Daniels’ former partner, and a long lasting friendship began between Dave and Johnny Moore. The circle was now complete. By the 2000s, Dave was encouraging various acts to come over to the UK to perform on stage. Among those were Jackie Ross and Syl Johnson, who in 2006 provided an unforgettable appearance at his regular stomping ground, the Frobisher Suite in Stanley Ferry. Sadly, Johnny Moore passed away the previous year or he would have been there too, though Dave did manage to pay homage, working with Garry Cape on the excellent Grapevine CD anthology of Moore’s work.

Regarding the North Broad Street release under the spotlight: these recordings are brought to you via a collaboration with Tim Brown, and an unissued Universal Recording Corp. acetate originally sourced from Dave Box’s collection. We know the acetate was destined for Jacklyn, and by deduction was likely produced sometime around 1972. Without the luxury of any credits displayed on the disc, Johnny Moore’s involvement in production can’t be confirmed, but it certainly is plausible given the circumstances of how Dave acquired it. “If You See Kate”, is a heavy bass driven funk number with a psychedelic edge, aurally in a similar vein to Sam Dees’ dark Atlantic numbers, though the message here is more about the pain of knowing his girl has gone rather than a commentary on inner-city life. The song will actually be known to collectors through the Buddy Lamp version on Duke and French Disques Vogue from 1971—in fact both versions appear to share the same backing track. Duke may be a Texas imprint, but credits on the Lamp version reveal Detroit connections. Johnny Haygood worked with Don Mancha regularly through the recordings of his stepson Darrow Fletcher and others artists, so perhaps it’s no surprise that Jacklyn was also considering the composition. For completion, North Broad Street have also included the acetate flip, “Let’s Stay Together”.

So then, yet another quality recording and a fine exercise in historical preservation from North Broad Street to add to the collection. “If You See Kate” is available to order from 3rd September at https://northbroadst.co.uk
Acknowledgements: Released under licence via Ace Records for Darrow Fletcher. Broad Street would also like to thank Val Box and Tim Brown for making this release possible. Thanks also to Val Box, Garry Cape and Jock O’Connor for article assistance.

New 45 - Gabriels - Love And Hate In A Different Time - Now Out

Much talked about track  'Love And Hate In A Different Time' by the Gabriels is finally out on release on 45
Release/Press notes follow below
Gabriels - Love And Hate In A Different Time / Spanish Harlem - Atlas Artists / Parlophone
For the first time, ‘Love & Hate In A Different Time’ is now getting a special 7 Inch release with a previously unreleased live version ...
In 2021, Los Angeles trio Gabriels arrived in a whirlwind with the loose-limbed vintage soul jam of ‘Love & Hate In A Different Time’, a song that could have dropped in almost any era. A stone-cold classic, it introduced a band so much more than just the sum of their supremely talented parts.

For the first time, ‘Love & Hate In A Different Time’ is now getting a special 7 Inch release with a previously unreleased live version of ‘Spanish Harlem’ recorded at BBC Maida Vale studios for a Gilles Peterson 6 Music session.

Just a handful of live shows deep, the spotlight swings and lands squarely on vocalist Jacob Lusk. A man who demands attention with a presence and voice of a gospel choir. That rich vocal swoops and soars through the pitches effortlessly matched by an on-stage persona that’s intensely likeable.

A bonafide star by anybody’s reckoning. Two acclaimed EPs deep and yet barely out of second gear, Gabriels have moved beyond mere promise to become one of 2022’s most essential new acts.

A double treat for those who love timeless Southern Soul flavoured with some of those good ol’ down home blues.
Memphis born, and Minneapolis based, Willie Walker can comfortably be included in the pantheon of grittiest soul singers along with Wilson Pickett, Syl Johnson, Lou Rawls, James Carr, Eddie Floyd, Tyrone Davis and L.V. Johnson, to name but a few, but there has always been speculation about other Willie Walkers. The recordings on Eutor and Hi in the 70’s are not by the same Willie as those on Goldwax and Checker in the 60’s. He did, however, also record as Wee Willie Walker.
He was a member of The Rhythm Harmonizers, The Val-Dons, The Exciters, The Bound Band, Willie & The Bumblebees (although that Willie is actually Willie Murphy of The Val-Dons), and Canoise, spanning a long and varied career before hooking up with the Minneapolis based band The Butanes in 2004, with whom he made the next three albums. The first of these was mainly cover versions, but "Right Where I Belong" (2004) and "Memphisapolis" (2006) are notable for each providing the tracks that make up this latest Jai Alai release, a label that differs from sister label Soul4Real by featuring 21st century tracks previously CD only but now released on 7” vinyl for the first time. It also has to be noted that all the tracks on both these albums were written and produced by Curtis Obeda, who managed to track down Willie after so many years.
"I Feel It" will have been missed by most as it was on the CD "Right Where I Belong" which was released in 2004 on the most unlikely of UK imprints, the Wirral based One On One Records run by Colin Dilnot. The album is a lavish display of real instruments from a band that once backed John Lee Hooker and Little Johnny Taylor and the perfect setting for Willie’s powerful vocals.
Just tipping five glorious minutes, "Cry, Cry, Cry" is a perfect example of why soul music is inextricably linked to the blues, and when the gospel styled chorus joins in towards the end, you realise that this could, maybe should, have carried on for just a little bit longer. Perhaps a fuller length version exists?
Sadly, Willie died peacefully in his sleep in November 2019, but to complete his story check out the two albums on Blue Dot as Wee Willie Walker & The Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra. To quote the great Quinton Claunch…”Willie was one of the best to come out of Memphis in the 60’s”.

Not a great deal is known about this talented artist having released only 4 albums in a recording career that started in 1993. Raised in a musical family by piano playing parents he began learning the instrument at an early age, later concentrating on the saxophone, but became a multi-instrumentalist by the time was signed to Verve Records, playing most forms of keyboards, synths, vibes, as well as sax and flute. He moved to Florida, from his native New York, shortly after graduating from studying music at university in New Jersey, and played in local rock bands whilst developing his love for jazz, and was working on a demo to try and get a record deal.
Disaster struck when he was involved in a serious boating accident in which both hands were badly crushed and he was unable to play an instrument for many months, during which time he developed a skill for singing and composing. Turning adversity into opportunity is the best way to describe the outcome.
So why is a soul label interested in releasing some of his material? Both tracks selected, "One" and "Sweeter", are released on vinyl for the first time and come from his third album, "Lights On", released on his own label Eaak Records following a break of 7 years which was devoted to raising his children. The sounds are undeniably late night make-out music, lush, sophisticated and sensuous.
The majority of plaudits for his work previously came from the world of contemporary jazz and, dare I say it, smooth jazz, and was largely ignored by the soul magazines and radio stations. His captivating falsetto vocal style, reflects his influences by Curtis Mayfield, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. All his material is self-penned and the albums were co-produced with drummer Guy Eckstine. There is an underlying 70’s feel to the contemporary arrangements and his work is clearly deserving of greater recognition.

Mica Millar Video - New Release 'More Than You Give Me'

One of the UK’s brightest new stars, Mica Millar unveils the video for her new groove-infused single ‘More Than You Give Me’ – lifted from her 5-star debut album ‘Heaven Knows’.
The track was written, arranged and produced by Mica, who also took on engineering duties alongside bassist and engineer, Vince Chiarito (Black Puma's) and Grammy-award winning engineer Lewis Hopkins, featuring guitar by Jessie Barnes and Tom Fripp, Organ by John Ellis (Corinne Bailey Rae, Lilly Allen), drums by Jonathan Tuitt (Emile Sande, Mahalia) and mastering by Geoff Pesche (Tina Turner, Ed Sheeran, Adele) at Abbey Road Studios.
On ‘More Than You Give Me’,  Mica explains: “Sometimes it takes a new person or situation to make you reflect on a relationship with a new perspective. This song is about gaining that new perspective, reclaiming your power and being unapologetic about it. It’s the moment you realize the relationship isn’t right, you’re worth more and you decide to walk away. The concept for the music video was about falling in and out of love. It's about the places you go to in your mind when you're fighting against the end of a relationship that you know isn't right for you and being pulled towards someone else."
You can watch the brand new music video by clicking here or listen to the track on streaming platforms by clicking here
Widespread acclaim for Mica's debut album has been plentiful since its release in June 2022. National radio support has come from the likes of Craig Charles & Tom Robinson on 6 Music, Trevor Nelson on BBC Radio 2 with features on Good Morning Sunday and a slot on Clive Anderson’s ‘Loose Ends’ on BBC Radio 4. Jazz FM also became one of Mica’s biggest supporters, making ‘Heaven Knows’ their 'Album of the Week' and latest single, 'More Than You Give Me' their 'Track of The Week' followed by playlist support.
Gracing the cover of Blues & Soul’s June 2022 issue and Echoes Magazines August issue, Mica was called “a star with intense emotional sincerity” (Blues & Soul) with Echoes citing the record as 'one of the best Soul albums of 2022'.
Mica’s will also be performing two very special live shows next month to officially launch the album at the capital’s prestigious Jazz Cafe on Saturday 17th September and then the iconic Albert Hall in Manchester on Sunday 25th September. Tickets are available here.

Eccentric Soul 7" Bundle 2022

Eccentric Soul 7" Bundle 2022
Numero Group have announced a new 7 inch bundle, priced £26 plus shipping for the three, the make up of this bundle is based on user demand, details follow

Eccentric Soul 7" Bundle
It's been about a year since our last Eccentric Soul 7" Bundle drop but since we are kind of on an Eccentric Roll, timing feels appropriate. All 3 are projects that many have asked about. We keep a loose informal tally of vinyl requests and these 3 are currently at the top of the heap.

Cheryl Glasgow - Glued To The Spot b/w Instrumental
Cheryl Glasgow was a major drop for us at the top of last year. Top 5 for me for sure. Vibey Boogie meets Street Soul at it's finest. An absolute ear-worm from its first nylon strums, Glasgow’s Sade-adjacent, jazz vocalese sweeps into a warm-up tempo groove and never quite breaks a sweat. Issued on Ross Anderson’s short-lived, London-based Live label, “Glued To The Spot” swept through the club scene briefly in 1987, disembarking for warmer shores when the season changed.

Dan Boadi - Money Is The Root Of Evil b/w Duodu Wuo Ye Ya
Chicagoland by way of Ghana's own Dan Boadi and the African Internationals gets part 2 of the bundle. Originally released in 1997, we re-released their Money Is The Root Of Evil album in 2020. Recorded at Paul Serrano’s namesake studio on E. 23rd St. in Chicago, Boadi’s U.S. debut showcased the true scope of his musical range; weaving in and out of funk, highlife, afrobeat, and reggae. The title track immediately demands the listener’s attention with a chugging drum lead by The African International’s King Tuch, setting the pace for Boadi’s colorful orchestration to follow. Money Is The Root of Evil claims it’s own space as a musical melting pot and reflects the excitement Boadi was learning to harness as a musician in his newfound home of Chicago. We've trimmed and edited the sprawling 7+ Min originals to get the best bits ripe for dance floors, club or living room.

Junei' - Let's Ride (Original Version) b/w You Must Go On
And finally this major statement piece from Gary, Indiana's Junei'. Willie “Junei” Lee spent the first half of the 1970s playing guitar with his older brother Robert Lee in the self-contained band Lost Weekend, recording a handful of singles and a still unreleased LP. The back half of the decade was spent touring with Albert King, Curtis Mayfield, and The Emotions, before returning home to focus on his own sound. In 1985, Junei’s girlfriend brought home a suite of Fostex home studio gear, including a 12 channel board, 8-track tape machine, and a halftrack for mix downs. He added a Yamaha drum machine and a Maestro echoplex and started his solo project.
“The only artists I listened to was Hendrix and Santana,” Junei said. The emissions coming from his home studio were entirely different, however, as “Let’s Ride” channels the Euro sensibilities of Kraftwerk or Italo over virtuosic guitar. “I just didn’t want to sound like anyone else,” he continued. “Let’s Ride” achieved that differentiation, and managed to anticipate Chicago house by a few years. Pressed in minuscule numbers in 1987 on Pharaohs Records, the 45 never connected with the nearby scenes in Chicago and Detroit where it might have found purchase in fertile soils. Decades later “Let’s Ride” found new life as the bed for KAYTRANADA’s “Scared To Death,” and the track has slowly worked its way through the algorithm to a new generation of vapor huffers. “I am all for experimentation, trying new things, etc,” Junei said. “Kaytranada is a visionary and a talented producer. He has my respect.”
In addition to the bundle, check out the single's available in Color, Clear or Black Wax.

Bonus Content:
The sleeves art for these was done by Eliza Weber who also did the design work for The Chicago Boogie Volume 3 around the illustration from Ben Marcus, who also did Volume 2 and a very rare Numero T-Shirt that I can't even find a picture of.
Eliza's band Tobacco City has also ripped a killer cover of Female Species - Till The Moon Don't Shine which can be heard over at Aquarium Drunkard with some more nice TC cuts.

Book: A Panthers Story - Storia Di Una Pantera by Alberto Zanini

News and preview of a new book by Alberto Zanini from Tesla Groove
TALES FROM THE TIME CAPSULE
Finally done. Following up on Funk Investigators, although no longer with an autobiographical slant but as a real journalistic novel, was not easy task. I hope you will enjoy reading it at least as much as I enjoyed writing it, although I would have preferred to do it in a less complicated period of my life.
I am also happy to announce that, in the coming months, both books Funk Investigators and A Panther's Story will also be published in Spain by Colectivo Bruxista, the most eclectic and underground publishing house in the Country.
Thanks to Carlo Babando (of Blackness fame) for the superb preface. "A Panther's Story" is dedicated to my father, my children and my brothers and sisters (you know who you are). It is also dedicated to liars. There ain't no hole deep enough.

Scroll down for excerpts from both Italian and English editions

A PANTHER'S STORY
English Edition
Hardback - 360 pp.

A Panther on the run. Hunted down by J. Edgar Hoover's Special Agents over one of the most turbulent years in recent American history. Dirty cops, mobsters, civil rights activists, street gangsters, investigative journalists and secret services from Nations afar intertwine in a time capsule on which the Funk Investigators are called to shed a light once again.

Chapter I
Jalon Perry & The DeVonne Brothers
Harlem, April 1969

Jalon Perry was sad to leave New York in a hurry in spring, the most beautiful season for that city, but there was nothing he could do about it. He would have to do without the light green of the first leaves on Mount Morris' oaks and the darker one of the new ivy at St. Nicholas Park. No more spliffs while watching kids shooting basketball at the Rucker Playground. Worst thing was, due to the pace with which events chased each other, he could not even stop by one last time to say adiós, to those places. To promise them he'd be back.

The day before the police stormed the Party’s headquarters, a tip came from a copper who the DeVonne Brothers used to bribe. They imported to the hood some special heroin from Southeast Asia and had run the city's largest clandestine betting ring for decades, the so-called Numbers, so they were always craving for information and protection.

That tip was bad news. Jalon could not allow himself to waver while waiting for them to be confirmed by facts. Not that he was guilty of anything, not anything he had done or anything the cops thought he was going to do, but in those tense times there was no need to actually be guilty. If you were a member of the Black Panthers the cops wanted to arrest, they would have set you up and make it to prove your guilt by all means available. To make certain and demonstrable facts that never happened. So it was better to disappear, and quickly.

The copper's mind wasn't bright about what was going on in those days. He said that strange people were over at 28th Precinct, up in Manhattan North. Folks you’d never seen before, going back and forth from Captain’s office in cheap gray suits instead of standard issue blue uniforms, plotting diagrams on large urban maps of the hood, wide open on the meeting room’s table. Maps of Harlem with notes and symbols scribbled on 7th Avenue and 141st Street, exactly where the Black Panther’s chapter of New York had office.

Established just a year earlier, it was among the younger sections of the Party and its ranks had rapidly grown to make it one of the most important branches in the entire nation. The members had increased exponentially just when the hostilities with security forces had turned in what Jalon Perry and his crew called a real guerrilla. The murders of Malcolm X in '65 right there in Harlem, of Martin Luther King in April of '68 down in Memphis and, two days later, that of Bobby Hutton of the Oakland Panthers had done nothing but increase the fear and the level of self-awareness in all black communities of America. The Black Panthers were taking...

STORIA DI UNA PANTERA
Edizione in Italiano
Brossura - 360 pp.

Jalon Perry & The DeVonne Brothers
Harlem, Aprile 1969

A rendere certi e dimostrabili fatti mai avvenuti.

New Soul Junction 45 - Lamont Johnson & Eugene - Let's Go Dance Tonight / Burnin' For Love - SJ1019

Press Release:   Lamont Johnson & Eugene   “Let’s Go Dance Tonight/Burnin’ For Love” SJ1019
Release Date:  Tuesday 30th August 2022

Eugene Lamont Johnson a.k.a E Lamont Johnson or Lamont Johnson holds the distinction of being the first internationally recognized fretless bassist in R&B music. Born April 20th 1955 in Highland Park, Michigan.

Lamont rose to prominence as a session musician on Gloster Williams & The King Vision’s 1977 gospel album project “Together” (Gospel Roots -5005). In the same year Lamont featured as part of the celebrated Detroit based band Brainstorm and their best-selling 1977 album “Stormin’” for Tabu Records. Brainstorm was initially formed during 1975 by bandleader and saxophonist Charles ‘Chuck’ Overton, and included lead vocalist Belita Woods, Lamont Johnson on Fretless bass, Renell Gonsalves on drums, Trenita ‘Treaty’ Womack on percussion, flute and backing vocals, Bob Ross (a.k.a Professor RJ Ross) on keyboards, Gerald ‘Jerry’ Kent on guitar, Jeryl Bright on trombone and ‘Leaping’ Larry Sims on trumpet and flugelhorn. The album was recorded during 1976 and released the following year. It contained the disco hit “Loving Is Really My Game” the popular “Wake Up And Be Somebody” and the radio hit “This Must Be Heaven” a beautifully crafted ballad featuring the lead vocals of Lamont which still receives continued airplay to this day.  Lamont did not feature on the band’s two subsequent album projects “Journey To The Light” (Tabu 35327) in 1978 and “Funky Entertainment” (Tabu 35749) in 1979.

The year1978 was to prove to be one of the most prolific of Lamont’s recording career, playing bass on three studio albums. Firstly, on Hamilton Bohannon’s “On My Way” (Mercury SRM-i-3710), Jimmy McKee’s “First Time Out” (Champion- 8083N5) and Keith Barrows “Physical Attraction” (Columbia JC-35597) albums respectively. The final project of that year would be Lamont’s own album project “Music Of The Sun” (Tabu-35455) featuring Lamont on both bass guitar and vocals, the album also spawned two lead 45’s “Sister Fine/Yours Truly, Discreetly” and “Hey Girl/Differently”.

During 1979 Lamont would feature as a guest bassist on a further two studio album projects, firstly the self-titled debut album of fellow Detroit musicians Chapter 8 (Ariola 50056) followed by another self-titled album “Nightflyte” (Ariola 50060) who’s line-up included Howard Johnson prior to him embarking on a solo career.

During 1980 Lamont began work on a second solo album for Tabu. Two lead 45 singles were recorded “Rock You Baby/Something More” (Tabu ZS9-5521) followed by the album’s title song “Rhumba” backed with the modern soul favourite “Masta Luva” (ZS9-5525) for whatever reason CBS/Tabu decided to shelve the remainder of the project. Later recording projects to feature Lamont instrumental talents were Was Not Was ‘s “Tell Me I’m Dreaming and Robert Lowe’s “Double Dip” jazz funk album. Later solo CD album projects from Lamont, “This Must Be Heaven” arrived in 2004 and “Amore’ Dance” in 2001 both on his own Allee Records Label.

From the mid 70’s through to the present day, Lamont has been a notable electric bass instructor in the Detroit area and beyond. As well as the previously mentioned projects, Lamont and many of his protégé’s work can be found on many other world renown artists recording projects the most notable being, Earth Wind & Fire, The Dramatics, Anita Baker, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, Phyllis Hyman, Beyonce, Howard Johnson, David T. Walker, Aretha Franklyn, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, The Temptations, The Winans amongst others.
Fast forward to the present and Soul Junction have licensed two previously unissued dance orientated Lamont Johnson produced compositions for this 45 single release with more to come. Under the project/artists name of “Lamont Johnson & Eugene” the recordings feature several different local Detroit musicians and vocalists. The a-side is a male vocally led early 90’s mid-tempo feel good dance number. While the B-side in contrast is a more synthesized bass driven 80’s female dancer which should appeal to the Boogie crowd,
Enjoy.

New Retro Soul 45 Danny Toeman - When the Lights Go Down - LRK Records

Following a 2022 that has seen Danny Toeman sell out headline shows, getting his songs spun by on BBC Radio 2, and supporting the legendary Diana Ross on one of her rare UK performances, the North London Showman is proud to finally commit his most popular and requested live song to vinyl, as nature intended it!

Inspired by the Philly Soul of groups like the O'Jays and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Danny combines an orchestral mix of funk, soul, and disco with a dazzling vocal performance, and wry lyrics about finding the keys to the heart of a woman who just can't be satisfied!

The feel-good track was co-written with David Albury, who is currently starring as Bob Marley in the musical 'Get Up, Stand Up', on London's West End. David contributes backing vocals, alongside Durga McBroom, famed backing vocalist for Pink Floyd. Mixing duties were taken up by Vince Chiarito in New York, whose credits include Black Pumas, and Eli "Paperboy" Reed.

Lamont Dozier R.I.P.

So sad to hear of the passing of Lamont Dozier a real Giant in the world of Motown and Soul Music. He wrote so many wonderful songs, from the days with Eddie and Brian Holland at Motown to going solo in the 70s. His style was something special, he was a real talent with that smooth tone when he sang. R.I.P. Lamont

Black Smoke Band - I'll Keep Searching / Get'n Off - Epsilon Record Co

Out now!
Epsilon 016
BLACK SMOKE BAND: I'LL KEEP SEARCHING  / GET'N OFF - EPSILON RECORD CO.

The Black Smoke Band were comprised of five members
Norwell McNeill on lead vocals (and songwriting duties)
Bobby Moore on bass guitarJames
Jacobs on lead guitar
Joe McLaughlin on keyboards
Ronnie Brewington on drums.
Joe was also the man behind the band’s resources, financing both the musical kit and studio time. All of the members hail from the town of Dunn, North Carolina - a state which has gifted us some amazing soul music from the 1960’s, 1970’s and beyond.
All of the members of the group began recording music prior to the band’s two releases, before they met and formed as teenagers playing local bars, dance halls and night clubs.
They gigged with other local acts.
Both of the band’s releases were recorded in 1977 at Arthur Smith’s Studios in Charlotte - and both released on the group’s own label, Black Smoke Productions.
‘Starting my Life All Over Again’ was the first of two releases, a beautiful sweet soul effort, that really showcases Norwell’s earnest, soulful vocals. The flip is a solid funk cut called ’Skateboard’.
‘I’ll Keep Searching’ b/w ‘Get n Off’ was the second and sadly final release from the group - but what a record it is!
A moody, funky, and compelling arrangement that eschewed the ubiquitous disco sound of the period and created a gritty masterpiece for lovers of hard edged soul music.
Norwell’s gruff, captivating vocal and some stellar guitar work were all laid over a tight, rolling beat accompanied by strong horn stabs.
The pleading, emotional dynamics of the record work brilliantly with its strutting, insistent pace. Delivering both emotionally and musically it was to be the group’s swan song, but left ample evidence of the talent that lay within them as a band.
Eventually the group decided to go their separate ways in 1978, although that was not the end of their musical careers, with all of the members continuing to perform in and around North Carolina for many years.
Ronnie sadly passed away, but the other four original members of the group are still actively making music, with Norwell and Bobby remaining in regular contact today.
Bobby played with Kool & The Gang for a brief spell, alongside other well known acts. Joe continues to run his own studio, and has a large back catalogue of previously unheard material recorded both before and after the Black Smoke years.
That is the story of the Black Smoke Band in 1977.
Although short lived, the group have provided soul fans across the UK and beyond with two fabulous singles, considered by many to be shining examples of the musical talent that coursed through America’s suburbs and communities during the golden age of soul and funk music.
A rich vein of talent which remains largely undiscovered even now...

New 45 - Ruby Winters - I Can't Help But Love You - Creative Soul

News of an upcoming release available for pre-ordering right now from Creative Soul Records from Cliff Steele aka member @Wrongcrowd
Ruby Winters - I Can't Help But Love You / If Only (We Had Met Sooner) - Creative Soul 1001
After much sleuthing it was incredible to have confirmation from George Kerr that he was the creative genius behind a track that blew me away on first hearing some years ago. It’s with thanks to the kind permission of George that we can now share some of his magic as a limited vinyl release. Ruby Winters – I Can’t Help But Love You / If Only (We Had Met Sooner) will be available to order from Creative Soul Records on August 1st, mailing from 13th August.
Due to be released on the 13th August this Creative Soul label debut is a strong release, sleeve notes follow below...
George Kerr and Ruby Winters were riding high in the US R&B charts in 1967. George had hits that year with The O’Jays and Linda Jones; Ruby had scored a hit for Diamond Records with ‘I Want Action’. George’s production talent brought him to the attention of Diamond Records, and was introduced to the label owner, Phil Kahl by his friend Teddy Van, who was a staff producer for the label. So the scene was set for a pairing of these two immense talents, and recording sessions were scheduled to include another of Diamond’s artists, Johnny Thunder, who had previously recorded duets with Ruby.
Recording studio time was expensive, so rehearsals were arranged at Harlequin Studios, West 46th Street, New York, which George fondly remembered as being his ‘go to’ studio for pre-recording rehearsals. The recording session followed at Allegro Sound Studio, 1650 Broadway, New York.
The musicians involved in the session reads like a who’s who of black music talent, and included
Eric Gale (guitar), Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie (drums), Cornell Dupree (guitar), Richard Tee (piano), and Margaret Ross (harp). Background vocals were provided by Richard Poindexter, Robert Poindexter, and George Kerr. The magic of George Kerr’s production and Richard Tee’s arrangement resulted in just one 45 release, ‘We Have Only One Life’. George recalled that he had Ruby listen to some of his work on Linda Jones to demonstrate the sound he was looking for, and several of these songs were recorded in the session, ‘Last Minute Miracle’, ‘I Can’t Help But Love You’ and ‘If Only (We Had Met Sooner)’.
Here for the first time on vinyl with kind permission of George Kerr are two of those tracks.

Hey America! The Epic Story of Black Music and the White House - Stuart Cosgrove

Out now the latest book from Stuart Cosgrove, renowned professional journalist, broadcaster, award winning author and long-time Soul Source member
Hey America!: The Epic Story of Black Music and the White House
Continuing his examination of American soul music, this time the focus is on 'the complex relationship between American music and politics'.

'An erudite and deeply passionate dive into the complex relationship between American music and politics' - Sean O'Hagan, The Observer
Publishers release notes
Hey, America! is the story of how black music came from the margins of American life in the early twentieth century through to the mainstream under Barack Obama’s presidency and then was mobilised as a force for radical opposition to Donald Trump’s presidency.
Embedded in the story is the triumph of black music over the many forces that had held it back – racism, segregation, undercapitalised record labels, media discrimination and political anxiety.
Opening with President Obama’s tribute to Prince, the author takes us through the spat between Louis Armstrong and President Eisenhower, Eartha Kitt’s encounter with Lady Bird Johnson, the Vietnam War’s influence on soul, James Brown’s flirtation with Nixon, the impact of Hurricane Katrina, Ice-T’s ‘Cop Killer’ scandal, Public Enemy and the rise of hip-hop, the Washington Wives versus ‘porn rock’, Kanye West running for presidency and many, many others.
The book concludes with the dramatic stand-off between Trump and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Soul Source 25 years...

Another day, another first of the month...
August 2022
25 years ago, the summer of 1997, the Soul Source website was first published on the internet
As always the plan around this time of year is to mark this anniversary occasion with some sort of event/post/happening
But as always with this plan, the event kind of sneaks up on us and as just not enough hours in the day the plans never really come together.
However, as this time it's a bit of major landmark, a few things will occur that will reflect/mark this 25 year landmark
Anyway for now as it's the first of the month, just a quick initial note to mark this event, and pass on thanks to all who have helped us reach this landmark over the years.
More later

Masterpieces Of Modern Soul Vol 6 is released today (29 July 2022)
Masterpieces Of Modern Soul Vol 6 - Various Artists
Genre: Modern Soul Label: Kent Format: CD Catalogue Id: CDKEND 512
The latest release in this much-acclaimed series offers a great deal, with an emphasis on quality including12 previously unreleased tracks.

Release notes from Ace Records follow below
Release Notes
The latest volume in our acclaimed Masterpieces Of Modern Soul series is as strong as ever and drips with brand new, old recordings. An amazing 12 tracks are previously unheard and a further two are very different versions of already popular numbers.
Some rare-soul household names have new material featured on here. Ronnie McNeir hits a wicked dance groove with ‘Let’s Make A Move’ and Dee Ervin offers a superbly soulful ‘You Make Me Happy’ – sure to become a modern classic. The lesser-known Joe Graham’s ‘Higher Than High’ is already halfway there, thanks to advance plays in Europe from DJ Dave Thorley. It’s from an Atlanta session around 1976, in-between his Chant and later Hotlanta releases. Jean Shy is a highly-thought of artist who recorded firstly in Chicago and later in L A. ‘What Tomorrow Brings’ was cut in the latter city, under the auspices of Kent Harris; it’s a very classy midtempo jazz-infused number. Ramona King had her best-known records in the 60s but ‘Happy Times’ was recorded in the Bay Area’s GSR studios in the 70s and is a laid-back gem.
We’ve drifted into the late 70s / early 80s disco sound with numbers found on tape that were just crying out to be heard. Joe Simon cut the unknown group Cynic on ‘I Want You’ at Spring early in 1982. Detroit’s Exportations very catchy ‘Second Time Around’ and the equally fast, funky and fantastic ‘Have A Good Time’ by Atlanta’s Maggabrain were laid down in the late 70s as was Fox Fire’s ‘Don’t Play Me Cheap’. The early 80s is the likely era for Melanie Burke’s ‘I Can’t Turn You Down’ – which, like the McNeir and Hodges James & Smith offerings, were Mickey Stevenson productions made in L A.
We have lifted three great LP-only tracks from 1975 Fantasy albums by Janice, Betty Everett and Three Pieces: they fit so well into the compilation. Margie Joseph singing a Willie Tee song called ‘Nobody’ is virtually guaranteed to be great music. It is still for sale at a reasonable price - as opposed to the arm and a leg you’ll need to offer for ‘You Done Let The Daylight Catch You’ by Second Re$surection.
We found a quite different vocal take for Phillip Mitchell’s ‘I’ll See You In Hell First’ and a much longer version of Dave Hamilton’s ‘Who’ as recorded by the unknown Jackie Dee – it was remixed from the master tape. Another Dave Hamilton song ‘Must Have Had Company’ by Elayne Starr has only appeared on one of the later Dave Hamilton CDs - well worthy of a rewind for modern soul movers. The highly talented west coast producer George Semper gives us ‘Doo Doop Dee Deep Doot Doo’ which owes a lot to the Sly Stone sound of the time and is similarly enthralling. There’s some moody Bay Area jazz-soul from the Karen Sanders Group; recorded in the 70s but only ever available on a 2011 US LP. Finally, we have yet another top quality, unheard 70s soul recording from Joe Hinton who had many tracks abandoned and left in the vault when Atlanta’s GRC records crashed due to the nefarious behaviour of its owner.

New 45 - The Turbines - We Got To Start Over - Soul Direction Origins

A new release from Soul Direction imprint Origins
The Turbines - We Got To Start Over - (Soul Direction Origins) 1006A
Here's the release spiel...
Soul Direction Records are pleased to announce the next instalment in the "Origins" family.
The Turbines - "We Got To Start Over"/ "What More Can I Say" - (Soul Direction Origins)  SDO-1006
Release Date: August 2022

Very little is known at all about the Turbines or indeed the Cenco Label.
The almost "David Ruffin" feel to the lead singers voice made "We Got To Start Over" an instant
dance floor winner from around the "Top of The World" era of the 80s and 90s to this day and still
remains a constant on many wants lists. As you would expect an elusive and rare 45 to own in it's
original form.
The only other track they performed for the label is the also very rare Fred And The Turbins -
"Bernadine" which we assume is the same group with slightly different spelling. This has been a
Northern Soul dance floor winner since the late 80s.
Soul Direction bring you this first ever UK release fully Licensed from Resnik Music with all licensing
and publishing rights paid.

Sleeve Notes
Very little is known at all about the Turbines or indeed the Cenco Label. Here is what we think we know:
Cenco Records was a Label from Hollywood California, Owned by Mike Gradney (AKA Mike Gradny)
Mike Gradney (Gradny), a Los Angeles veteran had previously been A&R man at Larry Mead's Vita/Mambo labels and had managed Mead's Perfection Plastics pressing plant.
Gradney supposedly' started his Spry label in 1957 and Cenco came along some time in the 1960s. Judging by the constant appearance of "Class Publishing" on Cenco labels we can only assume Class was also a Gradney company although as far as we know, it was nothing to do with Leon Rene's Class Records.
Cenco records ran from around 1961 to 1969 with around a couple of dozen released 45s and one album by Ike and Tina Turner but the connection is not crystal clear although the use of "Placid Music" which appears on some of the Duo's early Sue recordings may be the answer. The label issued mostly bluesy driven songs but there were some odd exceptions including these 2 tracks plus Shades of Jade - "Is It Wrong" and Carbo Brothers - "What Can I Give Her".
The only other track they performed for the label is the also very rare Fred And The Turbins - "Bernadine" which we assume is the same group with slightly different spelling. This has been a Northern Soul dance floor winner since the late 80s
The almost "David Ruffin" feel to the lead singers voice made "We Got To Start Over" an instant dance floor winner from around  the "Top of The World" Stafford era of the 80s and 90s to this day and still remains a constant on many wants lists. As you
would expect an elusive and rare 45 to own in it's original form.
