Detroit My Home Town - A Vinyl Lp from Hayley Records

Detroit hold a special place in the world of soul music.  For many it is considered the capitol of soul music amongst collectors.  It is a very emotive and subjective argument of course but Detroit does hold a special place in the heart of the Rare, Northern Soul scene.  Partly because of the accessibility from the very early days with many acts having travelled to the UK since the 1960s to the present day but largely because of the depth of quality music from a myriad of labels all out to grab a part of the black music scene in Detroit dominated by Motown right through the 1960s.

Richard "Popcorn" Wylie @ in the UK

Hayley Records, based in Coventry owned and operated by Rob Moss and is a UK label dedicated to unearthing and releasing previously unissued material recorded largely from Detroit, by and large from the 1960s but also the 1970s.
2020 marks the labels 20th anniversary and to mark the occasion its first vinyl LP has been released.

Entitled “Detroit: My Home Town” it features a dozen tracks from the aforementioned City, 9 having seen the light of day on previous 45 releases from Hayley whilst for 3 tracks this LP is their first outing.
J.J. Barnes, one of Detroit’s best loved artists kicks off the album with Lucille.  This received some turntable action vias Dean Anderson over the years after the reel to reel tapes were unearthed and some “acetates” cut.  The Stylists caused a stir when it was released a couple of years ago.  The Perfections feature with their take on Tony Hestor’s “Just Can’t Leave You”.
Other tracks that featured on Hayley 45s are Tony Hestor with his version of ”Keep A Hold On Me”. A female take surfaced some years ago with Diane Lewis on vocal duty.  Mid-tempo reigns supreme with Bobby Sheppard & Surely & the slightly more up-tempo Gilford & Shruggs with “Don’t Let Me Lose It” which if memory serves had turntable action years ago when an acetate surfaced?  Deon Jackson, one of Detroit’s greats with “I’ve Got So Much Love”, Sharon McMahan with her take of the song she penned, “I Have No Choice” that was released by Johnnie Mae Matthews and Jimmy Delphs are the final three sides that saw a 45 release via Hayley.  Jimmy Delphs surfaced a few years ago when the guitarist appeared on Soul Source and sent the track to some members which was then cut to disc by an enterprising few and played to dancefloors up and down the UK.
The album features three previously unissued tracks.  Jimmy Guildford with a cut that was intended for Thelma Records, “All Over and Done”.  Northern Soul Royalty in the shape of Rose Batiste is next with “It’s Not What You Say (But How You Say It)”.  Recorded at Golden World, we are not sure what label it was intended for but thankfully Hayley brought this fine mid-tempo offering to vinyl.
Mention the Detroit Soul scene or indeed Northern Soul and Popcorn Wylie won’t be far from the conversation.  He features with one of the scene’s perennial favourites and one that has featured throughout all the eras of the scene “Going To A Happening”.  However, this is minus Tommy Neal’s vocals but does feature the backing vocals, provided by Popcorn himself, the sound engineers Ed Wulfrum and Danny Dallas and the Lewis Sisters, Pat & Diane.
The album comes on nice thick vinyl and if you love good old fashioned Northern Soul or the more soulful sound of Detroit this is a worthy addition to any collection and has received very favourable review and plays amongst DJs on radio and “live” on other outlets since its release.
Look out for other 45 releases as Rob aka @Rob Mossand Hayley Records continue to celebrate 20 years of quality unreleased soul music.

Emma Noble - Table Dancers - New Single Out Now

Just been passed on details of a new release from Emma Noble, whose last release went down rather well with some.
It looks like a digital release right now from Cosmos Music with an ep to follow at the end of the month, here's the press blurb...
UK Soul DJ, Emma Noble, releases new song ’Table Dancers’

British singer/songwriter and DJ Emma Noble debuted in the lockdown Summer of 2020 with her first single “No Turning Back”. For her second single, Noble made a bold move, taking on a rare Marvin Gaye track “Woman of The World'' because of its relevant and important lyrical theme about female empowerment.
Both Noble’s previous releases were enthusiastically embraced by the British soul scene and gained support from many well-known radio personalities such as Craig Charles, Lauren Lavern, Tony Blackburn, Norman Jay MBE, Gary Crowley, Robert Elms & Eddie Piller.
Now comes the release of Noble's muchly anticipated next single 'Table Dancers' - an original composition about one of her favourite hobbies; dancing on tables, she shouldn't be dancing on. Set for release on November 6th.

“Table Dancers' is the beat driven, fast paced track, written solely to make you dance and let loose... (preferably on tables), Emma says, it’s all about encouraging people to embrace their inner rascal.”

Her EP will follow on November 27th featuring all 3 tracks, plus, remixes by Smoove (of Smoove & Turrell), Emma Noble

Hit and Run Records - 2 New Releases - Marvin Smith and Coco & Ben

Announcing 2 recent releases on the Hit and Run label :
HR 1521 MARVIN SMITH - Heartache Comin' On / Hearts Made Of Stone
Two totally wonderful mid-70s Chicago previously unreleased tracks - A-side is a classic Chicago midpacer, B-side a super super ballad. After all his iconic Artistics and later solo sides, we all know Marvin's ability as a vocalist; both sessions here are self-produced and arranged by the great Tom Washington with The Kitty Haywood Singers backing. Marvin spent so much money on the sessions he couldn't then manage to get them released till over 40 years later.
That's it for the sale blurb folks - this deal took 7 months to get over the line, I hope you like it.
HR 1522 - COCO and BEN - Good Feelin' / See The World
A totally wonderful Memphis indie 45 from 1979. First brought to these shores by Arthur Fenn around 1982, very limited copies of this ever surfaced. Last seen on ebay over 7 years ago, now must be in the £1,500 region. A few carvers seem to exist around £20 - you can buy a legitimate release here for £12 - Coco is alive and living in Memphis and the advance royalties have gone directly to her. Brilliant female vocal - still sounds as great to me today as it did when I first heard it all those years ago from a Robin Salter cassette.
Here's a youtube link with an enthusiastic narrative from JM

The flipside 'See The World' is pretty good too - and here's Ted's youtube

£12 each + £3 UK postage; simply paypal - hitandrunsoul45@gmail.com  ( UK postage £3.00 / EU postage (untracked) £4.00 - is good for 1-3 records)

New 45 - Rose Marie McCoy & Helen Miller - North Broad St Records

News just in from Colin Law aka @Lawman about the second North Broad St Release...
Rose Marie McCoy & Helen Miller - Teardrops and Heartaches - North Broad St Records NBS002BL
We have hooked up with Mind UK, the Mental Health Charity, where we will be donating from the profits from this release. Rose Marie McCoy & Helen Miller were highly respected song writers. The Brill Building in the New York offices was mainly where they both worked together. Travelling back and forward to Detroit, where they worked with Golden World and Revilot, iconic northern soul label, with credits appearing on, Our Love is in the Pocket, I’m Spellbound and many others. They both also worked with Maxine Brown, Freddie Scott, Jerry Butler and Chuck Jackson who worked at Sceptre-Wand. They also provided several of the songs for Lenny Welch, Sarah Vaughan, Tommy Hunt including many others. Teardrops Heartaches is presented from a McCoy and Miller demo acetate, more than likely for one of the above artists, unfortunately never released until now. We have re-engineered the demo to achieve the best quality from the recording, and once again our engineer has done us proud. The massive powerful slab of midtempo monster I personally see as you enter at the end of the set, a true all-nighter in Britain or Europe, It is that good, I hope you all agree
Bruce Cloud – Where did we go wrong - North Broad St Records NBS002BL
The reason we have chosen the Mind UK Charity is for personal reasons as well as Bruce himself. His story touched us with the words to his last song being very sad. This was his last ever recording in the studio, yet again another unreleased track. He did have a couple of northern soul hits on Era and an album track. Unfortunately, Bruce suffered from mental health issues which led to him becoming disillusioned with the music industry and he gave up recording music, going on to work in a chemist until he sadly took his own life. Sadly, a good friend of mine who was heavily involved within the soul scene we all love, also tragically took his own life. I feel this record is a poignant reminder to talk to your family and friends, its ok not to be ok.

A Review of Dave Godin A Northern Soul Book

Dave Godin A Northern Soul, a biography by Stephen Stevlor.
Review by Damian Conaghan.............. aka Dim @Dim

Those of us who regard ourselves as Soul Music fans have heard of Dave Godin. My introduction to him, along with many of my peers, was via his column, during the early 1970s, in Blues & Soul magazine, where his musings gave due weight to the beauty of the music we love. A few of our number got to meet him and a few got to know him to varying degrees. But I never met him and, beyond his stellar reputation, his coining of the phrase 'Northern Soul' and the whole legend of Soul City, I knew very little about him as an individual. So when this book became available I bought it without hesitation, hoping it would put some flesh on the bones of the reputation and provide some sense of what Dave Godin was about as a "person". What the book delivers is an enthralling, fascinating and, at times, contentious view of the man himself.
In his Introduction, Stephen Stevlor states that what he imagined to be a project that could be completed in months actually took him years to put to bed. You can see why for this is a substantial body of work running to just short of 450 pages.
The layout of the book is interesting in and of itself. As well as the narrative the book is peppered with a variety of images, all relevant and all working well to assist and augment the unfolding story. Of great interest to me are the numerous Dave Godin Top 10 charts, wherein some of his choices may cause eyebrows to be raised. The written pages are produced in a variety of colours and, in a way that I can't fully explain, helped to make my journey through the book that little bit easier.
The admiration and love for his subject shines through Stevlor's prose, which is at once immensely readable without ever descending into a fact based diatribe or a hero worshipping paean to Godin. There are a number of wonderful contributions from a selection of those who knew him... more of which later.
So, to the content...
Stevlor takes us from Godin's childhood in South London, where he became aware at an early age that he was 'different'. His vegetarian conversion and realisation of his homosexuality are covered but not in any laboured way. His principled anti war stance, his passion for animal rights, his deep dislike of censorship, his atheism and his anarchic thinking are all there as the book develops. We have great detail on the Dave Godin that earned the reputation we have come to take almost for granted. From his "road to Damascus" moment in a cafe (jukebox) that he frequented regularly after school ..... Ruth Brown's "(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean". The whole Tamla Motown Appreciation Society story, Soul City, the shop and the record label, are well covered as you would expect.
From my perspective however, the move to Sheffield, via Lincoln, the events at the Polytechnic, the Anvil Cinema, which provided the perfect vehicle to share his love of film, the contributions to the Sheffield Alternative Magazine, his relationship with senior management at the City Council and his eventual departure, was totally new to me and served to add layers to the already complex and complicated character of Godin being explored in the book. His return to Soul and the Northern Scene is extensively covered, including his somewhat disputatious relationship with Ian Levine and his move to Black Music magazine, which also plays a part in the Mecca v Casino 'feud'. Mary Chapman (and Cleethorpes) also plays an important role in that her view of Godin is a little different to some others....albeit very positive. His great pride and pleasure in seeing the release of the Deep Soul Treasures lights up the pages, as does his great relationship with Ady Croasdell as they worked tirelessly to get it done via Ace Kent.
The section of the book that covers the period from the onset of his illness through to, and in the immediate aftermath of his passing, meticulously described by Stevlor with contributions from those who were witnesses to events, makes for quite poignant and (at times) distressing reading. But the account of his funeral, and the celebration of his life that followed, is uplifting The play lists of the DJ's who illuminated that evening are included in the final chapter.
I mentioned earlier the contributions in the book by those who knew him. There are a couple I'd like to refer to specifically.
The first is by Sean Hampsey, which in it's warmth and admiration of Godin really encapsulates the reverence and high regard that Soul people feel for him. Diggin Deep 007 was dedicated to the memory of Dave Godin. (Jaibi... It Was Like A Nightmare c/w  You Make Me Feel Good.)
Contrast this with the recollections of David Patmore and and Jane Edwards of Sheffield City Council, which are less than favourable, and you have a conundrum to address.
When I finished reading the book I found myself pondering who Dave Godin really was.  A man of principal and passion. An articulate and lucid thinker. A man possessed of great generosity and compassion. But also a man who could be dogmatic, at times very despotic, taciturn and unforgiving.
A Godin quote...
"I have always stressed in my opinion that true Soul appreciation springs from the heart rather than the brain"
Godin leaves a rich legacy and very prominent in this is that the Soul Scene is blessed with people like Ady Croasdell, Sean Hampsey & Kev Briscoe and Garry J Cape who carry on the standard set by him in the pure Soulfulness of what they do and that they do it in the right way.
This is an important book in my eyes. Not just for the story it tells but also for the fact, as with most good biographies, it leaves you wondering about the unanswered questions it poses.
Stephen Stevlor deserves great credit for this biography. I cannot tell you how pleased I am to have it on my bookshelf.

Nick "Driveller" Brown Sessions 2001
Notes below all from that time... 2001
To coincide with the forthcoming Notre Dame event on Feb 16th at Leicester Square London, we have the fortune to have two great session's selected by your man Nick "Driveller" Brown, promoter and dj at the event which is happening on the 16 Feb 2001.
Session 1
PIC AND BILL : WHAT DOES IT TAKE (CHARAY)
Merciless northern soul scorcher that's remained inexplicably unknown till now.  another spot-on killer from the best male duo in soul music.
DOC &THE INTERNS : THE LOVE THAT YOU GIVE (EDGEWOOD ACETATE)
Thunderous dc floorshaker, presumably recorded for now but left in the backroom.  Absolutely made for the scene, with its piledriver beat, wall-quaking bass and football-chant chorus.  It's even got a bit near the end for the acrobats to show off their stuff.  Did they know something?
MARGARET MANDOLPH: If You Ever Need Me (PLANETARY)
One of four excellent sides Margaret recorded for Planetary.  This is from the earlier 45, from November '64, and is a lovely, atmospheric mid-tempo stepper.
EDDIE GILES: Losing Boy (MUCRO)
Unbelievably, a big hit with the ravers at the Heavenly Social a few years ago, but virtually unknown on the Northern scene.  If you're quick, you might still get this cheap, so look out for this driving, staxy mid-pacer with its air of chin-up determination and gritted-teeth optimism. Builds like a skyscraper.
SHIRLEY EDWARDS: Dream My Heart ( SHRINE)
The version originally used for the single, for the benefit of those who have only heard it on the CD.  My number one all-time favourite record of any sort, EVER!
ANITA ANDERSON: Secretly (CONTACT)
Flip of the wonderful "Little Bit Longer", and often cited as being the more "Northern" side.  Here's a chance to hear it if you haven't yet.  Check out the 3-D echo on that break!

SESSION 2

THE FOUR REPUTATIONS: Call On Me (MILLAGE)
Definitely NOT the same record as the Presentations, despite what people say on their sales lists!  A pressing plant slip-up meant this never got a release but thank goodness SOME of the copies escaped the crusher! Absolutely perfect allnighter Soul.
THE EXCEPTIONS: Baby You Know I Need You (IMPACT SOUND acetate)
A cross over in-demander on its 68 release on Groovey Grooves, but this is the unreleased original version from 66 and it KICKS!!!! the classic sound of mid 60s Philly epitomised in two minutes of dancefloor dynamite!
JEAN DU SHON: It Won't Stop Hurting Me (LENNOX)
Her okeh piece is going seriously big with the r+b fans , but I've always rated this as her best moment. Sophisticated Big City Soul with just a touch of raw edge, all wrapped up in a smooth, mid tempo flow of impassioned yearning. Had a couple of copies in the 80s , but haven't seen another for about 10 years. Serious class
GALLAHADS : I've Got To Find A Way (BEECHWOOD)
Irrepressible group dancer bursting with energy and sprirt, plus that irresistable "wait for it " intro. Been a popular sound with the newies crowd for a good few years, but this i one's real day is still to come.
DON AND JUAN: All That's Missing Is You (MALA)
Tasty portion of Early Soul from the ever reliable Claude and Roland. Highly rated by many since the Stafford era, but it's another one that's still waiting for the exposure it needs to make it cross over
TRANELLS: My Love - (Cover-up)
One of those raw primitive recording that you take one listen to and you just KNOW how rare it is but once you cut through the three layers of carpet around the microphone and the tin bath it was recorded in , you've got a relentlessly hypnotic dancer tat drives along on a insistent hook and boasts a creditably sound vocal. Puts me in mind of a group reworking of Silky Hargreaves "Hurt by Love". Hauntingly atmospheric with an addictive riff.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------

All the above 6 Pacs and the previous ones featured in the earlier article are now stored on mixcloud.
Hope you enjoyed this revisit as much as I did!

Dave Godin A Northern Soul Part 2

From the author Stephen Stevlor, a catchup all about how the release of Dave Godin A Northern Soul is going ...
Within days of being made available, (launched 15th October 2020, the 16th anniversary of Dave's passing), over a third of this limited edition 1000 print book had been mailed nationwide and throughout the world with books shipping to Norway, Finland, Holland, Italy, Spain, Australia, Canada, USA and Japan.
"I knew the book would be of interest because it wasn't just a collection of stories and anecdotes about the Northern Soul scene but concerned a specific character who, although many people in the Soul world were aware of, many of the Northern Soul foot soldiers or, as Dave would call them "the TRUE keepers of the faith!", had little or no idea of this man's importance or existence.
This was one of the reasons the biography came about, I got the impression that he wasn't as high profile as he should have been within a scene that he'd given a specific identity to. Plus there were the other facets of his life that unless you were involved in animal rights, or civil rights or the hundreds of other causes Dave championed, you just wouldn't have been aware of. Dave Godin had many sides, to some he was a true gentleman, to others a complete tyrant. Some people loved him without reserve while others, whom I attempted to interview, hated him so much they wouldn't even take the opportunity to destroy him in print, they didn't even want to mention his name. When the book came out I had a lovely letter from a lady who knew Dave back in the day and she mentioned she actually owned a lock of his hair! I immediately imagined, maybe, some kind of romantic liason, while a DJ friend of mine commented "or maybe she just ripped it out of his head when he pissed her off!" Personally, from the impression she gave, I'm sticking with the former!"
COMMENTS FROM BOOK PURCHASES:
"A great book about the Godfather of Soul!"
"Congratulations on what is an enthralling, absorbing and thoroughly entertaining book."
"The story itself is excellent and covers all the bases of this man's extraordinary life."
"A beautiful book, congratulations".
"Should make a film about it."
"What an achievement, this book is part of Northern Soul Biblical history!"
"The Covid 19 pandemic messed up my promo plans, having to cancel signing events at all-nighters and weekenders around the country. Copies of the biography weren't going to be available in book shops and record stores until nearer Christmas so I was surprised to see it listed on well-known internet book sites offering the book for sale and ready to order when they hadn't actually approached me to discuss stocking it. Some had even taken payment in advance, so I would like to make it clear that these bookstores DO NOT have the book so don't pay them anything. Because of this I've started supplying stock to selected Independent shops in various UK towns and cities, limiting it to just one or two depending on the size of the area-
Tallbird Records  Chesterfield
Beatin' Rhythm  Manchester
Mark Windle  Leeds
Soulmine Aldershot
Stars-and-Stripes  Skegness
LP Record Store and Spinning Discs Sheffield.
Any Independent interested in stocking the book, please email me."
"A lot of people seemed surprised by the quality of the book and the production values. I think they expected pages of smudgy text on pulp paper with a few photographs thrown in. It is a very good looking book and a lot of time was spent making sure, wherever possible, that all the avenues of Dave's life were well illustrated. As somebody commented the other day, "It's a coffee table book that fits on a bookshelf!"

Motown 45 Numbering - Ain't That The Truth!

An article Steve Armitage, and I, wrote in 1993 ... explaining the number system
Ain't That The Truth!
The Motown DM Master System
By Steve Armitage & Andy Rix Acknowledgements To Ron Murphy (Detroit)
Have you ever wondered what the letters and figures on your Motown 45's stand for? Obviously there is the issue number (e.g. Motown 1056), but there are also other numbers, different on every side of every record.
Examples might look like this:-
DM 003222 / DM-V 038221 / DM-J 084103
DM-WLB 098112 / DM-BLL 134324
Gradually, by late 1965 the DM is dropped, leaving the number/letter sequence like this:-
HLI 192313
If by now you're wondering "why do I care?" - Then as an avid collector, you might be interested in exactly how much music remains to be unearthed from the Motown vaults. You will be staggered!
D.M. stands for Duplicate Master. As tracks were mixed down from original session tapes (not part of the D.M. series) and saved for issue (or rejection) Motown needed a method of filing and retrieving it's mixed tapes.
During 1962 a series of letters were also added to the D.M. system. As listed in issue 7, these letters relate to the producer of the tracks in question. Later on further letters were added to the master number and these relate to the control room engineer who worked on the mixing session and the mixer (often the producer). In some instances the same letter is repeated within the master number and this indicates that the same person was responsible for more than one of these functions. Let us take some examples of this:-
DM WLL-115307: The Temptations - "It's Growing"
This track was produced by Smokey Robinson, which is represented by the letter "W", and was engineered and mixed by L. T. Horn, whose code was represented by the letter "L".
It is to be found on Duplicate Master tape 115. The tape is on 10 1/2 inch reel which contains some 3600 feet of 1/2  inch tape. Recorded at 7 1/2 inches per second, it will hold up to 95 minutes of music. There are three tracks on the tape (known as 3-track multitrack tape). Let us assume that between 20 and 30 songs of 2 to 3 minutes (Motown rarely used longer!) can be recorded per track. Simply each D.M. tape will contain some 60-90 tracks. The song "It's Growing" by The Temptations is to be found as follows:-
TAPE 115       TRACK 3         SONG 07 (On The Track)
Another example that illustrates where a different mixer and studio engineer were used is:-
WIL-179312: Marvin Gaye - "One More Heartache"
Again produced by Smokey Robinson and mixed by the same person who was responsible for the mixing of "It's Growing" by The Temptations (L. T. Horn), this track was however engineered by a different person, who is represented by the letter "I".
It is interesting to note however that whilst Motown continued using this type of prefix through until the early Seventies, the codes were used for different producers during different periods of time. Examples of this can be traced to recordings using the letter "V" as the producer prefix. This letter represents the studio work of Brian Holland on recordings that were made up to 1968, whilst this same letter was also used for the studio work by Mike Valvano in the 1970's.
Now comes the fun. By the middle of 1966 some 214 of these Duplicate Master tapes had been registered. 214 multiplied by an average of a conservative 60 songs equals a staggering 12840 songs! Motown issued around 1200 separate tracks in the same period. So now we might have a 10-1 ratio of tracks 'In The Can'. Obviously this figure includes several mixes of each song, but our guess is that at least two titles are in the vault for each one known on disc. This is born out by the fact that the Jobete catalogue has a ratio of 70% of unissued titles.
At some point during 1966 Motown changed its recording procedures with the introduction of  1 /4" twin channel (left and right) tapes for mixing sessions, following the demise of 3-track multitrack use. These recorded at 15" per second and held between 10 and 14 songs, dependent on length of the recordings. This series of duplicate masters began with D.M. 215  and was continued through until 1973, following Motown's re-location on the West Coast, with D.M. 1019 being the final tape registered - a total  of 804 different tape reels.
An example from this series is:-
H-XK-V-240M05: The Supremes - "You Keep Me Hangin' On".
This is to be found on duplicate master 240. It was mixed in mono (represented by the letter "M") and is the fifth track on this tape (05). The track was produced by Brian Holland & Lamont Dozier (H).
Another example is:-
F-I-I-505S02:  Tammi Terrell - "Just Too Much To Hope For".
This track was mixed from the original session tape onto Duplicate Master 505, and was mixed in stereo, which is represented by the letter "S'', and this is the second track on this tape (02). It was produced by Harvey Fuqua (F).
Towards the end of this series it had become commonplace for promotional singles white label releases to feature the same song on both sides with the mono version on one side and the stereo version on the other. In some tracks cases consecutive were used as illustrated in the following example:-
M9-Ll-Ll-1013S02: David Ruffin - "Blood Donor's Needed"
(Used on promotional copies of Motown 1223-A)
M9-Ll-Ll-1013M03: David Ruffin - "Blood Donor's Needed"
(Used on the commercial release of Motown 1223-A)
There are a number of recordings that list a master number that includes the letter "S" for stereo, whilst they are in fact in mono. It should be noted that while these recordings were cut in mono the representation within the master number refers to the recording on the tape, and not the final cut, i.e. stereo mix/cut in mono.
Many of Motown's 1960's Detroit music producers are alive and well and living in America in 1993. Good health, and thanks guys!!!!

Well as I said the original post stirred my interest and after reading the post I enquired about their 'Flattening Service' and after getting instructions sent off a quite badly warped 45.
A few days later I got it back, the warp was not completely gone but the 45 plays fine with hardly no up/down movement, and was more than happy, It was a low three figure value 45 and so the cost of £12 plus postage for a 'upgraded' 45 was a hit with me.

Photo of the 45 'before'

Photo of the 45 at the same angle 'after'

Certainly, much much better results than any of the various diy methods that I have used in the past. So I would suggest that if you do have any damaged vinyl then it may just be worth giving them a tap to see if can help.

You can find the Vinyl Rescue Uk site over at https://www.vinylrescueuk.com/

I Am Tru Starr - Somethings Gotta Change - Track/Album Details

Got the below press release sent in a few weeks ago coupled with a private listen of a track that my ears certainly enjoyed. As the track 'Somethings Gotta Change' is now out as a single and publicly available to all, plus it's part of an upcoming album, a quick shout of the details and the listens follows below...
Press Release
I Am Tru Starr is the real deal – an artist who creates songs which truly encapsulate his feelings, such is the case with his brand new single, Something’s Gotta Change, a track which he hopes will hit home with this generation like Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On did in the 1970s. Taken from his forthcoming album, Viva, Something’s Gotta Change is I Am Tru Starr’s own take on soul and hip-hop, tackling issues at the very heart of Black Lives Matter. I Am Tru Starr speaks from experience – having spent five years in a federal prison, he treats his songs as a means of paying back his debt to society – with Something’s Gotta Change, no-one can deny that the emotion and message hits the mark.
Listen to ‘Something’s Gotta Change’

Press Release

Originally from Rochester, New York and now living in Las Vegas, I Am Tru Starr is surrounded by the best and worst elements of what it means to be alive in 2020 as a young black man. Something’s Gotta Change is a track which I Am Tru Starr sees as a comment on society everywhere: “This society is sedated and I wanna do my part in waking ‘em up. It’s about time real music got the light it deserves. No politics. No label tricks. No big city backing. My family explained to me when I was young that Emmett Till (whose lynching was a major influence on the emergence of Black Rights in 50s and 60s America) was a distant cousin, and what he went through has always helped to fuel the passion in my music”.

Something’s Gotta Change is the first track to be released from I Am Tru Starr’s forthcoming album, VIVA, which he describes as a celebration of life and all the important things in it that make it worth living –good, bad and ugly. With an immersive 70s-style funk sprinkled melody; strolling, infectious rhythm and lyrics which strike at the very heart of today’s social problems, it’s a track which has real heart and potency.
“Family, love and legacy. Not this bullshit society tries to get you to put priority on like money or the new hot car or whatever they want you to be enamoured with, then turn around and make you feel like shit for not having it.
Growing up in Rochester and getting caught up in those streets up there, I thought that was what life was.
Fast forward a few years, I’m living in Vegas, became a father and I now see what life is and all it can be and just how beautiful it is. We are all in a place of appreciation for life and the things that truly matter.
VIVA! Long live us!”

Willie Weems - His Story

William Herman Weems was born in Brookhaven-Lincoln County, Mississippi, to young, single mother Evelyn Weems, on 2nd August 1941.Brookhaven was an old Railroad town with a population of just over 6,200. Evelyn was just seventeen and had found work in the service of a white, southern family some 800 miles away in Virginia; she was young and uneducated and so did what she had to do to survive. With mum away, Willie, who was an only child, was cared for by an older cousin during those formative years.
At the age of 2 ½ yrs., Willie was moved South to be with his grandparents Ezekiel and Leola Weems. In Picayune, a 100 mile drive south from Brookhaven and a 40 minute drive From New Orleans. Still at an early age Willies Mother, Evelyn Weems met and married Silas McGee, who was 20 years her senior. The family moved north and settled in Maywood, a small village in Cooks County, Illinois. Following Evelyn`s marriage, Willie found his name changed to McGee, Willie was never entirely happy with it.

Willie's first memories of music go back to the age of round six while he was in Mississippi for the summer, hanging around with the local kids playing games and discovering tadpoles in streams. The gang of local kids went to visit an old man, he chatted and joked with the kids. On his wall he had an old acoustic guitar. Being inquisitive Willie ask about what it was, the old guy took his hand and strummed the strings. Willie remembers just standing and staring at it, and trying to visualize the sound and the six strings and the shape of it. This was the beginning of Willie's love affair with the guitar..
At the age of 12, Willie was given a small wooden Roy Roger's guitar by a friend who seemed happy to get rid of it. It had two strings, the low E & A. Around this time Willie was listening to a blues artist named Jimmy Reed. His songs relied heavily on those two strings. Willie listened carefully and practiced hard..
Gradually, Willie acquired better guitars and eventually took lessons, having decided he would become a star, just like Chuck Berry. Practicing at home could be an issue , due to the volume. But Willie was determined, so played with his naked thumb to help keep the noise down.

It was at Proviso East High School, that Willie and two friends, Joe Moore who played drums, and Mac Woods who played Guitar, formed their first band. The Downbeats, They played regularly and widely around the local area. They were still learning and doing well when they hooked up with John O'Neal, a local Booking agent/ manager. Who booked gigs for them at Adult clubs. These venues were usually dusty back alley joints, they were great times and they usually got paid a few dollars for doing what they enjoyed, plus mixing with some of the days great blues artists, such as the likes of Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, and Ray Charles.
Over time a young blues singer Mack Carmichael joined them and they played the blues out of old tube fender amps, In the early days, the guys dealt with many of the great Black radio DJ's of the time, the likes of Lucky Cordell, E Rodney Jones, Pervis Spann, Herb Kent, and Al Benson. Benson was one of the first DJs Willie was aware of in his Community. He played the Blues and 1950`s R&B.
At 16 Willie graduated from high school; his name had changed back to William Herman Weems and he and his friends in the band had decided that they would join the Army and tour the world. By August 1957, all of the group members had signed-up. Willie recalls just how much younger than everyone he looked when they were sent for basic training.
The guys had been told that they would stay together, this turned out not to be the case. Mac went to Korea, Joe went to North Carolina, and Willie Germany. The two fields of training Willie best qualified for were Field Tactical Communication and Transportation. Choosing Transportation Willie was shipped to Germany as a Tractor Trailer Driver with the 594th Trans Company.
Once he`d settled into his unit and got to know the area and learning some German, he sent for his guitar. It transpired that Willie had a cousin in the town he was stationed. Albert Weems, owned a Bar and Restaurant. Now Aged 18 he began to play at his cousin’s bar. He also entered talent contests and recalls he would usually come second to white players. (Willie still laughs about this).

Due to the Cold War and other global crises such as the Bay of Pigs (March - April1961) Willie remained in Germany for an extended period. He returned to the US when he was finally discharged in 1962
Willie was now a professional Tractor Trailer Driver. Despite having driven across most of Western Europe, and covering in excess of 50,000 Miles without a single accident, the colour of his skin still remained a problem for the Teamsters Union back in the US.
Willie Passed the test to work as Bus driver, a Fireman and more but people still found a reason not to hire him. Undeterred Willie used his GI Bill to attend Triton College and North-Eastern University in Chicago, where he achieved credits for a BA in Human Resource Development and Behavioural Psychology.
In 1962, it was difficult to find a good job if you were black, Willie took the Civil Service Postal test, his score was good enough to be hired part time, and after about a year Willie made it to a full time position. Eventually making it to Federal Gov. Coordinator for the US Postal Service at Chicago's Bulk Mail Centre, Forest Park, Illinois.
Willie soon hooked up with musicians and singers who appreciated his guitar Style. He also played guitar for another group. The Downbeats aka Russ Vestee and the Downbeats, a group of white guys, who`s members included Larry Nestor on keyboard, Carmine Menna, Eddie Hoh on drums and Russell Vestuto (aka Russ Vestee) The Downbeats did  Buddy Holly covers, and other popular songs of the time, and proved especially popular at weddings and Italian parties etc.
Around this time Willie began to take a greater interest in song writing, visualising songs in his head before rushing home from work to write the lyrics, playing and matching chords on an old piano. He became quite proficient in getting his ideas down and the songs recorded

Willie met lots of musicians who were already recording, and hooked up with Leroy Dandridge, who at the time was in a group called Condors. They had formed around 1958, and consisted of Gwen Bradshaw, Art Mitcham, Harvey Mitcham, all hailing from the Central Park Ave area on the Westside of Chicago.
In 1963 they changed their name to the Dontells and entered the studio to cut their first track on vinyl. The groups first release, 'Make change / Lover's reunion' , was on New York's Beltone label (which was distributed by King Records, Cincinnati). Chicago's Larry Nestor wrote, arranged and helped produce those two tracks.
Willie and Leroy continued to write under the team guise 'Wee Dan'; Willie also became a full member of the Dontells. In mid 1963 Nathaniel (Nate) Pendleton joined the Dontells; Nate had previously been a member of the Del Ray and soon ventured into song writing with the Dontells next track 'people gonna talk/ “I found a love” (Witch w119). Willie Played rhythm guitar on this track, Emanuel Seals sang lead along with Gwen, Leroy and Art Mitcham. This was soon followed-up with 'Lonely Boy / The Old Man” on the same label (Witch 121).
The Don-Tels (aka Dontells) were contracted to four tracks on Witch, part of Cortland Recording Company, both of which were owned by Bill Ermans. Cortland, established in 1961, was located on the north side of Chicago at 1501 West Cortland, above Bill Erman`s Diamond coal company. Willie recalls recording while the guys below shovelled away at the coal heaps!

Willie married Mittie Pearl Weems Nee Parker in 1964 and managed to balance his full-time job, raising a family and recording; he was instrumental in getting the group local gigs to help promote themselves and their latest releases. The group's line-up changed twice and consisted of three mail workers: Willie, Nathaniel Pendleton and Emanuel Seals.
The group departed Cortland in 1965 and peddled their musical wares around Michigan Ave. in an attempt to get another release. They went first to USA Records and finally secured a contract with Vee-Jay; the label had just moved back to Chicago and, unbeknown to the group, was undergoing major changes in an attempt to address some financial difficulties.
Calvin Carter, Vivian Carter's brother, was Vee-Jay`s A&R man and principal producer; he rushed them into Universal Studios and cut the tracks that they had written, which Johnny Pate prepared the charts for. The first, 'In Your Heart / 'Nothing but nothing'' (Vee Jay 666) was written by Nathaniel Pendleton, Seals, Leroy Dandridge (Dan Se Pen), Willie played Guitar on 'in your heart' and wrote the flip. This also enjoyed releases in the UK (Fontana 566) in May of 1965 and June 1970 (President 373).

Both sides of the group's next release “Is you Is or is you ain't my baby' / 'I'm gonna tell the world' (VJ 967) were again written by Willie Weems whilst hanging out at Leroy 'Sam' Dandridge`s apartment; Willie also passed some of the credits to the rest of the team. It was produced by Calvin Carter and Johnny Pate; this was also recorded at Universal Studios. This was the groups biggest session and was arranged by Riley Hampton. The guys thought they were going places and were ready to hit the big time .
While with Vee-Jay, the opportunity arose to promote their songs alongside other Chicago artists when a visit to Detroit was planned for 'The Jerry Butler Review' alongside The Dells and Tyrone Davis. One of Jerry Butlers backing singers, was a young 20-year-old by the name of Tammi Montgomery. That visit to Detroit with ‘The Jerry Butler Review’ led Berry Gordy to sign her to Motown; she also changed her surname to Terrell.
The Review was hosted by the man himself, Berry Gordy, and took place at Detroit's famous 20 Grand. Willie recalls how great it felt to rub shoulders with the likes of the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Miracles etc. He also recalls that Jerry Butler did a great show while the The Dells positively brought the house down! For their part, The Dontells used the opportunity to promote their new release; they also played their others on the label.
From Detroit, they journeyed to St. Louis to perform on the show of the great Albert King, preceding him on stage. By this time, The Dontells were building a good following and their stage act was nearing perfection.
By early 1966, most of the artists had begun to leave Vee Jay - including future soul star Joe Simon - and the label was down to a nucleus of about a half-dozen acts. In January, the company filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the bankruptcy laws. By May, it was all over; Vee Jay closed its Chicago offices and released all of its employees, leaving The Dontells without a label.
Like so many artists at that time, The Dontells were just happy to record and perform; they didn’t research the company and were unaware of what was happening with their songs; they assumed that there was nothing they could do to protect the music. Jimmy and Vivian Carter sold the Vee-Jay catalogue, including released and unreleased songs written by Willie and Sam, to a Japanese business man.
After Vee-Jay`s demise, feeling let down by the label, Willie and Sam set-up their own labels and became independent label owners/producers. The labels were Dan-dy, Ambassador and Donte, and the production company was called 'Wee Dan'. David Green , the bass player at that time, lived at the address on the label: 744 South Central Park. Their discs were pressed and distributed by William Barney's Four Brothers.

4 Brothers

West Side businessman Willie James Barney originally hailed from Parkdale in Arkansas. A long-time resident of the Lawndale neighbourhood in Chicago; he died at Mount Sinai Hospital on Feb. 20th 2016, aged 89, following a cardiac arrest at his Chicago home.
Born on 10th October 1927, like so many African-American southerners he relocated to Chicago in the early 1950s. With vision and an entrepreneurial spirit, he began selling R&B records from his car; eventually growing Barney’s Swing Shop into Barney’s One Stop Records.
By the mid-1960s Barney, along with partners Jack Daniels (A&R / Production), and Granville 'Maurice' White (Columbia Records Promotions man) created Four Brothers Records and its sister label Bright Star. Soon, they were producing records on the likes of Tyrone Wonder Boy Davis, G.L Crockett and Sam + Kitty.
Jack Daniels was the principal operator and handled administration, A&R, production and promotion aspects; he also owned Ja-Dan records which existed from 1965 through to 1967.
This was as busy time for Willie as he was playing a lot of live gigs with various local bands. Willie and Sam were friends and they spent time socialising: playing cards, drinking or just family time enjoying Sam`s wife's good cooking. Willie would have an idea and start pursuing it while they sat around, sharing ideas and music.
Their next release came from one such get together, released on the Donte label (based at 4509 W Jackson) was “Moaning and Crying” / “Soul Nitty Gritty” (Donte 100). 'Soul Nitty Gritty' is a really raw R&B dancer with Nate on lead. Written by Dandridge and Weems, the rest of the group dealt with the production side of things.
The follow up track, “I Cant Wait” was promoted on the Ambassador label, this time there was a temporary change to the line-up, with Sam being the only original member on this recording, with the addition of Nate on First tenor, Larry Nestor and with Willie on Guitar. “I can’t wait” which was originally written by Jerry Ragovoy (as Norman Meade) and Chip Taylor, and recorded by Baby Washington. The Guys did a complete different take on it changing it to a male vocal style love song.
Willie worked intensely with Larry Houston in the early days, and became a close friend. The two recorded together alongside John Davis, who shared the writing and arrangements with Leroy Dandridge. Willie has fond memories of playing on Houston`s 'I know we can make it' which got a double release on Ambassador 1032, flipped with “I Need Love” and “This World”. Willie played on most of Larry`s early Tracks.

Larry Houston – I'll Take the Blues/ It's no Secret – Donte 112

Willie Weems & The Outlaws ‎– Greens / Snuff Time – Bran Dee‎ 108

Willie Weems & The Palmadores ‎– Greens / Snuff - Dan-Dy ‎– D-101

Willie`s next venture was the first release on their Dan-Dy label which was another Wee Dan Production, this time featuring Singing Sam's 'Ooh baby / 'Move it baby'. (Miss Kitty Grove's contribution to the latter heralded the beginning of a working relationship with Willie which would become world renown in the context of the rare soul scene).
Willie`s self-penned track “Greens” with a group called Palmadores, again on the Dan-Dy label (Dan-Dy 101); was recorded at the Leaner brothers', One-Derful Studio on Michigan Ave., the  band laid this track down, while Nate Pendleton shared his experience with snuff to the producers, they laughed so hard they asked him to add his story as the vocals ...It was Willies idea to name and write it. Snuff was inspired by Junior Walker and the All-stars. The Track got a second release on the Bran–Dee label (Bran-Dee 108), this release was “Greens/Snuff Time" a slight change on the title, also a change of backing group name to Willie Weems & the Outlaws, again credited to Willie Weems, Leroy Dandridge and John Davis. For whatever reason, the musicians were the same, but Willie came up with the name Outlaws. Which was a name used for live gigs. Matthew Angrum, played rhythm guitar, Kenny Thompkins drums, John Davis on horns, John Davis also arranged “Snuff”.

Sam and Kitty
Then there was Sam and Kitty,
Kitty (Katherine) Grove (nee Kitty Stewart), was an ex-lover of Willie`s, whom he had met in social circles, Kitty had become a creative inspiration to Willie, giving Willie the heart felt inspiration to write songs about how he felt about Kitty. Kitty now divorced lives in Decater, on the outskirts of Atlanta, Ga. She now sings gospel at her local church.
Willie wrote songs for Kitty and shared them with Sam because he sang on them, and they were partners. Sam, Singing Sam and Leroy Dandridge are the very same person, 'Sam' being Leroy`s nick name

Sam & Kitty - Your Money, My Love/ Don’t Hit On Me – 4 Brothers 400
Willies first release for 4 Brothers was a track that he wrote for Kitty called 'Your money – My Love' and it emerged from an idea and discussion between he and Sam while sipping Old Grandad 100%proof whisky. Willie recalls that the song came together because the love part just came naturally and once things were in motion.
Sam put more into the flip 'Don’t hit on me' and Willie gave his all on guitar too. He played two parts - also known as overdubbing - and says: “If you listen to it, you hear counterpoint in the musical guitars”. Willie added Johnny Moore and Daniels to the credits on this side too.
The next release was also on 4 Brothers; that too came about following a social evening playing cards and knocking ideas around. Written by Weems and Dandridge and produced by Jack Daniels, Edith Browns 'You did it' / 'You think love is something to play with' . 'You did it' is real, raw Chicago soul. It bursts immediately into life with Willie's guitar followed by Edith Brown`s raw vocals, both of which grow and flow as the simple but effective track builds. Edith Brown was the niece of Jack Daniels.

Edith Brown - You Did it / You Think love is Something To Play With - 4 Brothers 403
'You think love' is in fact the original A-side; a smooth, moody track with Willie on guitar and the Dontells doing a great job on backing vocals. The session was promoted and produced by Jack Daniels and Willie Barney. Willie and Sam encouraged Barney to finance the production as he had connections in so far as pressing and distributing records were concerned. In return, he would receive a high percentage on any sales.
During this period, for the most part Willie and the guys hung out at Sam Dandridge’s house, just kicking back. One time the group were over there when Willie just hit them with a song which would go on to become a soul anthem throughout the UK: Sam and Kitty's 'I've got something good' / 'Love is the greatest' was released in 1966 (Four Brothers 452).
Both sides, but especially 'I've got something good', were inspired by Willie's feelings for Kitty. Recorded at United studios and distributed via Atco, it enjoyed promotion via the late E. Rodney Jones`s radio show on WVON and rose to number fifteen on Chicago R&B Chart. (Jones, aka 'The Mad Lad', may have been the most prolifically-recorded of all the great R&B Djs, releasing a number of tracks himself, most of which are well known to rare soul fans in the UK).
Collectors will be only too aware of course that many variants of the IGSG original press have emerged over the years, demo and issue copies; not all of which were legit. That said, three original USA variants exist in both issue and demo formats:.
- east coast vinyl, Atco distributed with Four Brothers written across on one line
- east Coast vinyl, Atco distributed with Four Brothers written on two lines;
- west coast styrene with Monarch triangle/delta matrix and two lines across the label.

Sam and Kitty “I`ve Got Something Good” / “Love Is The Greatest” - Four Brothers 452
Following the Sam and Kitty releases, the group did engage in payola in an attempt to 'encourage' certain DJs to push the records although this rarely worked out as they had hoped as that initial push usually proved short lived.
Willie was getting known in Chicago music circles, both for his writing and production skills. While at Four Brothers he struck up a friendship with Johnny Moore, a Chicago writer/artist of some renown of course who is especially well known in the UK for his Date release 'walk like a man'.

Junior Wells - Girl You Lit My Fire – It`s a man down there – Blue Rock 4062
Willie regards Moore as having been a musical genius with a great voice and he feels that working with him helped to develop his own song writing skills quite significantly. Moore used one of Willie's compositions on Junior Wells and it got a release on Blue Rock records (do you know what and when?) - Moore told him that he was having a 'dry' spell and his contract demanded a quota of records each month. Willie got writing credits but was never paid for his material and still feels robbed on some levels...

The Turks - In other words ...
Willie continued to write and arrange then. In particular, he was hoping to get noticed by James Shelton Jr of Daran / DJO label. Shelton Jnr was the one-time Manager for the Hi-Lites aka Chi-Lites; he also owned the Shelton real-estate Co. on South King Drive in Chicago.
Following a chance meeting with his old friend Ted Long resulted in Willie hooking-up with Tom Williams. Ted and Tom had both been members of a local group, The Fascinators, who had broken up. The Fascinators had enjoyed a release on Bombay Records, 'In other words' / 'Gonna miss me' (B4502)) which had been produced by Bob Catron, A&R director of Witch/Cortland.
Willie put together a group of guys including Ted Long and Tom Williams whom he called The Turks / Fabulous Turks and managed to get them signed to DJO. On a limited budget, The Turks did eventually get into the studio where they cut four tracks, all of which were written by Willie. Willie was promised a full orchestra and he felt that the musical arrangements were good; the rehearsals were great. Unfortunately, a few days before the actual recording date Shelton Jnr. dispensed with over half of the orchestra. Willie was extremely disappointed to say the least although the session did still get finished somehow, with Willie on guitar.
The Turks discs 'You turn me on” / 'Generation gap' (DJO 0111) and 'The bad brought the good' / 'let it flame' (DJO 0113) are familiar to UK soul fans of course; both were written and arranged by Willie Weems and produced by James Shelton Jnr and became popular locally. However, it transpired that Shelton Jr was in fact using DJO/ Daran for 'tax purposes' and the tracks really didn't enjoy the promotion they deserved. A quick listen to the soaring harmonies on 'you turn me on' will confirm that there's no justice!

The Turks 'You turn me on”  (DJO 0111) and 'The bad brought the good' (DJO 0113)
Ultimately, as The Turks lacked the know-how or finances to promote their records themselves they never realised their full potential or enjoyed the success their talents deserved. In Willie's own words: "we were basically a tax write off”. On the plus side, however, The Turks did enjoy larger shows as a result of their single. For example, they played the first Black Expo in Chicago in 1969 which was held at The International Amphitheatre on 42nd and Halsted. Many black businesses promoted their services and black entertainers performed each evening.
In the early 70s, a new version of the group formed, calling themselves the Four Shades. The group originally worked with Johnny Moore, cutting a demo for Blue Rock and backing Johnny (on 'Just my way of loving you') and Junior Wells on the label.
Willie and Mac Woods were Long time school friends, they tried to capitalize on Willies musical reputation and talents.  They made an attempt to create a group, The Table of Content, Maurice Smith, Bonnie Lush, Tom Jones (2nd tenor) and Floyd Brown, who was last to join and had a great vocal range. Willie worked with and coached the group, and did many live shows with  them. The Table of Contents were very good, but due to circumstances, it was not to be, It was a learning experience for all concerned.  Soon after Willie and the group parted ways,  Mac Woods went on to use Willie`s ideas, and under the leadership of Mac Woods, Table of Content went on to release a track “ Wrapped around your finger”
The track was written by Mac, who had started with Willie in the High School band The Deadbeats, (Willies states that “Mac Woods will " steal " what he thinks will benefit his causes. Just facts.)

Table of Content - Wrapped Around Your Finger / Michelle Your My Baby - LAKE

Finally all the guys, Dontells, Turks gradually drifted apart due to Family pressures and just bad luck with the music business, The Dontells and Willie lost track of their songs. Two members of the Dontells passed away, Leroy Dandridge(Sam), and Emmanuel Seals, since then many more have gone to pastures green, May they RIP.
It was years later that they heard that their music was still being enjoyed by a different generation and music culture in the UK..
Willie is working on a few tracks that he would like to present to Durand Jones and the Indications, after speaking to the group after a concert that he attended..

Willie

Detroit A Go Go Live Stream Fri 23rd Oct 2020

DETROIT A-GO-GO  PRIVATE LIVE STREAM VIA FACEBOOK LIVE FRIDAY OCTOBER 23RD 2020.
STARRING THE CONTOURS, PAT LEWIS, CAROLYN CRAWFORD, SPYDER TURNER, JNR WALKERS ALL STAR BAND
10PM - 11PM BST.
During these very difficult impossible times the Soul Scene has very much been put on hold all major venues, weekenders, Allnighters, Soul nights are all suspended until further notice, one major event sadly cancelled is Detroit A-GO-GO which was scheduled to happen in Leeds in October, now fingers crossed it has been re scheduled for next July at the Cleethorpes weekender, everyone has been affected by this pandemic in terms of being able to function as ENTERTAINERS, DJ's and PROMOTERS of Soul events, the artists who gave us this music in the first place those who survive are unable to perform in America resulting in little or no income, pretty much the same for many people right now, recently Carolyn Crawford and Pat Lewis have done LIVE PERFORMANCES VIA FACEBOOK LIVE where people could make a donation if they so wished to basically help these wonderful people out so much so Phil & Kim Dick, Neil Rushton have put together another Live Stream direct from  a venue in Detroit set to happen on Friday October 23rd this will be a PAY FOR VIEW EVENT @ $15.00 Approx £12.60 based on two people viewing the show, this is no hard sell or must do but it's a small price to pay for what is a unique Soul Scene first, this event will be a professional live feed, performed in a NON audience venue in Detroit, PA engineers, filming crew, artists etc. are pretty much doing this for a very small amount of money but it does have costs to be able to do this, there is a break even figure to make this happen so we all know the SOUL SCENE can pull together on this to make it happen and I for one know we need a little joy right now in this shit storm we are all in.
Mark Bicknell on behalf of Phil & Kim Dick, Neil Rushton, THE CONTOURS, PAT LEWIS, CAROLYN CRAWFORD, SPYDER TURNER, JNR WALKERS ALL STAR BAND AND EVERYONE CONNECTED WITH DETROIT A-GO-GO LIVE.

The tracks chosen weave their way across the r&b boards of the earlier output, heading into the funkier sounds of the 70’s, before highlighting the polished modern soul and disco era into the 80’s. We’re proud of the tracklisting we’ve managed to assemble and think it’s not just a great introduction for those that are currently unaware of the discography, but it’s a solid representation to those that are already connoisseurs.

I thank all my djs who have djed for me . the amazing coop staff over the years the security staff my wife Kim and  importantly everyone who came to any of my events especially the dancers of which no venue can do without .many have moved on and some sadly have passed away... Kenny Carter - Showdown - The Complete 1966 RCA recordings Review

The summer of 1996 was a great time for lovers of Northern/Rare Soul for it was the time when Ady Croasdell unleashed the unreleased RCA masters on the basement dancefloor of the famed 100 Club, the home of the countries longest running Northern/Rare Soul all-nighter club, now in its 42nd year.
Amongst these tracks was Kenny Carter’s original take of “What’s That On Your Finger”.  Already known for the RCA 45 by Willie Kendrick.  Kenny’s take a totally different arrangement, smoother more soulful with Kenny pleading for the hand of his ex because he’s been lonely without her only to see another’s ring on her finger.  It’s a familiar tale of woe throughout his recordings.  The song however set the dancefloor alight along with all the other tracks from the vaults of RCA and the haul has intrigued and delighted lovers of Northern Soul ever since and still has people talking of that night down those illustrious steps.

Kenny Carter, born in 1940 in ironically Kent, Ohio, had just two releases that did very little before he was plucked from obscurity to record for RCA in Bell Sound’s Studio A on what was described by Ady as a million-dollar LP.  The backing singers were all A list, amongst them Ashford and Simpson and an array of top singers who had backed the very best.  The musicians, as good as any you would find in New York, concert violinists, at least 7 or 8 Strads says Garry Sherman who was the arranger for the sessions of Kenny’s.
The sessions yielded 6 sides released by RCA, “Don’t Go/How Can You Say Goodbye”, “Showdown/I’ve Got To Get Myself Together” & “Body & Soul/I’ve Got To Find Her”. As well as these 6 at over half a dozen sessions, a further 16 tracks were laid down.  Tracks written by New York Soul Music royalty plus some additional jazz and show standard that are not out of place and are delivered with so much soul you wouldn’t realise they were in some cases 30 years old even at the time of Kenny laying down his take on them.
Unfortunately for music lovers the LP was never released and consigned to the vaults of the RCA building in New York.

If a singer laid down his life in song then Kenny Carter had a pretty miserable time of it, a tale of heartbreak, misery, and downright rotten luck with the ladies.  Indeed, as one reporter described him in one review, the Guardian’s Ben Beaumont-Thomas after discovering Kenny on Dave Godin’s Deep Soul Treasures. “Biographical info is scant – he was signed to RCA but walked out on the deal and into obscurity, apparently – but you can reasonably surmise that his love life was, to be frank, an absolute shitshow. There is no kind of breakup that Carter seemingly hasn’t gone through or weathered with anything but extremely poor judgment”.
For most of the tracks he is the one who is dumped.  For many he cannot accept this, the immortal “Don’t Go” the first release from the sessions he pleads with her to stay and that he has to try to convince her to stay, the other guy just wants to use her. “Every Time We Say Goodbye” he is hurting and dies a little inside every time they say goodbye.  “I’ve Got To Find Her” again he has to let her know how much he needs her and how much it hurts that someone else is holding her. “What’s That On Your Finger” sees Kenny holding out hope for his ex until he see another man’s ring on her finger, a wedding ring! “I’m Not The One” he actually does the leaving for once when he realises she loves another more than him and he has lets her go. “Showdown” a tale of Kenny and his best friend who both love the same girl, one of them is going to get hurt.  It gets to the point where on “I’ve Got To get Myself Together” the girls backing him call him silly boy and tell him to get himself together, life must go on, he himself knows this but he cannot accept this. “I Can’t Stop Laughing” we hear Kenny say if he does he will simply break down crying.

It is a familiar tale throughout the 22 tracks with Kenny’s superb voice delivering each with such soul and as such you could actually believe it had all happened to him. So much soul, heartbreak, heartfelt pleading for lost love. The lush arrangements of Garry Sharman just carry you along and leave you emotionally drained at the end, but it is so good you have to play them all again.
The 22 tracks are what soul music is all about, it tears your heart apart and leaves you an emotional wreck.  You live the music as though it was your own life and for many of us, we can relate to some of the goings on in the songs.
How these could be left to dwell in the vaults for so long is a mystery. Kenny himself walked away from the contract not too long after laying the tracks down, he recorded just a couple more 45s before leaving the music business altogether in the early 70s.  He died in November 1990 without seeing the pleasure his recordings would ultimately bring to lovers of soul music some 30 years after recording them thanks to the intrepid Ady Croasdell at Kent records who gained access to the vaults of RCA in 1994.  Of the 22 tracks 6 saw a release, 6 would get an airing at the 100 Club once Ady had access to the vaults in the summer of 1996.  This release sees a further dozen getting a release for the very first time.

It has been a 20-year journey for Ady to get this CD released and I’m sure many of you will agree it was worth the wait and for me it is the release of the year.  That isn’t easy to say given the quality of some of the release that have come from Ace/Kent alone. It is a must buy and it would be nice if we could see a double album release of this on vinyl as it was meant to be.
As usual you get a superb booklet written by Ady Croasdell telling the whole tale of the sessions, the musicians and recording team and what little is known of Kenny.  Sit down with a glass of your favourite, read whilst you listen to such a fantastic body of soul music.
