Mello Souls - Fisher Harmon R.I.P.

Mello Souls - Fisher Harmon R.I.P.
I'm sad to let you know that Fisher P. Harmon died, aged 70, last month
Fisher alongside Silas Phifer, Jim T & Randy provided us with one of the most loved and iconic 45s of all time.
He was a great guy and was both humbled, amazed and very happy to learn that 'We Can Make It' had finally hit home. This was the side that featured his lead vocal
When Rupert & I visited him, in September 2016, he was full of great stories about his life and times and the journey that the Mello Souls took that resulted in their one, and only, recording session on September 24th 1967
We were thrilled that we reunited him that week with the 'teenagers' who provided the music.
The pictures show Fisher, at home, with his 45 .... touching base with Larry, who was one of those 'teenagers, and meeting, for the first time in decades, the children of Mr Marshall, the group's manager
R.I.P. Fisher
Another job well done
Andy

Soul Source is Hiring... Job Opening

Soul Source is Hiring...
Well we are looking at a few changes this spring
Over time the way the site gets used changes and evolves and so there will always be a need to reflect these changes in how the site works/delivers/operates.
One aspect that we are looking at improving is how the various main sections of the site (the news feature, the forums, the sales features and the event guide) are run.
The thinking is to bring in a new way of looking after each of these main Soul Source features by 'hiring'  people who can look after and manage each feature on a regular basis, and also play a main part in taking these features further upwards and onwards  in the future

Are After
At first we are looking for 2 people,  who be up for looking after and managing one of the two main features below...
1. 'Forums' - One person to look after, promote and encourage/moderate the main Soul Source Forums, basically all the forums apart from the sales related ones
2 'Sales Feature' -  One person to look after, promote and manage/moderate  the Soul Source Sales features which include the sales forums, classifieds, feedback feature etc
Requirements...
1. Passionate about soul music - has to be a given
2.  A way with the words and the tech - eg good communication and decent IT skills
3. Spare Time/Active - be ready willing and available
4. Interested and enthusiastic about the relevant section/feature - eg Interested in soul trading if sales or if forums enjoy talking about soul etc etc
It will be a semi-pro set up which at first which will mean extremely part time. Hours paid will be limited at first, and will be more spare cash than a salary. However as things move on over time, hours available should improve all things going well.
Drop us a pm @mike @mike for further info/details/talk via or via the contact link at the bottom of the page  - just let us know which of the two position you are interested in and we can then both take things from there
cheers

Lamont Dozier UK Tour Details and Video

More formal news announcement along with a video regarding the upcoming UK tour by Lamont Dozier

MOTOWN LEGEND LAMONT DOZIER ANNOUNCES DEBUT UK TOUR FEATURING HIS CLASSIC SONGS 'RE-IMAGINED'
Legendary Songwriter-Producer-Artist and one third of Holland/Dozier/Holland announces his debut UK tour.
Lamont Dozier has written over fifty #1 hits for artists such as Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & the Supremes, The Four Tops and more as part of the songwriting team Holland/Dozier/Holland.
On this tour Lamont and his band, featuring acclaimed musician/producer/arranger Fred Mollin, will be performing his classic hits in support of a new album, scheduled for 2018 release, which 're-imagines' these iconic songs in a more intimate, 'unplugged' format. Lamont will also, no doubt, share many of the stories behind the songs.
Detroit-born Lamont Dozier was signed to Berry Gordy's Motown Records in 1962. After hooking up with Eddie & Brian Holland, the trio wrote a breath-taking number of hits such as 'Baby Love', 'It's the Same Old Song', 'This Old Heart of Mine', 'Where Did Our Love Go', 'You Can't Hurry Love', 'Reach Out I'll be There', 'Jimmy Mack', 'Stop! In the Name of Love', 'Bernadette', '(Love is Like a) Heatwave', 'Baby I Need Your Loving' and many, many more.
The Invictus & Hot Wax record labels were set up in 1968 by Holland/Dozier/Holland and more hits followed such as 'Band of Gold' by Freda Payne, 'Give Me Just a Little More Time' by Chairmen of the Board and more. In 1972 the Lamont Dozier solo career commenced with 'Why Can't We Be Lovers' followed by more success with 'Fish Ain't Bitin' and 'Going Back To My Roots'. Lamont Dozier has also collaborated with Simply Red, Kanye West, Alison Moyet, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Mark Ronson, Solange Knowles, Joss Stone amongst many others, during his long and illustrious career.
Special guest support comes from award-winning singer/songstress Jo Harman, herself a BBC Radio 2 play-listed artist, whose critically acclaimed and commercially successful recent album, 'People We Become', recorded in Nashville, includes a cameo from soul superstar Michael McDonald.

Promotional video - Wigan Casino 45th Anniversary Celebration

Hi everybody,
We have just released the promotional video for this years Empire Soul All-Nighter. If you don't already know about this all-nighter, the previous two events have been near sell-outs with near 800 people in attendance at both. This year is looking to be a sell out at the 1000 capacity!
We will be celebrating Wigan Casino's 45th anniversary with original Casino DJs : John Vincent, Pep & Ian Wills plus some of the UKs and Europes most in-demand current all-nighter DJs (Not including myself ) : Mick H, Barry Maleedy, Tony Clarke, Daz Dakin and yours truly.
Our vision with this event is to celebrate the Casino's legacy the right way with traditional all-nighter values and not only playing the popular Casino classics, but to also play some great forgotten Casino spins. We have asked each DJ will play at least three records that they believe are totally forgotten.

Kool & Together - The Fabulous Dynamics - Big Crown records

KOOL & TOGETHER
"SITTIN ON A RED HOT STOVE" b/w  "NASSAU BEAT"
AVAILABLE IN THE BCR WEBSTORE NOW

Big Crown is proud to present this reissue 7 inch from Texas’s own Kool & Together.
The A side, “Sittin’ On a Red Hot Stove” is an infectious, medium-paced funk movement that chugs along with the help of some sharp drums from Joe and a rolling bass line that never quits. Originally edited by Texas record mogul Huey Meaux, the 45 version clocks in at just under two and a half minutes, and gave the band its strongest single. It’s an anecdotal tale of a woman who is lusted after but so mean-spirited, she could melt the romance away.
Side B is an unreleased demo version from Kool & Together working up the monster “Funky Nassau”. Clearly something they never finished, the raw recording and lo fidelity of it is what give what they call “Nassau Beat” it’s charm.

THE FABULOUS DYNAMICS
"GET HIP TO YOURSELF" b/w "EVERYTIME I SEE A PRETTY GIRL"
AVAILABLE FOR PREORDER IN THE BCR WEBSTORE NOW
Big Crown Records is proud to present a recording that could have easily been lost forever like so many others from it’s era. Taken from the only known copy of this acetate that appears to be a rehearsal recording for the group to solicit local gigs, these stripped down versions of “Get Hip To Yourself” and “Every Time I See a Pretty Girl” are American relics.
The only information about the acetate is handwritten on a piece of masking tape affixed to the A side, the name of the group, The Fabulous Dynamics, and the track listing. Of the 6 songs on the demo, we pulled the 2 most buttery, delectable, sweet & savory slices of mid 60’s group soul.
Stripped down to vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar, both sides of this 7 capture the lo-fi, intimate sonic landscape of yesteryear, something that is often emulated, but never quite duplicated. Another pretty cool detail about this acetate, it was found in the personal record collection of Lamont Dozier.

We pressed up an limited edition (250 piece) run of handstamped labels that are exclusive to the BCR Webstore. For our collector friends, get them while they last....

Win Win - Bettye Swann - The Money Masters Album

Time for a new Soul Source members competition
Up for grabs is a fine viny lp from Kent records that was released just prior to xmas, not only recent but also still sealed!
The Money Masters - Bettye Swann  KENT 508
A vinyl album featuring 14 of her finest sides for Money Records of Los Angeles.

An earlier album had been scheduled after her first hit but was shelved when the follow-ups failed. That album would have contained ‘The Dance Is Over’ and a faster version of her later single ‘I Think I’m Falling In Love’, both included here....
To Enter/Win
All you have to do this time to be in with a shout of this fine album landing on your doormat, is simply 'up vote'  this article (new members look down and right - see the green arrow? hit that and your name should register as a up voter)

Introducing Kimberlite Records

Hi all,

My friends and I have started a new label called Kimberlite Records in Edmonton Canada and we’re about to release our first record featuring a local group called The Estimations.  The Estimations are heavily influenced by the “big city” soul sound and their first release features an up-tempo side with latin percussion b/w a Sam Cooke influenced ballad.

This has been a really rewarding project for all involved and we’re currently going into production on our next record which will have a funky crossover feel b/w a sweet soul track.

If you’re curious please check us out at www.kimberliterecords.com, Kimberlite Records on Facebook, or @kimberliterecords on Instagram.

Cheers,
Jeff

The Anti-Valentine 2018 List - Nominations Needed

Haven't done this for a year or two, maybe longer, so could be enjoyable.
How about nominating your most apt soul choice for the 2018 anti-valentine song list
As previously any songs that do have the anti-valentine vibe are most welcome, though I'd say 'soul' and 'anti-valentine' and 'humour' being the main keywords
Last time we did it this was one of the main contenders...
high bar, so whats on the members 2018 anti-valentines list?
over to you...

Sink Soul Club to close

We have been told that the Magnet Bar in Liverpool which is the home of the Sink Soul Club has been sold and will cease to be a music venue after Sunday 18th February.
The last ever event at the Sink club will be on Sunday 18th February, we would like to thank everyone who has attended the Sink over the years and have made it one of the best Sunday afternoon venues in the North West.
Another historic club gone, the Magnet was due to celebrate its 60th anniversary this year so this closure is a double blow.
We will be carrying on with the spirit of the Sink when we find a suitable venue--we have received a number of offers and will let everyone know when details are finalised.
Thanks.

The Goldwax Years - Spencer Wiggins - Lp - Kent Vinyl

Up in the spotlight, the latest vinyl release from Kent. An album delivering on vinyl 14 of this legendary artist's Goldwax soul recordings.
Spencer WIGGINS - The Goldwax Years -  KENT 511
Although Spencer Wiggins first made the R&B charts with his Fame 45 ‘Double Lovin’’ in 1970, it is his eight Goldwax singles, released in the latter half of the 60s, for which he is most famous among soul fans. Movements Vol 9 - Various Artists -Tramp Records

Available now on double-gatefold LP+7", CD and digital download
SALES NOTES:
**INITIAL 400 LPs CONTAIN A BONUS 7" BY MEL-O-MADNEZZ**
IT'S TIME TO PAAAARTY! Why? The Universe knows that Tramp is celebrating their 40th trip around the sun in 2018. And what about planet Earth? Well… it is as blind as it is in so many other situations. Therefore, it is time to shine the light on Tramp for all of its unremitting efforts. As musical diversity is vanishing, especially in the field of African American music from the 1960s/70s, it is our duty to stop the extinction of threatened species of music in the same way an animal welfare activist would do anything to save a gorilla's life. Tramp Records keeps this beautiful heritage alive, every single day, again and again and again. So we are here wondering why Earth people and especially to those from our beloved home country; why? why are you just sitting there, going about your life unaware of this historic event? What a pity!
The announcement is especially striking when it comes to the prestigious "Movements" series. Like all its predecessors, this ninth volume contains Rare Groove nuggets recorded between the early 1960s and the late 1970s. The fact that only one of the songs appear anywhere else is a jaw-dropping phenomenon! The chronological track listing starts with an amazing cover version: "Fever" by Gee Gee Shinn & the Boogie Kings. Bus Brown, Earl Demus and Chuck Finney remain in the same direction although their contributions are slightly jazzier. Chick Willis' gut-wrenching "Sometime Soon" easily rivals James Brown's "It's A Man's World" and the recordings by Australia and J.R. are beautiful examples of privately produced soul from the 1970s. The latin-soul of "Cho Cho San" by Hummingbird 4 heads the sound in another direction for the next three tunes, highlighted by one more stunning cover version, Oscar Brown Jr.'s "Brother, Where Are You?". The album closes with some pre-disco tracks from the mid-to-late 1970s. Funk 7" collectors will freak out to finally get a chance to listen to Mel-O-Madnezz' superheavy "What You Getting High On" but will certainly also enjoy The Counts, Reunion and HC's dance floor bomb cover of "Harlem Shuffle".
 <a data-cke-saved-href="http://tramprecords.bandcamp.com/album/movements-vol-9" href="http://tramprecords.bandcamp.com/album/movements-vol-9">Movements Vol . 9 by Various Artists</a>
Over a hundred great unknown songs have been re-released on the first eight volumes in the "Movements" series, the majority of which can not be found elsewhere, and Vol. 9 is no exception. The work of Germany's tiniest but grooviest record label is still incomprehensibly underestimated. We know you diggers, collectors, mavens, aficionados, fanatics, completists, enthusiasts, and just plain record geeks know what's up and we heartily salute you! Without your support there would be no Tramp Records. But now it's time for a broader cultural shift for good music and a sweeping move to uphold the legacy of the unsung heroes of funk and soul. Therefore, we humbly petition you: in 2018, Don't keep all this glory to yourself! Turn your friends and neighbors on! Thank you!
Key selling points:
- initial 400 LPs contain a bonus 7" by Mel-O-Madnezz ("What You Getting High On")
- the double vinyl LP comes with a full album download code
- deluxe double-gatefold LP with detailed liner notes, label scans & unseen photographs
- all but one song appear on vinyl-LP for the very first-time
