Southern Soul Movement-Review and Plays - Shirley
SOUTHERN SOUL MOVEMENT - COSHAM – PORTSMOUTH
FRIDAY 23/01/04
We were travelling a little further a field for tonight’s soulful treat. So a day off work to enable an early start seemed the best course of action for Col & myself, although Eddie (who was doing all the driving!!!!!!) worked ‘til lunchtime and we later learnt that Steve C, our host, had actually started work at 4.00am that morning to ensure an early finish!!!!! Still at least Col & I had managed a lie in on Friday ;-)))))
The journey from Yorkshire to “down sarf” was relatively straightforward considering the unpredictability of Friday “rush hour” traffic and we arrived at our destination just over 4 hours later this was due in the main to Eddies driving and my navigation skills oh and of course Steve’s excellent directions. – Note to editor – Yes Howard can you believe it, we did a 250 mile journey in the time it usually takes us to get to t’other side of Pennines and we didn’t pass the Trafford Centre once ;-)))))
After greetings, intros to Jason & Liz, a good old chinwag there was a grand tour Carol & Steve’s recently moved into mansionette (very nice too). We were then fed & watered (also very nice) before freshening up for the soulful antics ahead at The Racecourse Snooker Club
All the signs were good as on arrival at the club we had to go up a flight of stairs – steps (either up or down) are always a good sign, just something about having to climb stairs and hearing soul music get louder as you finally reach the room that always ensures a good night, the two, stairs and music just seem to go hand in hand - We entered a reasonably sized room, the bar at the entrance and a small stage at the far end of the room with (number one criteria as far I’m concerned) a good sized, level, smooth dance floor, oh and plenty of comfy seating for those soulies who prefer to talk about the music as opposed to dance to the music!!??!!
We’d arrived at the club all fired up and ready to hear some quality Northern Soul and quality Northern Soul is just what we got all evening. Steve C & Dave Abbott starting the proceedings followed by Col then Eddie, Steve, Dave then Col & Eddie again, the night finished with all the DJ’s behind the decks having a great time pulling out again and again some spanking toons!!!!! I danced just about all night the exception being the first half hour or so as I had arranged to meet my brother (a non-soulie) at the club, he’s an ex-marine!! who has settled in Portsmouth and whom I hadn’t seen for over three years, so as I was down his neck of the woods I couldn’t miss the opportunity to catch up on family gossip, but at the same time we had travelled a long way and I didn’t want to miss any more of the soul music than I had to so I thought it best for him to come to the soul night as opposed to me meeting at some bar in Portsmouth (full of sailors aren’t they?) I could tell the sights and sounds bemused him so I tried explaining our passion for the scene and despite giving him a copy of “Soul Up North” (yes Ed I said give – I couldn’t charge my own brother now could I?) I was unable to convert him to the faith, well you can either feel the music or you can’t, at least one member of my clan has got soul ;-)))))
There’s a short playlist at the end but I’ve got to say that a couple of the records played are amongst my current favourites of the moment – “Rags to riches to rags” by Donald Height and “I won’t have any babies for you” by The Bittersweet. We all finally left the club in the wee small hours of the morning and headed back to Chez Steve’n’Carol’s where the night continued for those with more stamina but less brain than those who elected to go to bed. This gave Steve the chance to challenge Col & Jason to a round robin game of table football, Steve then temporarily gave up his stance as polite host to become ruthless, undefeated champion at table football, well champion in his own house at least. I declined the invitation to take part in the game and opted for the much easier task of spinning a few toons. Eventually I succumbed to tiredness and went to bed leaving the boys to their “soul talk”.
All in all, the entire trip to Portsmouth was more than worth the journey time. An excellent soul night, with a great music policy, run by excellent people, attended by friendly “up for it” soulies. Keep it up boy’s you deserve to succeed. Your enthusiasm and passion for the scene is blatantly obvious to anyone who cares to make the journey to Cosham to attend “The Southern Soul Movement” Northern soul night. For details of future nights I think they have or are in the process of setting up a website so try www.southernsoulmovement.com. I promise you if you’re into quality Northern Soul music you won’t be disappointed.
Just left to say a huge thanks to Carol & Steve for looking after us so well, you were great hosts and made us feel very welcome. I hope we can reciprocate sometime.
PS: Sorry about the missing towels, it was Col who “stole” them, seems he was a little over enthusiastic when he packed the overnight bag, at least I stopped his blatant attempt to re-house your golliwog ;-))

QUALITY RE-ISSUE FUNK 45s - SOUL - 70s
The First Release on Fryers records was a tough choice but in the end two strong dancefloor classics won through. Pressed in Memphis the way 45s should be and taken from the Original master tapes Fryer is proud to present............
A: Barbara Lynn - Im a Good Woman
Listen Note: This is a different mix down to the original 45 .
Barbara Lynn Ozen born 16 January 1942, Beaumont , Texas , USA has a strong career producing soul music. Her early records were released on the Jamie label one of which (Youll Lose a Good Thing) was a top ten hit. In the later 60s she then started issuing records on Huey P. Meaux (her producer) Label "Tribe" on which the 45 " Im a good woman " was cut. Popular on the northern soul scene in the 70s and 80s, it was then picked up by Funk 45 djs in the late 90s when Ian Wright compiled it on his album ' Sister Funk turning many on to the wealth of good funky tracks hiding in northern soul boxes. The driving beat and delivery of the vocal ensure that it will destroy any dancefloor it is played on, be it Funk, Soul, R&B or Hip-hop, just listen to the first 10 seconds and you are hooked in.
B: James Young&The Housewreckers - Barkin up the Wrong Tree
Listen Here we have one of the best (not the rarest) funk 45 ever to come out of Texas , a state that seems give up a new, classic lost funk 45 every other day. This is the same band that hit the charts in the early 60s as Big Sambo & The Housewreckers. That shot at the limelight came to an abrupt and when certain civil rights leaders took exception to the name 'Big Sambo. Needless to say they kept at it, and cranked out this blistering slammer. 'Barking Up The Wrong Tree features a wild vocal and shrieking sax by Young, and solid, extremely funky backing by the aptly named House Wreckers.
Very popular on hip-hop and funk dancefloors for a few years now its become a £40+ 45 as the original has dried up, so this issue should quench the demand for this rare barn stormer.
The info on James Young was Taken from www.funky16corners.net a fantasic resource for information on Funk and R&B bands

Soul Biscuits is back again..in Sydney Australia!!
Well after the success of the first Soul Biscuits Northern Soul Club in Sydney. Keith Miller originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, played to a packed house of 210 strong on a Wednesday night in a Cocktail Bar in Sydney. Now that is something, especially in the dance music capital.
Its now believe it or not been recognized as a new and up and coming Northern Soul Club in Australia and the world. Keith has taken his idea and made it a success in Australia and Sydney, which is a very hard thing to do. He has now had confirmation from the management to do a night on the last Wednesday of every month. Also has guaranteed that there is 100% floor shaking Northern Soul and will give the first hour of his club to up and coming young talent and letting them play what ever they like. He has also kept it as a free club and has got the manager to sell cheap drink and has a cocktail named after his club called a Soul Biscuit. Also Keith has been known to throw away the Northern Soul Classics and play Motown classics and it works. As most in Australia have never heard of Northern Soul. So Keith is working day and night to get it through to the Sydney sider's that Northern Soul isnt going anywhere. Keith has also managed to get Steve Bardsley back from Melbourne to DJ and also a long standing Northern Soul DJ George Coumbis(Agent 00 Soul) also a Northern Soul radio DJ in Sydney, to play 2 more hour sets and if its anything like the last one, the place will be buzzing again. Keith, Steve and George have proved to be a force in Sydney and shall be again. If your planning a holiday to Australia, make it before Soul Biscuits starts on the last Wednesday of every month. Because of this, Keith also wants and is looking for people from UK to DJ in his club and has spots for anyone that lets him know. As it's a free club there isnt any money floating on it. So bring your records over and Keith will give you a spot. Give him one months notice to the below email address.
Its good to see that Northern Soul is as big in Australia as it is in the UK.

Once Upon A Time In Wigan CD Release
This month (Feb 04) sees the release of ONCE UPON A TIME IN WIGAN (CDKEND 227 Kent/Ace Records) the soundtrack to a the play based on the lives of four 70s teenagers who spend their adolescence growing up at the shrine to Northern Soul, the Wigan Casino
The following write up is via Ady Croasdell.
Never before has Kent released such an unashamed "All The Hits" Northern Soul package. The excuse that we needed was being asked to produce the soundtrack CD for the new play "Once Upon A Time In Wigan". Early last year director Paul Sadot kindly invited me up to Leeds for the opening night at its second venue, having been enthusiastically received in Manchester the previous week. After hearing good reviews I was keen to attend to see if at last someone had represented the Northern Soul scene to its credit, rather than as an odd spectacle as is normally the case. I was delighted to find a packed house, in a great theatre and was honoured with the company of Tommy Hunt in the adjacent seat. By the time we left the auditorium I was even happier and the warm glow of nostalgia indicated that at last the Wigan Casino, as I remembered it, had been represented accurately, with affection, and a great deal of honest humour.
As a regular all-nighter goer you can get over-exposed to records like Timi Yuros It'll Never Be Over For Me or Dean Parrishs Im On My Way, but when you hear them in the context of the play, you realise that is only because they are such marvellous records that DJs and punters demand to hear them time and time again. The play will serve as an introduction for some and as a reminder to others of what they've been missing. Therefore stone classics are exactly whats required and thats what weve come up with on this CD. Lou Prides I'm Comun Home In The Mornun (I have no idea why its spelt like that) has an absolutely original sound that no-one ever tried to copy. Its one of those ultra-rare records that could have been made just for the Northern Soul scene, and has flourished thousands of miles from its home. Similarly World Columns So Is The Sun and Steve Karmen's Breakaway are edgy, turn of the decade, psycho-soul stompers.
They also found their audience of speeding working class youths, spinning and back-dropping on the dancefloors of northern England, belatedly. Wigan Casino started out playing mainstream discoveries and we've featured a trio from the ultimate, Northern label, Mirwood. Jackie Lee and Bobby Garrett, aka Bob Relf, were the Bob&Earl who appeared on Harlem Shuffle and all subsequent recordings by the duo. They also shone as solo performers on Oh My Darlin and My Little Girl respectively, which are pure Northern Soul classics. As is Richard Temples That Beatin Rhythm also released on the same label. Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons The Night was such a monster record when Wigan ruled the soul world, that it eventually made it to #7 in the UK. That was three years after its initial Motown subsidiary Mowest release, and it never even got a 45 release in the States. The Yanks were, and still are, bewildered by the NS phenomenon.
Other tracks featured in the play like the Incredibles There's Nothing Else To Say and Fats Domino's It Keeps Rainin were responsible for starting the whole Northern Soul thing off in the late 60s before the Casino had opened its doors. These tracks were later played in the hugely popular Mister Ms oldies room within the vast building, and its popularity meant that eventually the venue would host the first "Oldies" nighters which were often better attended than the regular dances. Northern Soul has progressed and widened its boundaries since the Casino closed in 1981, and the show reflects this.
Included are tracks such as Sam Fletchers moody Id Think It Over and early 90s Stax discovery Otis Reddings Loving By The Pound, which gets a second Kent release due to its recent popularity in the R&B stomper-loving community of the North-West. The equally gritty soul sound of Toni & The Showmen's Try My Love is also given a second airing to a bigger audience and shows how there's plenty of rare soul vinyl out there to be resurrected too.
The booklet contains pen-portrait reviews of the tracks and stills and reviews from the play itself to link the music to its audience. It also contains wise words and reminiscences from Northern Soul luminaries Russ Winstanley and Richard Searling and that's a first in recent years.

Herb Johnson R.I.P. 2004
Herb Johnson passed away Monday January 19th in Philadelphia, PA of cancer, aged 68.
Born December 26th, 1935 in North Carolina, Herb moved to Philadelphia with his family when he was nine years old. As a teenager attending Overbrook High School, Herb auditioned at the Royal Theatre on South Street for a radio spot on WPEN, singing "You Belong To Me" by one of his favorite groups, The Orioles.
In 1953 Herb joined the U.S. Air Force, singing with a group called The Lyrics who performed on USO tours singing R&B hits of the day. By the mid fifties, he began singing with a West Philly vocal group The Ambassadors who participated in a talent show at the Leader Theatre at 41st and Lancaster Avenue.
By 1960 Herb made his first single for Len Records called "Guilty", a local hit, selling over 50,000 copies in the Philadelphia area alone. Shortly after, he recorded two singles for V-Tone Records and by the mid 60s recorded some soul 45s for Swan, Arctic and Tyler Records which are still popular with soul fans in England. Herb, along with Kenny Gamble sang the male backing vocals on Barbara Masons hit, "Yes Im Ready". With his instrumental group The Impacts, Herb performed all over the Philadelphia club circuit throughout the 60s and early 70s.
The bass player for The Impacts, Wally Osborne, formed the Toxan label in 1968, releasing Herbs uptempo soul classic, "Im So Glad". This record did well enough to get released nationally on Brunswick and became a hit in England when it reached their shores five years later. By the early 70s, Herb released the funky "Damph Faint" for Toxan which was recorded in one take in a basement studio inside a shoe store in Northeast Philly called Impact Sound . This song has been on many funk collections over the years and was recently reissued properly on Herbs CD called "Remember Me".
Herb continued singing with acappella groups The Zip Codes and A Moments Pleasure and he recently performed some live shows with a new band featuring guitarist Bobby Eli who played with Herb in the original Impacts group. This past summer, Herb recorded a single for the Timmion label in Finland called "Make You Wanna Holler".

SOUL IN THE CITY - NEW VENUE
Yes were on the move again, after 6 brilliant months at nylon we were evicted just before our January event.
Despite the fact that their management initially approached us to put on a Northern night & their club was empty 5 nights a week they decided that our music alienated their clientele & the 150 that we averaged each month wasnt enough for them.
Not to worry, Im pleased to say that we have managed to secure a brilliant venue just 5 minutes down the road at
Vivo 17 Watling Street London EC4,
Its an atmospheric air conditioned bar just 1 minute from Mansion House tube & a few minutes from St Pauls, Bank & Cannon Street . Although spread over two floors the upstairs bar will be closed although the cloakroom will be open & we will be stomping in the basement where there is plenty of comfy seating , a talc friendly wooden dance floor & a large bar where you will be pleased to hear there will be drinks promotions until 8pm. Pint of Lager (Carlsberg or Carling cant remember which but it begins with a C! selected other drinks all at £1.50 & even at normal prices still a lot cheaper than Nylon !
As before we will be starting at 6.30 & going on until Macs had enough, normally around 12.30-1.00
& you will hear across the board sixties, unknowns, underplayed oldies, current plays & classic oldies
all mixed together, from Beat Ballads through to 100mph Stompers.
A very big thanks to everyone who has supported us over the last 2 years & we hope to see you at
ViVos on 4th February & the 1st Wednesday of every month. Entrance £4.00

Wellingborough 10th Anniversary soul night
A bit of History.
I started promoting back in 1985 with a fortnightly Soul / Mod night called 'The Wollaston Rhythm and Soul Club'. Which ran for about 4 years. Then in 1992 together with Rob Glover started the soul nights at The Embankment Club under the banner 'Soul Time Promotions' which ran for about 2 years. Rob went on to run a club called 'The Buzz' which was to play other music such as deep funk etc. So in 1994 still at The Embankment Club I started 'The Wellingborough Soul Club'.
My initial reason for starting the club was because at that time other soul nights only catered for the masses but there was a niche in the market for the records I wanted to play and to get dj spots at other venues was impossible especially for someone so young. (" No I haven't been to Wigan, yes I apologise!")
The music policy has always been 'Must be Soulful' and over the years I have gradually been able to encourage dj's to experiment more and more, admittedly we have lost some of the oldies fans because of this but new people have replaced them keeping the attendance the same (150 - 200)
Attendance in the early days was around 100 but in 1996 I decided to get Soul Sam to dj. At this time none of the 'Big name' dj's had been to the area for at least 20 years so that was a buzz in its self. Well I was chuffed as that night the attendance rocketed to 180 and has stayed the same since, always using well-known dj's as well as local dj's.
I'd like to thank everyone who has helped keep the club going - Giving out flyers, 'positive' word of mouth... now there's a thought ... 'Why are people who don't agree with your music policy so vocal about it?'
Anyway as I was saying, thanks also goes to everyone who has dj'd at the club including - Dave Vanner, Ciro (Also for your decks in the 1st few years), Tony Parker, Cliff Steel, Carl Fortnum, Gary Spencer, Hammy, Shaun Chapman, Sid, Rupert, Dave Fleming, John Weston, Derek Alan, Chris Anderton, Sooty! Kev Draper, Tony Warrot, The 4 Old Gits, Steve and a very young Lee Jeffries, Keith Woon, Irish Greg, Brian Goucher, Carl Boddington, Keith Jones, Glen Bellamy, Rob Holmes, Teff, Johnny Timlin, Saus, Gavin Page, Ion, Ady Croasdell, Adam, Shifty, Butch, Soul Sam, Roger Banks, Bob Hinsley 'n' Robbo (Never forget those nights) Mick Smith (Especially for not telling anybody about my mum 15 years ago ringing up for a record by 'The Cods' - She meant 'The C.O.D's!!! Mind you wasn't as embarrassing as when she said to Soul Sam "You must be Sammy Soul" - Mum!!! Thanks to Nicola for helping behind the bar the night we had over 200 in. Also to the person who sent me £50.00 back in the early days to help me with the cost of running it (I've never forgot that act of kindness) Above all every one who has attended.
Many people have asked why I don't put the Soul nights on more often - Reason being that nowadays there is simply not enough room in the 'Northern Soul Calendar' - Not sure if that's healthy or not but I can't risk clashing with loads of other events so I prefer to put on fewer nights with higher numbers.
Well see you on 16th April,
All the best,
Len Dopson.
Dates for 2004 - Fri April 16th, Fri Sep 24th, Fri Dec 3rd .
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN RE: PLINSTON TONIGHT...
George Jackson Lives! 2004
Some of you may know that we have had to cancel several George Jackson events at short notice in the last few months, due to the venue giving priority to private bookings at the weekends.
This uncertainty meant that we were unable to promote the events properly and as a result we felt that we were unable to continue with the night.
After consultation with SMERSH bar, we can announce that we will return in 2004 with a new midweek slot. Our new night will be held every third Wednesday of the month, Starting on January 21st from 7.000 - 12.00 with no entry charge.
Together with “A New Chapter” on the first Wednesday of every month, this means that there will be quality midweek soul at Smersh every fortnight (or thereabouts).
In the past George Jackson! has sometimes been misrepresented as a purely deep soul night, partly our own fault. As regulars will know we have always endeavoured to play the full spectrum of tempos and styles of soul music. If you don’t believe us, look at the sample playlist below!
Knight Brothers - Tried So Hard To Please Her (Mercury)
Jeannie Reynolds & The Re-leets - I Dont Mess Around (Washington)
Mahalia Jackson - Im On My Way (Apollo)
Dorothy Morrison - I Cant Go Without You (Brown Door)
Wee Willie Walker - I Dont Want To Take A Chance (Goldwax unissued - Vivid Sound LP)
Willie Tee - Walking Up A One Way Street (Nola)
Sandra Wright - Ill Come Running Back (Demon LP)
Soul Children - Were Gettin’ Too Close (Stax LP)
Kenny Hamber - Anything You Want (Arctic)
Connie Laverne - I Cant Live Without You (GSF)
Skip Jackson & The Shantons - Promise That You’ll Wait (Dot-Mar)
The Masqueraders - Please take me Back (Bell)
The Impalas - Speed Up (Capitol)
Bobby Womack - Baby, I Cant Stand It (Minit)
Roosevelt Matthews With Billy Ball & the Upsetters - You Got Me Diggin You (King)
Lee Jones & The Sounds Of Soul - This House is haunted (Amy)
The Charades - Never Set Me Free (MGM)
John Edwards - Its Those Little Things That Count (Bell)
The new slot will provide an opportunity to widen the remit even further. Simply, black American music from the soul.
As a celebration we shall be giving away a compilation CD featuring the best of the sounds played at George Jackson over the last three years. So if you are looking for something to do on the 21st, come on down to Smersh.

Review: Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - Jazz Cafe
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings at the Jazz Cafe, London on Friday 9th January 2004
Fellow Soul Source, James Trouble is the DJ tonight and he plays a blinding 2 hour set to warm up the crowd. At 9.30pm, 8 men walk onto the stage looking more Reservoir Dogs than funk musicians, in their black suits, ties and white shirts. The Dap Kings are the house band for Daptone records and are made up of musicians from The Soul Providers and the Mighty Imperials, both of which gained recognition for laying the music behind Desco Records’ legendary catalogue of funk 45s and Lps.
The show commences with two hard instrumentals to get this Friday night crowd moving. As they begin to play “The Cassella Walk”, Dave, the trumpet player and MC walks over to the main mic to speak. “Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Daptone Super Soul Revue. We are the Dap Kings and we’d like to introduce you to a funky and dynamic sister. The star of our show, the No.1 funk sister. Miss Sharon Jones!”
If you’ve seen this whirlwind live before, you know Sharon Jones is not one to waste time. With braids in her hair and a black baby doll dress, the five foot tall stick of dynamite backslides between the horn players, grabs the mic and declares that she has something on her mind she needs to share - cue her first single ‘Got a thing on my mind’ - a beautiful fast and tight track which was an overnight hit in the US. Spicing it up in the bridge, she shouts, “ got a thing on ma mind Mr Bush! Tell me, tell me, if the war in Iraq is over why don’t you send our brothers and sisters home!”
Men are still on her mind in the next song - a cover of ‘What have you done for me lately’.
“Miss Jackson did this song but i’m taking it and making it funk!” A mood brass section starts the song, the rhythm section kicks in and Sharon starts singing in a way only a great funk singer can ... “What have you done for me lately, I ain’t talking about last year, last month, last week, or yesterday. What have you done for me in the last second... huh!”
Next up is a gritty version of “Things Got To Get Better”, written by James Brown and originally sung by Marva Whitney. It’s here I realise that Sharon’s voice is more akin of the higher range’s Lyn Collins and Vicky Anderson but it works brilliantly on this track.
Sharon was born in Augusta, Georgia in the late 50s. As she shares with the crowd a story of her and her brother as kids practising the moves of fellow Georgian, James Brown, the Dap Kings take us into their third song and final cover, “There was a Time”. This gives Ms Jones the perfect opportunity to showcase her own floor work - the JB shuffle, mash potato, jerk, camel walk, boogaloo and finishing with the “Miss Sharon Jones”.
By now no one in the Jazz Cafe is standing still (except for the couple sucking each other’s faces off next to us!) The incredible wall of sound generated by the Dap Kings sounds as fresh now as it was when the godfather of soul played the New York Apollo 30 odd years ago.
Giving the crowd time to cool down, the next song is ‘Ain’t it Hard’, quickly followed by some audience participation for ‘Give Me A Chance’ as Sharon drags punters willing and good enough to dance on stage, encouraging them to “Shake the thang your mama give you!” James where was Annie! This also gives the guitar and bass section of the Dap Kings a chance to shine.
‘How Long Have I Got To Wait’ is followed by ‘You Make Me Feel Good’ and Ms Jones introduces each member of the Dap Kings, their respective tools of the trade and the reasons each one of them “make me feel good”. Tonight the band worked through most of their repertoire laid to tape, ‘Make It Good to Me’, ‘Got to Be the Way It Is’ being my favourites, and a few numbers I haven’t heard before including “I’m Glad” and ‘I Ain’t Paying’.
With each ensuing song the temperature continues to rise in the Jazz Cafe, Ms. Jones winding the room tighter and tighter with her tireless Dap Kings. She finished the show with ‘I’m Genuine’ (remember folks they’re American do genuine rhymes with serpentine!) and we head of into the cold night air shaking the thing our mama gave us.
The Dap Kings were:
Drums - Homer “Funky Foot” Jenkins
Congos – Fernando Velez
Guitar - TNT
Guitar - Al
Bass - Bosco ‘bass’ Mann (writer and arrange of all songs)
Tenor Sax - Otis Youngblood
Tenor Sax - Neil Sugarman (of Sugarman 3)
Dave Guy - Trumpet and MC

We spoke to a Daptone rep on the night who was selling their catalogue of 45s. Sharon Jones’ version of ‘Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)’ is not set to be released on single yet but it is likely to be on their second album (date of release unknown).

Davids post
After three years we have decided to call it a day with George Jackson!, so I am afraid there will be no more events for the foreseeable future. Thanks for the support from all those that attended and to all our guest DJs. Anthony, Gareth, Mark and myself will continue to seek out great soul records and perhaps one day we will put on more great nights. In the meantime, for any that are interested I shall be playing at Kev Moores Grapevine Soul nights in Brixton, no doubt spinning a few GJ favourites.
Best wishes,
David Nossiter

We did incur minor problems with the sound system on the first allnighter which has now been sorted.A big thanks to everybody concerned up and down the country that has helped out getting this venue up and running. It is mainly word of mouth that brings the people back to Ashby.Feedback phone calls emails etc have been very encouraging.
The December 13th gig went very well although we walked away £50 out of pocket. We left next morning with huge grins on our faces knowing we have a special venue here.At the end of the day we are just normal soulful people that dont look to make a profit out of it,but provide the entertainment that the midlands was missing since Bretby allnigher shut down.
We will continue to keep the event running all year, and thanks again for all your valued support.
All The Best Steve Wileman (South Derbyshire Soul Club).
LOTS OF LOVE AND BIG THANK YOU
Big Thank You to Michele (dj at Greenwich on tonite) for her spot, everyone commented on how good it was, which it was (also for keeping the secret even when we went out the other nite!). Also to Taff, who always keeps everyone happy, even when my family requested other music.
To everyone who couldnt make it or my daughter forgot to ask, you missed a great nite, e.g. DArcy, Trickster & Etsu in Japan, Dolly in Labour!
Hoping I wont forget anyone who attended BIG THANK YOU TO - Terry Cozens, Tony Wildman & Jackie, Kez & Barry, Kay & Mark, Mike & Liam, Trish & Paul, Toby & his wife, Chantelle & Hubby, and everyone else who I have probably forgotten - very sorry.
One person on everyones mind last nite, WHO WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN, & of course, couldnt attend, RANDY COZENS. x x x
2003 UPPERS & DOWNERS
The highs of the year for me were Dean Parrish at Cleethorpes and of course Maxine, great as ever, the Plinston 1st Anniversary and going from strength to strength, managing to get Butch & Mick on there for January16th.A thought for the new year-Have fun, keep it soulful whether its 60s 70s 80s 90s or Y2K ITS ALL SOUL THE MUSIC WE LOVE.
Hi Taff, lovely to read what you said about Randy, I have had few people say to me how things arent the same without him, I certainly know that too. Many of us will always miss him just as much as we loved and cared for him, I know you would agree with me on that. I hope the new year will be good to you as well as others. Im going to listen to all singing all dancing now and hoping a tribute will go out to Randy who did so much for the scene and hoping that will always be remembered. He will certainly always be in my heart.

6Ts at the 100 Club January 10th 2004 - first play!
Get your twinkling feet down to the 100 Club this Saturday January 10th ......
1.30-8am if you want to hear one of the greatest northern discoveries of all time.
Think of one of the top three classic northern instrumentals that have never had a genuine vocal. Then imagine a full male soul vocal group giving it all theyve got over the top of it.
This was recorded at the same time as the instrumental and has laid dormant for 35+ years.
Be among the chosen few to hear and dance to it on its first ever public appearance.
Funk Brothers - Manchester and London 29-30 Jan 04
The dates are Jan. 29th at the Apollo in Manchester and Jan. 30th in London at Royal Festival Hall.
We will be playing some predictable Motown songs but also some off-the-beaten track Motown and non-Motown songs the guys played on like "Function At The Junction," "Here Come The Judge," "Cool Jerk," "The Flick," and others.
Its usually not good form to go on websites to promote commercial ventures but in the case of the Funk Brothers, it falls more into the realm of a good deed as theyve waited four decades for the recognition and awards they e now receiving.
There are other European dates also scheduled on the tour which can be found on our website: www.standingintheshadowsofmotown.com

Smoove Groove - Modern Soul In Dublin
Union Club 02 Jan 04 - New Year Highlight
ON THE SCENE - New Issue out!!!
Sleepless Nights Dublin Info and News
It may be winter outside Big Daddys Soul Shack
Firstly I cant believe the huge number of hits my recent posting on the bootleg issue got, its fantastic to gain mainly support for my comments so thanks for that, all we need to do is Keep It Real and we should be fine.
2003 has been a fantastic year on the rare soul scene with many of the venues doing really well, some might say that there is a little too much on at the present time but one thing is the scene is possibly the most busy it has ever been over the past four decades and long may it continue.
Im really looking forward to 2004 as there are already some very tasty events to look forward to during the early part of the new year in particular the second New Century Soul Club Allnighter in Manchester on Saturday January 31st, this time in two rooms and if the massive first event was anything to go by it is hoped that the 700 plus people who attended will return with a friend and then this venue will be without question one of the leading Northern Soul venues in the country. 9pm through 7am -
DJs include TIM BROWN, MICK H, DAVE RIMMER, JO WALLACE, GARY COPE, KIDDO AND MYSELF IN THE MAIN ROOM AND RUSS WINSTANLEY, DAVE EVISON, STEVE WHITTLE AND BRIAN RAE IN THE DOWNSTAIRS SECOND ROOM which also hosts the after show party for Paul Sadots Once Upon A Time In Wigan production which ends its Manchester run and the start of the UK tour, so very much a Wigan Casino flava in room two that night.
The New Century event will run on the final Saturday every month throughout 2004 and there are some outstanding DJs booked in to play at future nights. Again thanks to everyone who attended the first Allnighter back on December 6th, it was simply a magic night and has set the venue in a good position to be able to grow to a bigger and better event. Plenty of soul gigs to attend over the Christmas period so have a fantastic time wherever you end up, also if you fancy a good soul night out check out
THE LIME STREET CLUB, CHAPEL STREET, OFF KING STREET, DUKINFIELD NEAR MANCHESTER ON SATURDAY DECEMBER 27TH - FROM 8PM THROUGH LATE, WITH DJS ALEX JONES, EDDIE ENGLES, SID JONES, MARK BICKNELL AND VERY SPECIAL GUESTS MICK H AND BIRTHDAY GIRL JUMPING JOAN - ADMISSION ADVANCE TICKET £4.00 OR £4.50 PAY ON THE DOOR PLUS A FREE SAMPLE CD FROM SID JONES TO THE FIRST 50 THROUGH THE DOOR FOR FURTHER INFORMATION TELEPHONE 0161 330 6267 OR 0161 338 7294 - A fantastic little soul night well worth a visit, good sound system, cheap bar, nice dance floor and used but not abused music policy.
Last but not least the massive Midnight Hour soul weekender is only a few weeks off now and bookings are well over 2000 so if you plan on going i would suggest that you get your bookings in now rather than miss out on what promises to be a huge event, details can be found here on Soulsource so check out the details as soon as you can. I trust you will all get what you desire this Christmas, mines a George Pepp if anyone can help....................... still cant complain as my wife Jacqui paid for a couple of recent Ebay wins as part of my Christmas present so i love her to bits.
Respect and big up to Mike Hughes and all at Soulsource, thanks to all the promoters who have booked me this year, big thanks to Chris Waterman and Lee Crank of The New Century Soul Club for having the faith in me to play at few tunes at their bright, fresh new venue in Manchester at the CIS and for supporting my radio show on Solar Radio,
SORRY IF I GO OVER THE TOP SOMETIMES ON CERTAIN ISSUES AND TOPICS CONNECTED WITH OUR SCENE BUT I ONLY DO IT AND SAY THE THINGS I SAY IF ITS WRONG OR OUT OF ORDER, WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER FOR THE REST OF OUR DAYS SO WE MUST RESPECT THE MUSIC, THE SCENE AND EACH OTHER IF WE ARE TO CONTINUE THIS AMAZING JOURNEY, ITS WITH US FOR LIFE GUYS SO LETS AT LEAST TRY TO GET ON EVEN IF SOME OF US CANT, LETS KEEP IT REAL AND STAY TRUE TO THE ORIGINS OF THE SCENE AND LETS MOVE ON AND FILL AS MANY VENUES AS WE CAN THROUGHOUT THE UK, IF NOTHING ELSE THE MUSIC DESERVES THAT RESPECT.
Its about people, its about sharing the whole deal, no one person is bigger than the music and we must at all cost let the scene survive and blossom because as Dena Barnes said If you ever walk out of my life there be tear drops and heartaches..........imagine life without this beautiful scene of ours.....I cant. To all promoters, DJs, collectors, dancers, record dealers in the land you, we, all of us make the scene what it is, there may be petty politics from time to time, we all dont agree on certain aspects of how the scene is run and worked but what we should all have in common is a passion for what we do and how we do it from the local 200 capacity venue to the monster events they are all keeping the whole thing going and im proud to be a part of just about the best cult music scene in the world.
Happy Christmas -
Keep It Real - Mark Bicknell.
