These Old Shoes- David Blaine special!!!

No David isnt guesting unfortunately, but he is available for you to pass on your warmest regards and/or abuse in his perspex cage just a double decks length away from the River Bar, Tower Bridge Road, London where These Old Shoes is happening a week on Thursday (October 9th). (nearest tube London Bridge or Tower Hill). Thats if he can last that long! Regulars DJs: Jo Wallace, Alan Handscombe, Martin Thomson plus guest Yann Vatiste. 8pm-12am, £4 on the door playing 60s newies, R&B, classic northern and motown. One of Londons longest running northern soul nights, now heading rapidly towards its FIFTH anniversary! Please note: that due to a national outbreak of "Blaine Baiting" (which has replaced home improvement as the national pastime)- there may be traffic delays over tower bridge as people queue up to laugh at a man who dares to call himself a "friend" of Uri Geller.

Ace Records Oct 2003 new cd releases

New Releases for OCTOBER 2003 from Ace Records HY WEISS presents OLD TOWN RECORDS - ACE - CDCH2 979 It is hard to believe that this year marks the Golden Anniversary of Hy Weiss Old Town Records, the New York label that meant so much to me in my youth, and still does. So what did you want to be when you grew up? A rocknroll star, a baseball player, or maybe even a cop or a fireman? I wanted to be a record man, and Hy Weiss and Old Town Records were my first role models. more JIMMY NELSON / Cry Hard Luck - ACE - CDCHD 976 Its now been almost a quarter of a century since Ace struck its first deal to release masters from the Modern/RPM/Kent/Flair group of labels. Shortly thereafter - in the early 1980s, to be exact - we set up our first "ten inch series" and quickly released a slew of fine albums from some of Moderns mainstays of the early 50s, among them Jimmy McCracklin, Oscar McLollie and Jimmy "T-99" Nelson. more PHILS SPECTRE / A Wall Of Soundalikes - ACE - CDCHD 978 Phil Spectors vision rose far above and beyond that of any of his contemporaries. In fact, Spector saw himself as the sole occupant of a parallel recording universe where his was the only way, and everyone else was nowhere. This, to a large degree, was what made him different and difficult in equal measure. more THE JOHNNY OTIS SHOW / Vintage 1950s Broadcasts From Los Angeles - ACE - CDCHD 981 When Johnny Otis first made a name for himself in Los Angeles, it was the post-war golden era of Hamp and Mingus, Club Alabam, The Barrelhouse and Central Avenue; the urban crucible within which jazz begat rhythm and blues. A couple of years into the next decade, the action had to shifted slightly to Western and Broadway, Club Oasis, Club Alimony and the 5/4 Ballroom. All these thoroughfares were still geographical slivers of the black American community within the district known as Watts, a community as artistically vibrant as it was economically disenfranchised. more CREEDENCE CLEAWATER REVIVAL / Bad Moon Rising: The Best Of - FANTASY - CDFE 500 Creedence Clearwater Revival were a huge part of my mid-to-late teens. They seemed to come out of nowhere (which I later found out was actually a place in California called El Cerrito, a very nice town just north-east of San Francisco) at the beginning of 1969, and for a couple of subsequent years they dominated the US and UK charts with a string of hit singles that were, and remain, everything that good pop music always ought to be - short, sharp and to the point, and 35 years on, timeless in the way that only the best popular music - from Sun to Motown, Sinatra to the Sex Pistols - can be. more THE IMPRESSIONS / The Definitive Impressions Part 2 - KENT - CDKEND 213 This release speaks or sings for itself. Given the success and critical acclaim showered upon our best selling DEFINITIVE IMPRESSIONS, Kent CDKEND 923, we had a hard act to follow. more MASTERPIECES OF MODERN SOUL - KENT - CDKEND 222 To the uninitiated I wont go into the full explanation of Modern Soul, there are more than enough words in the sleevenotes. Suffice it to say that it is primarily danceable 70s soul music with a solid, as opposed to a funky beat. more Produced by Ace Records Ltd

MASTERPIECES OF MODERN SOUL - KENT - CDKEND 222

Release from Kent A varied collection of classy, mainly 70s, dance tracks that have consistently filled the floors of Modern soul rooms. Sleeve/release notes by Ady
To the uninitiated I won't go into the full explanation of Modern Soul, there are more than enough words in the sleevenotes. Suffice it to say that it is primarily danceable 70s soul music with a solid, as opposed to a funky beat.
Having said that, the Modern Soul crowd has a very liberal view on what is danceable and having emerged at least partly as an antidote to the 100mph Northern Soul stompers, are willing to wander on to the dancefloor to the most laid-back of tunes. In fact the intimacy of many of their venues and the occasional lack of floor space often sees discerning soul fans grooving to their favourites on linoleum, sticky carpet or even table tops. The quality of the song and the singer's performance are given higher priority than the correctness of the rhythm, while clever dance moves are considered less important than say flowery bowling shirts or an encyclopaedic knowledge of Tyrone Davis' recording career.

BBC Radio 2 New Year and 2004 news and request

Hi everyone, received this note from Dave Shannon, the guy who organises Radio 2s northern soul progs.. too late for this ish of Soul Up North, so perhaps you might want to add your input... cheers.. Howard (editor - Soul Up North)
Hi Howard Could you let your readers know that they can bring in the New Year with another special edition of All Singing All Dancing All Night. BBC Radio Two has asked Stuart Maconie to present a show to help usher in 2004, the third year in succession the network has filled this high profile slot with Northern Soul. Stuart will be on air from 00.30 - 3.00 on Thursday 1st January. Requests should be sent to asadan@bbc.co.uk and if possible people should let us know where theyre likely to be partying as well.
Our snail mail address is Room 414, BBC, Pebblemill Rd, Birmingham B5 7QQ Looking further ahead our next six week series begins mid March, probably Wednesday 17th but Ill confirm the exact date nearer the time.
It has taken four or five years of hard work to win a regular place for Northern Soul in Radio Twos prestigious raft of specialist programmes and Stuart and I want to hear from fans what tracks, guests and features they want to hear.
That way we can keep hitting the right target and secure the exposure Northern Soul deserves. Cheers for now and keep up the good work
Dave Shannon (Producer, ASADAN)
Howard posted up this on the email side of soul talk and reposted here as wants word spread!

NORTHERN SOUL @ THE PLINSTON! 1st ANNIVERSARY BRIEF REPORT

All 3 rooms saw heavy dance floor action, with an enthusiastic up-for-it crowd from the start dripping sweat and an electric atmosphere that filled the building. Even the fact that the Main Bar was shut due to refurbishment, resulting in the SG6 Bar being used as the main bar and a temporary bar set up in the Mojo Room, didn't dampen the spirits. Everyone received a free woven anniversary patch and a raffle ticket as they walked through the door and the usual warm greeting from the Sinister Sisters.

The mix of sounds was well balanced and all the DJ's, the Usual Suspects and guests alike, did a blinding job. Current Monsters, Forgotten Oldies, New Discoveries and Complete One-Off Exclusives (Soul Sam had stopped off at Manship's on the way down and visited Butch earlier) mixed with those Plinston anthems which had many dancing for the full 6 hrs. The Main Hall was rammed, the Mojo Room saw it's busiest night ever (so much so that at one stage when Big Daddy Bicknell was on you couldn't even get into the room!) and the Ghetto! lived up to Sam's declaration that it was certainly one of the best Modern rooms in the country. Praise indeed. On a lighter note, the best moment of the night came for me in The Ghetto! when I needed to get to the decks. The room was jammed solid with people getting down (even Mr Flynn was seen up there at one stage) and I had to raise my arms above my head to squeeze through. Halfway down the hall I look behind and everyone was now dancing with their arms high in the air, quickly becoming the whole room! My pleas that I wasn't getting them to dance like me fell on deaf ears as I was carried along on a tide of arm waving, grooving people. It was a special moment - NUTTERS!!!

Our thanks go to Mark Bicknell, Soul Sam and Dave 'Morten' Flynn who between them all played truly excellent sets, perhaps the best I've heard them play all year. They went down a storm with the appreciate crowd and truly deserved the thunderous applause they received. The Usual Suspects were also on top form and thanks go to them for their support to the club and for spinning those rare platters over the past 12 months.

The dance competition lived up to our promise of being one with a distinct 6T's Mafia twist, which saw the dancers dancing to Mr Day 'Soul On Wax' and The Coasters 'Crazy Baby' for the first round. The sea of dancers was then whittled down to 6 to dance in the final and this is where we retained our Mafia vibe as they were then forced to dance to win to the cheesy Latin dancer that is Al Escobar&His Swinging Camels 'I Watched You Slowly Slip Away'. The looks on their faces and the laughter and smiles from the crowd that filled the hall made it a MasterCard moment - priceless! The winners of the cash were Carol in 1st place, Trixster in 2nd and the lovely Dave Hill from Slade (Reg) in 3rd. Roll on next year's comp and you have been warned!

The raffle draw saw many winning CD's, DVD (Standing In The Shadows Of Motown), baseball caps, record vouchers and for one lucky winner free entry as a 'Made Man' to the Plinston for a year. Thanks go to Beatin' Rhythm Records in Manchester, Turntable Record Lists and Keith Hammond for their kind donations.

2am came around too soon and we ended the night with the Plinston anthem 'We're having a Friday Night Get-Together' by Eddy Jacobs and the place erupted with cheers, calls for more and one or two tears for what had been a brilliant night.

Our thanks go to all who supported us, not only on the night but also throughout the year. The Plinston is only successful and as popular as it is because of your support and we truly appreciate it. Thanks are also due to the Sinister Sisters of Jane, Kay, Sarah and Jenny for their tireless work on the door, taking both the praise, chat-up lines and abuse as well as the money.

Roll on Friday 14th November when we kick start our 2nd year with Mick H and Terry Jones - Remember, there is a reason why we say 'HERTS - FULL OF SOUL!'

* Footnote: As that grand old wizard of Modern/Crossover Soul, the legend that is Soul Sam, snuggled up in our spare room bed at the end of what had been a great night for him, how I longed for a camera to record his sleepy little frame tucked up soundly in bed with the Harry Potter bedsheets pulled tight around and Harry himself perched on the shelf above looking down on him! Sleep well SoulfulSam, sleep well.

* We have had extra patches made for those that wish to have them at £5 each, available at the next night or by post. Interested? Drop us a line at nh6tsmafia@aol.com

So, once again, if you are travelling distance to be with us on this unique night (unique in the respect that its an anniversary in September that doesnt mention the word Wigan or Casino!) make sure you either get a ticket from the box office at £8 (01462-672003) or from me (01462-731543 or email at nh6tsmafia@aol.com) otherwise you are running the risk of having to do a Martha - namely dancing in the streets. See you there Friday with the other 400+ for the usual debauchery and fun and games. TheBigO

Soul Generation A site that makes you ......

... smile! Check out this site, being a bit "jaded" recently with northern web sites on the internet it was a pleasure ....nah not a pleasure but a f****** joy to come across this one. SOUL GENERATION is the name, and while not coming from a 100% northern (as in music style) angle, it is to me one of the best have visited in a long while. Have been meaning to mention it for weeks, but it was that good wanted to add some words just to praise site rather than a quick mention. Check out the features, well written, informative, thought provoking and enjoyable, the KFC one and Nina Simone being highlights Top Tens, events and more sections all look good read good and undoubtely do you good The Excavations section to me fits in better with what I consider Northern is about. The constant search for decent quality 45s by soul fans, not afraid to pass on tips, no big wallet required. Just plain old soul music searched and talked about by soul fans. Spreadin and building up sounds by word of mouth, passing on info and tips , and so on. Not like some who seem think its just a case of shelling out $$, sponging info on web sites from others and then passing off as own "discoveries" without any credit ot acknowledgment. Design, layout, the look, the way it works all 100% and best tribute I can give it, is if this site is half as good when finished, will be happy As stumbled across this when just have visited some of the most cheesiest sites ever, why do people think that we want more scans of tatty 70s badges, sound clips of the bloody right track, whole northern web side at times sounds and looks like a online version of Phoneix Nites. When saw this site as said, it was like a breath of fresh air. Hats off to all involved a definite "come get to this" for the "soul Fan"! and the link is VISIT SOUL GENERATION know my words are not to every ones taste so heres their own: A new online site devoted to crate digging, deepfunk, northern soul from deep to northern stompers, mod jazz, soul food cookery, art, hip hop and whatever else we are feelin. This is my interpretation of soul - anything goes so long as it has that special something that moves you. Inside you will find the soul kitchen filled with recipes from the deep south and beyond, interviews with recording artists and illustrators/artists, excavations from the crates, top tens, audio clips, club listings and lots more.

Twisted Wheel Remix 2003 Video

A record that may be classed as one of those many off the wall Northern misfits, has been given the 2003 treatment. The record which (so they say) got plays at the Wheel was Rubberneckin by Elvis Presley. It also got one (at least) spin by Dave Evison at Wigan Casino, after the effect it had on floor he said something like "well we used to dance to it at wheel" ( so says my memory)
Dug out a video link to hear/see what it sounds like and in my view....
broadband dial-up
its not bad in a 2003 mainstream popular style, not as good as that other remix imo, but defintly better than all the pop idol stuff.
(Anyone seen the itv advert for pop idol which rips off Corporate soul theme song).
And video is well done and worth a watch
trivia wise :
Mentioned when posted it up in forum another Northern link, Well points were on offer if you said that it featured in Elvis film "Change of habit" which also featured Barabara McNair as one of the nuns, didnt she also appear in Playboy later on, sure got a grainy scan somewhere
Theres also another Elvis track which has had plays, 5 points for the title?
(as with all trivia stuff, to go and actually check if details are correct takes the fun out of it for me, if feel wrong feel free to pass on, if have thumbed thru 99 mags, 3 databases, 6 websites, again feel free to pass on but ask if it was worth it:) )
Endbit:
Someone once stated that the trouble with 45s by artists such as Elvis, P J Proby, Tom Jones is that their voices were so instantly regonisable, that even if they had recorded the worlds best cover version of the worlds best soul track, it would still get slagged down. Yet a mediocre weak white 60s uk cover by some pure junior showtime artist would still be considered more credible by some. Anyone pass on whys that?

Scenesville Next Saturday Details

Nick B asked us to pass on details of this Saturdays Scenesville, so here you go just hit that pesky read more thing (Check out the great review of last one) read review of last scenesville Hi all, Just grabbing a few moments away from the bus to mention a special one-off Scenesville all-guest sooper dooper spectacular next Saturday (thats right, SATURDAY, unusually for us) at the Phoenix. In the tradition of Scenesville special events, well be trying to make it something you were glad you were there for, and with any luck you wont have to gnash your teeth with envy afterwards when everyone starts telling you what a great night they had once the beer had taken hold, cos youll be there anyway, supping that London shandy half after half after half in a desperate effort to keep pace with the best of em! Leading the charge will be Louth legend ROB THOMAS, the only DJ ever to manage three guest appearances at Scenesville. The fact that hes giving us another try is either rampant optimism or just plain pity. Either way, we dont care, cause if what hes played before is anything to go by hell be taking the roof off, and thats fine by us. Next up is Norwich collecting ace ANDY GILL. Anyone whose DJ box contains the original studio acetates of the Ringleaders "All Of My Life" and "Win You Over" is worth putting on just for that. When he backs it up with stuff like Johnny Summers, The Poets and all the other shite-hot stuff he plays at the Backbeat club, we want him on, simple as that. Then theres STUART TYLER. A box of impeccable sounds, the taste to choose the ones thatll slay you and a head befuddled with Spitfire are always qualities which we like in a guest, but Stuart will most likely be going on earlier in the evening, so youll probably only get the benefit of two of these qualities. Make up your own minds which two on the night. Dawn&me will be bringing up the rear and, as usual, fighting over who gets to play the Dolls - probably itll be both of us again, which is actually good news, when you think about it. Full blurb below. Scenesville. It could get messy. Nick. ************************ Details: NEXT SCENESVILLE! SATURDAY 30th August 2003 9pm-3am THE PHOENIX Cavendish Square, London W1 (Behind BHS Oxford Street, 1 min. walk Oxford Circus tube) Super Summertime Saturday Scenesville Soul Special! with all-guest line-up of ROB THOMAS, ANDY GILL and STUART TYLER with support from Scenesville stalwarts DAWN BROWN and NICK BROWN £6 members, £7 non-members Full info at www.scenesville.com

2 weeks to go to Plinston 1st Anniversary Bash!

Afternoon all and time for a shameless plug for our forthcoming event (At least Im honest) at North Herts No 1 Rare Soul club - The Plinston Hall, Letchworth. Read more for very important news!
Ive had a couple of mails asking if they can turn up on the night travelling from Manchester and I said yes they can but chances are they wont get in as we expect this to be a sell-out, much along the lines of the opening night last year.
Sooooooooo, PLEASE, if you are travelling to the event either reserve your tickets at the box office (01462-672003) or drop me (TheBigO) a line at nh6tsmafia@aol.com and we will hold them with the Sinister Sisters on the door.
As the lovely Kay Seabrook is on the door on the night wed suggest you heed our words as she may want to kill you if you travel distance without a ticket and then have a moan that you cant get in.......
Weve confirmed Mick H and Terry Jones for the Nov 14th event and the Godlike Butch for our Jan event so make notes in your diaries. Ill be posting the latest Trading Cards and flyers over the weekend and a list of some of the tip top toons weve spun at the venue in all 3 rooms.

TheBigO * Dave Flynn has agreed NOT to be spinning his rare A-Ha acetates on the night for those that have been concerned after reading his Trading Card!

Standing in the Shadows of Motown - Film Review

"Standing in the Shadows of Motown" is one of those documentaries that make you appreciate someone you may never even knew existed.

In this case, it's The Funk Brothers, the 14 studio and concert musicians responsible for the "Motown sound" that distinguished that genre of music from all others in the 1960s.

THE MUSIC

Early on in ''Standing in the Shadows of Motown,'' the drummer Steve Jordan makes what seems, on its face, like an outrageous assertion about the music that emerged from the ''Hitsville, U.S.A.'' factory from 1959 to 1971. ''You could have had Deputy Dawg singing on some of this stuff and had a hit,'' he says. ''Because the tracks were just so incredible. They were musical entities unto themselves.''

I question whether "Respect" would have sounded anywhere near as great without Aretha Franklin's attitude. That said, what this film does so cleverly is to open your ears to music in a way that few musical documentaries have attempted., let alone succeeded in doing. More than an overdue celebration of the Funk Brothers, it's a revelatory aural journey that gets you to hear something you've always known without quite realizing it: that the magic of the Motown sound was, quite literally, a sound which the Funk Brothers created.

In one marvellous sequence, a half dozen of these supremely relaxed men, all in their 60s and 70s, sit down to play ''Ain't Too Proud to Beg,'' adding the instruments one by one. Uriel Jones lays down the bursting yet paradoxically delicate drumbeat, and when Bob Babbitt comes in with his walking bass, the song already sounds larger than its parts. Eddie Willis' staccato, off-the-beat guitar strums - pause, plank! pause, plank! - add color in the form of rhythm, and by the time they've been topped by the exultant spangle of Jack Ashford's tambourine, you realize why, in a sense, any singer could have succeeded atop this sublime chassis.

More than just great musicians, the Funk Brothers treated each and every instrument as a voice, blending them to create a unique sense of space - not a wall of sound but a harmonic globe of sound.

INTERVIEWS

Sadly, a few of The Funk Brothers have now passed away including:
- James Jamerson, considered to be a bass player of exceptional originality ("He put music to everything that had life"), went to Los Angeles when the company moved, but couldn't fit into the West Coast jive and started drinking.
- Benny "Papa Zita" Benjamin brought the backbeat to the early Motown hits. He was a drummer from Alabama, who overdosed on drugs.
- Earl Van Dyke played what they called "guerrilla piano" and became a huge influence to the sound on such classics as For Once In My Life and My Guy. In his later years, he taught music in the Detroit state schools.

However, ''Standing in the Shadows of Motown'' offers terrific interviews with the surviving Funk Brothers, who provide a tasty insider history of 4 a.m. recording sessions inside ''the snake pit'' (as the fabled Studio A was known) as well as a chilling description of their final kiss-off from Berry Gordy, the Motown mogul who treated them like indentured servants.

The interviews are woven around a reunion concert given in Detroit in 2000, with assorted contemporary singers filling in for the Motown greats. (The showstopping highlight: Joan Osborne doing ''What Becomes of the Broken Hearted.'')

The most fascinating anecdotes revolve around the man who was, by universal assent, the genius of the group -- the late bassist James Jamerson, who caressed his low notes into an angel's ostinato, so that he seemed to be wandering through, and creating, every dimension of a song. No studio musician ever cast a greater shadow.

THEN AND NOW

The Funk Brothers were underappreciated at the time, and they knew it, but they loved playing together. Now, decades later, they seem to enjoy swapping stories and sharing memories, quietly revelling in the idea that someone is finally giving them their due. It is always inspiring to see hard work rewarded, but especially when the workers haven't sought the spotlight.

The Funk Brothers were reunited for a concert a couple years ago, and footage of it is interspersed with interviews in this unfailingly upbeat documentary.

The film's finale covers the opening of this commemorative concert in Detroit, when The Funk Brothers take their places on stage, carrying life-size photographs of the faces of Jamerson and Benjamin and the others who "are here in spirit.". As they begin to play and Joan Osborne walks out to sing the first number, you know you are in the presence of greatness.

The purpose of the film is to celebrate the music as much as to tell the story behind it, and fans of all types of popular music will find it irreplaceable.

This will be a very busy room, bring a towel, some talc and your best dancing shoes and be prepared to dance.
