Having missed the last couple of events at Culcheth it was great to be back!

We arrived early doors to catch Baz M's early spot, a nice mix of lesser played gems Dave Hamilton's "Pisces Pace" sounded awesome!! and WHAT was the Funky Gospel dancer you finished with?? Deffo on the wants list!!

Team Ukrainian's Simon Ingham was quality all the way Henry Moore "you really grab me" Bobby Rich "there's a girl somewhere" and many more, top drawer mate!

Gorton's finest Robbo was making a welcome return a real mixed bag everything from Kelly Brothers "crying days are over" to Beloyd ,Joe Matthews "ain't nothing" and everything in between!!

That man Soul Sam was headlining and didn't disappoint, Willie Dale, Joseph Webster, Zodiacs "hey rough nut" and rounding off with all the biggies from the latter days of The Casino "Mr Soul" John + The Weirdest, Jimmy Bo Horne "I just can't speak" was the icing on the cake!!

Kev Murphy rounded off a great night Don Varner "Mo Jo Hannah" Del Tours "sweet and lovely" Charles Mintz "running back" were the stand outs for me!!

All in all a great night and bonus the M60 shenanigans had calmed down for the journey home!!

While Mick Howard did such a great review of the main room on Saturday, here's one for the Culcheth Modern Room - Saturday 7th September 2024

Resident DJ's - Steve Plumb, Bill Wildman & Barry Maleedy

Guest - Soul Sam

The monthly 'do within a do' aka The Culcheth Modern Room has been building momentum for quite a while now and Saturday night saw this momentum build into an absolutely cracking night. Soul Sam, who is thankfully back up and running after his health problems earlier in the year, was the Guest DJ, ably assisted by three of the regular Modern Room team, which saw a good crowd 'early doors' for the regular first spot of brand new/forthcoming releases.

As our intrepid champion of 'new vinyl releases' Pete Ratcliffe was away this month, the first spot was covered by Steve Plumb, using Pete's choices of killer forthcoming releases from Kent, New Broad St, Soul Direction, Soul Junction, Izipho, Super Disco Edits and newcomer Riker Records. Quite a crowd were in early with plenty of folks (including Soul Sam) bobbing up to the decks to enquire about many of the tracks. Please check the playlist which has been posted by Pete as there are some future winners here for sure.

Steve Plumb followed and did his own 'official' set and continued in a similar vein with a host of 'forthcoming/cd/download only' tracks from artists such as Good and Plenty, Drake Frye, The Modulations, Isaiah Sharkey (Plumbob edit), Cameron Foster (a nod to Mr Lucas) etc which got plenty of interest from the knowledgeable crowd and finally the MNDA 45 from MT Jones which went down a storm. Props to Creative Soul for a brilliant 45 for a seriously worthwhile cause.

With all this fervent activity early on, the crowd were eagerly awaiting the return of Soul Sam, doing an early set in the Modern Room so that he could get on down to the Northern Room for another set later on. In true Sam style he absolutely rammed the floor from the very first spin, the mighty fine version of 'I'll be around' by Lee Fields & Sharon Jones. The hour shot by with proper 'Sam' classics (Flourescent Smogg, Mark IV etc), a recent spin from Rocky Valentine, then a nod back to the halcyon days of Modern Soul at Wigan Casino with spins from Top Cat (Larry Houston) and Lee Moore and the Resourceful Ones (Ike Strong). Then it was all over and off he went to weave his magic in the Culcheth Northern Room, leaving Bill Wildman behind on the wheels of steel. Bill did a fine hour of Modern Soul dance music from the 80's & 90's with classic tunes from Sherrick, Tower of Power, The Controllers etc keeping the dance floor ticking over nicely.

Steve Plumb came back on for a second set (well, third but who's counting) with some contemporary killers from Chuckii Booker, Solo etc followed by a brief dip into Crossover territory with Glenn Miller & Willie Tee. The Culcheth faithful really were 'having so much fun' 🙂

Finally, up stepped Mr Culcheth himself Barry Maleedy to finish off the night in style with some fine Soulful dance music mixed to perfection in the shape of Shazz, Omar feat Angie Stone, MAW feat India, Mr K's Luther edit etc as Bobby Womack brought the curtain down on a killer night in the Culcheth Modern Room.

Thanks to everyone who supported us, let's do it all again on Saturday 5th October.
