as a regular visitor to wigan , yate and many allnighters/alldayers in the 70s/80s i dont really recall seeing a mod/ lambretta/vespa in all the venues i ever went to maybe its because i was so far off my head i never really noticed .

but over the last couple of years have been to a see a few paul weller/jam tributes bands and there seems to be a massive link now with mods and northern , in the intervals when the bands not playin the djs playin basic northern tunes and there seems to be a lot of plastic soulies. dont get me wrong i was a novice on the scene once and not being a snob but just cant recall a link in the 70s/80s. whats your view

yeh it did take back off big style after quadrophenia, tryin to work out what year the film came out now, and lots of parkas at wigan think i must have been well out of it

I was a mod in the 80's thats what got me in to northern...

I also had a mate that rode a 50cc scooter up from teh new forest to go to Wigan... 30mph top speed

ive got about 4 mates who use to attend wigan who are now late 40s and they all own proper nice lambys and go on scooter runs,tried to get into it but felt it wasnt for me

You'd have to go back further than the 70s to see the original link of course.....the 60s mod scene quite obviously played a part in the way the Northern scene originally started.

The '79, and subsequent revivals during the Britpop periods etc were always going to result in Mods exploring the 6Ts soul scene, it was as much a part of their scenes history as it is of yours.

Didn't the 100 Club start as a 6Ts Rhythm & Soul club that was heavilly populated by mods?

I also recall Dave Evison once telling me he got nicked once for syphoning petrol for his scooter, in fact I had to haul my Vespa Sportique onto a stage at the venue for his 50th Birthday party to dress the stage with posters of Wigan & the Torch etc.

i think the link is bigger now than its ever been on the scene, pub by me on a thursday outside is rammed with scooters inside they are playin northern and 60s ,id say a large % are well into it, which at the end of the day is a good thing for the scene as its bringing new blood into northern

I think you will find that the real Mods were buying all the best music at the stafford period off the main boys and introducing these tunes on to the Mod Scene.

All the best mid tempo bits and the RnB goodies were played on the Mod scene in the 80s and 90s

Along with great latin and top Ska !

It would take 20 pages and a 1000 posts to even touch on that subject and you'd be none the wiser and very bored with it all

Birmingham has always had a very healthy Mod scene though, probably much more healthy than the Northern scene in Brum.

yeh as i said my old allnighter mates are all scooter mad and have had northern blood for 30 years or more, im not down crying the mod scene, just think i never seen it in the 70s at wigan and other places and it proberbly did re surface after the quadrophenia film

Soulie, Mod, Scooterist....

There's one common thread. 60's soul and R&B !

As an old (revivalist) mod from the early 80's I was exposed to Northern Soul through that.

The scene was a mixture of different 'cults' but everyone went to do's with one thing in mind. To have a good time and hear the music which was always on the whole in a strong 60's soul & R&B vien.

It brought the masses together.

(And it did seem like masses too compared to some do's I go to nowdays !)

Always remember an Essex mod legend, Del Reeves, (some may remember him as part of the D.J. duo Chad and Del playing in London and Essex back in the early 80's?) telling me as a young mod sprog,

"It don't matter if you can't afford the best clothes. It's the music that matters!"

I took that onboard and still believe that today. It really don't matter if your a soulie, mod or whatever. There's a certain snobbery between all different groups. Always will be. But...."It's what's in the groove's that count!"

That should be the basis of building our scene up rather than dividing us and putting barriers up and saying this group's better than that group etc.

As you say Mace, the 6TS (and Kent records) early years benefited from the Mod revival. There was a bunch of mods called the Glory Boys who came down the first night, they were a bit of a pain and never came again, but more enlightened mods who'd just discovered the scene and were eager for more came along to West Hampstead (Eddie's mates Chad & Del, Vaughan Toulouse, Kev Collins, The Small Hours and Seventeen groups) and the early 100 Club evening dos until we went a lot more Northern with the all nighters. From then on they either got converted to Northern or just dipped in and out as the mood took 'em. With the interest in R&B coming back a lot more visit regularly, depending on who the DJs are and some like Andy BB and Dunc and Steph stayed mod but preferred Northern. And of course the Crossfire dos are the perfect mod/Northern amalgam where people like a bit of both (and sometimes the other) can go into whichever room they prefer and meet up with their muckers at the bar. Oh yeah and the two geezers who started the 6TS were mods originally anyway. (and we've got the listed Geoff coming down for a dance nowadays 46 years since he started at The Scene club!)

When I was a lad I did an English oral exam and nicked a phrase from Blues and Soul.

"Dancing descendents of the mods", and I have always felt that to be true.

Blimey Dom me and Dom were really good mates early 80's he first started djing at the civic in Orpington... he used to carry a small box of 50 records on his vespa 90..

always remember him playing under my thumb - april silva.. and whenever I hear that now I think of him and the laughs we had...

We used to park in the car park that was Chipping Sodbury side of town as opposed to the Bristol side car parks. There used to be a long wall that we'd all park alongside to get the extra protection from the weather.

I remember one night giving a lad Kev Nelmes loads of grief about driving to yate in a car. All night we were on at him like - Want a drink? Oh no, you came in a car. Mike you look nackered, Kev you look like you came in a car. etc.

In the morning all the pillion passengers were after lifts home with him because it was hammering down. He quite rightly told everyone to floor cloff.

And surely a few on here remember the one massive fight with a bunch of jitters (greasers, grebos depends on what part of the country you are from). Occasionally the locals would have a go in their drunken states, but one night a big gang of jitters decided to have a crack. they must have been at a party near by and had seen all the scoots.

I spent all night going out and checking my and the rest of the scooters. It snowed that night if I remember correctly.
