Just got Beverly Ann - Hes coming home from Mauston WI . Came within 10 days and in a Jiffy bag with the usual 2 pieces of card and plastic sleeve around the record.

Postage price $3.96

Mind you he charged me $10 and the record is in crap condition compared to his description which was " Very Nice condition"

I have pretty much stopped buying off ebay for both of the above reasons, condition and shipping.

There must be some mileage in a data base of dodgy dealers/sellers on here.

I don't mind a few dollars variance from around the states as long as that's what is spent with a proper mailer included.

For me the situation revolves around the feedback on other sold items and other current offerings they have when it's an ebay item - people that always have quality stuff (thatgirl and tefteller for example) and pack it right - I don't mind paying for a proper mailer, tracking/signed for on a 300 dollar record with these people.

What pisses me off are the 'non dealers' with delusions when grading, send it in a paper bag and although it's not so much the obigatory 8 dollars or so post, cos they don't do signed for, but the fact the stupid heads put the full price on the green slip and you get another 30 dollars customs on top and you have to take time out go to the depot to pay the extra for the bloody thing!

I now tell everyone from USA what to do and what happens this week - I got tracking on a 350 dollar deal, he put a low value and used record on the slip, he had 2 sturdy pieces of card and then what? - he put it in a fkn jiffy bag!!! doh!

The plus side - an unplayed never out of packet record with the collector stamping the bag SEP 27 1966 - of course, when I saw and played the beauty I forgave him for the jiffy bag part of it all!

On the home front the UK dealers do themselves justice in the main - most people I buy from I expect 2ish quid signed for and 5-6 special as basically I don't take a chance on record value versus insurance limit.

Only one snag ever with a dealer on here - 2 records EX+ a 150 deal plus special post to cover insurance limit - actually talked to him re nick and was assured ok. Records were VG at best when they arrived.

Will never buy from him again.

Moral of all this - it actually doesn't take much for the seller to please the customer, but one wrong thing to piss off the buyer forever.

When I ship a 45 to the UK, it's generally from $4.75 to $5.50 postage.

That includes 2 pieces of cardboard and a cardboard mailer.

Postage was cheap because the Seller charged for First Class Mail Large Envelope with 4 +, but less than 5, ounces of weight.

Anyone using a standard US cruciform cardboard mailer with pads would have to use First Class Mail International Package. Depending on the era of the record, and thus the weight, most of these packages will be 5 to 6 ounces including the mailer and pads. Postage-only for 5 ounces on the nose would be $4.60 and 6 ounces would be $5.39.

I charge $1.50 for mailer and pads, my actual cost, and charge $6.50 for S&H. If postage plus the $1.50 is less than $6.50 I send a refund for the difference. If its more, I eat it.

You can calculate what postage is going to be from and to somewhere if you are pretty close to the weight of the package. Usually, a single 45 packaged in a Bags Unlimited box with fillers will weigh about 5oz and cost $4.80 from where I am (Atlanta) to the UK. On ebay, I charge $6 for international air mail because that accounts for more expensive shipping to Australia/Japan from here, and if it goes to UK/Europe, the slight overage will help pay for my mailers and is not grossly over the actual charge to the point where I would expect anyone to complain. For my set sale customers, I charge $5 for international postage for the first 45.

I'm guessing that most sellers have their own "system" for coming up with their postage costs, honest or dishonestly - and I would guess that challenging a seller on this wouldn't go down very well after the auction has ended. Best advise is to ask any questions of the seller before bidding ends, and avoid bidding if you aren't happy with what she or he is offering.

i don't usually mind Jiffy bags, if the record is secure between enough card inside and sellers make sure that the corrugation lines go in both directions - had one sent the other day in a corrugated card envelope with more corrugated card inside and could easily bend the package in one direction, thought it had snapped when it arrived, luckily it hadn't...

i bought one 45 from a guy off ebay this month and he wanted $30.75 postage from the us.

and he woundn't budge on the cost.

got to agree with you ,theres a lot of rose tinted glasses out there when it comes to condition...uk p&p varies just the same,from 1 to 3o4£ and half the packages been used before .unless you mention it in feedback [in words],what do the little stars count for???if you put expensivep&p does it knock the feedback rating down...???

The postage price from U.S. > U.K is the same from every American state. Prices rose just a bit recently. I mailed a few 45s today, and the weight of the packages (U.S. box, two pieces of cardboard, record sleeved and in plastic and wrapped in a sheet of newspaper) varied between 5.4 and 5.8 ounces - all other aspects being exactly the same, the difference is entirely in the weight of the records themselves. At these weights, the postage is $ 5.64. If someone eliminated all or most of the packing and shipped in cheaper cardboard, anything to get the weight below 5 ounces, then the cost to ship would fall to $ 4.80.
