looking for a comprehensive list of big screen soul films including concerts - any help would be appreciated, particularly details of those that have never had a UK release .

Just heard the City Screen City (York) will be showing the Funk Bros story 'standing in the shadows of motown' on Sat 10th Sept , during the day and early evening

Must admit i didn't realise its so difficult for an independant cinema to obtain distribution , rights etc to show a particular film .

Big thanks to all on soul-source who came up with some truely great suggestions on possible soul films . All were investigated by the City Screen and they could only obtain rights to show 'Standing in the Shadows of Motown' or 'Dream Girls'

Gonna be a great day @City Screen with the film and then a full blown soul nite to follow 'til 2am

I remember watchin coast to coast, lenny henry was the star. The plot was a scouse soul dj meets a white american, deserter frm a US air base in oxfordshire, i think, and they travel around playin soul disco places. I seem to remember that most of the tracks played were motown & not rare, there may hav been the odd northern sound in there. Can't remember the ending as it was, for me, pretty disappointin @ the time. As was mentioned, I don't think it's available anywhere. Also, I seem 2 remember, there was rumour of a sequel bein made.

Yes, it was quite enjoyable.

As an aside, I picked up a copy of Jnr Walker- Cleos Mood on Soul, very neatly stamped " Coast to Coast",

which could be a record shop I guess,

but equally I could own a telly star

On TV back in the early eighties there was some kind of "play for today" which featured northern soul and I do recall that it had Julie Shipley in it .

It was about various people who work in the indutrial north looking forward to a weekend soul nite, it was fiction not a doc'..

Part of a 'york soul day' at the venue , The Waterfront Blues N Soul Club will then be hosting an evening event (with late bar til 2am ) Guest DJs will be Andy Lewis (Acid Jazz/Paul Wellers bass player) and euro DJ Raphi 'Scorcher' (Lava Records) from Brussels plus residents .

As much as I enjoyed Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, I thought it was a disgrace that there was no mention of one of the members of the Funk Brothers and also one of the greatest musicians of all time, Mike Terry - he was still alive at the time.
