After raiding me motown and 6ts youth club classics on saturday for a oldies night, , I was wondering where's the cut off for some of you lot? Where do you draw the line? the snake? landslide? Chairmen of the board? Band of gold, LOL. There's tune's we'd all cringe at, but, what do you think you can get away with? or again where is the cut off, as someone once said 'I'd do anything for northern but I wont play that!' Perhaps some alternative ideas on familier ( to everyone) but not so overplayed tunes might be a hoot too.

They've got off their backsides & decided to give you a bit of their time & money. Yes , they may just want to

dance to the 'same old same old'(a bit soul destroying at times) but if you've agreed to play the venue,don't knock it! Ask anyone who knows me ( if you find someone who'll admit it !) I'm out every weekend, and try and fit in as many different venues as possible. I've travelled to a few places that still send a chill up my spine,and JOE 90 WAS played, and had a bloody good night but wouldn't go back again ! My mind set is you've made the effort, you may as well enjoy it for what it is ! No point whingeing, no point running the promoters down, dont like it, dont go back !!

Now from a dj's point of view( and I use that term very loosely in my case!) it seems my biggest problem is that I

was too young for "DA CASINO ", therefore I know nothing & should never be let loose behind the decks again! And yes, people have actually said that to my chest ( I know , it should be face, but I'm a lot taller than most of 'em ).

I tend to steer clear of the most played out tunes,unless requested ,as usually they'll get played at some point during the night. My 'soul life' began with the Stafford TOTW, constantly tryin' to keep up with the latest discs,where All tempos were played,from early RnB through to the latest modern release & all price ranges. I remember seeing the dancefloor half empty as the jock was trying to 'break' his latest find. My point being,and its NOT a dig at ANYONE,is that playing 'to death' stuff is SAFE ! A full dance floor equates to a great Dj ? Doesnt do it for me. 'Each to their own' still sums up this great scene of ours. But miss the days when you heard something different,each and every time you went out !

When asked a few weeks back if I had any 'proper Wigan oldies' instead of the "60's newies"I was playing,(Sam Dees, Deadbeats ?) I slapped on Ray Merrell, Dave Charles & the like, good solid oldies, I was promptly told that no one played "that sort of rubbish" at Wigan, "Aint ya got Skiing in the snow or The Joker",when I replied,very politely in the negative, and that I had never owned either,the look he gave me was fantastic !

Someone earlier in this thread said something like " Mix the set up with 2 or 3 underplayed/semi-known tunes"!

Totally with you on that one,I do it all the time with no worry about a half empty/sparse/deserted dance floor, as in theory ALL the classics were played 1st,somewhere, and perhaps a lot of 'em to a 'sparse ' dance floor !

I'm gonna have to stop replying to these threads on a Sunday, bleedin' 'ell, don't I ramble!!
