I know why Pete posts the sort of thing he does.....because the scene does come across as snobbish at times, particularly from within. Some of the records mentioned in his thread have nothing to do with northern, but over the years have been force fed to the N/S community IMO because of their rarity. I don't agree with him about all his choices, but surely most can see where he' s coming from.

I asked in a recent thread why, when inducting new people into the soul scene we invariably play them something up tempo, and considered an oldie. Never got a reply (as far as I can remember) but would you really play someone new "The feeling is real" to explain northern? I think the only thing Pete ever does is stand his corner, and promote his choice/style of northern, and personally I don't see anything wrong with that.

Dotty and Milly on the other hand (personal dislike) in my view doesn't. One experience that i had re this was when a couple of major collectors spun "pounds" on the turntable one night where they were guesting, the venue was full but the dance floor empty, individuals were going up to make requests that were never played and the dj's sneered at them as if to say "we aint gonna play that shite" and just carried on spinning the rarest of the rare to an empty floor... the venue suffered badly after that... personally I am a retro girl and like my northern that way, what peeves me though is a venue that advertises northern and plays arm swinging modern and related commercial motown... and woe betide you if you ask for any northern to be played ...

Yes there were rarities in the 70Ts, but essentially they were also records that stood up on their own merits. Course there were a lot more records to discover at that time, which would logically mean the quality wouldn't have to drop. Nowadays.....well, maybe that's not the case. Just a thought

i recently answered a 'what record sums up northern for you' thread with 'i'm coming home' but this is a very theoretical 'if i ruled the world' type question and if i really HAD to come up with just one record to sum up northern i couldn't do it.

never mind one record to sum up northern, i couldn't even come up with one record to sum up my own experience of northern, or my memories of the scene.

equally, if asked to introduce someone new to northern (which i'm always trying to do anyway as probably most of us are in our own way) i wouldn't play just ONE record, be it george pepp or any other.

The thread I was referring to was a couple of weeks ago I think. And it asked what one record would you play to someone just coming into the N/S scene to explain it. Personally I agree with you, no one record can describe N/S adequately, because it has so many flavours. But people did try to answer it, and the one very noticable thing was that the vast majority of answers were what would be considered, played out oldies. I found it interesting considering the amount of oldies/newies/rare/not so rare debates on here. What it seemed to say to me was, that the older records were what N/S was really about. Granted there has to be new additions to playlists to keep the scene fresh, but the only one that got a mention (as I can remember) in the playing it to a newcomer was mello souls. Personally I think Mello souls would have graced any era and is a traditional sounding northern record, so no great change from playing a newcomer an oldie

I know what you are saying Mike, but I think the way that I read winnies post and replied was that sometimes the odd few forget about the dance floor and have little competitions between themselves when behind the decks with the rarest of the rare stuff, dont get me wrong sounds have to break somewhere and somehow, but are done in such a way, as I am sure you know, not to cause over kill in its initial first few plays. But if you want it to "sound a bit different" or "stand out" from the others then dont play the stuff all night long.

Well known for beyond its time sounds, as you know was the pier at Cleethorpes they had a great reputation for breaking new stuff on the scene at the time but they also played the good old tried and previously tested sounds.
