As a keen Northern Soul follower and also a well regarded photographer ( mostly landscapes ) I often find myself taking phptpgrpahs of northern soul events. I recently went to Bury Town Hall and a great night was enjoyed by most. I was taking snaps throughout the night and also informed the guys on the door and some dj's that I would be doing so and that they would be more then welcome to use my pictures as promo shots if they so wished. A couple of people complained as I was taking photographs, one gentleman asked me to wipe his photograph which I did no problem I always respect the wishes of individuals. Another lady asked me to remove her photograph and any shots of the dance floor in which she may have appeared, also she stated to me that I was breaking the law by taking photographs of people. I always make it clear to the door staff that I will be taking photographs and so long as they have no problem I will snap waay. I take no suggestive shots or shots of peopole in compromising positions. I have always beleived it is ok to do this in a place where it would be comonly acceptable and regarded as the norm. Please let me know if I am against current legislation and I will pack in, however this will concur that all other non specific photographs from events posted on here and the internet in general without signed model release forms will also need to be removed and deleted. Any thoughts much appreciated.

In fact Bill I think you took a couple of shots of Jane dancing at Bury and she would love a copy of it which she would pay you .The photos people have taken at venues over the past 40 years are part of the social history of the Northern Soul Scene

and are in my opinion a very important part of the history of the UK for future generations

Regards Ian Cunliffe

As Ian has rightly said photo's are a very important part of the social history of the soul scene. Taking photos at a soul venue is more acceptable today than ever before,as long as respect for the subject is taken into consideration. The earliest photos I know to be taken where taken in The Wheel on Whitworth St from 69/71 by my gud friend Norman Rogers from Cambridge. Now that was at a time if you pulled a camera out, without any one knowing who you where, or why you where in a soul all niter with a camera you would have been out on the street before you got knocked out less your camera. Norman also snapped pics in Saints & Sinners Brum & Bletso, North Hants. Many of Normans picture's have found there way into books and videos clips on YouTube. Thanks to the internet not many ever asked Normans permission once they got into the public domain. Not that he would ever take a penny. Its just nice to be asked. So many thanks to him and others

who have had permission to snap away for the pleasure of all and as record of a little piece of Northern Soul history because that and memories is probably all we will have left to pass on of days gone by.

well this is a big thread, I haven't been on here for a while but thought I'd have a nosey and am amazed at the number of comments. I love the work of messers Cooper, Leedham and Johnston. I will continue to take pics at the nights I attend I hope to capture the scene in a positive light, showing the true size and emotion of our Northern Soul world. I will do my upmost to gain the permission of all individuals taken as subject matter and if you don't want your photo taken please just tell me, we're all mean't to be on the scene for the same reason, which is why my camera is generally sweat stained. I am a big soul fan and can be found on the floor at ever doo I attend. Looking forward to trying to capture the essence of Northern Soul in 2012 at the next Stoke allnighter. Hope to see ya all there. KTF
