Don't mean to hijack the current thread on discs that make you smile, but so many mentioned great pop songs; so I thought it might make an interesting topic.

What's your fave non soul 60's record? Or some of your faves? And why?

I've got so many, but here are three that always give me a tingle:

1. Alone again or - Love

Just astonishing in every respect; the words, the chords, the awesome instrumental break, brilliant guitars throughout.

2. Classical Gas - Mason Williams

Bit obvious this one, since the beat so so close to classic Northern; what a stunning arrangement, and to get that massive orchestra playing with such verve and energy! Inspired Mike Post more than a tad I think

3. Rock n Roll Woman - Buffalo Springfield

Discovered this on an old Atlantic sampler (Flying High) around 1971. I'd bought it for the soul tracks, but there were a couple of rock/pop thing on there too, including this high energy rocker. Dark, dark vocals from Steve Stills (?)Awesome guitar and Hammond organ. I'm amazed this hasn't been covered to death by indie bands.

Aw, that's just three, but there are so many more. Everything the Fab Four did for a start!

I wonder if the Beach Boys, know they are so revered in Northern Soul circles?

I saw Brian Wilson at a benefit do for one of the Zombies in House/Home? Of The Blues in LA this Jan and at one stage I was dancing Northern to I think 'Help Me Rhonda'. I know it worked perfectly (in my head) and I was considering it for the Xmas party. Mind, I was also grooving to We Built This City On Rock & Roll by Jefferson Starship; the second guiltiest pleasure known to man.

Anything by The Righteous Brothers , big vocals and productions to match. Surely the best non black male duo ever anyway.

You're forgetting the Chuckle Brothers.

The b & w video of You've Lost That Loving Feeling, I think it's off a US telly show is one of the most spine tingling ever.

The Beach Boys are the next best thing to N.Soul. Not in MHO but Fact!

Sorry all those US groups knew who the Daddies were and they had long-hair and came from Liverpool. Brian Wilson nearly retired after each new Beatles record. Everyone was permanently shocked at the new levels they kept hitting.

Wasn't comparing them. However, Sgt Peppers was made in response to Pet Sounds.

And then I agree, after Sgt P, BW went to bed for 6 years and was never the same again!!

Bobby Darin - 18 Yellow Roses

Frankie Laine - Don't Make My Baby Blue (Goffin & King)

Gene McDaniels - Anyone Else - Pure Cheese & Great!

Spanky & Our Gang - Sunday Will Never Be The Same

Robert John - If You Don't Want My Love

Delaney Bramlett - Liverpool Lou

Connie Francis - No Better Off - Bert Keyes!!

Chris Montez - Call Me

Adam Wade - Rain From The Skies

Bruce Channel - Hey Baby!

++++The Killer - Jerry Lee Lewis - Another Place Another Time - Must be played after a skinfull

Some killer suggestions on here. Got me thinking about a pop CDR compliation for the car. Or, is there enough mileage in this for a CD swap? It's just great to know so many people share the same taste. Even the Paper Dolls makes me smile! Thoughts anyone?

Slimharpo - I'd forgotten that Robert John track; lovely song.

About 15 years ago when I was in the Navy, i used to try to be the first in the mess to put on a tape to inflict my taste of music on everyone else. Usually to shouts of "not more soul crap" or words to that effect. Eventually I made a tape of "Northern" tracks by Paul Anka, Helen Shapiro, Shane Martin, Dean Parish, Bobby Paris etc. There was still no pleasing some people, they still maoned.

Talking of the Beachboys I think the intro to "Darlin'" is awsome, but the song doesn't live up to it.

BEST POP SONG FROM THE 60'S HAS TO BE CHROCHETED DOUGHNUT RING GET OUT YOUR ROCK AND ROLL SHOES ON DERAM, IT'S LIKE THE SMALL FACES ON SPEED. ALSO FIRE MY FATHERS NAME WAS DAD ON DECCA. PURE CLASS

Sounds a good idea Colin. Be a change to do something different. Such a wide range of music to choose from. As long as we don't extract the urine from each other's choices. I'm sure my taste may be regarded as idiosyncratic. Is anyone interested in a 60s pop CD swap? And I use pop in its widest sense but excluding anything that could be regarded as soul or rhythm and blues or akin to it. No pop stompers!!
