I love loads of Johnny's work even though he hated being called a soul singer and always insisted he only ever wanted to cut blues songs.

You are correct, it's totally a blues thing, but it is a great record. I posted this up cause I bought it last week for nothing, three quid

It's a collectors thing, it will never be a massive 45

But respect to a great old 45

I have enjoyed listening to this 45 this week

Killer Tune!!!

Johnny made a number of great deep soul tracks, his voice was perfect for genre ..... BUT ... he still insisted that they were all blues numbers. 

Whatever HE wanted to call em, I'm very glad he made em & I'll still think of them as being fine deep soul cuts.

Have had a copy of his superb, "Coming To See About You" on Jetstream/Suave for many a year...fabulous laid back tune with tinkling piano work and steady horn section complimenting Johnny's cool vocal...recommended.

There's a screaming female version with different lyrics on the same label. 

 

Jannie Williams - I've Been True - Golden Eagle 103

 

I enjoy both versions but the Jannie Williams version carries a little extra oomph in her delivery.

And for those that are happy to hear as much music as they can but don't worrying about missing crackles and pops, one of Kents finest releases in recent times, which is really saying something given recent output, is available cheaper than any of his 45's, and works far better in the car system. Its on repeat at the moment,

"its me" was on one of the 80s Kent LPs I bought back then, I can't remember which one, but I always liked the track and his superb vocal.

it was on Wand records if I remember

great voice been playing this and the feamale version for a few years now off and on... love it

 

and just got the 'coming to see about you' too..first played early doors Saturday but will be getting lots more plays from me

Used to include Johnny Copeland One More time in ealry door playlists at the Attic nights, very strong record still enjoying home spins, BUT didn't know The Jannie Williams, will have to look out for one of those, good post, thanks.

"Ghetto Child" is such a fantastic downtrodden tune. I've always thought it's a bit slept on by soul collectors.
