3 New Soul Auction 45s: Pookie Hudson, Volcanos, Dan Penn

Last week, we added three new 45s to our Louise Neal 45 Soul Auctions page, which features eye-popping, previously unplayed promo treasures from the Louise Neal Soul 45 collection. See the Auctions page for photos.

• Pookie Hudson, Jamie 1319 (promo), 1966. "This Gets To Me / All The Places I've Been" Condition: M- (M-|M-|M) This terrific Motown-style dancer rates highly among Northern Soul collectors, as reflected in its position at #408 on Kev Roberts' Top Northern Soul 45s list. This new, unplayed promo for the 1966 pressing has very light storage wear, lowering the Label and Vinyl grades to Near Mint. After a deep cleaning, the audio, I'm pleased to say, sounds as Mint as the day it was born! MB $400. High Bid: $500 | Auction ends midnight EST Monday, August 31.
• Volcanos, Arctic 125 (promo), 1966. "A Lady's Man" Condition: M- (M|M-|M) This new, unplayed one-sided promo has a cool etched pattern on the blank flip, reminiscent of laser etchings of the 1980s. This is a dynamite Northern Soul dancer with audio that is so clean and hot you will simply have to run to get to the dance floor first! :-) I'm also grading the labels Mint because there really aren't any noteworthy flaws. The vinyl exhibits very slight storage wear, grading Near Mint. MB $40. High Bid: $50 | Auction ends midnight EST Monday, August 31.
• Dan Penn, Fame 6402 (promo), 1964. "Let Them Talk / Close To Me" Condition: M- (M-(x)|M|M) Dan Penn, writer or co-writer and producer of so many classic Deep and Funky Soul tunes, lets loose solo-style on this very early Fame release. The A side is a catchy mid-tempo Northern Soul style number, while the flip is a fine Deep Soul ballad. Penn has a surprisingly good voice, reminding me of B.J. Thomas, and the totally clean audio on both sides of this pristine styrene pressing is a real treat! This new, unplayed promo 45 is pristine Mint except for a red star stamped on the A side label and some very light storage wear on the bright white labels (see picture). MB $125.

• Sons of Moses, Coral 62549 (promo), 1968. "Soul Symphony / Fatback" Condition: M- (M- (x)|M|M) This rare and wonderful single, originally pressed on Soft 1021, is listed at #357 in Kev Roberts' book. Comes in an crisp Coral Records factory sleeve. The record is pristine Mint except for the "x" inked on the A side label (see picture). MB $50
• Florence Devore, Phi-Dan 5000 (promo), 1965. "Kiss Me Now (Don't Kiss Me Later) / We're Not Old Enough" Condition: M- (M-|M-|M-) This is a new, unplayed promo copy on the multicolor Phi-Dan label design. This rare but popular single sits at #561 in Kev Roberts' Best Northern Soul 45s list! Aside from very faint surface noise audible only at the beginning, this copy has gorgeous Mint audio. The labels and vinyl grade Near Mint to reflect some very faint storage wear. MB $100.
• Joe Tex, Dial 3016 (promo), 1963. "I Wanna Be Free / Blood's Thicker Than Water" M- (M-|M-|M) After a deep cleaning, this single has pristine Mint audio! The labels and vinyl have very slight storage wear, grading Near Mint. This rare but popular single sits at #14 in Kev Roberts' "New Top 100" Northern Soul 45s List! MB $200.

Louise Neal was a black female disk jockey from North Carolina who had a 3-hour Soul/RnB/Blues show from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s. During that time, she collected thousands of (mostly) promo 45s at her home from the many record companies she was registered with for receiving promotional material--ABC, Atlantic/Atco, Chess/Checker/Cadet, Decca, Brunswick, Shout, Stax/Volt, Fame, Imperial, Jubilee, Okeh, Sue, Philles, SureFine, Vee-Jay, Kent, Duke, Bell, Paula/Ronn, Rojac, Peacock, Motown (all labels), Veep, Capitol, Modern, Dial, Jamie and many others. A large number of these precious 45s accumulated unopened in their original shipping packages after Neal left the business and moved to New York in 1967. (Also during 1963-65, when Neal had earlier left town.) Most are highly collectable and extremely rare Northern Soul singles with book values ranging well above $100... a few above $1,000! Many are pristine--unplayed and with a bare minimum of storage wear. Others may exhibit very light storage wear and/or an "x" marked on the label. A good many come in their original factory sleeve, some of which are rare and valuable on their own these days.

The collection also contains rarities and classics of interest to fans of RnB, Blues, Girl Groups, Doo Wop, and various other genres of Rock.
