Or by the Wailers....

This is how I came to discover soul music through Jamaican Rock Steady. Although, lyrically, slightly different the two bands sound so similar. The Wailers cut is so beautiful and if you start digging there are so many awesome covers from JA to USA that I never stop being blown away by the diversity of Black Music.

The Wailers knew their soul music, believe! Jamaicans listened to American radio and styled themselves around the soul groups of the day. Also the producers of the day sat next to the largest market for black music in the world and were constantly trying to break into it. Coxsone Dodd with Joe Higgs remit was to create the Jamaican version of the Impressions, The Wailers and Bob Marley favourite singer was Jerry Butler. Also Joe Higgs lyrics were styled around Curtis Mayfield who he considered a genius.
