So what makes a good DJ

is it just the tunes he plays

or is it the tunes he owns and plays

supposing he borrows a few tunes and plays them along with his own (he does not own them) is that ok ?

I expect a few hypocritical answers to this one

used to go to the alfreton dos mate.early days.....enjoyed them

good dj = dances to the records he/she owns and actually listens to the music at home. positive attitude and enthusiasm for the music is far more important than what is in the box, IMO. (that said, its nice when there is quality both in the person and in the playlist)

bad dj = arms folded behind the decks, scowl on his face, thinks everyone on the floor is a pawn to be controlled at his convienence. i dont care what you are playing, if you are a douche the response you get from me is

I know where there's a few Ken....

on scene the ability to know a good record when you here it and have the conviction to play it ,and it does not hurt to able to use the mike to get people fired up and oviously use the decks and nothing really beyond that .the people on the soul scene are there because of their love of the music so how much skill do need to get people to dance to the music they love. its not like at a wedding after the buffet theres almost a fifty year age difference between the people slidin on there knees lol. just my opinion for what its worth (nothing)

ive been to all these dos..went to annesley,awsworth.the union whem mick h first started it.went to all of these from day one...i can remember when awsworth was going when derek was there and andy and deb ran it.people were calling them for the music that they were playing.the notts scene needs a kick it really does.about 3 -4 years ago was at a do and i asked a dj to play george kirby - what can i do and he said he cant it will clear the floor its to risky...ITS TOO RISKY TO PLAY A SOUL RECORD AT A SOUL DO.

I hope to christ this doesn't sound patronising, it isn't meant in that way at all, but musical enlightenment or progression of 'the masses' on the Soul Scene is a journey, not a destination, and it takes time.

For far more people who enjoy Soul events than maybe you would like to acknowledge, it is a nostalgic experience and a way of enjoying the music of their youth with like-minded people. For maybe 80 or even 85% of the total number of people who go to Soul events regularly (say at least once a month), it doesn't matter if it's rare, 50 pence, original vinyl, CD or fookin MP3 - It's a night out with mates and music - full stop! A hell of a lot of people wouldn't even know one DJ's name from another and scarcely notice who is behind the decks at all in a lot of venues.

Much much earlier in this thread (which is 'What makes a good DJ' if I remember correctly, and not 'Why is the Notts Soul Scene not to the liking of JMYTG?') the common theme among most responses was somebody who thinks about the crowd they have been asked to entertain, maybe does a little checking up to ensure the right records are in the box, presents their set professionally and engages the crowd with enthusiasm.

Who the fook wants to play 20 or 25 records that are not to the liking of the crowd they have been booked to entertain, whilst in complete command of an empty dance floor, only to be patted on the back on their way from the stage and congratulated on being 'brave' by an angry sod like you?

It aint risky to play a Soul record at a Soul do - but it can be risky to play the WRONG Soul records to the wrong crowd. Sounds to me like you need to look up some venues that are more to your taste and allow others to enjoy their Soul however it suits them. Horses for courses my friend, and there's room for all tastes on this wonderful scene as long as intolerance doesn't get in the way.

hi,glad to see you've dropped the capitals,looked quite aggressive!!.Any way if you come to the Attic,introduce yourself and have a chat about the STATE OF SOUL in notts.I'm definatley no expert,but remember,it's only "same old" when you hear it all the time and only "rare" if you've never heard it!!!!Even the rare sounds can become too familiar.

This whole scene is about the appreciation of soul music. Be you stuck in your 1976 locked Tardis with your box of 100mph stompers and your memories or moved with the times, the scenes big enough for all of us, it just needs a bit of a shake up now and the before folks get bored, leave and never return.

The DJ's should still be able to play an odd tune now and then without fear of being slagged off after their set by the dancers who then say "WTF was that" ? If some underplayed oldies were played I am sure half the crowd I see out and about today wouldn't have a clue what it was and think it was some new discovery and still say "WTF was that"? It's not the DJ's fault he is playing to a crowd who don't know shit from clay

JMYTG wasn't slating any particular venue/promoter off in Notts with his comments, I know where he's coming from, his comments are bang on if you venture out and about in Notts.

The DJ's are booked to entertain, very often the main guest DJ (big name DJ) doesn't turn up until later, he hasn't heard anything that has been played for the first two hours. At 10 - 11 oclock he starts his set, and eh presto, he plays 4 records that have already been played, predictable records to keep the dancefloor, Ruby Andrews - Just Loving You, Sid Barnes - Standing on Solid Ground, DJ Genesis - Tribute to Betty, Frank Popp - (any title), get my drift? Not slagging these records off or picking on them, each to their own taste, but these records and a few more along the same vein are already in my 'Handbag'

Often the warm up DJ is the best of the night, playing for a pitance or nothing,and usually it's a local lad who warms up and plays some great stuff, then the predictable happens, out comes the records of the moment when the big named Guest DJ takes to the decks If I was a promoter paying these bigger named DJ's to do a spot, I would be demanding a refund, Item Not Described, just like they do on EBay

A DJ may have a full dancefloor with these more commercial well known guaranteed dance floor records, but must also ask himself, why are more than half the punters in this room sat on their arses or just tapping their feet? The foot tappers on the edge of the dancefloor are the ones itching to get on the dancefloor. Suss out the ones who are dancing, are they the local social club outing who dance to the same records week in week out or do they have 30 years of northern soul under their belt? Just because we sit there not dressed in baggies and vests, full circle skirts, ankle socks and our hair in pigtails it doesn't mean we "Don't Know" what a good northern soul track is (not patronising those who wear this gear, each to their own but I think some of them would dance to "Ring-A-Ring-A-Roses - We all fall down" if you told 'em it was Northern Soul ) Bring it on

I asked one particular DJ for a record, Cecil Washington - I Don't Like To Lose, to be told "Oh I can't play that here, it's too risky" - top northern tune at a nothern soul night and no balls to play it to a crowd of 150/200. A tune you don't very often hear due to not many DJ's owning a copy and it was too risky ??? WHAT! Back to my chair to sit on my arse all night while sulking over my pint.

JMYTG's post is coming from frustration and it must be as frustrating for DJs with decent tunes in their box who daren't play them for fear of clearing the dance floor. It's been known for about 5 of us out of 200 to be on the dancefloor to Toni Basil - Breakaway, then to get stared at for dancing to it ! Also Tony Middleton - To The Ends of the Earth, totally cleared the dancefloor - how many of you DJ's who post on these boards would play that if you owned one at a regular soul night? Or is it TOO RISKY ? The other end of the scale, you can ask for a great record to be told "Oh I can't play that it's only worth a tenner" ??? and your point is ??? if it's a tenner or a grande and it's good, get it on those decks!

The rare crossover scene in Notts used to be just that, with some excellent new found stuff being played regularly, and some rare rocking horse expensive good sounding tunes that folks do appreciate, even though they don't dance to them and can't afford to buy them themselves. It made a refreshing change to sit and actually listen to some decent music played by the likes of Rob Thomas and not expect to dance all night.

The last rare soul night I went to was creeping into the Funk scene of 25 odd years ago when many of us hung up our shoes. Funk isn't "Soulful" to me. I've got more soul in my left tit!

There is a big void in the soul scene of today, between a night of the 100mph stompers of yesteryear to the tailor made/modern/funk soul of today, a big void, and I wished someone had the balls to fill it.

so what you are saying is you dont mind going out week in week out and listening to the same records.im sure you have not been to every do here in notts,if you did you would see what i was on about.like my first post, ginger tayor played here and he was awful.one of the biggest names in the country....djs bein told what they can and cant play does not make a good dj

well personaly i myself as a warm up dj play what i call underplayed oldies tunes people know but not heard very often but usualy only playing to about 20 people half of wich are my traveling buddies but a you have to start somewere,but having said that i do like rare stuff and dance alot even if its a new sound to me, if the beat gets me im up,some people only dance to records they no.

A good DJ is a DJ who plays the music that is advertised on the flyer to a crowd who have paid thier money for such tunes. ie- rare soul then play rare soul, oldies then play oldies. if it states across the board then its easy, play your style of across the board whatever that may be, and leave the other styles to the promoter who should only get the right DJs for thier night as they should be the ones responsible for that part.

If a punter goes to a rare soul night for example and complains about not hearing any oldies then thats his ignorance and fault not the DJs.

Does he/she DJ have to be able to dance ?,

Experience should count for a lot and the DJ should be able to read the audience especially if they aint playing until a couple of hours into the night/er.

if said DJ is to scared to express themselves in thier music they OWN then maybe they aint as good as we or they think they are or they are at the wrong venue and that then should be the promoters fault again.

Quality always shines through in the end and a good promoter knows a good DJ and if they fit the bill then you very rarely hear any complaints from those in attendance or do you.

A mother and father make a good DJ.

I agree in principle with what you were saying but didn't comment because you were talking about the Notts scene & i don't know that neck of the woods but if i read between the lines you were saying there's basically no middle ground & in that i agree that can sometimes be the case. Too much rare stuff can wash over you & too much commercial stuff is boring, it's all about striking a balance.

Of course there's still some brilliant venues & brilliant djs playing interesting choices, played with passion & excitement at the right tempo at the right time but by the sounds of it not venues you've been to recently.

I share your frustration my friend but i don't totally blame the djs, i've seen people trying really hard in the past to play interesting sets but only to get blanked by the audience & having to resort to the same old tunes yet again.

I know there are a lot of venues that this doesn't happen at & i intend to get to some of these this year, i know i always hark on about it but the Capitol Soul Club was one of those places where you could play records that noone knew & they went down a storm but this was one of those occasions where the audience & djs were in perfect synchronicity & before anyone jumps down my throat i know there are other venues in London & in the rest of the world that has this same relationship.

I share your frustration my friend but i don't totally blame the djs, i've seen people trying really hard in the past to play interesting sets but only to get blanked by the audience & having to resort to the same old tunes yet again.

I know there are a lot of venues that this doesn't happen at & i intend to get to some of these this year, i know i always hark on about it but the Capitol Soul Club was one of those places where you could play records that noone knew & they went down a storm but this was one of those occasions where the audience & djs were in perfect synchronicity & before anyone jumps down my throat i know there are other venues in London & in the rest of the world that has this same relationship.

just been through my boxes..these are a few tunes i would like to hear.all tried and tested clasics in my eyes yet over the last 6-7 years maybe longer i have never heard these played out in notts.most probably played to death somewhere in the country

as you know bish.theres that middle part of the scene thats missing.lots have started new venues up of late and not one of them are doing owt different to the ones that have been going for a few years now.one or two of us have talked about starting a do but i think it might be like trying to flog a dead horse

a really crap excuse but i work six days a week and i only get out saturday nights.i used to go to bretby and alnighters in derby.dont drive so have to rely on lifts.got fed up of the promises off people that dont i mention it anymore,i just hope and i think the scene in notts could be really good again.ive seen some playlist from dos around the country and sometimes i just cry when i read them because they have been really good.trust me if i could i would be out of notts most weekends.i know people have taken a dis-like to me say that but i wish they would wake up open up their ears and appreciate the music a bit more

Some nice tunes, but if I was a DJ not anything that I would play. But as has been said different people enjoy different things. You could consider setting up your own night, but then competition is pretty fierce and there are a limited amount of punters....question is are there enough punters who share your thoughts/taste to make a night worthwhile?

In moments of boredom I've often wondered what I would play if I ever did a DJ set and how it would go down with the crowd. I think my problem would be that I would just play stuff that I like....but I'm not really sure if that would go down all that well with the crowd

Further afield, up Norf, there's not so many soul nights and folks do have to travel for an hour or two to get a soul night in. Us Notts folks shouldn't have to travel for more than 15 minutes.

There's two or three soul nights every week within a 20 mile radius of me, but I find they are pretty much the same, with the exception of a couple a month. The list JMYTG put up earlier has become the Notts Soul Bible/Rule Book Of Northern Soul! Same old "Clay" at the end of the day, week in week out and it's getting unbelievably boring !

Bish, why do you travel when there's soul nights on your doorstep ? Don't you care much for "Clay" either?

THEY ARE NOT MY FAVS,JUST A COUPLE TO HAND.SOME OFF THEM TUNES SHOULD OUT PLAYED BY NOW.I BET MOST OF THE LOCAL DJS (I.E. IN NOTTS) DONT EVEN OWN A COPY

is it just the tunes he plays

or is it the tunes he owns and plays

supposing he borrows a few tunes and plays them along with his own (he does not own them) is that ok ?

i think that to many dj's today play what they want to play the old ego takes over and for what my opion is worth (witch aint much) a good dj plays to the floor and watches what go on or not that the case may be i know i can name my top dj's but wont as it might start a riot and i aint going there

Hi, it wasnt sarcasm is was meant to be tounge in cheek but hey there goes,

I have read through the posts and i do agree with you but it is horses for courses and like myself if i want to hear great new or different tunes so i have to travel further afield as i live in kent and apart from 1 local night every 2 months i have to travel at least 40 miles for a local night, Are you the minority in Notts if not then surely there is room for a night of the stuff your looking for but who would be willing to put it on, dilemas all round in this lovely scene of ours but thats what makes it so great for each and everyone of us no matter what taste we may have.

in your first list i do have a couple i never tire of hearing and you put a couple of great tunes in the second one too. its not all bad really is it, i dont mind an oldies night but there is nothing like hearing tunes you never heard or rarely hear is there.

Keep your chin up and imagine what our lifes would be like without it all.
