February 6, 200718 yr Just heard a trailer for a Radio 4 programme called The Story of Northern Soul its on today Tues at 11.30 Tone Just starting to listen to this. Tim Brown currently recalling history. But Ian Levine is also on, no doubt holding forth about his contribution to the scene!!! This is what the Radio 4 website says about the show: Writer and cultural historian CP Lee explores the strange world of Northern Soul music, which first came to Britain in the early 1960s. This underground cultural phenomenon was driven by a love of black American artists who had failed to make a success in the USA. Contributors include designer Wayne Hemingway, producer Ian Levine, DJ Jo Wallace and Stuart Cosgrove. Nothing, as yet, that interesting Brian Edited February 6, 200718 yr by Brian Ellis

Concentrating on anything other than the real music - Casino versus Mecca; baggy trousers; wedge haircuts; drugs; Skiing in the snow and to finish off - the epitome of all 'soul' records - Judy Street 'What' . IMHO a very poor offering - would have expected a far better and more intellectual discussion from Radio 4. Brian

February 6, 200718 yr Nice to see the programme nestled between a production about global warming and choosing a select committe for going green! I enjoyed it. Thank god Hull was mentioned. My first record buying days were there being my home town. Yes, we even knew about Ric Tic records in those days.

A reasonable introduction to Northern Soul, I suppose - mainly features Ian Levine, Stuart Cosgrove & Tim Brown, with a little bit of Wayne Hemingway going on about wedge haircuts & high-waisters. Might get a few Radio 4 types tapping their feet, but I don't think you Soul Sourcerers will find much of interest (or, for that matter, too much to complain about).

Tony Ellis (no relation) Just after the programme finished, over on BBC London on Robert Elms programme, by coincidence, he was asking where he could go to see dancers in action. He particularly mentioned Northern soul and asked if 100 club was still on. He wanted listeners to ring in and tell him where he could go...I was tempted to tell him to log onto Soul Source but I knew he had been slated on here so I didn't!!! I often listen to his programme as I like it's content about London-centric content..... it's quirky stories, architecture, people and history. R.E does annoy me but nowhere near as much as he seems to annoy everyone else on here!

February 6, 200718 yr I found the Carol Anderson bit bizzare, a half hour potted history of NS didn't really warrant mentioning that Carol was a large lady compared to Dianna Ross. Also Tim Browns explanation of what a "Div" and a "Head the ball" is, and nearly everone a Wigan was asleep......bizzare BH

I couldn't possibly comment on the above as when the head count was taken...........I was asleep at the time.
