I was in a record shop lunchtime yesterday and came across the soulful house section (well, it was very exciting, and I'd just passed the Agent Provocateur window display).

Of course I know naff all about Soulful House so couldn't decide what to spend my pennies on. I did hear some corking tunes in the little room at the Cardiff allnighter a couple of months ago that sparked my interest.

Can anyone recommend any compilation albums as a gentle introduction to the genre?

I love House, (expecially Soulful stuff) and have done since the early days! The "Soulfuric Sessions" on Defected has always been one of my fav funky soul house compilations. Soulfuric records used to do some top 12 inches. Urban Blues Project, Mambana, Re Vibal Experience all great funk n soul!

'Dr Bob Jones presents Inspirational Dance'.

This compilation leans heavily on remakes of early Disco and Afro-tribal grooves. The track 'somewhere, somehow (there's a soul heaven) by Deep Sensation is a killerversion of 'we're on the right track' by South Shore Commission. Very well done and 'real'. The instrumental break of 'we're on the right track' with the strings is used almost entirely on this track. Chilling!

Also check out singer Kenny Bobien, one of the most influential singers of the genre.

remake , if you can call it that is the already mentioned 'Soul Heaven', which also has the vocals to part of 'Is It Because I'm Black' - Syl Johnson.

'SOLID GROUND' -Jasper St Company- big underground Baltimore tune that kicked off the interest in the gospel dance scene in Baltimore /Washington when it was originaly released on Basement Boys.Also influenced DJ's like Andy Davis and Terry Jones to start spinning Soulfgul House in their sets.

The album is a mixture of Soul Dance tracks and Jazz Dance instrumentals, but disco, sorry but i'm not hearing that.

I posted that list on the Z Board (Dave Lee's) and one of the Belgian lads on there spotted 'FTSB' on the list.

It turns out he was a friend of the son of the bloke who released it. He apparently isn't as involved with music as he was but was pleased if not a little bewildered to see his record had been played in a UK club.

Movin' was the label for me at that time with great dancer, Key Choice's Rejoyce, was there Kenny Bobien in the group?!

Peven Everett is a top dancer at the moment. And from Deep Haven, Big Brooklyn Red is good male vocal mover and Kt Brooks too. Regarding current Dj Spinna works, Gordon Chambers is also the one for soulies.

As for me, didn't buy new releases for 15 years until last year. Therefore I know I'd overlooked many good things. However, current new stuffs(house music especially) is also good, so I can enjoy, don't regret. Thanks for your guides very much!

Regarding deep house from Emotive label, don't forget Tony Lee's No Matter please Tony. And yes, James Howard's Feeling Good is a bomb to me. Honestly say I didn't played it well in these 15 years, but surprised by the quality of the groove only a few weeks ago! Personally prefer the dub mix and it's in the latest mix of Rhythmic Freedom show. Them is still house-ing hahah.
