Can somebody help please?

I saw the Miracles ( Billy Griffin) at Manchester Free Trade Hall in I think , 1975.

I thought the bill included The Tymes. Some doubt about it.

I saw the Spinners and Four Tops at Manchester Opera House.

I think this was 1975.

Can anybody confirm where, and with who, The Tymes appeared.

Thanks

Thanks, but I don't think that was the show I saw. The Miracles were top if the bill.

April 1976 has been suggested...that sounds right, but I thought that The Tymes supported them.

The Miracles appeared at the Free Trade Hall on 13.4.76 no mention on poster of supporting act.

Tried putting a link but did not work

Thank you.

That will be the show.

Others suggested the Tymes opened for the Four Tops, but I was sure the Tymes appeared at the Free Trade Hall with The Miracles.

Spinners/ Four Tops definetly at the Opera House...75 or 76.

Don't recall The Tymes with the Four Tops, but I saw them several times over the years and memory plays tricks some times.

Happy with that date.

Can't find that Spinners/ Four Tops Opera House. It's funny the things that stick with you...I vividly recall meeting a friend outside, who said that the Spinners blew the Four Tops away..that's how I felt.

But we'd seen the Four Tops quite a few times , and as the saying goes, 'familiarity breeds contempt,'.

Not quite contempt then, but the Tops seemed ,'tired in comparison.

Now...did I see The Spinners on another show...as the headline act?? I did see some mixed shows....Tavares supporting Frankie Valli & Four Seasons at the Apollo.

Chic supported by Ray Parker jr. At the Apollo.

Numerous Four Tops.

Jr Walker/ Edwin Starr..Free trade Hall.

Temptations/ Jr Walker..Free Trade Hall.

Not trying to say you are wrong but the Spinners were massive in the 70s and to tour with the Four Tops would be a dream but two different label artists who were both big I would assume improbable but I do not know just a hunch.

I have the Detroit Spinners on the Atlantic Road Show with hosted by Emperor Roskoe with support from Jimmy Castor and I think Sister Sledge at the Opera House Sunday April the 6th. Then again with Brass Construction as support Saturday 30th April 1977 at I think the Palace, only half a ticket.

I have a Four Tops ticket for the Opera House with the support act written in biro, unfortunately can't make out the name, starts with an S maybe second letter P so could be the one you are talking about.

Marvin Gaye, I've got one from the ABC at Ardwick,no date and no indication of support.

Gladys Knight, Odeon theatre, November the third, what a night that was,got hers and the Pips autographs after the show in the program which I stupidly gave away about five years ago.

I'll try and take some pics, might jog a few more memories of shows you hacmve forgotten about,I didnt realise I'd seen Herbie Hancock until I took the board out of the frame.

Scary stuff.

This means I went to this show with a lady friend of 1973 vintage, and not the lady friend of 1975 vintage.

Leave it at that...😉

I saw them twice, first time they were brilliant, second time possibly the one you saw, i only went due to my cousin liking them,by then they were singing Rock and Roll Baby and the like. I wasn't impressed.

My memory of the Denice Williams was Lenny Williams supporting her ,only went to see him, a few stood up applauding after he sang So Very Hard To Go and got confused looks from the Deniece Williams fans, I thought she was crap. he was brilliant, from memory sang nearly all the songs from his first solo album.

I seem to remember Gwen was supposed to be on the George McCrae bill but had a cold and didnt appear, were KC and the Sunshine band also support?

  • Author

Don't recall KC....might have been.

An odd one...A variety show at the Palace. Dionne Warwick..on the bill was Jimmy Helms, a comedian, Italian Opera singer, juggler type.

Must have been a Charity event. Dionne had to sit on a stool , couldn't walk about..tetanus jab in her backside

Marvin was definitely supported by Rose Banks her single "Darling Baby" was on UK release at the time a nice version of the Elgins.

Yes. Took a holdall of my Motown scrapbooks in the hope Marvin could sign a few . Bouncer took the bag in. About 30 min later, bag returned full of Marvin Gaye autographs.

Dave Godin was in the dressing room with him, and about 3 weeks later he wrote about my bag in Blues and Soul. 1976 .

Met Eddie Kendricks backstage hours before his show with David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards.....just the two of us. Signed all my albums never said a word at all...no respone at all.

Later , during show, came into the audience, spotted me and waved..clear communication.

Had a reputation of being moody, but he was clearly ill. Both Ruffin and he sadly died months after

I remember that one, lady comedian was very good, don't recall Jimmy Helms , I recall her coming on with a walking stick but though she had had an accident, I don't recall it being a charity event though. these are great memories. We were lucky in that period 71 to 80 to have the chance to see so many major soul acts across all genres in Manchester.

One of my memories is deciding at the last minute to go to the first night of the Warner Brothers music tour that was spread over two nights. We had tickets for the second night with the Doobie Brothers and Graham Central Station deciding at 5 o'clock on the night I couldn't miss the chance to see Tower of Power, we were just about to go to the ticket office when a bloke asked did we have tickets.thinking he was a tout we said no, he promptly gave us two tickets, five rows back courtesy of Warner Brothers. I made someone else's night as a guy asked had we any spare tickets ,luckily the Warner brothers chap was still about so i directed him there, he ended up sat behind us. Tower of Power were brilliant, at one point the brass players coming of the stage dancing up and down the aisle still playing, just fabulous.

Hello,

Yes these events bring back good memories. I saw quite a few, but clearly others like yourself leave me standing. Your ticket collection is amazing.

I went to queue for Stalls tickets for Diana Ross/ Devastating Affair.

Big queues, and no stalls left. I was disappointed but about to buy circle, when the Clerk said " you could have a Private Box'...Royal Family style. Snapped it up....and not too expensive as I recall.

Jackson 5 / Sisters Love...wow, what a mismatch.Belle Vue Kings Hall/ Circus top.

Smokey Robinson..saw twice, can't recall first venue but second was Davenport Theatre Stockport. That was VERY memorable. Took my albums....Bouncer took them into Smokey. Bouncer returned, ,"Smokey want to know who it's dedicated to?"

Gave him my name along with wife's. Disaster, Smokey got the incorrect name of Wife..which just happened to be the same as previous girlfriend. Oh Dear.

Went to the Apollo to see Gladys Knight. Went for a beer in the Apsley Cottage?? , absolutely rammed and had to fight to get to the bar. Guy , black tie and dinner suit turned around and said " don't worry son, no rush...we're the band!

Belle Vue, those wooden benches we couldn't have been sat any further back, have a vague memory of being cold there too, amazed at women screaming at the sound or just Barry's voice during Walking in the rain, seem to recall the concert was well constructed with the orchestra doing their bit the the ladies leading on to Big bazza himself.

Diana Ross for me wasn't "oh I must see her" more didn't want to miss the chance of seeing her, i was surprised how much I enjoyed the gig.

On the getting autographs after the Gladys knight finished my mate who was black (can I say that) and had an afro said we are going to the stage door for autographs, When I got there he had disappeared, there were probably about twenty in the queue and we were told Miss Knight will see you five at a time. I could have dropped to the floor when my turn came, my mate was stood there with the group and whether true or not he never changed his story he claimed he even signed a few programmes.

Did you see Jimmy Ruffin in either Oldham or Rochdale in a club I can't remember the name of ? Long walk home where we hitched a lift from a bloke in a very small van, only room for one in the front, the rest of us climbed in the back, we'd only gone a mile when there was a furious banging on the back panel ,van skidded to a halt, back doors flew open and my mate screamed get out get out, the bloke had tried to touch him up yes
