I the light of the recent cover up of the mediocre Smoove ( featuring John Turrell - let us not forget that part ) 45 as Frank Popp , it led me to recalling those " halcyon days " of the scene , when the practice of covering up new / emerging tunes , was common practice in order to " protect " the true identity of the title and artist ...........

I know it is a long shot , but can anyone remember what the first one was , or ones , were , and by which DJ ?

If thats the case then i understand, but didn`t he also cover EDDIE HOLMAN-WHERE I`M NOT WANTED? and then uncover it, just seems a bit strange to cover up tunes that are deffo one offs, wasn`t eddie holman taken from tapes? can understand wanting to cover something to personalize the record to yourself, and to hide its identity so other copies are not unearthed, but as i say things as eddie holman, that is a deffo one off bit strange don`t you think? :sweatingbullets:

Never known this played as a cover up Harry.

Because they didn't know what it actually was!

Ah well that explains it then pete never new that, thanks for info, got a listing somewhere with eddie holman on covered up, i`ll dig it out and post it up :sweatingbullets:

What I was going to say about Eddie Holman though Harry was, it's so obviously Eddie Holman that he couldn't cover it up. Well I wouldn't have thought so.

I thought the Lamont Cranston was played on the Alexis Corner show on a Sunday night.

It was mate, not sure he knew anything about its Northern plays though as he said full name. I managed to pick the LP up on holiday in Canada just a few weeks later, I drag it out every so often and think HTF did that ever get played (and thats just looking at the album cover  )

I am still under the impression that in the later days of the casino a cover up was to get a record passed as ok to play by the hard core Torcher's, you have so many same names like Rose Valentine, Christine Cooper and Spyder Turner all well established artist so to find another record by them all the better and yes exclusivity of a play.

As i said in earlier posts, its allways intrigued me the cover up thing, whilst i can understand the concept of covering a record to personalize it for your own spot and so others can`t find the original title, some of the records were so rare they didn`t need a cover up, & then again some of the really rare & are still rare to trhis day were never covered? i can understand the argument of well at that time they didn`t know just how rare the tracks were, but then again why were some covered and others not? i can`t remember JIMMY BURNS ever being covered or DON GARDNER but others such as JOHN & THE WIERDEST were
