Hi Mick

Yes, Edwin Starr's first releases were on the Detroit-based Ric-Tic label in the USA. As mentioned above, Motown bought out Ric-Tic and associated labels such as Golden World. Ric-Tic in particular was strong competition for Motown, and many of the Ric-Tic recordings actually used the same highly talented Detroit session musicians as Motown.

All of Edwin's original Ric-Tic 45s are worth picking up and include some real soul classics. Some can be found for just a few pounds. Others are rarer and more expensive - notably Scott's On Swingers [a version of Stop Her On Sight] and You're My Mellow. Edwin's later work on Motown is also significant in it's own right - tracks such as 25 Miles and My Weakness Is You.

Tracks which originally came out in the USA on Ric-Tic, such as Agent OO-Soul and Headline News, were also released later by Motown on the Tamla-Motown label in the UK.

In the USA, "Motown" was actually a family of labels including Motown itself, Tamla, VIP, Gordy etc.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Richard
