Ok good folks of the rare soul scene

This is something that's always nagged me so im gonna ask the million dollar question

But before i do, and before anyone takes it the wrong way ,let me state "i categorically don't hold any grudges to those who fall into this criteria" .

Ever since i've listened ,collected vinyl and done a dj spot, i've heard people say "it's not about expensive records ,theres some great cheap but quality stuff out there ,or "i get more satisfaction outta playing a cheap record than a big ticket choon anyday of the week"

So why is it when i see all the well known ,big name dj's on our scene ,they play 99% rare ,expensive items that most people A) Will probably never be able to afford or

never even find one for sale!

Don't get me wrong i love hearing dog rare records that sound great ,just find this so contradicting,maybe even a tad patronising??

Nev, I think the answer to your puzzle is this:

The well known dj's play the rare as.... stuff simply because THEY CAN! Simple as that I think. Although they do sometimes slip in cheap quality.

imho is it because they just want to show off there collection to the masses but playing to fill the dancefloor should be first and formost in my book

not a collector as such nowadays, so i don't care if it cost £1 or £5,000. but i suppose you book a dj for his/her quality records and that's what sets them apart that they DO have the un-obtainable. would richard have been so good or levine/curtis etc if they played the same as everyone else. why should a serious collector play a cheap record. he's a collector of rare soul, he doesn't need to i suppose. plenty of cheap and rare soul played at railway club in leeds tomorrow!!!! plug. plug.

Imho,if you've got it flaunt it,if you ain't,play quality.

Lesser mortals have to play some inexpensive items to get by.

Nice to hear a big name drop some accessible tunes in a set,but still get a buzz outta hearing the Big Ticket items .

Spot on IMHO. Seen too many DJ's playing from their "rare" box and clearing the floor. It's atmosphere that counts in my book in turning a good into a great night.

Probably because most of the time the 'big name' DJs are booked at venues to fill the floor, so end up satisfying the promoter and the majority of the dancefloor by playing safe.

There are, of course, some who simply can't think 'outside of the (safe)box'

Luckily, there are a few DJs out there who consistantly do the opposite, Karl Heard and Johnny Beggs being 2 prime examples, and guess where they are DJing this saturday...

My apologies for this being slightly off thread but can someone tell me what these present 'big ticket' numbers are?

Should make an interesting list and I suspect the list might differ depending on region.

Also, I need to know for when I win the lottery this weekend!!!!

Bit of a plug there for Neil (no relation). Of course the Temps and Tops aren't in Benidorm..............it was the Drifters I saw there last time (and Elvis of course).

Trying hard to find the link between Sticky Vicky and rare box; as one advert said "She only brings out the tree at Xmas!!!!"
