Thanks Mark. I wonder what the "Wonderwoman" record is that they referred to?

It could be Sandy Barber on Olde World. Great album and the 12" has the excellent 'Remember Me' on the flip.

I see that Mods get a good bashing in both articles, Keb describing them (me included I guess) as 'sheep'. Maybe not the wisest term for a guy from Elgin to use post-976-1229522124.jpg! Seriously, though what would Northern have been in the 80s without the younger mod kids? We didn't all like Secret Affair you know!

The Sandy Barber album has a worthwhile version of Bessie Banks' "Don't You Worry Baby"!

It got a few spins at the latter-day Mecca, after 1979.

Great article,

The complete history of the Northern scene on 2 pages, and looking back I agree with all of it.

Some good stuff in there, those who didn't know soul from a children's theme tune :P I thought his defence of the term 'northern soul' was good, especially thesedays when we all try to differentiate ourselves from the oldies scene by calling it 'rare soul', that made me think. Most interesting was the way the oldies scene began as a reaction to the new (not newies) crap that was being played and passed off as northern, so in some ways it was the most 'soulful' aspect, that had never occured to me before. Unfortunately it became stuck in the past.

By the way, we did like Tony Galla... we just didn't dance to it. I can remember a kind of 'sitting and listening' a lot more at Stafford, stroking the old chin.... ph34r.gif
