On a "Northern Soul All Nighter" double cd I have this unusual version called "Harlem Shuffle '66". Does somebody know if this is the earlier version?

It sounds so much better (and faster) than the one I have on vinyl. Problem is: how do you recognize this version from the slow ones (caus it's almost the same title)?

Any info available like label, pressing etc. ?

Thanks!

If it's the "More Mirwood" sounding cut it's on one of those "Keep The Faith" LPs on Joy (part of President) issued in the 70s. There was a thread about them a couple of weeks ago.

Later rather than earlier though as the Marc issue is 1963

Really???  No, can't be, can it?

I'm sure it is Pete. Tim Neely's Goldmine Price Guide to 45 RPM Records say so and so does this:

https://www.icebergradio.com/artist/25483/bob_and_earl.html

I recall reading somewhere else that it was released in December 63 and charted early 64.

Godz

so the later version of '66 is the "soulfull" one, the one i'm looking for.

thanks Godz and Pete!

I'll go hunting for it.

Definately later- its a Mirwood cut. On most of the Bob and Earl albums

Anorak time....

Delta number for Marc issue is 49943 which dates it as 1963..

All the Bob and Earl stuff is confusing.

The original is on Marc from '63.

As Platters81 says a version came out on Jay Boy credited to Bob and Earl. I thought I had the 45 but a check reveals not. I'm assuming it's the faster more Mirwood sounding version which also appears on the Crestview and Upfront albums because all the other JayBoy Mirwood label reissues are from err... Mirwood. However the album versions are Jackie Lee solo and not Bob And Earl.

There's also a slower instrumental version which is on the back of some reissue 45's (Contempo for instance) and sounds later that the original 45 (its not the same backing track) but isn't the later recording either. But I'm sure I have or had the Mirwood version as an instrumental somewhere.

Yes, you're correct Simon...

Some of the confusion about the '63 issue may lie in rare soul folklore - "Harlem Shuffle" was truly a "Sleeper", its first UK issue was, I believe, 1965 but it was re-plugged (not reissued!) and played constantly on Sue over the years, culminating in the Island reissue in 1969 which got it into the UK top ten.

.

And IMHO the "fast" version ain't a patch on the original, sounds like a real "throwaway" job to me!

Jerry.

My only query was that this 1963 version - the one with the famous intro - is so removed from anything else issued in that year I was sure it had to be later.

Totally agree with you Pete, couldn't have put it better myself. truly a ground-breaking track!

Jerry.

...and for true anoraks its US chart debut was at no.91 on the Cashbox chart w/e 28 December 1963.

You'll have to go out the front Jerry.

Ken is asleep in the backdoor way.

scan of unusual Lebanese Island issue of the slow version.......must have been a floorpacker in Beirut....... :wicked:

So is the Jay Boy 45 Bob And Earl or Jackie Lee solo?

Agreed though - the original"Harlem Shuffle" somehow sounds not exactly timeless but almost in a little time of its own. Its just a great record.
