Dj's Running Over Their Times
A little story. At the second Prestatyn, the Thursday night was a much smaller affair and was really just for the DJs and guests. It was all held in the Queen Vic, so that gives you an idea of how many were involved. The DJs for the night were picked on a pretty informal basis, and had an hour each. Roger Banks and I decided we would split an hour betwen us. With about twenty minutes to go Roger said "Turn your watch back ten minutes". I duly did so, and when the next DJ (And I won't embarrass him by naming him, but he's on SS) arrived to sort his records out with about five minutes to go, Roger said words to the effect "Blimey you're early", and showed him the time on his watch. Now the said DJ wasn't totally daft, he didn't trust Roger, so came and asked me what time I made it (Obviously thinking I was more trustworthy) Of course my watch agreed with Roger's, so he left the stage and said I'll come back in fifteen minutes. To the delight of me and Roger we could see him looking at his watch, shaking his wrist to see if it was still working, and holding it to his ear to see if it was ticking. It was only when he asked a couple of his mates what time they made it that he sussed he'd been done ! As the dawn of realisation spread across his face he approached the decks to find me and Roger helpless with laughter. He suggested that none of our parents were married and promptly put the next record on, and used the mic to tell everyone what a pair of twats we were. He really did take in good spirit though and saw the funny side, but not as funny as me and Roger thought it was

Except for one small point.....'Baby Love' was on STATESIDE, not Motown, which is why I said The Four Tops. If you'd asked the right question, you'd have got the right answer, ie which Motown ARTIST had the first number 1 in the UK, not what was the first Motown number 1 in the UK, because Baby Love WASN'T ON MOTOWN You muppet

Cynthia And The Imaginations
If it's in the listing, it means it was scheduled for release, which sort of implies that it would exist. Of course whether it did actually get released is a totally different thing

Best Junk Shop Finds
Quite a few years ago I was in my local second hand record shop when someone came in and sold the owner, Richard, a carrier bag of records for £15. Richard turned to me and said "These are your sort of thing Dave". There were about fifty import singles, at least two thirds of which were northern. I offered Richard twenty five quid, which he gladly accepted and said "that's a quick tenner". I think I made about £600 off the sale of the contents of that carrier bag

Thanks Simon, but I'm well down the list I sometimes feel that my memory is failing because I can listen to a record, sing along to all the words, and then can't remember what it is ! When I do remember I then realise I've got a copy, which makes it worse. What I am good at, is not remembering information itself, but remembering where the information is, so I can go and look it up. I'm also a pretty good researcher, so can find information and link odd bits together to form the whole picture. In terms of remembering record information Johnny Weston, or Woody are the guys I tend to ask because as I've already said I'm hopeless at that sort of thing (Mind you, I could probably tell you all sorts of trivia when someone had indentified the record for me )

Import Duty On Records
Noticed there was a discussion going on about when import duty becomes payable. Well here's what HM Revenue & Customs site says 2. Postal Packages imported from countries outside the EU top ^ 2.1 Does the sender have to declare the goods? Under international postal agreements the sender must complete a customs declaration (CN22 or CN23) which in most cases should be affixed to the package. The declaration includes a description of the goods, the value and whether they are gifts or commercial items. Any Post Office abroad should be able to give advice to the sender. It is in your own interest to ensure, wherever possible, that the sender abroad makes a complete and accurate declaration. If no declaration is made, or the information is inaccurate, the package may be delayed while we make further enquiries, or in some cases the package and its contents may be seized. top ^ 2.2 Do I have to pay import duties and/or import VAT on goods sent to me? Most goods arriving in the UK from outside the EU are liable to any or all of the following taxes: customs duty excise duty import VAT and must be paid whether: you purchase the goods or receive them as a gift; the goods are new or used (including antiques) the goods are for your private use or for sale top ^ 2.3 Are import duties and import VAT always payable? No. Customs duty is waived if the amount of duty is less than £7. Import VAT is not payable on: commercial consignments eg goods purchased over the internet with an intrinsic value not exceeding £18, but this does not include alcohol, tobacco products, perfume or toilet waters gifts, excluding alcohol, tobacco, perfumes and toilet waters, with a value not exceeding £36 and which comply with the rules shown in paragraph 2.4. There are a number of other circumstances where relief from some or all customs charges may be available. If you think your goods may be eligible for a relief you should contact the National Advice Service for further information. top ^ 2.4 Gifts Goods sent as a gift are not free of import duties and import VAT. However, customs duty will not be collected if the amount is less than £7, and import VAT is not chargeable if: the value of the gift does not exceed £36 the customs declaration is completed correctly the gift has been sent from a private person outside the EU to a private person(s) in this country the gift is for the use of either yourself or your family there is no commercial or trade element and the gift has not been paid for either directly or indirectly the gift is of an occasional nature only eg for a birthday or anniversary. Please note the purchase of goods from outside the EU to give as a gift to a relative or friend, whether or not addressed to that person, is treated as a 'commercial consignment' for which the import VAT relief threshold is £18 (paragraph 2.3 refers).
