First Heard On Kent Lp's
Just thought I'd start a thread with regards to the Kent Lp's that were issued during the 80's. For me they opened my ears to many new sounds. I discovered them through reading a small article in Jamming magazine. I only bought that, because it had a free single with The Style Council & The Redskins having a track each on it amongst others. Anyway the first Kent Lp I bought was the second release, For Dancers Also. Country Girl, what a track that was, don't even get me started on the Floorshakers or Footstompers albums! Back on track now, thought I'd just ask people what were the tracks (& the albums) that they remember the most. The following is one that sticks in my mind and I was reminded off when I saw ZZ Hill's Have Mercy Somebody listed for sale. Anyway it's from ZZ Hill's Dues Paid In Full Lp (Kent 018). ZZ Hill - You Got What I Need - C'mon, some of you out there must have their favourites! For all those old timers that bang on about Motown Chartbusters 3 in the 60's, there has to be just as many who remember their Kent albums in the 80's!

I'd Like To Order A Record Please
Why enquire about availability if you don't want to buy it?

Rules
For arguments sake. Is it acceptable to play out Barbara Lewis - The Stars or Tommy Hunts - Pretty Part Of You on Horaces? And if not, on which label would they be acceptable?
-
Promoters
I saw on one of the flyers on his (PhilB) site the name of John Manship. Does this mean you will also be boycotting any of John Manships sales or auctions, as well? Or would it be that his sales are Ok, just not to ask him to dj? Just wondering where you'd draw the line?

Allnighter Enticer
See this I think is the difference. Whereas you may have company on your journies, I'm Billy No Mates, so the driving can probably seem longer to me!
-
Allnighter Enticer
I take my hat off to you Dave , I know you travel the length and breadth of this country from the South Coast to attend allnighters. So for you to do all that and leave early would be pointless. What I was trying to say (in my naieve manner) was those that live more local to nighter venues (or anywhere along the M62 ). I have a question (sorry make that some) for you Dave. When attending allnighters (say Burnley for instance, purely because it's a long way from Hampshire before anyone says anything), do you drive up to arrive at the start time or do you arrive early at a friends for a few hours to relax after the drive? Also is it similar for the journey home, do you just drive straight home afterwards? It's just that I think it's the travelling part that puts me off most times.

Allnighter Enticer
To be honest nothing so to speak would make me go. The only one I'd say that I've been to on an irregular basis is the 100 Club, only other allnighter that I've been to in the past couple of years was the 1st Wotton Hall one in Gloucester. I prefer soul-nights to allnighters, like many others my main priority is my family. Due to the nature of my work I get 2 weekends off out of 4, so the thought of spending a few hours driving followed by an 8 hour allnighter, then a return journey, culminating in Sunday spent allday in bed, is to me a waste of a weekend off. However, I would like to attend the 100 Club more than I do. It's very close to where I live, I can drive up there and get there for the start (10pm) and then bail out at 2am or 3am, get home and still get enough kip in before spending Sunday with the family. I've only ever managed to last a whole night once, this was when I went by train, because the time before I'd got a nightbus home (after that time I swore I'd never get a nightbus ). The main problems are that it always seems to be on when I'm working at weekends, or I remember the awful traffic driving up London and I get put off (poor excuse really, just getting lazy I suppose). The main draw for me at the 100 Club isn't so much the music to be heard, but more the music that is for sale! As for the Wotton Hall, my In-Laws live within a 5 minute drive of the venue, so if I'm not working and I've got the money then me and the brother-in-law go. Also the kids get to see their grandparents & uncle, so I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak. A more interesting question could be, How many so-called allnighter goers (those that say they attend as many as they can) regularly leave before the end or last just a few hours? I'd guess there's quite a few so-called allnighter goers that just use them like a soul-night, just go for 3 to 4 hours, but because they've been to an "allnighter", they can call themselves allnighter goers!

Soul Source Record Buyers - Tightest In The World
I've never asked discount from any seller, whether on here or via lists. Think the only time I'll haggle maybe at a car boot sale, even then it's not that often. I have a simple way of buying records, if I think it's a fair price and I can afford it,I'll buy it. If I think it's too expensive I don't. Simples!

Gino Washington - I'll Be Around
Forgot to mention, which order were they released? Dave Rimmers site has it as Mala '68, then Atac Promo & stock '69, but on soulful detroit forum it says Mala '69 . Anyone know any different?

Gino Washington - I'll Be Around
As far as I'm aware this was released 3 times, Mala (promo), Atac (promo) & Atac (stock). I received a Atac copy through the post today, which I won on Ebay a week or so ago. Anyway I digress, What's puzzling me is that on the Atac promo listed on John Manships Gino Washingtons name is spelt with an i, however on the stock it's spelt with an e?? Can anyone shed any light on this for me, as I hadn't noticed it on the listing . Anyway here's a scan of the copy I've got. GENO WASHINGTON - ILL BE AROUND - ATAC - GINO WASHINGTON - LIKE MY BABY - ATAC -

Collecting British...why Bother?
Hello Dave & Pete, My questions weren't meant to be taken as having a pop, so to speak (that's the problem with the written word). From what you wrote, I still think alot of it is connected to our youths. As Dave stated that he bought his 1st records in '65, I know that for the only way to own alot of American music (whether it was soul, blues or whatever) was to get it on new (at the time) British releases. All I'm trying to say is that I feel that the older UK releases seem to be held in greater esteem (or with even greater affection) than the newer releases. From what Pete said about stuff being only on catalogue for a few months, I get the impression that some at the time were probably available in greater numbers than say for instance, the current Kent Select series. Whereas the new releases nowadays will sit with record sellers (or remain for sale on ebay for evermore ), I'd imagine back in the day stuff that didn't sell (and let's be honest there were agreat deal more record buyers back then, than there are now) was just returned to the distributors to be disposed of. Most record shops then would probably push what was popular, which explains why theres so many Beatles and Cilla Black records at car boot sales nowadays and so few Walter Jackson uk demos . I wonder if currently out there is some 14 year old who has just bought a copy of Lily Fields Changes, who in say 30 years time will be proudly showing it off to other record collectors (if there are any then) with the same affection as lot of people have posted on here. As I wasn't buying records until 1979 (couldn't buy them in '65 as I wasn't born until '67 ), I don't have the affinity with UK releases that some others have, but I stand by what I say about connecting them to our youth, rightly or wrongly.
