Without doubt one of the best niters ever for me,quality quality music,nights like this saved me and my mates from dropping out of the scene,we did not want the same old wigan oldies that were played everywhere,this place played real deal soul tunes for us..I had some mates into the regular Northern stuff and then they came here,they changed overnight....Like Alan says,great to hear sounds like Odds and Ends getting a play,dj who could try different stuff and not be told by the promoter to keep the floor busy at all times ..We wanted to walk all the way back to Manchester city center afterwards and just keepm the night going....Yes Ruby Andrews live,not a long show as i remember .. regards steve

Yes Soul Up North is the work of my old mate Howard Earnshaw and me and others help get it out there to folk all over the uk and overseas...New issue out now and details are 0n soul source,if you have any problem picking up a copy then i can post one on to you and will have it on sale at the Wolverhampton all niter on 30th... Shades of Soul too is a good read for me,great value indeed... A certain person who puts out a glossy fanzine said to me that why pay £3 for a few photo copy pages stuck together, i said because its real,underground and the lifeblood of the rare soul scene.. Lets hope Shades/Soul Up North/Soulful kinda etc can go on for along time to come...

It got me and my crowd going when we were 16 but so did the black n white minstrels,i think i have grown out of both now ....Does this tune get a play at any venues still???not sure what i would do if i heard it now,smile and think of my youth or throw chairs at the stage ...

Going out to LA in 3 weeks,whats the score with records and hand luggage,i was gonna take about 200 with me to dj,can i keep them with me or do they go in the hold?????also need some info on places to pick up tunes in and around LA,Southern California.. cheers steve

Lets hope that Stardust records start to go up in price or i won't have enough cash to buy the Stanner stair lift .... Like most on here,i will sell a few bits but most will stay with me to the end..I hope to still be playing them out for another 15 years yet so lets not worry about all that just yet....Many folk are gonna get a shock when the bottom falls out of the market,it like the stock exchange and knowing prime time to sell,don't think they can leave it too much longer....

Matt Bolton runs a night called Move On Up in Leeds and its aimed at the younger market,it gets up to 300 people i think...Contact Matt and he will let you know what the kids want..I have played to a younger market quite a few times in the past and feel its best to mix it all up with Northern,club soul,funk/rare groove/dancefloor Jazz etc...

Bradford Queens hall 1981/82..On the last bus from Huddersfield with our Mod crowd,been drinking all night...I think there is a photo someplace of 13 of us all pissed up and asleep by 3am ....

My freind told me a short while ago about people thinking we were one big family and all looked after each other ....How wrong he was...There are many good people out there on the scene but also plenty of the other type also ..Over the last 20 odd years i had a great time just going to events as a punter with mates,i did not know the promoters/djs or main players really,just paid my cash and danced away....Since i have started to promote nights and be more in touch with other promoters/dj etc i have seen the underworld of lying/cheating/two faced back stabbing and lots lots more,promoters and djs drinking and chatting with each other and then calling each other cu"ts and trying to do each other over..You may think its the Sunday morning blues but i'm sad to say i been thinking this for a long long time...Like i said,plenty good folk out there and lets hope they win through or we all lose...Stick to the dancefloor and away from the dark corners Lets hope i'm more upbeat after some more sleep... Have a good bank holiday folks ...
