  1. Yeh, I think the Leeds boys played NOTW, and Dave played I'm Your Pimp. In all it was a great if somewhat surreal night. I was just a bit upset that you didn't arrange a soulnight in Tunisia last week!. Honestly this job is hell! Hope to see you soon. Paul
  2. At my last allnighter, Barcelona 3 weeks ago these two were played. Cheers Dave!.(A lot of toher good stuff was also played)
  3. I went to my first allnighter, Vava, in about the first week in Sept 73 and the track playing was Alice Clarke "You Hit Me". Still a favourite to this day. Paul
  4. Sad news indead, especially as he was the writer of the first "northern" record I fell in love with-"The Snake" RIP Paul https://www.guardian.co.uk/obituaries/story...1496464,00.html

Back in 1975 when all the media were jumping on the bandwagon, I believe it was a Sunday Times reporter hung around the scene for a few weeks taking in Wigan and Mecca etc. I seem to remember he did a reasonable unbiased write up. If I remember correctly I think he was "hosted" at the venues by Ian Cunliffe. I may be wrong though. Was it you Ian?. I remember meeting him at Mecca.
  6. I think that it's a Fame recording, and I believed it was leased to Chilean Capitol in about 1969 Paul
  7. Wasn't it the LA Power & Light Company I think on WB?. Nearly as good as the old soul classic played around the same time, mid 73, "Judy In Disguise" by Offenbach! Paul
  8. Might be splitting hairs a bit, but if the stories you hear are true it was more likely stolen as a demo after the rest were destroyed. Whatever the stories are, it still wasn't officially released until the UK issues in 79. I know that it goes aginst the general concensus in the "scene" nowadays but no matter how over hyped, over played and over here it is, in my opinion it is still a bloody good track. Paul
  9. The B side of the GWMB DJM single is pretty good from what I remember, if you like instrumentals. Paul
  10. I know the general attitude to it nowadays, but has anyone mentioned Frank "Bloody" Wilson yet. Paul
  11. In its day I thought it was just a nice sound now because of various other versions, a thread on here and a new cover by Darrel Ball and John Scroates. I have rediscovered "I'll Be Around" Detroit Spinners Paul
  12. A couple of years ago in the Sunday Star there was a CD called something like Lazy Sunday Soul. It had Frank Wilson, Sliced Tomatoes, Band Of Gold and a few others including the added extra tracks in a similar style that they thow on these discs. I bought the paper specially for it and it was crap. Paul

Hero is the wrong word actually but he was someone who was a good laugh to be around. I knew him from around 73 and last time I saw him was 84. I think character is a far better word. Paul

Only ever went to one Karaoke night about 10 years ago. The tracks were obviously very US based because while looking at the listings I noticed "Nobody But Me" Human Beinz and "More Today Than Yesterday" Spiral Staircase, both US hits. Fortunately I didn't get pissed enough to try, but was tempted with the Human Beinz track. Me and my mate did do "Blue Moon" with me attempting the bass bit. It sounded good to us. Paul

    Pete Lawson
  16. But infinately better than "Stronger Than Me" IMHO Paul
  17. I agree, it's not a particular favourite if mine, but a good dancer. And is it any worse than say, Joey Delorenzo? Paul
  18. I agree totally, but at my first allnighter at Va Vas just pre Wigan, Someone(probably Dickie S) was playing "Under My Thumb" by the Rolling Stones. Oh and "That's The Tune" by PJ Proby.(and I still have the Album with it on!). The problem was, you could cope with good danceable pop/"Blue eyed soul" being played amongst the majority of true uptempo soul. It was just that the plot was well and truly lost by about 76, 77.and to a certain extent from 74. Oh1 and I have always loved "The Snake" since I first heard it at a youth club in 1971. The thing is, my other favourite sound at the time was "Scratchy" Paul
  19. Just remebered "I Miss My Baby" by the Lebarron Strings all time classic, and what about "We Gotta Keep On Keepin On" by the Casino Brothers. Paul

I'm sure you're right Pete, I seem to remember a black Buddah release and a multi coloured "maxi single" coming out around the same time. Just another good soul chart record at the time though! Paul

As I don't actually go out to play much anymore, I'm stunned when I hear of tracks like this that I used to like in a new release sort of way and I bought at the time. Another was the Originals "Good Lovin' Just A Dime Away". Andy Peebles used to play them all to death on Piccadilly Soul Train. "Who'd 'ave thought thirty years today we'd be sitting around drinking Chateau de chasse and calling those new releases northern! Paul
  22. Reminds me of around 74/75 when Black Music Mag had a real downer on Northern and they just used to dismiss any reissues as crap. The descrition of Mr Floods Party, "Compared to What" was a dire instrumental played at Wigan. OK, the track may not be particularly soulful and was a Torch/Wheel sound, but I still think they should have listened to it before commenting on it. Paul
  23. I agree with you. The only thing soulful about it was that I think I last heard it in an OTIS Elevator! Paul
  24. On a similar subject, anyone know the true identity of Round Robin? singer of that gritty soulful oldie "Kick That Little Foot Sally Anne" Paul
  25. I'm sure that I heard that it was played possibly by Mr Barnfather at a soul night in about 75 and he covered it up as "Morning Of The Monkey"! Anyone else remember? Paul
