Recent Buys
My recent purchases veer towards R&B 2 yesterday at the local record fair Chyvonne Scott - I'm moving on (Alto) My kinda R&B. 4 or so people came up to the stand whilst playing to see what it was. Unfortunately not cheap though needed something to get me through the snow & cold on my (push)bike ride home Benny Latimore - I'll be good to you (Dade) Nice crossover. Others through the door Vernon Green & the Medallions - A lover's prayer (Dootone) After hearing on the recent New Breed (Kent) CD, cheers Ady Lena Calhoun - First love baby (Flip) Ditto & Billy Larkin - That's a lie (Vistone) Seventh Son take off. Lastly at my local record emporium, some UK bits Ben E King - The beginning of time (Atlantic) Not the usual type of sound I go for but found quite endearing Fats Domino - I done got over it (Mercury)

Marlena Shaw - Wade In The Water - Different Takes?
Jazzman records put it out b/w california soul (JM.032) a while back and may be the other version you mention. You can listen here https://www.jazzmanrecords.co.uk in the Jazzman records section. The info about the record does not make reference to it being an alternate version. Mike

Ricky Allen
Recently traded mine for a copy of Barbara McNair - He's a king on signature with a mate who kept badgering me for it. Getting worried he got another bargain out of me, as he also had Dolly Gilmore on Dove off me before it started going for hundreds. I think Ady Pearce used to have them as a local funk guy used to buy bits off him & sell them at hugely inflated prices. Come to think of it mine came from Ady also, off Ebay, a few years back for about £35. I think its quite a similar feel to Carlton Basco - Don't chain my soul on federal (LA label) that you might like also Mike
-
Jimmy Ricks - Romance In The Dark On Atlantic
Oh what a feeling on Festival is the biggie. I also like Daddy Rollin' Stone on Atco. Chained & Bound, labelled as Ricky Ricks on Sure Shot is also him, I believe (not 100% though). I think he was quite prolific & a few others are in the guides but couldn't say how good they are. Mike

Jaggerz - I'll Never Forget You (kama Sutra)
Assumed they are the same Jaggerz as on Gamble. Will try to get a soundclip up in the next few days. Waiting for a new CD recorder off a mate to enable me to do. Thanks for info Mike

Jaggerz - I'll Never Forget You (kama Sutra)
Catalogue No.KA 517 Is this version known? Vocal is pretty good, but has an odd twangy guitar at the beginning & a fuzz guitar between the verses. Not in the guides & presumabably the same group as on Gamble. Would think it was issued near the mid 70's. Any info? Cheers Mike

The Exquisites On Crow
A few interested in the 45 I am just gonna pass on any details of interest on this 45 to the guy to deal. Could you please send me email &/or telephone number if interested. It may be a week or so before I get to see him, so possibly a bit longer to hear back. Thanks Mike

Tommy Ridgley "i Want Some Money Baby" (johen)
Mine was from Dave Porter at Vivid Sounds (Tel. 01787 228238 or e-mail: david.porter5@btinternet.co.uk) about £20 I think a few years ago. He regularly does our local record fair & quite often has multiples of some titles. I am sure I saw other copies on his stall after I bought mine. Good luck Mike

The Exquisites On Crow
QUOTE Hi Tony , the story of the Nancy Butts 45 , was that a non northern soul friend of mine was married to the daughter of record producer Eugene Davis , and on one of his holidays to detroit in the mid eightys , he brought back a box of 70-80 copys of i want hold your hand , and 3 copys of joseph webster on crow , and a couple of other bits , these ended up in Carmel records , southend on sea , and i think Rod Dearlove brought what was left . they were not pressed for the uk market , and now seen quite thin on the ground sadly Eugene davis passed away earlier this year , hope this is of help . franky m UNQUOTE Further on from the 'Nancy Butts on flaming Arrow' thread in All about the soul, & frank's confirmation of how they appeared above, 2 copies of the Exquisites - Just couldn't make it (CROW) have come to light from the same source. I understand one is up for sale via a well known Essex dealer, so possibly gone already. The source still has the other & as a member of the family the funds are going to the family in Detroit (I think). I just happened to be in that little goldmine, Carmel Records today & the source confirmed the story, having recently returned from the unfortunate job of sorting the effects of a deceased relative. Anyway, I dont know if anybody is interested in the 45. Unfortunately, wayyyy out of my price range, in JM guide at £1500 (& listening to it on the 'rarest of the rare' page is the only way I am aware of it). Just thought I would put info up here should anybody be interested. Send me a PM & I will pass on the information. I presume it is a good copy, however, that can obviously be confirmed with any interest. BTW no more Joseph Webster or Nancy Butts were found, or likely to appear in any number in future. Thanks Mike

Anybody Got Any New Bargains Lately
Had this LP a while back, which has most of the Expo 45's & the Kack 45 on it. Good LP, was unsure if slightly different versions of some of the songs, but in the end thought just different mixes. Sold to a mate as had most of the tunes I wanted on 45. Asked on here if anybody knew anything about the LP with no response. I wonder if it was 70's/80's pressing? Mike

What Is Crossover Soul
Been asked many a time before. One of those questions you will never get a definitive answer for, and all personal opinion. My understanding came from a tape a guy did round mine about ten years ago, with the intention of being one of Manship's tapes. Do they still exist? Initially I wasn't too keen on many of the tunes, but they did then hit me after a few listens & I pretty much love all of the tape now, and over time have managed to get all but the most expensive ones. An example of the tracks :- Purple Mundi - Stop hurting me baby (trying to conact the guy to try & get this out of him, as I am sure he is not into music too much these days, family & stuff) William Howard - come to me Masters of Soul - Do you really love me Wales Wallace - We're not happy Milton Parker - Women like it harder Reggie Soul - My world of ecstasy Black & Blue - what I got Jimmie Ellis - Happy to be The Stimulation - Can you dig where i'm coming from Geraldine Hunt - Never, Never leave me Jackie wilson - Just call my name Godoy Colbert - I wanna thank you Freddie Scott - Girl, I love you plus many others. Basically my initial education, & described to me at the time as generally made between '68 to ' 72 when production was getting more sophisticated (presumably also as more tracks being available due to the ability to multi track in studios). I particularly liked the heaviness in a mellow sort of way of certain tracks like Godoy Colbert & Freddie Scott (fantastic track). Hope this helps, but probably not. Mike

Looking For
Thanks Mace If you remember would be great. Must admit I have only heard her version a couple of times, but remember it being pretty good, my king of thing anyway. Not suprised the price is higher than I thought, but not too much thankfully. Ta Mike

Looking For
Unsure if on RCA or smaller label. Was supposed to get a copy last year, but the deal was renegued on. Believe a £20ish record. Just popped into my head again after trying to educate my son with some Medway comp. albums, which had a cover of it on (didn't work) FYI, May not get a chance to check site & respond tomorrow, if you PM me Thanks Mike

Doris Smith - No Good Guy (limelight)
Thanks I have a friend who has one & is considering selling, but suggested he is looking for at least £400, so possibly about right. Out of my new year price range policy, me thinks. Got a feeling it may end up in Sales on here first if he decides to go ahead. Mike
