  1. "O" (Cirque de Soleil) is an awesome, all enveloping, mind boggling experience but you'll need to book before you go, it's probably the most in demand ticket in Vegas. Check who's on at House Of The Blues. While I was there James Brown did a one nighter, but, sods law, it was the night I went to see "O". The Sunday gosepl brunch there is good fun though. Southern style soul food and a great bunch of resident gospel singers that will sho nuff git yuh sanctified! Recommended.
  2. It was awesome - what a night! Voice like a train and smack in tune. Made a total fool of myself worshiping the old fella on stage - but who cares? So glad we made the trip from Kidderminster. Colin
  3. Thanks for the input - will go on Saturday. Taking my non-soul (but learning) girlfriend. If anyone recognises me from my 32 year old avitar pic (I was 15) then I'll definitely buy you a drink! Col
  4. I spotted Dean Parrish is doing a gig in Brighton Nov 5th. Just wondered what his live show is like? Any thoughts on the venue and DJ line up? Info from the net pasted below . Thanks! Colin Northen Soul Legend : Dean Parrish Nightlife King Alfred Ballroom, Hove Sat 05/11/05 Fee: £13 The Soul Survivors proudly presents : "Northern Soul Legend : Dean Parrish"; featuring Steve Csordas, The Woons, Steve Mc Mahon, Si Bridger, Clive Rayson & Paddy Shevlin.
  5. When I knew the guy back around '73, John Harvey, aka Kojak was no kind of soul fan at all. His motivation was money pure and simple. Can't understand why anyone would rate him. If you want a man who really was ahead of his time, I'd go for Worcester's John Farrell. Not sure how many times he actually played, but I saw him bomb at the New 67 club in Wolverhampton around '75 (ironically, a gig promoted by Kojak). Anyhow, J.F.'s taste was just way too sophisticated for the footsee crowd and his dancefloor had tumbleweed. It was some years before the mid tempo goodies he played that night gained any kind of following.
  6. Did someone sample The Champion recently? I'm certain I heard it on the Moyles show as a talkover bed.....
  7. Was Pep the first to play this record out? I can't recall anyone else having a copy around '73. Massive Midlands fave back then.
  8. It's a guy called Don Imus who was probably America's first "shock jock". He's been broadcasting in New York for more years than anyone can remember. You'll still hear him all over the States as his shows are syndicated by NBC. No doubt he's available via the net too. Although not as wild as Howard Stern, he is known for being pretty sexist, racist etc. That clip probably comes from a "best of" compliation.
  9. You can make a CD in your office - you can't easily cobble together a vinyl disc. I don't think CD's will ever have the same toucy feely appeal.
  10. Welcome! I've learnt so much from the people on here; a knowledgable and very generous crowd. Hope you have fun - and please don't be shy to post. Colin
  11. What a voice. If you haven't seen the clip yet, go there! She's still got it. Gave me chills. Colin
  12. Maybe I've been hasty, I dunno. I took it as a sick joke connected with Hurricane Katrina. Was I wrong?
  13. I'm sure there are other forums where sick jokes are welcomed.
  14. I'm also curious about this, although I suspect that another forum with more US input might shed the light we need. Were many of our northern favorites ever spun at Detroit houseparties, Chicago dance halls or early Philly discos? Be great to find someone who actually bought Johnny Sayles or Eddi Parker from a record shop as a new release, don't you think?
  15. Interesting post. Do you know if any airchecks exist fom these stations? It would be fascinating to hear some RnB radio output from the sixties.
  16. Fella, I don't know you but I do know tht music is a great healer. Sure, take a break from the scene, but why abandon a source of creativity and comfort? Someone much wiser than I said that "Life never gives you anything you can't cope with." There's also a saying that goes "what doesn't kill us makes us stronger." Keep on keepin on.... Best wishes Colin
  17. Just time to make one suggestion at the mo: Marvellettes - Sophisticated Soul. One gorgeous song after another.....
  18. Just like to thank everyone for their suggestions and a special mention to Soul On Ice for the thoughtful list. Cheers guys! Colin
  19. Groan!
  20. Matter of fact that's one of the few gebuine northern sounds that she really grooves on! Something to do with the drums, she says!
  21. Hi all Putting together a CD for my girlfriend who is, much to my amazement, really getting into soul music. Trouble is, it's very hard to predict what she likes. Generally the fast stompers do nothing for her and she's well versed in Motown. What really seems to float her boat are what I can only call the commercial end of deep soul (contradiction in terms I know). Think of Betty's "let me down easy" or Lorraine's "Stay with me baby". Just wondered if anyone had any further suggestions along these lines for a CD comp to draw her a little more in? She's heard all the Dave Godin comps and likes about 50% of them. Thanks in advance! Colin
  22. Bit of a hobby horse of mine this, but I'll keep on about it till someone agrees! In the first verse of this Torch classic, Roy Handy CLEARLY sings; "We stand in a line for fish and chips..." Click link below and judge for yourself - please! Roy Handy's Fish Bar
  23. Ain't nothin but a house party
  24. The song you want is called "Haven't got a clue" by Too Vague
  25. Adore "Too Hurt To Cry" - fabulous ballad. Good call.
