  1. oh snap! i had no idea!
  2. Flynny, Hey, I got that record you sent me (Dorothy and Hesitation). Sorry I forgot to notify you. Guess what? That is a perfect example for this list! Dorothy & Hesitations: "trying to work on a plan" (best 25 i ever spent!) ~ Leo
  3. just listened to this wales wallace. fantastic! i don't really know much about the BRC label. only have the lowrider oldie Nialations - "take you just as you come" on it. thanks for tip!
  4. ha ha - thanks for all of the replies. don't know a bunch of these tunes....but am searching them out now!
  5. this is silly, but do you ever have a record that you love so much that you can't believe it is so cheap? i was listening to "come on back to me" by Barbara Middleton and was thinking "if i just heard this for the first time i would think it was worth a million dollars!" and then i see a copy for sale for 30 dollars, and i almost feel angry (considering some of the crap records that go for four figures). it is almost insulting! anyway, perhaps i am insane.
  6. cool - thanks!
  7. just was going through my records and found this great double-sider Jackie Dorsey - i never had me a man / got to get next to a good man (ABC). both sides are great soul with a funky/gritty edge. does anyone know anything about the artist or what else she did? i really like her vibe!
  8. just wondering if anyone knows if they have secured a distribution deal. i live in California and sometimes UK films get good distro here (Full Monty, Trainspotting, Billy Elliott, etc) in the art house circuit. was wondering if that level of distribution could be expected for this film. i am assuming i will have to order the DVD at some point, but it would be nice to see in the theater...
  9. DJ-ed on friday night and played "pain." just a fantastic voice on her!
  10. i have never heard the "cocked hat" phrase before....but i love it! what does it refer to?
  11. i didn't listen to soul at all until i was 25-26. i started buying hardcore records at the age of 13 (hardcore is the american version of punk - much less "poppy" than sex pistols, buzzcocks, etc) - black flag, SSD, minor threat, etc. a bit later started also listening to rockabilly, british punk/oi, old country, R&B/R&R (chuck berry, bo diddley, etc), kraut rock, jazz, dub (everything but the kitchen sink). went to a friend's house in 1996 or so and heard "peaches 'n cream" by the ikettes. bought a double LP at the used record shop the next day called "Best of Chess Soul" and it's been all down hill ever since... haven't bought anything but soul 45s since 1997.
  12. just an FYI, in the thread title you have "Lt Cpl" (implying "lieutenant corporal"? which doesn't exist) - LCpl in the USMC is "lance corporal." it's the equivalent of a PFC ("private first class") in the Army...
  13. not always .... i have tons of records that have autographs...from the 14 yr old kid who originally bought it and wrote their name on it in huge black marker so they wouldn't lose it at a teen make-out party!
  14. i play re-issues/boots to audiences - i think it depends on the situation. let me explain: you guys (in england) use OVO rules to sort out the "cream of the crop" DJs... and that makes sense for a couple of reasons: - the audience is very knowledgable of the music - if you allow boots/reissues, then anyone can play anything (and almost anyone in the crowd could get up and DJ) - the audience pays to get in - and the DJ gets paid i don't always play OVO (although i do when i can) here in california for the opposite reasons: - the audience are casual (uninformed) soul fans (so, if i don't play my re-issue of "7 day lover" they will NEVER be exposed to that song) - there are no other DJs who own the orginal around here - or even spin soul music (so i am not upstaging/undermining a DJ who paid 5,000 for a huge tune) - they don't pay to get in and i don't get paid to spin (i run the nights myself, provide my own PA system, pay for flyers/ads etc - all out of my own pocket) - i don't have a CD player or computer (only turntables) - so i need the boot/reissue vinyl to play the music ...anyway that's my justification for getting boots of great songs that i just can't afford
  15. Howard Tate Bobby Taylor Betty Harris Big Maybelle
  16. right now, i am drinking a beer and watching a blaxploitation movie from 1973 called Detroit 9000. the opening scene features a black group performing a song "touch me jesus." i looked up on the internet that this song was recorded by Glass House in 1971 (it is a Holland-Dozier-Holland song). The group in the movie has a lead female vocalist that sounds exactly (at least to me) like the lead singer from Sisters Love. does anyone know off hand who this group might be? (it just doesn't sound the the Glass House version to me)
  17. i agree. not a stomper, but is a rich tune to move around to. also just sounds so BIG over a nice PA system.
  18. hey, i have two copies of this single, and both are white label promos. in fact, i don't think i've ever seen a stock copy. do they exist? i know northern folks play the A-side... ...but do people ever spin the FANTASTIC b-side as well? ("I wonder why")? just curious. it has some odd tempo changes, but is so RAD!
  19. just got this for 16 USD. the label is worn, but plays like a champ!
  20. Ljblanken posted a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
patricia denson & soul expressions - home from vietnam (the flip "I thought i heard you moan" is a regular spin for me! excellent)
  21. recently went through a divorce - that made me really sit down and take my finances more seriously. didn't buy a record at all for a few months. now trying to "ease" back into it, but have to go slow! just got a nice copy of "can't get enough of you" by joe anderson for $40 - and that was a big ticket item in my new era of fiscal austerity! just have to keep the collecting within the context of your overall life...
  22. can't wait to spin this tomorrow!
  23. ha ha! tautologically fantastic!
  24. is this the right tempo? whatever it is - i love it! Jill Harris - oh baby
  25. from the other side... i won a mint copy of benny spellman's fortune teller on ebay. instead, the seller sent me an empty elvis presley 45 picture sleeve. she had sent my record to an old lady on the other side of the country. i sent the pic sleeve to old lady, and the old lady sent me my record in an envelope! (no cardboard or anything) of course the record arrived broken in two pieces. i contacted the seller for a refund and she deactivated her ebay account! :-(
