  1. HI ALL All 4 of these UK DEMOS, eluded me for years, The rarest Jon Ford I got at least 20 years before I got the Archie Bell Demo? Sometimes records no matter how easy or how hard to locate, does not always go to plan in many cases the rarer a record is the more likely it will be offered for sale, in the days before the Internet, & RECORD COLLECTOR records like Jimmy Conwell were indeed hard to find, as were most rare UK northern dancers? DAVE
  2. HI PETE I wish it was as easy as you say it is, as my life on the net would be 100% better if I could grasp these basic stuff, I agree that once you reach a certain level of achievement you will challenge yourself to achieve more, and with experience, most challenges in life are achievable, however if you don't understand the basics it becomes a problem to solve, I am sure if some of the basics of this new tech was observed by myself , I would master it, maybe you need a clear mind at the start is the answer, is there any sights were you can observe how to set up and record audio? as I have the equipment, DAVE
  3. HI ALL THIS IS A CLASSIC FROM OUT OF MY, A US RECORD FROM ME TO-DAY NOT SURE! BUT I THINK IT WAS A BLACKPOOL MECCA SOUND, IT'S IN MY TIP-TOP 500 NORTHERN SOUL US LIST? LEE ROGERS "MY ONE AND ONLY!- D-TOWN 1062 VALUE O DUNNO HOW MANY £'S AS THE LABEL USED TO BE EASY TO FIND, A BIT LIKE RIC-TIC HOWEVER IT'S A GOOD UN! CHEERS DAVE
  4. HI ALL i WILL ADMIT IT. I WATCHED IT RIGHT THROUGH,!! WAS THIS THERE 1ST LIVE APERANCE ON TOTP, OR DID THE SUPERLOVE COME OUT 1sr? There is no need to give me any info, about this band, whuch is or was at the tume a real hate!!, I suppose in some warped world of a quantum existancwm a bit like the TATE & LYLE LOGO with the BEES nesting in the body of a dead lion, with the words out of the strong comes sweetness, or simular, My hate stems from the apperance on TOTP on the 7.30 pm slot after TOMORROWS WORLD,THE following SATURDAY NIGHT, AFTER driving up from north herts, because of all the little kiddies that Mike WALKER let in, he told me that the place was full and I could not come in following a talk with him that started with NORTHERN and ended wth a 4 letter word . I got in. i WONDER HOW MAN PEOPE ON THIS SITE OWN UP AND SAY WHY DID THEY GO, THAT WEEKEND? MY LAPTOP IS PLAING UP SO I WILL LEAVE IT WITH THAT QUESTION WERE YOU ONE OF THE GROUP OF KIDS WHO FELL A SLEEP AND CAUSED MANY REGULARS PROBLEMS? DAVE

HI PETE Well the truth is yes asI would proberbly Dead years ago! and if you dont understand my rambles, it would be like me saying you have never been to an all nigter, so pray please tell me what part gives you problems, is above 25% or less??
  6. HI to both of you, so on this example it really seams to be common sense, in recent times would you believe that I have seen the copy on the right sell for over £50? as to my eyes, it does not look as good as the one on the left and the sound although very good just don't sound as crisp to what we agree is the 1st cut, as you say they are both originals, other records give me the same sort of problem. Like Van Mccoy Sweet n easy, most copies that I have seen over the many years are Blue with SHARE in silver, and the Dave Godin pick by the AD LIBS nothing worse than being alone is on the nice colorful SHARE label, now I have Sweet n easy on both labels I don't think it makes any difference to the price but the colorful label is far less common, as yet I can't recall seeing the AD LIBS on the Blue & Silver? I suspect the Blue & Silver is the 1st and the colored one used once a record reaches more sales or one is East Coast & the other is West Coast, again this is just an example, but I really don't no the answer, and would a copy of the AD LIBS be worth more on the Blue & Silver label??? CHEERS DAVE K
  7. HI STEVE & CHEERS, you are dead right with the A side, I chose China Gate, for 2 reasons over the A side #1 it is a record that on the first time of hearing it, you get instantly taken to old CHINA TOWN, along with all the trimmings of an old black white Hollywood B rated movie coolie's Sampans junks & rickshaws (I had a mate called Rich Shaw) it's a classic hook for any one who likes good music, #2 the A side is more of a stomper as you say, and I was looking just a bit more deeper with the B side. How does it go "Saturday night after the movies" "we are going to the TWISTED WHEEL" Great club sounds on 1 record, just maybe worth a bit more than my estimate of £20 for the DEMO, DAVE SORRY NO SOUND CLIP

Hi All this is my reply to why my posts are so full of energy and crap, I care that you care, so here is a bit of explanation As high as 25% pleases me, for this reason, As a kid I was very waywood and resented authority, it was not until 10 years ago I found out I was dyslexic, as a kid to avoid some of the educational ways that were the norm in the 50's & 60's I would play up the teachers rotten, back then I would rather get the slipper or the cane in front of the class or at the morning assembly, when I started Secondary School this issue was the bane of my life, many times in many subjects, I approached subjects and issues in a latural way rather than the standard liner style, remember back then you were taught by going over &over things again & again, as I had a good memory and good at problem solving (good at math), at exam times I was never below 5th in the class, this p***ed of the teachers, as I would truant from school most of the week, but out shine the kids who attended all the time, As I got more out of control and being from a 1 parent family, I became very skillful at stealing and telling lies, also become unpredictable by the time I was 12 I got expelled for stabbing a teacher, the year before I shot a 17 year old in the temple with a harpoon, from that time on I was in kids homes in the north, this experience was to make me street wise, I was a constant run away and landed up at all the major town & Cities in England, it is scary to think how dangerous it all was, and also how the country has changed since then as no alerts were put out, and when the police picked me up! i was aware that when I got back to the home I would get a really hard beating. but that did not bother me, by the time I left school for me to spend a night out in SOHO was nothing, in 68 I was typical of many kids of that time and followed the violent types that attended my Football team West Ham United as such the youth culture that emerged from the ground soon spread and I was your typical Bovver Boy, but one of those who never ran away, adding to the fact that I first started using Amphetamine's at 15, you get what you see on these pages 40 years on, My poor English has baffled most! as I write more a less as I speak, as such many times I will write about whats in my head than what most people are used to, getting to the point as quick as you can, if any one cant follow my posts or I deviate away to much. PLEASE SAY as I prefer people who are open with there views rather than people who patronise me, as I have a high IQ, and have lots of life experience that could help many younger people, especially in the treatment of chemical dependency issues, to conclude I am a qualified counsellor counselling supervisor, and a teacher in adult education not to bad, but ill health has made me broke in the last 2 years this means I have to take 10 different types of meds a day including 10 Dex so that also can make my posts hedonistic. DAVE the BLADE,

HI HARRY I have all the UK LP & EPs that were issued, on the monthly sheets that were issued to Record Shops in the 60's I will have a gander through as it also give track listings. a good resource if you want to find something, I will see what I can Find for you, DAVE K
  10. Hi All This is one of the classic records on the UK Acton Label, and a rare example of a skeleton A DEMO, very hard to find under £100 these days Below is one of the most popular records that got a UKK release. sold so many copies it could have been a top 5 hit, however the sales of this record were never recognised as it sold poorly in London DAVE
  11. HI ALL This may sound stupid! it may well be now, but at the time I did not no the what was the real 1st issue from the 2nd issue, here is my mistake, and it makes me cringe as I wrote this, but to make my point simple, it may help others, now and in the future? My Example is:- my first copy of Bobbi Lynn earthquake UK Stateside issue, Which I got along with a few Tamla Motown 500 series from the CO-OP in Letchworth Hearts, all the singles were in a revolving rack I sorted out the ones I wanted and took a quick exit, as you do, (if you were a bad lad like me) this would be about March 71, In late 72 I had a decent collection of SOUL and had been reading BLUES & SOUL Mag for 2 years, to me it was a must read magazine which I read from cover to cover, especially learning about rare soul through Dave Godin and the comments in pen to paper, also the new releases, I cant remember the actual date now when the Bobbi Lynn was reissued on Bell, but I remember someone had a copy of it, trying to be clever, my copy on Stateside said Bell Recording on it (here's the Cringe) I did a straight swap for it, thinking it was the original, Today that sort of mistake would never happen (I HOPE) for a UK released record, but I am still not sure with some US records, my second example will show my point, as which of the 2 copies was the original? any tips on basic ways to tell if it's origanal 1st issue, would be good news, the one with silver writeing is the one that is in my collection the other one was out of one of my boxes DAVE
  12. Hi All I think it.s time for me to start putting a few forgotten oldies and obscure B sides that I have enjoyed for the past 35 years but maybe unknown to some of you, and I think they deserve a play, now and again, Years ago, when it was common to describe our music in the terms of SOUL.MOTOWN RARE SOUL, R&B. and also as STAX, ATLANTIC ^ CHESS It is the latter label that my record from my box, comes from. Chess records are still loved today as much as they were loved by the forefathers of the soul scene the MODS, many of the really rare stuff from the USA CHESS GROUP of LABELS never got a UK release, but some fine records did come out on PYE INTERNATIONAL & the UK CHESS LABEL, The record I have picked today, is a B side inst, by one of black African American musicians, a man whose talent plating the 88's is known world wide, but for the majority of the UK soul lovers, I think they would struggle to name 5 of his records? and I have picked a B side for you? The artists name is Ramsey Lewis, my pick is one of his best, Title:- CHINA GATE Label UK CHESS CRS8040 B, RELEASED IN 1967 Value£20 I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT AS MUCH AS I DO, DAVE https://youtu.be/leGc-d0jGR0

HI I don't disagree with that at all, wasn't the great Les Paul who made an art in multi tracking his guitar, in fact what he put together for his guitar was copied by many studios, it was not until the SMALL FACES got to work on cross fazing and HENDRIX WIRH FEEDBACK come along LES PAUL was the man, and another thing to consider is all records of the 40s 50s & early 60s were of a much higher quality than the machine used to play them on, still at the end of the day it i still a mystery, DAVE
  14. HI ALL WJ IS A GREAT SINGER, If you listen to thes very differant songs, but uniquely WJ LISTEN TO THE B SIDE OF "It's a uphill climb to the bottom! DAVE

HI PETE To be Honest with everybody, I have a passion for collecting all the early Bootlegs and have all the releases from SOUL SOUNDS 7 the others from that time, the same is true for Christ's Burton ISC labels Out Of The Past & OOTP (white). at that time 69 to 74 by buying them in the main allowed my love for the northern soul sound develop, I often quote about the early days of the scene and how I gained a lot of knowledge from Mick Smith, but that's only part of the story. Back in those early days the number of people who come from Letchworth into rare soul was 2, 3 if we include Mick and I was last as both Mick & Chris Gallard had been there from the start, This bootleg means absolutely F all to myself, it's not in the same mould as Sharron Soul Ben Aiken Debbie Dean Invitations Jerry Williams and all the rest, along with all the other muck the seller has got with his feedback of 19 if I was aware who he was I would report him. he ain't got nothing to do with our music and he ain't a Jeff King Simon S or Chris B, who lets not forget owned the TORCH, this release is a wast of plastic and like all the other bootlegs should be not allowed in any event, as that makes the promoter just as guilty, However I bet people on this site still by this s**t! LETS KEEP THE SOUL SCENE REAL, AND BUY THE PROPER STUFF DAVE

HI That a interesting point of view and quite plausible, However I would say you were 100% right but for one thing, the studio recording set up, It was not until October 1966 that the worlds #1 group got to record on 4 track tape. the recordings they made at Abby Road was amazing skill, from the engineers at the time. Queen recorded Bohemian Rhapsody on 16 track Rose Morris, I worked with the roadie who did the sound for the group family there singer Roger Chapman with him made the 1st on stage fold-back set up (a separate PA for the band to here what they were playing) as such I have a good knowledge about studio recording, and I am sure it is like I say, You may be right though, it is important to remember that the backing track in good studios is just that a track that has been laid down, most vocals were dubbed over the backing from another track, if they used a 3 track machine backing singers and extra BASS would be dubbed on, so my guess it's still a clip mark made 1 rev before giving that amazing sound, but again you have a good point, DAVE

Hi All if you list at 1.35 on at 1.39 there is a studio splice in tape, if you can imagine the tape mowing on 1 rev, as the tape goes over the splice it gives the effect of what you here at 1.45, , so by fixing whatever the problem was at 1.39 with a splice, and the engineer had aleady marked the tape as the problem, why would he bother checking what was already checked, in the 70s when I did a bit of work in the music trade, many of the old AMPEX 2 & 3 TRACK RECORDERS were being phased out, and that sort of machine would have been top of the range in most top recording studios, as such the tape had many cuts and edits in them, and the sound man would put a slip of paper to mark the cut, again this could of been left on the tape in the same way, the next operation was to cut the metal demo and master stamper, :g:listen to LARY WILLIAMS & JOHNNY WATSON "TO LATE" Okeh Why the quality control did not pick the mistake up is anybodys guess? but I am sure that this is the explanation that you seek DAVE
  18. HI ALL This is the sort of record that I remember finding in junk shops, and trying to impres Mick Smith at my discovery way back in the early 70s i remember it got the thumbs down then, mind you did it fit in with the Fuller Bros or the Carstairs? the pictured record is of the UK Bell record, what next Madi Gra "To busy thinking" or the B side of the Fantastics Classic "Something old Something new", I do not jest it's a good tune? so all you car booters out there tucked away on the UK Bell label inbetween the Gary Glitter & Bay City Rollers, there are some really non expensive soul recoards along with re issues Like Bobbi Lynn Earthquake, which is a cheap way of getting the underplayed B side. Dave
  19. HI ALL This is a lot rarer than the Paula and I still have my copy from a batch I got very cheap in the 80s and like most of the records i sold in the VIC (Wolves) they escalated up in price £5 back then, I suppose for such a good record it must be £60+ to-day if you can find one? NICE RECORD, THAT BELONGS IN EVERY SOUL BOX. DAVE
  20. Hi All to be honest if you did not go to the Highland Room it would change how he is as a DJ, We all are aware Ian has no people skills, but he was far more qualified than you give the man credit for, I bet he don't turn up! as I have never been asked to DJ it means at the moment Ian is more popular than me GGGGRRRR! Give the Man A Bone DAVE
  21. Hi All Pete when I saw this thread, my hart went into my mouth, I thought that you were talking about me!!!!! DAVE
  22. Hi All I am aware that you all no it and maybe grown to hate, but my copy is special, as aparently it does not exist so I read the other day, the record as a DEMO is very hard to find, my copy is just that but rarer much much more rarer, yet i bet someone say's the DEMO looks better, and I say don't be a FOOL! Oh! yer DAVE MY ISSUE PS DEMO COPY FOR SALE.
  23. HI ALL I can remember when GOD's DOG was a Pup, and collectors would talk about soul, especially Rare Soul with an emphasis on their specialist area of their collection, for example I often describe my collection as British, and then I will say however I have about 1000 original US soul original from the TORCH WIGAN Period, However like most of us when I discovered the scene I was happy with any thing to form a basis of a collection, at that time if you lived in the london area, and walked into a pub with a record box and a black driving glove on greeting people by shaking there hand, trust me how can I put it, "You were asking for a KICKing" for sure, however along with that, being on the scene meant dancing and talking rare records, all night long, so a collection could have anything in at the start In 1974 I went to the ISC LEEDS Festival, still voted as the best 1 off ALL-NIGHTERS, (That when I found the UK copy of Rocky Roberts) I can clearly remember which is a miracle in it's self, the back wall, whee the ISC had a stall selling all there records, there on the wall was all the white OOTP RECORDS FUNKY SISTERS RIGHTIOS BROS, INKY DINKY DINKY WANJ DANG DO BY THE END OF THE NIGHT THEY HAD SOLD OUT(pun intended) so it shows that for many many young people a record with there favorite track on it was great to own and play to your mates and impress them enough to think you were the Dogs, In recent years well since 1983 when it seems some small record companies that started in the late 70s had the means and the equipment to release CD's and found out that if you got the rights of a American label the big movers & shakers did not seem to be worried what you took from the vaults of a run down record label as such some of the UK top collectors had many of there rare finds booted? At that time I had started to collect again in a big way, but by 88/9 my appetite for chemicals and living in THATCHERS world with my mortgage at 17.5% I had no choice but sell of most of my collection (when I think back at the records I had then on US labels, and what they are now worth?) However I did sell them most of them to Mick Smith who has the knack of knowing that he will have the 1st look in, he gave me much more than I thought I would get and did not take the UK stuff as I suppose this was at a time when the words like MINT or EX+ started to be quoted and RECORD COLLECTOR MAG started to become a regular buy with the record sales lists at the back, My question that I want to know is about the modern REPRO scene that we see on eBay, as in the past apart from Hendrix Beatles Dylan & Northern Soul. I use to say about Bootlegs At least they don't do British, well not many, but in the last 5 years there has been a change as many rare UK Psyche & Mod R&B records have come out, but under the Banner of 1st edition REPRO, I myself have at least 40 of these that I paid £2.50 each for as would I leave them at that price, I think the Mark Lloyd is probably the best known on the soul scene, recently I come across a polydor record by Waygood Ellis I had to take a good look at it as it was a record that had little following out of our scene, and even within the current soul scene apart from half a dozen collectors know one had it or had heard it as far as I was concern, but here it was and apparently has become popular, now this is the 1st time I have become am I for or against records like this being put out, as I have not got a clue what a proper copy is valued at today as my copy was given to me 25 years ago, any way there are several discussion points here, I must state I am against bootlegs, but the ReTRO stuff has allowed me to play records that I would not of got and they are some really nice records in whats come out many more expensive than the rare soul. anyway here's my copy out of my collection and the REPRO All I can conclude is to listen to MARVIN & TAMMI classic "there's nothing like the real thing" DAVE
  24. HI ALL I Was going to explain everything to you ! but the lads have said it all with added extras, this records beat and tempo back in 73 had the dancers going faster than whirling derby shire? or 100 mph if you were block on caps????DAVE K
