As you are aware, I have collected records since 1966 an started DEE JAYING in late 1970, by 1972 I had a decent amount of Soul R&B FUNK & some 45s that we ould call Rare Soul, but it was not till I met Mick Smith I had any idea about the true value of my 45s, I had a clue that some uptempo soul was collectable, back in 1970 after meeting John Wilkinson from Notts, who was a wheel goer and all other venues, However it was through Mick & Clive that bought everything to-gether, I am all to well aware that things have moved on over the years and peoples tasts have changed, but it was through Mick I learnt how to value a record, and this does not always mean by price, Next time you meet Mick at a Record Fair poll out a copy of Follow my Heart and see how he reacts to this record, so value is about quality, Pete John what I want to no is this, over the last 15 years all I ever see on lists and on the WEB are records in VG + condition, in the early days just getting hold of a rare record bought me delite, So with all these smashing EX+ MINT- and the patter used to sell them, what are you doing with all the VG & Fair copys as I would buy them, the only person who I have obtained the Rare stuff from, but he would not sell himself but knows I am not botherd as long as it's origanal and plays is BUTCH, So if he gets them he places them, why cant other deallers do the same, coz I aint got no money to complete my UK soul collection, I promise that I will give a crap price for a crap record, and I will throw some free verbal in for nothing. It that awfull gut wrenching feeling that only the victims of this awful crime, I am strongly of the belief that this incident was not a chancer, but committed by 2 people as it must-have been noticeable who suddenly left the venue around-the time they were stolen, surely people who where there must no, Question should dealers and Dee Jays get insurance cover, or has the venue got some insurance cover, did you report it to the POLICE?? I am gutted for you, have you a list of your records and also a list of who attended on the night? As a collection filler it's worth is £50 if the label is ok, However Doctor Bird, & Bluebeat records can be skimmed up and sound really quite good, so always check your treasures before paying big money? a skimmed record is just that skimmed? The rare soul scene is the only one that openly acknowlages the subject of the importance that DRUG use played in the early days, As we all get closer to pension age? do you think that our euthoric recall of stimulant use, is good or a bad thing? is talk about green & clears, red & browns, brown & clears. black & whites. black bombers, blues & dex as exciteing as talking about green & white, red & white, yellow DEMOS, OR are they the same, also did this part of the scene cause any permanant harm, as I still use the product today, what is your current opinion of the subject, and are your opinions on the subject of stimulant use, and how has it changed, or have you substituted it with legal drugs like alcholl? HI ALL .....Another excellant question me thinks, and there are several answers to this question, Basically it is a promotional copy LP or 45 that are pressed up by a group band solo singer well anyone, to be given away at an event, or in some cases sold, a good examples are as follows, 1. they are normally done in a run of 99 copies, this is to dodge paying full tax, i think this was a musitions union demand to the goverment?? but it's a tax thing, 2. when I worked at the MARQUEE CLUB in the 70s it was common practice for a band to HIRE the place and invite all the most influentual music buisnes people there to try and get exposure and a record contract, as such 70s private promos are more common than 60s when EMI DISCS whee used instead, private tapes are collectable also, they normally have top radio DJs on them and as LPs the Stuart Henry, EMPROR ROSKO, & Kenny Everett, are very collectable, the MARQUEE made it money from promotional events, thats why it was so famous as every body played there at one time, if you can remember it was one of the smallest clubs in London, and many a roadie spent the afternoon standing around the Dilly giveing away tickets for that night, 2. Quite a few entertainers who work the summer season in the MED, get them done and sell them at the end of the night ?? I got a great one of LEEPY (Little Arrows)LEE) IN MAGALOON, He is well worth seeing he tells a god story DAVE

HI ALL .....PETE Thats not quite true as Mick Smith plays it now and again, my copy looks just like Micks with the grained paper label, paid £1 for it on Wolverhampton indoor market, years ago, always treated it as a boot till i saw micks copy? it should be nearer £1K DAVE

This is an old 70s trick, i am guilty of guilty of myself, and sold a few records with a substance I found at home in the cubord, it was like a very thin oil with a blackish dye in it you could polish up knackard records and they would look new, back then I had no scruples, now is so differant, we have discussed many differant ways to get the best out of rare records that have sufferd over the years, and there are loads of excellant cleaners & shiners out there to use when cleaning your laptop, for example whiteboard conditioner is a safe product and gives the plastic life again, as does WD 40, but to sell something for top dollers as something it clearly is not is fraud, and you have consumar protection rights, threaten the seller with a downloaded legal letter stateing your intentions, dont use a lawyer at this stage they cost to much DAVE

Ian ask yourself this in 100 years will people tead books or over 50 years ago the MINI was produced would you want a classic car/Vintage in 50 more years? whan I watch the Antiques Roadshow, they are already showing how toys from the 50s & 60s are collectable we also see how pop memorabillia has rissen in price almost evey year, and it still suprises me that is one area that the norther/rare soul scene has not realy tapped into as yet. but they will, 100 years is not long and although i will be bron bread, my records i hope will still be played, and finally i agree i think it was BEEKS who mentioned turntables and eqpt, that i no will exist, we are yet to find out the longgeverty of tape and CD DVD but there is cleare evidance they will not last the trip, however the vinyal will so the collectability will be there big time big time and i will give tou all a £10000 if I am wrong I promise DAVE

TO THE GIST OF THIS QUESTION, The way I see it, is Black music from the United States, has been recorded right from the very start of the invention of the gramaphone, and influanced the who world in popular music culture of the mid / late 20th centry. and most if not all black influance music and styles will be keept and documented, the vinly will get more valuable based on how long the plastic lasts for so it could well be that vinyl will be worth more than gold, but like jazz , the rare soul music will be enjoyed a copied, i mean just look at the way ANY WINHOUSE is be talked about , she and what she sung was so rare soul inspired that her death will bring many new pretenders to the top? d
