What Record Would You Use To Explain Or Exemplify Northern Soul
Hi All .....That reminds me there was a BOOTLEG of the WINGATE Love-in STRINGS - LOVE IN inst / JJ Barnes _ Sweet Sherry, early 73, that BOOTLEG was probably my favorite Northern SOUL record at the time, I always thought it was a shame that it was a boot instead of an Oriana issue, still my fav boot of al time DAVE

Darrell Banks On London & Stateside
Hi All ... Just to add my info on the London UK issue, I forget the name of the people who printed the labels for DECCA but I do recall reading about the London Issue way back in the 70s and not in a soul fanzine, but in a music trade magazine, where the question was asked if DECCA had pressed the copy as a stock issue, the reply was along the lines of the Demo came out right near the end of there license deal and EMI was going to distribute, Normally the record (Darrel Banks) would have come out as a LONDON issue, but as it was a minor hit in the US, EMI wanted to use it to launch it's new acquisition, And there was no objection from DECCA to argue over this record so the planned issue was stopped and I think there is about 14 weeks between the London Yellow Demo and the STATESIDE RELEASE, ii have never worked out the actual time, adding to this the LONDON STOCK Labels where printed at the same time as the yellow demo labels, now the only way a London stock copy can exist is if a worker got a label and did a 1 off? and although thee is no proof of a stock copy existing, it can not be ruled out, there is a similar situation with a T-REX single? I rate the RED & WHITE DEMO as rare what ever the answer is All the UK DEMOS are rare but the GREEN & WHITE DEMO is nice it is not in the same league as the RED & WHITE or the YELLOW and BLACK LONDON that does not exist would be worth a fortune, it would be good though if someone had some labels, as the T-REX missing number has labels?? I wish i could remember where I read this, but it is along them lines, DAVE

Interesting Read Abut Manc Mods 1960's
Hi All.......AH! HA! what a great article/s this is the sort of honest , and straight talking of recall, it almost drew me to romance, well recommended, Now I will not try and be clever and rash in my opinions about it all starting from LONDON, as we all are aware of the history of the MOD sub culture , and after the cockney reds thing and the SKINHEADS STARTED AT WEST HAM & MILLWALL, (true)? I will not venture that the MOD movement started in 5 mile radius of SHEPARD'S BUSH in 1962 and spread very quickly to the teenage wastelands of the home counties and the large city's of England but I will say it did not have any NORTHERN PIT BOYS IN THE RANKS, THINKING OF THE GREEBO BLOKE FROM KES, comes to mind?.. and leave it down to you! CHEERS FOR THIS PAULDAVE THE BLADE!

John Manship Auction
Hi All .....Chalky I did a posting yesterday to this, but it did not post?? the fact is I have to agree with your statements as fact, this sale must be the most disapionting one for a long time, every thing about the disc is right, or was right, and the price it raised, shows how the scene, (collectors) has changed, the BUNKY copy was one of the big mystries of the old NORTHERN SOUL scene, along with CHUBBY CHECKER'S "YOU JUST DON'T KNOW" I remember that it was stated by most that it did not exist on a US imprint, and it was recorded in London?? but we all no now it does exist on a Wesst coast label, and is a rare exampl of a rare UK record being more valuble on a US COPY, (THERE ARE NOT MANY) I suppose that the price differance of the UK copy against US copy was the guide we should have used in the case of the BUNKY copy? Hoever the BUNKY copy is in a differant league the Mr Checker, If it had been mine I for a start would not have sold it, but traded it against other rare stuff with a collector who was looking at the record as a rare example, not as an investment, as it has proberly depreciated already as it was stated"if JM cant get the top price who can, it is also worth considering that the £4K i valued it at, and I was being conservitive or so I thought, makes me wonder what are the expectations of records that have been discoverd from the 80s and onwards worth?? thos collectors who have paid £2K for a record have to be asking what is the Bench mark, it I was to cash in? in cant be the rule of thumb that it;s just 1 of 5 known, anymore, Have we returned to the old days when the top records ended up as white elephants?? Again I find myself saying aint I glad that I collect UK soul, as the vast majority is class and realy inexpensive against the rare US Origanals? To conclued when I got my copy from JA Soul Bowl, I was still under the inpresion that the shooting star label was it's rarest form, thats what happens when you buy a record for £1.75 and years later the £200 I gave Lil Dave Weldon for the DEMO copy I still have still makes the BUNKY COPY $2500 dearer. thats quite a mark up seeing that the only differance is the Name?? what Price is the Constalation DEMO woth today has it gone up on the back of the BUNKY find?.. and the Frank Wilson Bit Chalky I got so wrong! But there you go! Mr Dave Kilworth.

HI ALL JUST FOR THE RECORD...."BEING A ROCK STAR, IS NOT WHAT IT'S CRACKED UP TO BE" IF YOU CACH THE DRIFT? YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THIS "CRACK USERS NEED TREATMENNT" ??? MY MATHS SAY IF YOU HAD THE WHITE DEMO AND SPENT THE REST ON CRACK , THE BUNKY COPY WOULD END UP AS THE REAL DEAL/ Whatever the finishing price is, is not the point, it is still one of the worlds top rare soul records, Plus you have to add into the equation, that the Frank Wilson record is a MOTOWN record, as such being a MOTOWN record it has world market appeal, the same can be said about Reggae, Northern Soul Market is a much smaller market, and thats a fact, Nolan Chance Just Like The Wheather on BUNKY IS worth £4k and upwards and in a differant class than Frank Wilson Which has been released! Not in the states but on the famous UK black TAMLA MOTOWN LABEL, plus it was BOOTED, GOOD LUCK JOHN and dont take the Bait,:ph34r:Mister Kilworth

Tamla Motown Fan Club Us 45 1964
Hi and thanks for info, for some strane reason! I have never considerd myself as a collector of MOTOWN, but oin throuh the UK TAMLA MOTOWN Label there must be over 400 TMG records from the 5,6.&700s and 100+ reen & White DEMOS and 13 Red & White in various condion also I have a small number of the and while the collectors want the rare stuff I am very happy havein BABY LOVE & MY GUY as red & white DEMOS the later in my opinion, is one of the best recordins Berry Gordy JR released, it has every thing, plus a few EPs, So althouh the TMAS reetins from Hitsville is a US recordin (Nashvile stamped it was intended for the UK & Europe Fans only, so in a way I could always keep it till I find the riht collectore to have it (makes a ood Jinle for myself , with the hello Dave quotes???) I remember Sharron Daveis was writer on MOTOWN in Blues & Soul, so I will have the do the FLICK as EVD would say I will ask Mick or Ady as I am sure ady could write a ex book on MOTOWN,

Modern Jazz Lps Job Lot Sale
HI ALL..... As I am no expert on Jazz. what I like is what I Like approach, however the opportunity for you to have a nice pile of Jazz at a bargain is on offer, i have looked at some of the prices of some of them listed and although no £100 record, most are in the £20-30 price bracket, the music ranges span from the late 50S moder jazz to the mid 80s jazz funk, there are over 10 LPs in the JOB LOT and my price is such a bargain, I will give more info to any Jazz fan who PM me, I relay dint want to sell these to a dealer, lets say that again if you are a dealer? and you would like them the price is not negotiable, and I cant stand cherry pickers, especially when the offer has no rubbish. if you have never listened to jazz buy this pack with 3 mates and have a jazz weekend break, just a idea! Tamla Motown Fan Club Us 45 1964
HI ALL,,,Back in 1964, DAVE GODIN visited the states and mat up with BERRY GORDY JR on behalf of TMAS, this visit resulted in the Limited release of the GREETINGS FROM HITSVILE. Although I first bought Blues and Soul and Home of the Blues in the late 60s, I actually started to keep my copies from #56, and although I have all copies now (need #2) none of them goes into the history of this release beyond what I already no. Are there more in depth articles about TMAS and the DISC. Also how limited was it, as some say 300 and others say 1000? what is the value today, as I remember before EBAY, this was a HOLY GRAIL RECORD?? DAVE

Denise Lasalle - Tarpon Green Label Dj Copy
Hi Pete thats the first and only copy I have ever seen, I cant see how this, is possible as the Demo as we all no is the blue label. my copy is a green issue, and there was some talk on value , the green issue and the blue are about the same in value and rarity, if that is right this unknown demo must be the rarest copy of them all i don't no the current value of the blue but the green demo must be at least 25% more , as this sort of tk Mick it's his type of record, anyway, pray tell me how can you sell suh a record, and don't say money needs? a very nice find, it should get quite a lot methinks, but i am old school? PETE £200 is a good fair price I disagree about the low price for the green issue as for every 10 blue you see 1 green?? DAVE

James Barnett Pressing On Ebay
HI ALL AT THE END OF THE DAY WHAT HAVE I LEARNED FROM THE THREAD, LOADS AND LOADS OF STUFF ON VINYL RECORDS IN THE UK :thumbsup:The last question about DOCTOR BIRD RECORDS? I HAVE NOT READ ALL THE THREAD , HOWEVER, PAUL has got in before me I think but i have some evidence, and it has a benefit to most collectors, where R&B AND KING and any associated labels ,were pressed , i that clears up have some very rare R&B KING SLEEVES, AND WHEN I SAY RARE, THEY ARE BESPOKE, AND I WILL BE SURPRISED IF YOU HAVE GOT ANY IF YOU LIVE OUT OF LONDON, THESE THROW AWAY CARD SLEEVES ARE UNIQUE TO A PARTICULAR RELEASE, SO EACH RELEASE HAD IT'S OWN SLEEVE, AND IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THE SCRIBBLE, IT GIVES A HUGE INSIGHT TO THE LABEL AND HISTORY BEHIND A RECORD, AND FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO FIND NEW STUFF, I AM AWARE THE WRONG RECORDS ARE IN THE SLEEVES, BUT I AM SURE IT WILL BE FUN FOR SOMEONE TO HAVE A COUPLE SPARE,?? SO THERE IS A .;INK WITH ISLAND RECORDS AND TO A PHILIP'S STAMPER, I WILL SEE WHAT YOU HAVE FOUND, WELL DONE PAUL. DAVE

James Barnett Pressing On Ebay
HI ALL BEFORE I OR ANYONE STARTS THIS ONGOING SAGA REGARDING THE ISSUES OF SOUL SOUNDS RECORD LABEL IN A NEW THREAD, WHICH WOULD BE BETTER FOR EVERTONE ALL ROUND, BECAUSE THE DISCUSSION IS HID AWAY FROM EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT READ THE THREAD ON JAMES BARNETT? BEFORE I DO THAT, I HAVE SPENT THE LAST 2 DAYS, LOOKING AT AS MANY DIFFERENT ANDIE LABELS IN MY COLLECTION, PLUS I HAVE BEEN ON THE BELL TO SEVERAL COLLECTORS, THAT DO NOT USE THIS SITE BUT ARE KNOWN BY SOME OF YOU IN PARTICULAR TONY AS THEY ARE IN LONDON, I HAVE THE GREATEST RESPECT FOR EVERYBODY'S POINT OF VIEW ABOUT ALL ASPECTS AND KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE SOUL SOUNDS LABEL, WHAT HAS CONCERNED ME IS THAT ALTHOUGH I WAS WRONG (I THINK ) ABOUT THE INFO THAT i GAVE, AFTER GOING THROUGH MY RECORDS WHICH INCLUDED, EVERY SOUL SOUND RECORD (FULL LIST IS ON ONE OF JOHN MANSHIPS GUIDES, AND MAYBE ON OTHER GUIDES AS WELL!) I NEED TO NO WHERE YOUR INFORMATION COME FROM WITH REGRADES, THEY ARE PRESIDENT PRESSINGS , APART FROM YOUR SAY SO, WHAT ARE YOUR FACTS THAT MAKES YOU CERTAIN, MY RESEARCH INTO THIS AREA ABOUT RECORDS, AND TO BE TRUTHFUL IT'S AN AREA AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED APART FROM THE QUESTION RELATING TO ALL EARLY BOOTLEGS MEANS NOTHING AND ADDS NOTHING TO THE VALUE OF UK SOUL PRESSINGS, AND ONLY OF REAL INTEREST TO HARD CORE COLLECTORS AND ANORAK'S, FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS ARTICLE I WILL & DO SEE YOU ALL AS THE FORMER, AS THE SAYING GOES "IT'''S WHAT@S IN THE GROOVE THAT COUNTS (EXCEPT FOR PRESSINGS FROM A LATER TIME. MY FINDINGS ARE THESE:- 1. EVERY ONE OF THE COPIES #101 - 130 HAVE ALL COME FROM THE SAME PLANT, AS I HAVE PUT THE COLLECTION TOGETHER OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, AND A FEW YEARS ON FROM MY GUESSTIMATED PERIOD THAT Mr KING PRESSING ARRANGEMENTS AND LOOKING AT DISTRIBUTION, I HAVE COME UP WITH THIS AUTUMN 68 PRESSING STARTED WITH THE 1ST RUN AND THE WHOLE LIST SUBMITTED ALONG WITH THE TAPES, I RECKON IT HAD TO BE THIS WAY AS THE LABELS COME IN 8 WHITE, 7 GREEN 5 YELLOW, & 9 ORANGE, IN A RANDOM ORDER. SO IT SAFE TO SAY EVERY THING WAS IN PLACE BY THE END OF 68. 2. THE BIG QUESTION ON THE TAPE USED ESPECIALLY SS101 LEON HAYWOOD, THE TOP RECORD IN 69 AT THE WHEEL, I WOULD SAY THAT THE RECORD SOUND QUALITY WAS EXCEL ANT ON THE AVERAGE RECORD PLAYER BACK THEN AND IS NOT AS BAD AS B&S WROTE ABOUT, SO WHO'S COPY DID JFK USE?? WITH ALL THE OTHER RECORDS iI CAN ALMOST SEE THE CHARACTERS WHO HAD THEM BUT AT A GUESS THEY COME FROM MANCHESTER, BLACKPOOL, NOTTINGHAM & LEICESTER, AND MAY HAVE A CONNECTION WITH REDEFUSION OR AND SELECTOR GI SC, I HAVE ELIMINATED OTHER OUTLETS. 3. UNLESS YOU CAN SEE SOMETHING THAT I CANT, AND YOU ALL SEEM TO AGREE, THAT THEY COME FROM PRESIDENT, UNLESS YOU CAN PROVE IT, I RECKON YOU ARE WRONG, FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS, (a) There are many stampers and tell tale differences with all of the longer running labels, the President pressings from the late 68 period are similar but the are other records of the periob that are closer, President records from 1970 and on wards are closer and Jay Boy bot they are 69 and on wards, also my sources say no to the President as a outlet, unless you have proper knowledge about them being the Pressing Plant owners, again the info on the pressing plant is sketchy, but you may have all the info? (b) The next set of records that I trawled though was the Rita & Benny R&B Records & KING records, and it seems to me they used more than 1 stamper company as there are gaps in both labels at first glance like President they look right, however there are only a few titles that I have that are very close to the SOUL SOUNDS run, I will ust give a few examples, working of my records, they are:-R&B #JB160. 1964. and King #KG 1011, But the closer I look at them , even though they are sort of right, I thought they had used the Lyn tone pressing stampers but I think the are Islano Phillips pressed, where I don't know but quite a few shout out Phillips, other clues are again close but not close enough the RIO label all look at a quick glance very close, # R120 For example has no ridge ring and the right size and shape on how the matrix has been stamped in, as the SOUL SOUND LABEL, But again it shouts to me as a Island / Phillips pressed record, which leads me back to my original statement about a island connection and I looked at Island #WI-055 This is very close to the stamper but again it's a Island Phillip's on and on i have looked I ruled out GL INTERNATIONAL DIP RECORDS, AND THUS REMOVED LYN TONE which i was sure would be right, (ORLAKE) I JUST FEEL THAT THERE IS LESS OF A CONNECTION WITH THIS SET UP ALTHOUGH THEY PRESSED UP A LOT OF STUFF, AT THIS STAGE THE DON'T FIT IN WITH MY CONCLUSION DAVE'S CONCLUSION TO STEP 1 OF FINDING THE PRESSING PLANT IS:- As I was trying to explain the other day, to press a record up there are 4 main processes from making the recording tape, making a dub plate master and the make the master stamper, once you have a master, then as Paul states money talks and the back door is always open, and thats when my contacts said DECCA RECORDS DID MASTERS AND SO DID PYE, THIS PUTS THE IN THE FRAME, HOWEVER THE RECORDS THAT ARE EXACTLY THE SAME IN SO MANY WAYS IS THE DOCTOR BIRD LABEL RIGHT DOWN TO THE NO RIDGE AND THE RIDGE LIP ON THE OUT EDGE THE WEIGHT OF THE PLASTIC, SO THERE YOU HAVE HAD MY ANALYSIS AND FINDING, THAT I AM 85% SURE OF AT THIS STAGE, WHAT i DO NOT NO IS WHO PRESSED Doctor BIRD I HAD ASSUMED THEY WERE IN THE BLUE BEAT LINAGE BUT NOT SURE?? MAYBE PHILLIP'S CONNECTION? SO COME ON YOU GUYS WHO PRESSED UP DOCTOR BIRD AND GET YOUR FAVE SOUL SOUND FEEL IT AND COMPARE TO A DOCTOR BIRD OUT OF YOUR COLLECTION I FOUND DB-1089 & DS-5002 NICE ONES TO USE, BUT ANY ONES WILL DO, SO NO PUT DOWNS PLEASE AND SORRY ABOUT SPELLING GRAMMES AND CAPS,BUT WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM A GIPPO!? DAVE

Winston Jarrett - Poor Me Israelites
HI ALL Here I go sticking my neck out again, I think you will find that all Studio one output on the PAMA group of labels is slightly different to the recordings that were licensed legit to Island Records, thats how they got round the issue, as we know there are so many versions of virtually all records, this was the big problem that has made many company's releasing the Jamaican music, and since the days of CDs and the end of vinyl manufacturing, the pirates issue that caused all the damage back then, is bigger than ever, this has had a serious impact on the recording industry in Jamaica, as when was the last REGGAE record to become a hit in the UK?? big problem, R&B also released STUDIO 1 Records as you no on their KING & R&B labels. DAVE
