  1. On behalf of the intellectually inferior Paul, I accept your heartfelt apology.
  2. Hi All, I've had some enquiries about back issues: We have completely sold out of Issue #1 at the moment and we have no plans for another re print at this stage. . There are the odd Issue still about for sale I think at Jihn Manship's, Beatin' Rthym, Anglo American , Funky Feet Records, etc but we have none left via the website now. There are a few of Issues 2, 3 and 4 left, so people looking to complete the set, with these issues up to now, can order online at : https://www.theresthatbeat.com/backissues.html You can order Issue #5 or subscribe on the same link too. Thanks for looking.
  3. Correct. And something that is happening more and more on here I'm afraid. Remember - There's more that unites us as soulies than there is divides us.
  4. Hi All, Issue #5 is now at the printers. Subscribers will see their's in the mail on or around the 30th of this month. Some great stuff in this issue including a fantastic feature on Dynovoice Records by Leonardo Flores, the guy behind the film "Young Birds Fly", a look at WB subsidiary Loma Records and a great article by Colin Dilnot on songwriter, producer and arranger Johnny Brantley (Sam Williams, Towanda Barnes etc). There's a great video (with sound), that gives you a peek inside the issue here: You can order your copy or subscribe by clicking here: https://www.theresthatbeat.com/adrates.html Thanks for all the support, it's appreciated.
  5. Think you'll find that there's a bit more to the autographs than you realise Pete. Artists usually produce vintage promos of themselves and are happy to sign these once the fans have purchased them. For example: I have had posters made of the Harthon Trio. The guys will be more than happy to sign them and they will cost $10. This way they are not out of pocket for coming down to the event. Same happens at Prestatyn, There are posters of the event and the artists are happy to sign in their respected places. I don't think the artists charge for their actual autograph. I had all the artists sign sleeves etc at Prestatyn this year and never paid a penny for any of them. I'm pretty sure no one else did either although I'm sure Rob or one of the guys will corroborate that. I have original sleeves signed by many artists and can't remember ever having to pay for them, but if said artist has a CD or a picture for sale I simply buy that out of respect. I'm not alone either. Almost all my mates do the same. I suspect that DP will have promo shots and material out and will be signing them. Good luk to 'em I say. It 's all part of an artists income. Nothing wrong with it in my opoinion. I do agree that if a fan wanted an autograph and was told "sure-that'll be ten bucks" it would be a disgrace, but I've never heard of that happening.
  6. I'd presume you go to the US site if that 's where the package originated from and put the tracking # into the USPS system. Of course the only thing it will tell you is whether the package has arrived in UK or not. https://www.usps.com
  7. I once paid $1000 for John and The Weirdest boot leg! Came from Arizona. Managed to get my refund though so I don't know if this counts.
  8. Hope he's got a few 'bits and bobs' pulled for his upcoming trip out here? I'm sure he has.
  9. Exactly as I feel. Get to bed, you loonie!
  10. Fair One! I have all the sympathy in the world Mate. In fact, I'll crack another Carona for you.
  11. All time low?? Yer havin a laff folks! You must be? Unless of course your too busy concerning yourself with your "scene", rather than enjoying what it is actually supposed to be about. A few recent highlights for me: Listening to the Funk Brothers in Manchester via Dave Fergie's transatlantic cell phone call to me in the US. (A true friend) Dancing and singing with Billy Jackson, Colin Dilnot and Dave Fergie on a street corner in Philly. Welcoming mates and long time collectors to an annual shindig with the emphasis on dancin' chinstrokers and seeing everyone have a great time. Watching Sammy Cambell put the band through it's paces on stage in NJ. (One of the highlights of my 'soul' life). Sharing beer with Glenn Hunter out of a bag that we nicknamed the "Tardis". Meeting Johnny Warren for the first time. DJing at Barnoldswick where the egos are left at the door. Finding a Copy of The Capitols Karen 1549 45 on White Demo Striking up a real friendship with Johnny Stiles and Luther Randolph of Harthon fame having already done so with Weldon McDougal III. Reading Pete Smith's "daily escapades" on Soul source. Listening to a master craftsman at work when Phillip Mitchell put in a stunning performance at Prestatyn. In two weeks I host a bunch of collectors and long time friends from both sides of the Atlantic to a weekend of music, records, dancin' beer, great food, sunshine and more records. Like I said at the begining ....yer havin ' a laff people. You're missing the point! And while you're be moaning what others are doing your wasting the energy that should be expended on what YOU enjoy about soul and all it has to offer. Some folks would rather have a half empty glass than a half full one. That's fine.....crack on....but don't expect any sympathy from the rest of us...we're too busy having a good time!

I'd rate the demo as the harder to find, but only going on personal experience. I remember when this was an 8 quid record that was all over the place. The again so was Al Williams on LaBeat. Certainly not the case now and is on every wants lists I get.
  13. I listened to Roger Williams' last show yesterday on Solar and have to say .....It's been a while since I endured such blandness of music for such a long time. This is not a poke at Roger, I'm sure he's a well respected DJ etc, but the music itself left me cold. One track sounded just like another. Sorry , but if this is the stuff being punted as "modern" then count me out I'm afraid. It might be black....but a lot of it was like listening to a lounge singer in a hotel bar. Sort of there...but inconsequential. You did ask Andy and at least I've made an effort to listen to it eh? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  14. I'd rather have the Spanish Hit copy. The End copies are are just about done in now. None of themn were particularly good sounding from what I remember whereas the Spanish copies were all nice and minty sounding. Spanish opy for 350. Does sound a little high, but 250 should entice a few surely. Especially when you look at stuff like Skip Jackson etc listed at 200. (That's not to say they are seling at that mind!) I'd pay 250 for the Spanish copy. Anyone? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  15. One oif the best post I've EVER read on here! Absolute classic! Pete ...you should charge to read some of your posts Mate, crackin' stuff! Bet even Paul had a to chuckle at that one! Regards, Dave www.therethatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  16. I've never seen a Demo of this. The ones I've had have all been white labels but no mention of Promo. Also, there are copies with the labels reversed but I've never seen a 45 with the B Side on both sides. Can someone post a scan of the demo if they have one please? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

At the Hitsville Weekender in 3 weeks, there will be a constant stream of "DJs" leaping between dancefloor and Technics. It what we buy the bleedin' records for innit? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  18. Hey Vivid, Welcome to SS. Any chance of posting a clip of The Contessas? Regards, Dave www.theresthatebat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

There was never a boot of these LPs they were legally reissued by Motown in the 80s. I'm also pretty sure that there was also the one reissue too. Regards , Dave www.theresthatebat .com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

Hi Andy, It's the other way round Mate. Vinyl is more flexible than styrene. Most styrene records are stiff and their labels are made of paper and glued on. Hope this helps, Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  22. Yep, you're quite right Pete, and people will always agree with you...until they want to sell something! Then out trots the old "seen on so and so for..," "went for so and so on...", "50% less than 'book' price". Does anyone actually take any notice of all that crap! I suppose some do actually eh? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

Hey Tone, I don't get it? How come CDs are ok but MP3s aren't? Are you commenting from a physical product standpoint or from a 'collectors' standpoint? Serious question Mate as I collect neither mediums. I simply can't get excited about CDs (apart from some fantastic sleeve notes on some of them), and MP3s are just ether to me. Not to my knowledge. Only repressed the once. Real flimsy cardboard too. Easy to spot the original. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
